162  Economy / Economics / Bitcoin exotic-bonds for payment processors like BitPay on: January 24, 2014, 07:11:01 PM
How do bitcoin processors process their bitcoins? Smiley
Do they just go to various exchanges and drop their bitcoins or what?

I was thinking, would it be possible for them to sell some kind of financial instrument that let people buy their bitcoins at some price lower than the current/last price before they actually have those bitcoins? I mean something like a bitcoin "bond"..

It could work like this: the processor expects to reach some specific amount in the next x time period, they checkout the order book in some exchange and they know that if they sell those bitcoins they would obtain (obviously) an amount much lower than the "last price", so instead of market-selling, they create a public offer for bonds so people could buy Bitcoins at some price lower than the current market price (or best ask) of some specific exchange BUT higher than the price they would obtain if they market sell.

Seems it could result in a win/win situation since people how buy those instruments are going to get a better price for the bitcoins, and the processor would obtain more fiat, AND also the market would be more stable Smiley

But I really don't know much about economics, so please tell me what do you think.

cheers

"Just implement a better WoT" is easy to say, hard to do. You first.

Convergence is not a bad idea, but it is specific to checking ownership of DNS. CA's do more than just domain names.

I am not sure if you were quoting me in any form... I never said it would be easy, what I did say is that no part of Bitcoin's protocol (except well, the bootstrapping process) should be based on centralized protocols/infrastructures. Also, in my opinion OpenPGP WoT is actually pretty good (especially with SKS) and there already is at least one project implementing cert validation through it (ie Monkeysphere).

And maybe my memory is failing really bad but I was talking about Moxie's Convergence, that is nothing to do with DNS.

PLEASE STOP USING X.509

Implementing BIP 70 means centralizing part of Bitcoin's infrastructure by using an archaic protocol/specification full of patches (or "extensions") to try to make it look better... just don't do it, it would be an epic failure for bitcoin

In my opinion there are a lot of much more important things to improve before something like BIP 70, but if you really want it then at least do something like Convergence, or implement a distributed WoT with a more transparent/easier key signing.

an usenet newsgroup would be better, someone should create comp.bitcoin or alt.bitcoin  Grin

Not many people here were born in the 70s unfortunately

I believe most people here use e-mail, and many others use irc...

When people announce "X accepts bitcoin! Pmg!" does this usually just mean that they have started using bitpay? Because if that's all that happens, we are effectively just making the world's largest middle man, not too different from say....PAYPAL.

My question being: Do any of these merchants actually KEEP the fucking btc?

as a user of bitcoin, i really dont give a shit if they hold a % of the coins or not.

the point is that i can spend my coins there

Well, you basically may spend your coins almost anywhere if you ask on #bitcoin-otc
