http://blogs.wsj.com/cio/2015/04/05/bny-mellon-explores-bitcoins-potential/

Bank of New York Mellon Corp.BK +0.85% is experimenting with bitcoin, the disruptive digital currency, which it views as a potential new way to conduct financial transactions. But the bank is still working through the challenges of using the open source technology, whose decentralized architecture differs from the traditional computer systems businesses run today.

“They are all very interested, but it comes down to having some kind of regulatory clarity as well as to the technology available—whether you have something they feel is trustworthy, whether you have a big enough capital base, whether you have good enough technology,” he said.

We are getting there. Regulatory clarity is a lot higher now, than it was 6 months ago. There is discussion on Bitlicences and more and more governments across the world are acknowledging bitcoins and taking a stand. Very soon, big investors will feel confident of taking the plunge.

Agent busted in Silk Road heist a bitcoin fanboy

At the same time that Carl Mark Force IV worked at the Drug Enforcement Administration investigating illicit online underworlds such as the Silk Road, he was also a budding bitcoin fanboy.

Force’s digital footprint reveals that he was deeply entrenched in the world of bitcoin, even when he wasn’t on duty.

In February 2014, for example, Force interviewed with the bitcoin news and analysis site CoinDesk about digital currency tax issues.

“I’m a proponent of bitcoin and hope it does succeed and take over the monetary system of the world,” he told former San Francisco Chronicle writer Carrie Kirby.

I am glad it is a Swiss bank which is exploring Blockchain innovation. The Swiss have for decades been known for the secrecy of customer data that they maintain.
Of course, before leaping into the possibilities of Blockchain, they should start accepting Bitcoin deposits. That doesn't seem to be happening.  Smiley

A Hyannis felon who tried to buy a gun and silencer from a secretive “Darknet Market” website that he paid for with Bitcoin online currency is facing firearms charges, authorities said.

Justin Moreira, 21, was arrested when he picked up a package he thought contained a .380 caliber pistol and a silencer at a post office box, according to a release from U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz’s Office. Authorities were waiting for him and the package was actually sent by an undercover federal agent.

How Bitcoin Will End World Poverty

http://www.forbes.com/sites/steveforbes/2015/04/02/how-bitcoin-will-end-world-poverty/

An interview with Brian Singer

And once you introduce blockchain cryptography, guess what they can do? Have a public ledger of ownership and transfer that cannot be denied because it’s absolutely transparent. It’s absolutely transparent. It is the means through which these individuals can get exactly what Hernando de Soto thinks they best need to bring themselves out of poverty.

It is so much more profound than that, but at its very basis, it has the ability to give these individuals the right of ownership to property. And that has more than anything else, the ability to bring them out of poverty. And I can’t wait. It’ll be adopted elsewhere. I mean, blockchain encryption is such a powerful tool. It’ll be used by banks, it’ll be used by credit card companies, it will become a standard. But what’s more interesting is what it can do to poverty around the world to eliminate poverty.

Why is the Bitcoin Bowl no more?

http://fortune.com/2015/04/02/bitcoin-bowl/

Neither side is talking about the abruptly ended sponsorship, but it likely has to do with the value of the game, and the value of bitcoin.

Say goodbye to the Bitcoin St. Petersburg Bowl.

Tired of bitcoin? Try marijuana, manure-backed coin

http://www.cnbc.com/id/102553811

Frustrated by bitcoin's booms and busts but not happy that Nixon took the U.S. off the gold standard? Incensed that central bankers continue to meddle with the macroeconomy?

Good news: There are more concepts in the works to create currency standards backed by physical commodities than ever before, thanks to the creative crypto-thinkers behind the digital currency revolution.

Anthem Vault plans to launch a gold-backed crypto-coin in May. The bet is that the coin—which is redeemable for 1 gram of gold at the market price—will be a big hit with investors who are tired of bitcoin's wild ways.

There are a multitude of alts to satisfy everybody. Smiley

Public trading could begin next week for bitcoin fund

http://www.cnbc.com/id/102549768

Investors soon could begin trading shares of the first investment vehicle tied to bitcoin.

It's been called "bitcoin's golden moment," and some see it as the start of the financial trend of the future. The Bitcoin Investment Trust (BIT) is just about ready for public trading.

The fund, whose share price would be about one-tenth of one bitcoin's selling price minus fees, has cleared all of its regulatory hurdles, and many shares have surpassed their year-long holding period, according to Barry Silbert, the founder of Digital Currency Group, which owns the fund's manager Grayscale Investments.

The Price of Bitcoin Is About to Get a Little Government Help

http://www.nasdaq.com/article/the-price-of-bitcoin-is-about-to-get-a-little-government-help-cm461318

The price of Bitcoin stands to get a boost this year from an unlikely source - state and local governments.

At least two states, New Hampshire and Utah, have bills under consideration that would make it possible for citizens to pay taxes and fees in Bitcoin. New York City has proposed similar legislation.

The reason? At least a few elected officials recognize the potential of Bitcoin to help government and citizens alike.

If you are old enough, think back to the early days of mobile phones, when video calls, directions to a destination and online shopping were all regarded as geek fantasies. There were even a few crazy voices proclaiming that phone photography could spell the end for some companies, possibly even giants like Eastman Kodak! That seemed ridiculous at the time and there were no shortage of people pointing that out, right up until Kodak declared bankruptcy in 2012.

Located at 6907 Almeda Rd., the Houston Bitcoin Embassy is an incubator/ coworking space dedicated to tech startups. There are also plans to install a bitcoin ATM in the facility by the end of April.

Warning! Kaspersky Alerts Users of Malware and 'Blockchain Abuse'

Kaspersky Labs warns users of a possible exploit in cryptocurrency blockchains that would allow malicious actors to distribute malware or even images depicting child abuse.

The warning is the result of research of INTERPOL Cyber threat experts, a group that includes a Kaspersky employee.

They warn that the extra space provided in each transaction, intended for notes, messages and as a space to allow additional functions to be built on top of the blockchain, could in fact be used to spread malicious code or worse.

Yuan is a damn more good currency than the USD ...
and ... China don't make war, it's astonishing.

China is perceived to be a bully in its neighborhood.
It has border disputes with all its neighbors, not to mention its position on Taiwan.
But the more fundamental problem is with Yuan's convertibility.

China’s yuan may join elite money club this year

In what would be a huge milestone in China’s emergence as a major world financial power, the International Monetary Fund looks likely to adopt the country’s currency into the basket that makes up its global forex benchmark.

Or so say strategists at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, writing in a note Wednesday that they believe the IMF will vote this October to include the yuan as one of the units that make up the Fund’s “Special Drawing Rights” (SDR), a sort of meta-currency used in IMF transactions.

This might not seem like a big deal, but Merrill Lynch assures that it is. By joining the elite club — there are only four currencies in the basket right now: the U.S. dollar, the euro, the British pound  and the Japanese yen — it would “legitimize its use as a reserve currency,” possibly reducing China’s cost of foreign borrowing and offering an “extra degree of freedom in financing future current-account deficits,” the strategists said.

Does bitcoin have potential for online dating sites?

http://fortune.com/2015/03/27/bitcoin-online-dating/

You could say that accepting bitcoin was just a marketing gimmick—that OkCupid, which is part of Match Inc., owned by Barry Diller’s IAC, was just looking to garner some goodwill and buzz among tech types. And it did get them that, even if the number of A-list subscribers that pay with bitcoin is likely small. The Financial Times, at the time, called OkCupid “the biggest brand name” to begin accepting the digital currency. OkCupid founder and CEO Sam Yagan, who is also CEO of Match Inc., reasoned at the time: “There’s no question that these digital currencies are going to be the future.”
