1581  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: WHICH BITCOIN WALLET IS THE MOST GOOD AND CONVINENCY on: March 27, 2016, 11:23:42 PM
Hardware Wallets are safest in my opinion.
You can use Multibit HD wallet It doesn't need to download whole blockchain, it's good I use it personally.

edit: Electrum is good too, but I prefer Multibit HD

Ok, i already have blockchain but i want a wallet which can keep my mind at peace. Moreover, is Multibit HD wallet a hardware wallet cos i never heard of it before

Look up either cold wallets like paper wallets, or hardware wallets.  Those are the two types which I sleep good using.  If used right they just have great security.  And again if used right is key.

Blockchain is a hot wallet you should only keep your small spending money on it.  And make sure to use 2fa.
1582  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How earn Bitcoins fast and free?? on: March 27, 2016, 11:21:04 PM
Use reliable tipsters and bet with bitcoin!  Cool

Betting is honestly a bad idea, it's structured where you lose overtime.   The house always wins is a true expression, and one there for a reason.

Long term holding is the easiest.  If you are a great trader maybe more shortterm.  But again it's hard to get solid speculation on pricing.  But look at pricing we went up 10 dollars in a day in BTC value... that is fast.   So great traders might have made decent amount on this.   But also long term holders .... there is 10 that hopefully stay's (which is no guarantee).

I think fast and free... is just hard to do or we would all be rich.

Hi All,

My first post, so i will introduce myself... I'm Sara... Hi!

There is a lot of information around, I guess the hardest part is knowing where to start without jumping around and picking up bits of info, rather than something more structured!

I have bought an ant miner s3 used off eBay to get started with

Are there any getting started guides around you guys would recommend?

Thanks Smiley

Once you get it setup on your network it's pretty much sign up for a pool, and enter information on S3.  So the one people have most trouble with is networking I would say as entering info.... is pretty easy.

Do you know the IP of your miner?   Do you know the IP range your network uses?
1584  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: My Rig keeps Dying (((HELP ME))) on: March 27, 2016, 11:11:19 PM
With U3's it's called a "zombie".  You can search this term and will come back with a TON of issues its not you... it's the U3's.  Your choices are sell them, get a R1 with crazyguys firmware, or reset multiple time a day.

I would suggest getting a R1 if your dead set on keeping the U3's.  But unless you have it automated like crazyguy's firmware the zombies will make you hate mining.
1585  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Wanting to get into mining on: March 27, 2016, 11:07:20 PM
*edited to long of quote

http://www.coinwarz.com/calculators/bitcoin-mining-calculator/?h=18920&p=5689&pc=0.03&pf=0.01&d=165496835118.22600000&r=25.00000000&er=419.00000000&hc=3400

Now, the break-even point would be 170 days... This is not good, because in about 3 months, the ammount of bitcoins per block will halve, so your break-even point would be well after this break-even point. Also, 170 days is a long time when predicting the future of the bitcoin price.

This calculation means that mining would actually be a gamble... You can do it, and it can be profitable, but there is no guarantee whatsoever.

Maybe you can buy some really cheap second hand hardware, and try to break even before the halving... I didn't do the calculations tough.

This assumes the difficulty doesnt change in 170 days?   Like it jumped 180% the last 170 days.

It also assumed a old price on S7's.  Take new price of 582 - 100 dollar coupon.  Your talking a brand new S7 for 482 or so plus shipping... so a decent decrease in price.

So this does change the price of gear a good amount.  You are right about difficulty though we don't know if it will be a smooth ride of next gen comes out and just adds ton of has... time will tell.
1586  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Help Choosing... S5 or Spondoolies SP20? on: March 27, 2016, 11:03:50 PM
Not sure which one I should get.  I'm gonna throw one in my garage... the Antminer S5 or the SP20 from Spondoolies?  Help??

Look at prices of S7's right now with coupons before you buy either.  I think you will be surprised as getting a S7 most likely will make more sense currently.  They are just getting pretty darn cheap.

It's going to push S5 and SP20 prices down even more, this might not be instant though.  Might take a little time to do.

Op buy the s-7. If you need a free coupn let me know

Phil is a great guy OP I would take him up on the offer.  We are not seeing it yet but the new S7 price WILL push down all older gen prices on gear.   And it's not necessary the quickest process so right now your best off getting a S7.  They truly are at a unbeatable rate currently if buying new gear.

Watch in a month if bitmain keeps this pricing up how much old gen will go down in prices.   And bitmain might be selling inventory and it's temporary... no one really can give great speculation as they have become so darn good about keeping secrets with no leaks.
1587  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Mining and the Halving on: March 27, 2016, 11:00:18 PM
Indeed sir, well said.

The fact that cryptos were created, arguably, to circumvent the gigantic capitalistic nightmare that is big banking; certainly does not make them immune to those in positions of great power. I spent the last decade of my life working my fingers to the bone learning trade skills and making myself an indispensable employee to any number of companies; and now almost entirely as a result of my government pouring billions of dollars into the oil market, only guaranteeing the eventual crash, I find myself unemployed and struggling to provide for my family along with tens of thousands of others.

If cryptos hold any hope of breaking the vicious cycle of debt-creation and bubble economies, I'm all for it.

My money is on BTC being reasonably stable for the near future, can't help but have a bit of a biased attitude.

Cheers!

I don't know that I would say BTC was created for "arguably, to circumvent the gigantic capitalistic nightmare that is big banking".   Long term with that as a goal.... we fail.  We want mass adoption of crypto currency.   So we want "regular" people to hear bitcoin and thing good things not that it's trying to beat big banking... as it really is not.

It's ideas like that that give bitcoin a bad name sadly.  That is why many who have startups at this point use "blockchain" vs "bitcoin" is we again want mass adoption, not some small percent trying to beat big banking.

Is it true that cloud mining causes global warming?

Cloud mining and every electronic items causes global warning if they was made by destroying ecosystem to find the right raw material and use electricity which generated from non-friendly source (such as fuel or generate lots of heat).
But, cloud mining is just very small part of global warming.

Also, cloud mining is unprofitable or scam anyway Roll Eyes

So cloud mining is an unprofitable scam and it's destroying the planet, this is horrible.

If it is a scam most likely they do not have the gear and are not using electricity "destroying" anything.   In most they simulate mining... and in the end you end up paying more then you got back.  Yes it is a very sad thing amount of scams in cloud area.

If you really want to do it go with hashnest, they are legit by all accounts.  But personally I would buy a miner and put it at a hosting center if you cannot mine at home for some reason.   Then you have a miner that holds some value... which I view as a plus.
1589  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: What to do with old miners? on: March 27, 2016, 10:48:15 PM
Dunno if you can use it to mine a profitable altcoins especially if you have free electricity otherwise just sell it before it is too late with the increasing difficulty and the new equipments  Smiley

Even if late it's still better to sell vs sitting and collecting dust.  Lets say he gets 50 dollars for 4... thats roughly .45+ of BTC.   So almost a half a bitcoin now, even with waiting so long.

And if he ever needs he can buy back at cheaper down the road.  That has been part of my reasoning is they lose value sitting there.  So I can always buy later for cheaper in most cases.  So you come out ahead selling again.
1590  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Review] Avalon 6 Miner - Winter Mining - Notlist3d - Also FAQ and Help on: March 27, 2016, 10:43:09 PM
Yes, it gets unplugged and replugged once per day, I guess I'll have to look into a better way of swapping between S5 and A6 if this is what is going to result.

I thought it was a good psu and it still works just fine, it has been running my S5 for more than 24 hours since I posted those pictures.  The A6 (and S5) is going to Oregon Mines to be hosted pretty soon, once it gets too warm here, and it will get run on 2x 750 watt Dell platinum server psu's there, so I am not going to go out and buy a new psu just for a couple weeks, I was using the OCZ pair because that's what I had on hand.

The pci-e jack on the Avalon has a little bit of melted plastic inside and looks a little brown, I do not feel confident running it again until it has been checked out.  I am totally bummed that it is offline right now but would be even more bummed if it got totally destroyed, I can't afford to throw away the money for brand new hardware.

I guess I should contact Block C and see about sending it to them for an inspection, would that be the best thing to do?

Thanks for the replies, I feel better now than I did yesterday, I'll post a better picture of the pci-e jack on the A6 later today and solicit more opinion on it, but they way I am I'll probably send it to Block C anyway, just to be sure.

It does not hurt to contact them, I'm not sure what they will do with it being PSU's fault.   But never hurt's to ask.   But you might hurry up your hosting deal if you don't want to buy more PSU's.   Also might contact your future hosting center just thinking ahead as I'm not sure all would plug a psu into already damaged PCIe connector.

I would contact OCZ and get a RMA of PSU.   And just not use them again for mining.  I know my PSU that did this to a S3 I put in a pile after RMA and don't think I used it again, luckily it was on psu connector side for me on a modular.    And phil is right on unpugging and switching so often.
1591  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Diff thread Mar 18 to Mar 31? picks are closed.... prize = 0.1 btc on: March 27, 2016, 10:30:15 PM
The price is shooting up this morning. I had a sell order at $422 that had sat there for 10 days. The price just blasted through and is now trading around $425.
  A nice spike upwards.

It is a nice sign not the 450 I keep hoping for.   But it is something positive which is good.  I wonder how much of it is due to people buying BTC to buy S7's personally.  I might be giving them to much credit, but the new coupon price was a little surprising to me.
1592  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: What to do with old miners? on: March 27, 2016, 10:23:35 PM
Hey there, I currently have 4 S3 miners. I am going to purchase an S5 soon. What do most of you guys do with your old miners? Do you guys sell your old miners or just use them in your mining software?

Sell them is what I would do.   I sell all of my old gear and buy BTC, then buy new gear with it.   I have normal electricity... so my S3's sold long ago.   I try to sell  when I know I will make more off sell then at my electricity rate just mining them.  But it is speculation to a point.

Either way your better off selling and getting BTC over them setting around collecting dust.
1593  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Diff thread Mar 18 to Mar 31? picks are closed.... prize = 0.1 btc on: March 27, 2016, 04:43:43 AM
What could be interesting is what will happen if they start selling lots of S7's at new coupon price.  We might see a temporary negative from machines being unplugged and shipped.  How much... like anything hard to speculate.

But I do see them selling a decent amount at new coupon S7 price.  Could be an interesting next month.

ROI looks pretty good and with the $100 coupon and quick shipping even better.

no way that they will be giving out $100 coupons if profitability was good.

They are turning inventory and volume sales.  Bitmain is also clearing out the inventory that has already produced a profit for them. In turn, they are incentivising their product to move it out the door quicker.  Check out their business model:  1) Their own mining operation 2) Their own pool and 3) product for sale.  All three working in concert.

Looking from our perspective: ROI in 2.5 months and 1 month profitability plus the sale of the S7 in future months.

I don't necessarily disagree, but difficulty could go up 60% in one mo if 14-16nm machines will go on sale or THEY start mining with them.
What would be the price of such resale be in 2.5 mo, $200?
Money better spent just buying (or not buying) btc here, IMO.

You kinda hit one thing on the head this is killing resale value of S7's.  And the interesting thing is it likely will effect all other miner's prices to.... which becomes interesting.

So really good for someone buying a bunch of new S7's (assuming difficulty does not shot up insane).  But difficulty has become hard to predict.  They will sell though inventory though I predict at this price with coupons.  I did not see this coming personally.
1596  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Review] Avalon 6 Miner - Winter Mining - Notlist3d - Also FAQ and Help on: March 27, 2016, 04:18:58 AM
I turned my A6 off today during the day like I have been doing since I got it, I run my S5 during the day because it can vent outside.  When I went to unplug the power cables from the miner to plug into the S5 one of them was melted stuck.  I managed to wiggle it off.

What would cause this?  It's been running great since it arrived.  I'm using 2x850 watt OCZ gold psu's.  Is there a warranty, and is this covered?  Help!  Cry

On that it would be caused by the PSU most likely.   I have only had it happen once in my mining career and with with a S3.   But you can contact OCZ and they should do a RMA.

Kinda sucks as the bigger thing is what it was connected to.   Might hit up Block-C and see what they think as far as if it's safe to connect another PSU up to.  Not sure what they will say on it.

Did delete one post, commenting as I don't do it very often.  It was a post about a re-seller lowering price.    Just don't want to turn this thread into a continuous ad for a re-seller.  Instead of a second post please just edit first post with new price.

Is Holy bitcoin a reputable website to purchase this miner?   I'm just looking for the  best price and they seem to have it?

Yes. Scott is a decent reseller, also co-operating with some forum members here (sidehack, j4bberwock..)
http://holybitcoin.com/

But also check out this group buy: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1391814.120
Last run's price was 650 USD and I bought one.
It included:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1257327.msg14136125#msg14136125
You get an:

avalon6
a rasp pi with software
a power supply = a wall wart for the rasp pi
2 usb cables
1 little blu light usb to 4 pin wire adapter
1 4 pin wire cable

Next run is coming soon and possibly with a lower price.
I'd like to get one if this is a decent miner that should last a while?  I was a little worried about configuring the Raspberry pi.

I personally love the RPI ability of A6's.   RPI's tend to last a long time and work good.   Also if a problem you can fix it with backup of SD card very quickly.   And if there is a issue you can get a RPI quickly.  It is not custom gear.

Long story short don't worry about RPI, it's great that A6's use them.

Difficulty will always continue to rise as long as there is profit.  If we stop and lose lot's of hash, or stay's the same.... chances are BTC is not going to do so well.  It's always been a arms race and nothing shows it will stop.

Just look at last 9 month chart and you will see how it does increase .... and it will not stop as long as there is profit - https://bitcoinwisdom.com/bitcoin/difficulty
Yes all this have sense, but you can't expects that most of people have same beliefs as you and me.
Many are here only because they want to double money and on small sign of danger they will sell.
This is human nature, panic is something that was exploited so many times in history.

I don't think many are here to double right away.  Most bitcoin investors have  knowlege that it is a long term game.  At one point we could ROI every 3 month's on gear it was great.... now again much slower.

A fool and his money are soon parted... so ones expecting doubling of money soon or selling at slight down turn are not going to be BTC investors long.  And chances are they hold very few of the overall amount of BTC out there.
