1541  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Cant mine with Intel graphics used for display? on: May 14, 2012, 04:35:34 AM
I have a Z68 board and 2 x 5850s. I'm using IntelHD for display. AMD driver is installed and windows7 recognized both cards.

I had a set-up like that. video from internal and mining on GPU. I did use a dummy plug. I was using XP and an older version of the SDK

1545  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 7900 series price drop soon? Nvidea 670 released on: May 11, 2012, 03:21:21 AM
ya. 7990 might not come out. It can not compete with the 690 but then also the 690 is expensive. Maybe at a nice price.
Then again, if they already put enough RD into it they probably would.

Or maybe it's part of the plan. Release the 7970 first, get 1 upped by nVidia, release 7990 second, 1 up nVidia...
1546  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: SATA III RAID Card Suggestions on: May 10, 2012, 03:55:03 AM

Looking for some suggestions.  Modest budget.

I'd like a H/W based RAID card and SATA III, but considering budget I'd consider SATA II and H/W RAID.

I had once considered PERC RAID controllers as these could be had for a reasonable amount of money.

Thank you.

I'm a huge fan of the Areca cards. I currently run the 1882ix-12 for RAID 0 with Cricial C300 SSDs. You will get plenty of performance witht he 1880ix line as well.

it's official...

And if you've seen the BFL waiting list, you know its gonna get much higher, very quickly.

And if you've seen the BFL WAITING list, you know it's gonna get much higher, very slooooowly*.

1550  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 5970 boots in safe mode, blue screens in regular on: May 09, 2012, 07:16:12 PM
I have a 5970 that is acting up.  I've taken it apart and examined it and it looks great.  It wasn't damaged or anything like that.  It just crashed and now will only work in safe mode.  I have other cards running fine in the same rig, but I've tried switching slots, reformatting, trying different drivers and a lot of other suggestions I found on google...  Nothing.  I don't know too much about troubleshooting cards, and I had a friend take a quick look at it, who suggested changing the clock speeds (the memory was clocked very low and it was undervolted) but I have been unable to do so because I can't seem to do that in safe mode and can't get it to stay booted long enough regularly to make the adjustment.

The card is currently attached to a Danger Den waterblock and I've tried reattaching the stock cooler as well (it never got wet and there are no visible signs of burning).  I'm open to suggestions to fix it, recommendations of someone on the forum who might be willing to get it working again, and offers from someone who wants to get a cheap watercooled 5970 that could potentially be fixed with the right knowledge.

Rig is running on windows 7 and has been stable for several months.  I've tested using both 32 and 64 bit versions.  It has plenty of power.

Thanks for reading.

Most likely one of the GPU cores is dead. It'll boot fine when the system is only using 2D, but the moment it tried to fire up the GPU, it will lock up.
1551  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I was thinking. on: May 08, 2012, 04:53:42 AM
I fear the biggest challenge to bitcoin will come this Dec when the block reward will be cut in half. (Question:will the difficulty drop by a lot so blocks are mined any faster?)If the block reward is cut in half and there is no substantial reduction in difficulty the mining community will will die off.

Don't worry there always will be :

-botnets

-system admin miners

-children in mother's basement

-mining "for the lulz" without caring about $$$ profit or losses due to electric costs

-illegal electricity stealing from neighbours / power company / broken meter

Difficulty ain't going down any time soon Angry

All the legit miners will be squeezed out I think and all the criminals left to play and mine.

-scammers

1553  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 5830 missing heatpipe. Is it safe? on: May 08, 2012, 03:33:28 AM
Basically got this un-used diamond 5830. It's in pristine condition, never removed from the anti static bag except for one substantial flaw. It's missing a heatpipe. Is it safe to plug in to a computer, and if so, is it safe to mine on?

Not missing a heatpipe necessarily, manufacturers often use the same HS on multiple cards. For example, I have a Powercolor 6950, 2 heatpipes, and I have some 6970's which look exactly the same, however the 6970's have 4 heatpipes. Comparing the two, you see there are 2 spots for the heatpipes to go, 6950 empty, 6970's full.

Can we please get this moved to FPGA section ?

Thank you !

He already posted here, that's the beauty of bitcoin discussions, once they're posted, they stay, even if the OP made a mistake, too bad, no chargebacks. The best we can offer is to answer his comments for 10 pages instead of 1.

OP: The BFL is the absolute best bang for you buck in the FPGA realm ATM. It's awesome. I'm running 1, and have more that were (supposed) to be delivered today, however the BFL timetable will add another 4 weeks at least.

The main reason you'll want to consider a BFL is power, heat, space, all minimal compared to GPU farms.

As far as ROI is concerned: $630 BFL Single: 830MH, current rate = ~16BT/month.
$475 7970 GPU Now @ 650MH = ~13BTC / mo x 3 months x $5 = $195

So by delivery, you're now at $280 cost @ 650MH/s vs. $630 cost @ 830MH/s, a $350 premium which will take ~4 months hashing the BFL to make it even towards the GPU (assuming diffculty and prices remain the same). Power savings isn't a whole lot to write home about in 4 months.

In my case, space, power and heat are not a factor, thus GPU is the clear choice for me, however, I'm nearing max capacity and plan on using my remaining AMPS to power FPGAs. Hence the BFL on order, but in the mean time, I've had my 7970's hashing away for 6 weeks waiting for the BFL to arrive.

GPU resale value is pretty good, FPGA resale value is better right now (I'd image you could sell the BFL single for a premium to those wanting it immediately) however beyond bitcoins, the value may be naught. But keep in mind, that would mean your confidence in bitcoin is low, if BTC stay firm, there will definitely be a resale value for quite a while. Also keep in mind that while 4 months of Power isn't huge, 24 or 36 months of Power really starts to add up.

So will this 2 a double or Quad fpga? Just wondering.

do you have problem reading simon? its on the fcking OP.

wow.

Go BFL.  They are catching up on shipments now.  On the 10th through the 12th of this month they shipped 3 weeks worth of orders from January, maybe more.

Dang, there' sjust something about this design that speaks to me. It's so simple, yet elegant. Bravo.

Would you post some more pics, without the heatsinks on and such?

What is the potential for an overclock if one were to use liquid cooling?
1559  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: The best FPGA on: May 03, 2012, 02:45:18 AM

So do all BFL products use proprietary software and hardware? As in, they will not work with 3rd party miner software?

I use CGMiner with mine, currently in BAMT

I am very happy they posted it in a new thread, looking forward to receiving my Mini-rig.
