I think myetherwallet is pretty good and offers a couple of options & features ( especially in term of security and safety use ) that tend to keep me using their wallet & not to think to move to another wallets ( though I did not experience MyCrypro  so I can't criticise it  ) .

Naturally they would start going up progressively provided that some circumstances are fulfilled :
1) When giant whales stop what they are just doing
2) When BTC goes up : because most of coins are dependent on BTC
3) when traders stop panic selling because it contributes considerably to such drop 
When this factors network moves towards the improvement of altcoins technology , then prices surely go upper

Really , it's funny name , but I think the purpose is deeper than what's shown & the choice has not been made aleatory.

I agree with you when you say alts prices are closely tied to BTC's one but in relative term ,ie; a given coin can independently ( from bitcoin ) move & shows very different behaviour because the two factors that determine its price are : supply & demand .Not definitely , all thing is relatively commanded

They can't kill cryptos " in the concrete meaning of kill" . In fact they can take some measurements & legislations that may sensibly affect cryptocurrencies prices .
Banks also can do this as well , such as the British Lloyds Bank Plc and CityGroup bank & HP Morgan Chase bank which have imposed restrictions on using'em to buy cryptos ; this has contributed to lowering cryptos prices
