15141  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Are most people too simple minded to understand nuance? on: September 27, 2018, 01:27:34 PM
For example, climate change is obviously real, but if a big volcano erupted we could have 3 years worth of winter and then the climate change would return (temperature goes down quickly and comes back quickly)

Also in a warming planet although the net ice is down, there's going to be a lot more snowfall in many places that receive snow due to the higher moisture content in the atmosphere.

Warmer planet = more snow in certain areas

Also c02 helps plants grow but past a certain level the gains taper off completely and then secondary effects destroy the plants or make them bad for agriculture. (A simple-minded person might think that climate change is good, because plants are going to grow like crazy, yee-haw doo-dah day.

Or the good old chemicals are bad, or GMOs are bad for your health.

These arguments always make me laugh. "How can global warming be real when it's snowing outside?" is as stupid as saying "How can people be starving when I've just eaten lunch?"

The whole "chemical" v "natural" nonsense that you see pedaled a lot in advertising, particularly with organic foods, GMOs and MLM scams, is equally nonsense. Arsenic, cyanide and flesh eating bacteria are all natural. Water, oxygen and table salt are all chemicals.

It's not just due to a lack of education, but also a lack of interest in education. People are all too happy to be willfully ignorant.

I'm in the same situation like you but missing 4 merit.. We have to make a Self-Made Ranking Up Club I think Cheesy

According to Vod's BPIP, and obviously ignoring theymos and satoshi, there is currently 1 self-made legendary, 21 self-made heroes (of which 5 don't have the activity requirements), and 93 self-made senior members (of which 7 don't have the activity requirements), but at least a couple of the seniors are clear cases of merit abuse.
15143  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The difference between science and religion on: September 27, 2018, 12:46:28 PM
The Father was there, and the Holy Spirit.

Ahh nice. The "God did it" fallacy.

1) Present an argument
2) Your opponents prove your argument is obviously false
3) Simply state "You are wrong because God did it/God can do anything"

It is impossible to argue against, because we can break the laws of physics, chemistry, biology, maths, space, time, even logic, by simply stating "God did it". Every argument presented can be refuted by simply stating "God did it".

"How come all the evidence proves the Universe is >13 billion years old" - "Ahhh, God did it"
"How come all the evidence proves evolution" - "Ahhh, God made it that way"
"How come fossils exist" - "Ahhh, God put them there"

It truly is the last bastion of the stupid and ignorant.

It's time to celebrate Cheesy Big thanks to dbshck who pushed me over the 1000 Merit line.
It feels amazing to be the first user (I'm not really counting theymos and satoshi for this Tongue) to reach this! Now I can sit back and watch DdmrDdmr overtake me.

Congrats, and I like the Self-made Legendary text. Would it be bad form to use "Self-Made Hero" (once I get another 9 merits) despite not actually being a Hero for another 3-4 months? Grin
15145  Other / Meta / Re: Can my news thread be restored please? on: September 27, 2018, 11:08:25 AM
This is actually the only way to contact admins or mods it seems, with a meta thread, and I'm having a conversation here trying to figure this out. Responding to posts in this thread cannot be considered breaking the rules.

No, but posting three times in a row is breaking the rules, which you would know if you had read them.

Certainly there's a sub-forum on Bitcointalk where I can make a single thread and a single post per day without breaking the rules???

That would be Bitcoin Discussion. However, a thread that just serves as spammy advertising for your website, with no discussion or original posts, would likely be locked again as uninteresting and low-value.
15146  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S Ledger Live? on: September 27, 2018, 10:33:51 AM
-snip-

You are right - I meant privacy. A slip of the tongue, so to speak. I had to download and install Chrome just to use Ledger, and wiped it as soon as I was happy Ledger Live was running smoothly. Chrome is a privacy nightmare.
15147  Other / Meta / Re: So.... I am a NEWBIE again! on: September 27, 2018, 10:25:19 AM
Yes. Members who post 3.234x more than they read all got demoted. Blame theymos

Thank God my ratio is 3.233! Although I didn't read any of this thread before posting, so I think I may just have demoted myself. Bummer.
15148  Other / Meta / Re: Can my news thread be restored please? on: September 27, 2018, 10:10:27 AM
Banned for breaking the rules, doesn't read the rules, wants moderators to let him break more rules, and then breaks the same rule again in this thread. Amazing.

That entire thread is/was pointless. Not only were you breaking the rules by multiple posts in a row (since barely anyone else commented at all) and multiple bumps per day, but the thread served no purpose other than advertising your website. There was no discussion and no conversation. We don't need every article you publish posted here - if people are interested, they can just bookmark your website.

The press board is for notable Bitcoin press. The articles that you link to, such as "Investor Insight: Dogecoin (DOGE) and Reddcoin (RDD)" and "Steem Blockchain down a Week Before Hard Fork" are neither notable nor about Bitcoin. Spamming the press board with such nonsense will likely get you banned again.
15149  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Collection of 18.509 found and used Brainwallets on: September 27, 2018, 09:40:05 AM
It would be very interesting if someone could find papers with statistical research proving what is safer for a period of time greater than 10 years. A human brain or an HD. Something like this would definitely be very useful for many future applications. The simplest way to think about this is that it is much riskier to store a password in the brain than in a hard drive.

I doubt such papers exist.

The answer to the question depends on repetition, though. You can commit a 12 word phrase to memory relatively easily, probably in under an hour. You'll remember it for a day or two, no problem, but you'll have forgotten most of it in a week or two unless you practice it a few times every day. There's no way most people will remember something like that for >10 years unless you are repeating it at least a couple of times a week.

And then, as I mentioned, all you need is a mild blow to the head or a bad infection and you've forgotten it.
15150  Other / Meta / Re: Why would a moderator delete these old posts? on: September 26, 2018, 09:43:05 PM
So this is the worst you could find looking in my posts?  Grin  Grin like i said, i've nothing to hide, and don't really know what your point is.. that is basic math. If you would have read the full guide is all written clearly. But i guess you have no idea what a MM is and how statistics works.

There is no such thing as a betting system with guaranteed returns. You are either naive or lying.

If all "my opinion" posts deserve to be deleted then 50% of the forum would get wiped out.

Oh my god, can you imagine!? It would be glorious.
15151  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: An open letter to the community, from the developers of Breadwallet on: September 26, 2018, 08:49:32 PM
I prefer other people to be the guinea pigs first.

I can fully accept that, but we are now over a year down the line. It took 6 months to hit 30% SegWit transactions, and another 6 months to climb from 30% to 40%. If we just sit and wait it could be 5+ years before we reach anything near full adoption.
15152  Other / Serious discussion / Re: World laughing at the US on: September 26, 2018, 08:25:21 PM
This isn't really new - the majority of the world has been laughing at the US since he was elected.
15153  Other / Serious discussion / Re: misleading marketing from bitcoin[dot]com culprits on: September 26, 2018, 08:23:19 PM
Seriously! What's wrong with saying, "Dear Bitcoin Casher," or they are too ashamed to use their own coin name?

Yes. Their altcoin can't stand on its own merit, and so their entire business model since day one has been trying to trick newbies that don't know better in to buying "the real Bitcoin". I still chuckle whenever I see that ridiculous phrase.

Rory MacDonald was sponsored by Dash earlier in the year to the tune of $250,000, so it's safe to assume BCH have offered him at least as much. Calling him a "fan" is a bit of stretch, no more true than saying that Harry Kane is a "fan" of AIA Life Insurance because they sponsor the Tottenham football club shirt. But hey, as we've learned, BitcoinCashers love to bend the truth or outright lie if it helps their trash coin stay afloat.

Still, I'm sure Rory's day job of picking up repeated concussions and traumatic brain injuries has made him a sound financial investor.
15154  Other / Serious discussion / Re: What are your thoughts on life and extraterrestrials? on: September 26, 2018, 05:11:43 PM
Life is anything that actively sustains or furthers its own existence.

So,  just for fun let's discuss a bit. Would this definition constitute the Bitcoin blockchain as a form of life?

I've been think about it a bit more, and my definition is inadequate, as it would include things like fire as being alive. We would need to add an additional clause about maintaining homeostasis or performing metabolism.

Even without this clause, I don't think a blockchain can be classed as alive, as it needs external input to be sustained or furthered.
15155  Other / Meta / Re: Mod which part you missed that you had to delete my post? on: September 26, 2018, 03:10:58 PM
You are taking this way too personally. Just write it in drafts or post it to the local language board as suggested. It's not a big deal.

You've already moved it to the local language board, ergo the issue is now resolved. We can lock this topic and move on.
15156  Other / Meta / Re: Writing a welcome message on: September 26, 2018, 02:09:12 PM
Also, I don't think it is as big of a problem in terms in the number of people getting into trouble doing this.

It's become worse in the last few weeks since the change to the merit system. Shitposters suddenly find themselves in the need of a single merit, but they don't know anything except shitposting. Instead of spending 5 minutes to read a thread and formulate a coherent reply, they generally are just resorting to plagiarism +/- text spinning. We have even seen some legendary members selling a couple of paragraphs of plagiarism to one-line shitposting newbies, who will post them, and then receive a merit from the legendary.

Edit:

Well it shouldn't have to be but it really does need to be pointed out that this isn't acceptable

From a thread on Meta earlier today:

Yes, I know that I was banned for plagiarism, but I saw plagiarism from other users and felt that it was allowed on the forum.
15157  Other / Meta / Re: Why would a moderator delete these old posts? on: September 26, 2018, 01:50:10 PM
Someone will look into your post history if you post here.

Turns out he's made some pretty dubious claims about his betting system:

60% of 90 events are wins = 54 WINS & 36 LOSS =  18units of profit * stake = 18*30= 540$ ->  first month PROFIT

That is profit worth more than half bankroll! Imagine x1.5 your bank roll every month! With a 1k$ B.R you could reach 130K$ in one year and 17 MLN $ in 2 years.
This is simply math, the system only needs a 60% winning rate.

Considering that with this system you will bet in average 3 games per day, it’s IMPOSSIBLE to go bankrupt.
If you are the unluckiest person in the world and manage to loose all 21 games in a row,
the following week you will still have 33 bets available because you update your 3% stake according to the new bankroll.
Isn’t that great? No fear of loss.

Lastly, i bet with this system since years, i've shaped the rules based on experience. I can guarantee you that long term, if you strictly follow each rule, you will gain massive profits.

I've been using this system in the last 3 years with great success

Strange that he claims the system will make you $17 million in two years, and he's been using this system for 3 years. Using his calculations, 3 years is enough to make $2.18 BILLION. With so much guaranteed income with no fear of loss (his words), I find it strange that he's still wasting his time doing Italian translations for trash ICOs.
15158  Other / Meta / Re: Mod which part you missed that you had to delete my post? on: September 26, 2018, 01:16:26 PM
Guess what! I lost the whole ground because of this...
23. When deciding if a user has broken the rules, the staff have the right to follow their interpretation of the rules.

9. Discussions in the main boards must be in English. All other language discussions should be posted in the appropriate Local board.

There's not really much open to interpretation there.

You are taking this way too personally. Just write it in drafts or post it to the local language board as suggested. It's not a big deal.
15159  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: An open letter to the community, from the developers of Breadwallet on: September 26, 2018, 12:53:00 PM
I agree that a forced conversion will be disruptive, but I can see why they are doing it and props to them for taking the initiative on this.

I think the real issue here is education. I would wager that a significant proportion, probably even a majority, of Bitcoin users don't understand the difference between legacy and Segwit, and even less know the difference between Bech32 and P2SH. I was certainly guilty of this when I first got involved in crypto - it's easy just to buy from an exchange and send to a wallet without having really any idea about what you are doing.
15160  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Now more than 2000 crypto currencies on coinmarketcap on: September 26, 2018, 12:32:40 PM
And the number that have a working product and a real world use is in the single-digits.

What a joke the altcoin market is. 2000 coins/tokens, 100 billion dollars, and barely a competent team or working product between them. And more scam ICOs appearing every day, and more newbies losing their money by blinding sending it to the next project that promises impossible returns.

First position is bitcoin, but now bitcoin is in falling position and show red signal.

No it isn't. Bitcoin dominance is between 52-56% this month, which is the highest it has been all year.
