LOL... looks like someone is a little insecure.

I suspect RodeoX might be, what with bragging about shooting his assault rifles. Good call!

I'm no right winger or government conspiracy nut. I'm a liberal who loves nature and the arts. But none of that's going to matter if I found myself face to face with an armed psyco. It will be too late for society to help him get the mental resources he needs. I'm just pragmatic about it.

You're just being pragmatic about it? Really? Didn't you say this (quoted below) earlier in the thread?

I went shooting this weekend. Put about 100rnds. through each of my assault rifles.

You sure do love yer guns, good ole boy style, don't you? Gonna be real pragmatic about, aren't you? A real Rambo, eh?

TheButterZone,

I thought you were going to go on about how much deadlier and more effective knives are as killing tools, as you explained to me earlier. No more to add regarding that? You know, something along the lines about how, maybe you should carry a knife instead when you're walking around fantasizing about getting mugged so you can show your stuff? If knives are so much more effective, then why would you want a gun?
1544  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 22 Kids Stabbed At School In China on: December 18, 2012, 03:45:39 AM
Don't worry everyone else in the civilised world agrees with you. It's just a certain type of American who believe that "the right to bear arms" or whatever trumps absolutely everything else.

The majority of Americans believe that "the right to bear arms" trumps laws written by criminals, to do nothing BUT protect criminals in their line of work. Gun control is criminal occupational safety.

There is one group of people who own guns and very much would like all guns made illegal.

Criminals.

Is that another one of those NRA memes? Like we haven't heard that one before. Say something fucking original, so we know you have an original thought. Don't you think that other nations haven't heard that line as well?
1545  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 22 Kids Stabbed At School In China on: December 17, 2012, 11:50:17 PM
I am neither glad nor upset... a gun is a tool, much like a camera, a shovel or a pen.  They can all be used to destroy and kill.  They can all be used to sustain and assist.  It all depends on how you use the tools at your disposal.

Interesting. So the military doesn't need guns because the soldiers could be armed with cameras and many already carry shovels?

Is that avatar picture you? I suppose you're one of those guys that other hikers/mountaineers laugh at out in the backcountry - the guy with the gun and bowie knife on his leg - is that what you're like?

You mean one of the ones that walk out instead of being airlifted after five days wandering in circles 500 yards from the trailhead?

Umm, no. I doubt you know much about the subject.
I know "Unprepared hiker dies after getting lost" is a pretty damn common way to bite it.

I think you're wading into territory you're unfamiliar with.
1547  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 22 Kids Stabbed At School In China on: December 17, 2012, 11:31:02 PM
I haven't said word one about gun control, I was telling you about locks.  Or are you too caught up in your rhetoric to realize that fact?

And you were telling me about locks to justify guns?

Quote
Yes, that's me in the avatar... and if you had even the slightest clue what you're talking about, you'd realize that's a camera bag on my back, I'm in a t-shirt and I'm standing at the top of one of the nice Australian rainforests.  In that camera bag, I have a Canon 5dMkII and a bunch of lenses, it weighs about 30 pounds.  There is no knife, nor a gun anywhere in the vicinity.

Dude, I wasn't speculating about what was on your back. I was speculating about you and how you might enter the wilderness, given your claims.

As for the camera, good for you. I've had (and carried on my person into high altitude mountain landscapes and slot canyons) a 4x5 field camera and tripod, 35mm film SLRs, DSLRs, a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, etc. My tripods have ranged from Gitzo, Bogen and Sachtler brands.

As for there being no gun anywhere in the vicinity, I'm glad for that.

Is that really the world you want to live in?

I want to live in a world where people don't collect and shoot assault rifles on their weekends and cry like babies if that right is threatened, thus reducing demand, thus reducing supply, thus reducing people from having them, thus reducing people who use them to shoot other people.

I want to live in a world where conspiracy believing weirdos who are anti-government, anti-tax, and anti-gun-control are actually intelligent enough to realize all the NRA manufactured memes are factually and logically incomplete, and would just shut the fuck up, so the rest of us don't have to witness these tragedies due to their wacko fetish desires.

Spoke like someone who's never actually been to a 3rd world country or a *really* bad neighborhood in the US.

Haha... fantasy crap like this falls apart the first 10 seconds you are confronted with something more than your comfortable living room and comfy little couch.

I used to routinely find myself in L.A.'s South Central and Watts after dark for work related issues. Probably around the time you were born, actually. Rodney King riots, to be precise.

Time I was born huh?  Lets see... about that time I was ass deep in muck and mud in the jungles of Panama trying not to die from poisonous animals, plants and disease while eating dried out but more often soggy MREs and hoping some asshole didn't frag me because he was too jumpy or some piece of shit guerrilla didn't stab me in the night.  Yes, your sad plight of having to walk around a bad neighborhood in the evening and being able to go home to a warm house and hot food was weighing on my thoughts, let me tell you.  I am so sorry you had to brave the jungles of Compton for 10 minutes every few days.

What was your point then? That life in the United States is like Panama jungles? I'm sorry, but it isn't. But life in the US can be like the inner city ghetto of large US cities. We were referring to gun control in the United States, were we not?

Is that avatar picture you? I suppose you're one of those guys that other hikers/mountaineers laugh at out in the backcountry - the guy with the gun and bowie knife on his leg - is that what you're like?

Plus, you can't achieve the same results with a knife.

You can achieve much worse results with a knife, as they are silent and don't draw immediate attention of people who can put an end to the killing.

Then you should have zero problems with gun control. Get a knife. Get rid of your gun and encourage everyone else to do so.

It's impossible to do. Selling guns is profitable, so they are going to be made, whatever happens. It's the same thing with drugs, selling them is profitable, so they are going to be made. You cannot stop people from doing that.

It's possible if you reduce production only to military/police force.
And when a criminal wants a gun, he just has to kill a cop.

Which is harder (and obviously would not be as frequent) as buying one in a store or in some back alley. Another stupid rare occurrence example masquerading as an argument from the resident forum propaganda consumer and spreader.
1554  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 22 Kids Stabbed At School In China on: December 17, 2012, 10:05:00 PM
Do you think people in less affluent neighborhoods have 5 or 6 door locks for decoration, or is it to keep people out, because door locks don't stop people?  Do you think those same people have bars on their window because the door locks work?  No, because the window is a weak point and dishonest people will not be deterred by 1/8" of glass.

Thank you for dismissing your case. If the techniques described above were not effective, then they wouldn't be employed. They work, because they deter.

Door locks are to keep honest people honest.  They do nothing to deter dishonest people.

Yes they do. Nice try, though.

Uh... no they don't.  Can you tell me how your puny little door lock will stop my foot?  The door frame to your house is made of wood... oh what's that?  You have a metal door frame and a reinforced slide on the door?  That doesn't stop a 40lb door ram (there's a reason police use it to bust down doors).  But seriously, why bother with a door when there's 1/8" of glass keeping people out of a structure?  Any handy rock will take care of that problem.

Subtly you say?  The lock picking link above is good... a credit card works fine unless you have a deadbolt on, then just resort to lock picking.

I'm going to make a guess here: You think that having more lights (streetlights, porch light, etc...) in your neighborhood is a good thing and makes your neighborhood safer, too, right?

Door locks do nothing but keep honest people honest.

You're like myrkul. He and I already had this conversation. Just because it's possible doesn't mean it's the norm. And regarding credit cards - did you learn that from TV shows? LOL, you're an idiot.

You suffer from the notion that because something is possible, it is the norm. As I said in the other post, you're a dumbfuck. And you suffer from the delusion that the others you're arguing with are as dumb as you.

If your best argument is "you're a dumbfuck," then it's quite clear that you are much less intelligent than I.

No, my arguments precede and/or follow my labeling of you. Now answer the question about the Brinks guards. Or were you hoping that would go by unnoticed?

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Note the modifier 'well regulated'. Also, note that a well regulated militia was necessary prior to the creation of the armed forces.

Note also that the armed forces, with the exception of the navy, were not intended to be a permanent thing. The founders spoke out regularly against a standing army. They knew the dangers.

And far, far too many people concentrate on the first three words, and ignore the last four.

There's no ignoring the last four here. We shall not infringe upon the right to have a well regulated militia in the absence of armed forces.

You want to show me where it mentions Armed forces? Cause I sure as shit don't see that anywhere in the amendment. Nor does it say "The right of the people to join a militia" It says "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms." You'll note it also doesn't say "the right of the people to keep and bear some, tightly restricted Arms." the last half of the amendment is clear, unqualified, and simple. We should have access to the same weaponry available to the military forces that we may need to defend against.

Hey dumbfuck,

It says well regulated militia, and it was written when no armed forces existed.
Really? Armies didn't exist? Then who the hell were they fighting? Pretty sure if they wanted a permanent army, they'd have put that in there, instead of relying on the militia, which they stated was "necessary to the security of a free State."

Give the idiot four stars. He gets it now! He actually gets that the 2nd amendment was because they didn't have armed forces. Congratulations.

In 2010, Automobile accidents claimed 32,885 lives. Is being able to travel at 70 miles per hour worth 32,000 lives per year?

Cars certainly enable things within our economy and our personal lives. Guns, not so much.

Guns enable personal defense, and the defense of the land as a whole. I would say security is much more important to trade than speed.

Try locking your door at night.

And how is that supposed to stop someone from stealing cargo? You'll note that Brinks guards, when transporting money, use both cars, and guns.

As well they should - they might be carrying your money or my money. But are you carrying a million dollars in cash and simultaneously advertising the fact? Please answer.
No, I am not. However, when I travel, I am carrying something infinitely more precious: my two daughters.
