1501  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Request for an RPC capable fork of cgminer (125/155 BTC pledged so far) on: December 26, 2011, 07:40:52 AM
Well, I got half the 30 BTC bounty, thanks! 15 to go...
As soon as I am paid for today's mining, I'll send you my 5 Smiley

I've compiled your 2.0.9 and it hasn't crashed on me yet Cheesy  I haven't really done anything with the RPC yet though. Maybe tomorrow on the train I'll get a little something written.
1502  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Tor fallback nodes on: December 26, 2011, 07:37:26 AM
It's impossible to run a hidden service that accepts connections with recent versions. You'd need to change the code.
That's too bad.  A hidden service that doesn't accept connections isn't much of a service.

How do you know this? What changed in recent versions? What code needs to change?  Why isn't this mentioned on the wiki right under where the hidden services are listed?
1503  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Electrum - a new thin client on: December 26, 2011, 07:17:53 AM
I've been trying to setup a bitcoin node as a tor hidden service and have been trouble actually being able to connect.  Now I am thinking that it might be easier for me to run a tor hidden service for electrum.

I mention some of the problems here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=50547.0

Essentially, the satoshi client either announces it's IP on IRC or it closes its listening port.  This is a problem since a properly configured tor hidden service needs to hide its IP while still listening on localhost for someone directly connecting.  Is the electrum server capable of running as a secure hidden service?  I've yet to actually setup a server, but am really interested in the project and am wanting to setup a server soon.

Side note - I'm assuming electrum listens on 8333 since the satoshi client doesn't support any other ports, but this should probably be something that is easy to change with a simple flag when/if the "official" client becomes a little smarter.

Edit: I dunno how I hadn't realized that electrum is built on top of a patched bitcoind. That makes sense since reimplementing all of that code is a lot of added work. Of course, this also means that there are the same exact problems with running the bitcoin node as a hidden service.  It looks like electrum itself should work as a hidden service, but I still need to do some testing.

Edit 2: Wow getting pygtk to work on a mac is not as easy as I had hoped Sad
1504  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Tor fallback nodes on: December 26, 2011, 06:44:40 AM
mila I realized that if you want to only use the nodes behind tor hidden services, you should use "connect" instead of "addnode"

Clearing out the UPnP forwards got my connection count up.

Code:

$ bitcoind getinfo
{
    "version" : 50100,
    "balance" : 0.00000000,
    "blocks" : 159178,
    "connections" : 23,
    "proxy" : "",
    "generate" : false,
    "genproclimit" : -1,
    "difficulty" : 1155038.33396364,
    "hashespersec" : 0,
    "testnet" : false,
    "keypoololdest" : 1324762350,
    "keypoolsize" : 101,
    "paytxfee" : 0.00000000,
    "errors" : ""
}
$ namecoind getinfo
{
    "version" : 32464,
    "balance" : 0.00000000,
    "blocks" : 34897,
    "connections" : 26,
    "proxy" : "",
    "generate" : false,
    "genproclimit" : -1,
    "difficulty" : 409454.72461946,
    "hashespersec" : 0,
    "testnet" : false,
    "keypoololdest" : 1324762469,
    "paytxfee" : 0.00000000,
    "errors" : ""
}

Now my only question is if I should set the proxy back to using tor.  I'm guessing not since then the client automatically sets "nolisten" when it detects a proxy on 9050 and I still want to listen on localhost for the hidden service.  Has anyone else done this? Theres only a few other of hidden services listed and they are listed anonymously so I don't know who to ask.

p2hwc26zdsrqxiix.onion just in case you missed it although I can't get my client to connect to it Sad

If a government ever bans/blocks bitcoin use, allowing people access to the network via a tor hidden services (or i2p or something similar) is going to be important.  However, the current client doesn't appear to work with hidden services very well.

Some of the issues are brought up here https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/issues/441.  However, that is for being a node that doesn't contribute for the network.  I am trying to run a tor hidden service and it really doesn't seem possible to run one optimally.

How can I set my node to not advertise my IP on IRC without setting "nolisten"?  I have to listen on localhost without giving my IP in order to run the hidden service properly.

On a side note, I'm really surprised that the client can't use a port besides 8333.

EDIT: So I think that tor hidden services and bitcoin are not currently compatible.  Putting the onion hostnames from the wiki into connect did not work for me at all.  I know my own hidden service is up as I am also running a simple web server that is accessible from the same hostname.

When I put the IP of the system running my hidden service on the connect line, it works.  Obviously this defeats the purpose of the hidden service though.  Does bitcoin ignore connection attempts from localhost or something? Anyone have any ideas as to why hidden services aren't working?

1507  Other / Politics & Society / Re: I need a design of bitcoin flag for demonstrations in Russia on: December 25, 2011, 08:59:51 PM
I like this one too.  I think gold is my favorite color for the flag so far.

I still like the transparent flag idea.  I don't think I've seen that before. A gold B on a mesh/transparent background would look awesome, I'm not sure how well it would hold up outside.
1508  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Anyone want to fess up? on: December 25, 2011, 08:57:39 PM
I've seen "w00tw00t.at.blackhats.romanian.anti-sec:)" scan a couple of my systems.  One time the list of phpmyadmin 404s was hundreds of lines long since they tried every version 1.0 to 2.something.  Of course, my system didn't even have pma installed, but they were just scanning with some simple script.  I wouldn't be too concerned about it.
1509  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Self replicating 3d printer chain! on: December 25, 2011, 08:55:30 PM
I've been wanting a 3d printer since I heard about them years ago.  Then I saw one at a college and REALLY wanted one.

What are you wanting to make with yours?

How much do/will the parts that can't be printed cost?  Would someone be willing to buy these parts in bulk and then sell them for BTC?
1510  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Electrum - a new thin client on: December 25, 2011, 08:51:07 PM
Well put slush.  I'm glad you are working on the projects that I like.
1511  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Tor fallback nodes on: December 25, 2011, 08:43:45 PM
I suppose to start using bitcoin client over tor I need to set it up with -addnode values of tor nodes?
I'm pretty sure thats how to do it.

I am getting more than 8 connections with namecoin, but bitcoin is still limited to 8.  I just checked my router and it looks like it still had UPnP for my bitcoin port to another system.  I've cleared that out and hopefully it gets more than 8 now.

1513  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Tor fallback nodes on: December 25, 2011, 02:05:33 AM
I realize this is way late, but I finally got some tor hidden services up for bitcoin and namecoin

p2hwc26zdsrqxiix.onion

EDIT: Hmm. It seems that bitcoin is limiting itself to 8 connections.  My server running the hidden service is in my network's DMZ and I have "maxconnections=125" in my config.  Does having a proxy set force it to 8?  I'm still downloading the block chain.

Should I disable the proxy? That would reveal that I'm running a node which I thought kind of removed the point of being a tor hidden service though.

Code:
$ bitcoind getinfo
{
    "version" : 50100,
    "balance" : 0.00000000,
    "blocks" : 143079,
    "connections" : 8,
    "proxy" : "127.0.0.1:9050",
    "generate" : false,
    "genproclimit" : -1,
    "difficulty" : 1805700.83619367,
    "hashespersec" : 0,
    "testnet" : false,
    "keypoololdest" : 1324762350,
    "keypoolsize" : 101,
    "paytxfee" : 0.00000000,
    "errors" : ""
}

EDIT AGAIN: I turned the proxy off and still am only getting 8 connections Sad
1514  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: CGMINER CPU/GPU miner overclock monitor fanspeed in C linux/windows/osx 2.0.8 on: December 24, 2011, 01:46:20 AM
Interesting!  On all six I changed from dynamic, which was reporting I=3 or 4, mostly 4, to 7, which increased the hash rate by about 14% and power consumption by 7%.   I wonder how much we are losing in order to avoid "freaking out" an OS that is designed to work with spreadsheets, video games, and email.

The only system I use dynamic on is my workstation.  It has dual monitors hooked to one GPU set to dynamic.  The other 7 GPU all run at I=9.  Best of both worlds.  The GPU used by OS for desktop is always responsive and the other 7 are maxed out.  For the dedicated mining rigs I run nothing but I=9.
I run my dedicated miner at 8,7,8.  The system wasn't as stable with the second GPU on 8 and going to 9 on the other cards didn't affect the hash rate.
1515  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Nice looking new iPhone bitcoin client (bitpak) on: December 24, 2011, 01:42:49 AM
Full block chain mobile clients won't become popular, because downloading the block chain is pain in the ass. Just my two bitcents.

I agree

if you only have an iphone around and you have been waiting a long time for a native wallet then it's easy for me to note that you don't really know how a thin client works. I actually have both, iphone and android, around so i've been using the bitcoin app with android for quite some time, few months. I can say it's awesome fast downloading blocks, a month for example downloads in 5-10 seconds, easy to work with and doesn't depend on any central server either.
I only hope iphone will get equal or better user experience with this app or future ones because we need to get bitcoin mobile with any means.
But it's so much wasted disk space.  I have my phone full of music and movies and am not interested in an app that will constantly grow.

I got 2.0.9 installed from git.  The api commands are great.  I'll send the bounty soon.

2112, what would you propose as an alternate to JSON-RPC that can easily work with web and desktop clients?
1518  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Electrum - a new thin client on: December 23, 2011, 07:40:56 PM
I'm open to any constructive criticism, so please provide me any real advantages of using FIX or ZeroMQ instead of using JSON-RPC standard. I fully understand that you personally like such technologies. I considered them too, but JSON-RPC looks like better choice for me.

I <3 JSON, so no complaints from me.
