161  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Never recovered bitcoins? Less than 21million? on: September 28, 2014, 03:47:49 PM
Hi guys,

As you may already be aware that there are people who simply lose bitcoins, and there is quite a lof of them!

For example: This guy lost his hard drive with 100k btc on it, another guy lost paper wallet with 30k btc on it and so on...

Now the question that i'm asking myself? Do they stay stuck in blockchain? Because if yes, than i see only about 8million bitcoins in circulation by the time they are mined..

Someone has a thread that tries to track the known lost bitcoins: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=7253.0

I know their are other ones also I have seen overtime
162  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Blockchain.info asking for private keys- is my system compromised? on: September 26, 2014, 01:15:25 AM
I have most all of my coins stored in paper wallets created with Blockchain.info

I've used Blockchain.info a ton to send/receive with my hot wallet- today after I pressed "send" to send a small amount of btc from blockchain.info using my laptop I got these browser popups that asked for the private keys to my paper wallets- I initially thought that maybe I had tried to send more btc than was in my hot wallet but that was not the case-

I use 2FA with authenticator with blockchain btw

Has anyone ever seen this? Is it normal behavior for blockchain.info or is my system/browser compromised?

Thanks!

Don't paste your private key anywhere. This sounds really Phishy, I don't have any experience using Blockchain.info other than as a visual block explorer, so it might be normal.

Honestly I would advise you to never paste your private key into a dialog. I would import the private keys into a new bitcoin-qt wallet or armory wallet using https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Importprivkey , ensure that the key pairs are generated on a new operating system offline, then format over this OS after making redundant offline backups. Nuke your current machine and get new ip.

If you want to use Blockchain.info try out their mobile app. avoid using it on a traditional computer, create a few transactions on the offline machine then broadcast an amount of Bitcoin your comfortable losing into your new mobile wallet. (I would check out the breadwallet if you have iOS)

More likely we will end up like a technology like Bit-torrent, albeit vastly superior to centralized file distribution it is not wirely used because the technology was entirely discredited by the recording industry.

Is anyone trying to hack my wallet?

No one is trying to hack you, just like everyone has said already: It is advertising, search for Laxotrade they also have been spamming people with Dust for free advertisements. "Recently"
166  Economy / Speculation / Re: Where do YOU see bitcoin in 1 month? 1 year? 5 years? on: September 24, 2014, 09:01:50 PM
As the title states, share your beliefs!

Personally:

1 month - Same as now (price wise, no major adoption taking place)

1 year - Price is 'steady' at 2k, adoption by a few chains online and fewer locally.

5 years - Price is still at 2k, adoption is close to peaking, with most retailers accepting it online and some locally.

1 month - 450 - 800 - AVG Price = 650
1 Year - 500- 10000 - AVG Price = 4,000
5 Years - 4000-1,000,000 - AVG Price = 200,000+

Numbers are based on me just being overly optimistic + research from several other models two come to mind: / https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=366214.0 / https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=694401.0

167  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Looks like the scam U.S. currency is attacking Bitcoin again on: September 24, 2014, 04:37:38 AM
Frank Abagnale is scam artist, one of the best, that's a fact. Why would/does anybody believe him?

Because DiCaprio played him in a moive?

Who cares what he says, we know the truth about Bitcoin. Anyone who has taken a significant amount of time to research and explore the space would know his claims have 0 substance.

No way he formed his opinion by reading Bitcoin talk for several hundred hours, then conducted programming experiments to better understand the technology. I am sure he barely looked into Bitcoin, I doubt he even read Bitcoin.pdf, understands the Byzantine Generals problem, or what people use the internet for, or what a PDF file is.

Its a shame that either he actually believes this and that others will believe him without doing any personal research.

So the official statement from paypal is what it was needed to pull the trigger..? Glad it happened 450$ already on bitstamp Smiley lets see where it ends.

Wish this news was next week, I had a bunch of stock I was planning to sell oh well.
169  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: ‘Decentralized’ Bitcoin Wallet is available in iOS on: September 19, 2014, 09:16:45 PM
I'm the author of breadwallet, and also co-author of BIP39 and I took over maintenance of BIP38.

The word I've been using to describe it is 'standalone', but the coin desk writer went with the way that bitcoin.org describes such wallets, 'decentralized'.

I believe it's the only wallet out there now that is both BIP32 HD, and BIP37 SPV... someone correct me if I missed another. All the other mobile SPV wallets are based on bitcoinj which I don't think has BIP32 quite implemented yet, though it's getting close.

I designed breadwallet to be the most secure wallet out there. The iOS security model provides good protection against malware (you would need a remote jailbreak exploit for malware to steal your keys), and also all devices are hardware AES encrypted by default, so it's reasonably secure even in the event of physical theft. Web and desktop wallets are of course wide open to malware, and although android is better, it still has a serious malware problem, most devices don't receive timely security updates, and almost no one has android filesystem encryption turned on to protect from physical theft. Of those that do, many devices don't have hardware backed encryption, so the encryption is only as strong as the typically weak passwords people choose for unlocking their phones.

breadwallet also supports bip38 key import, bip70 payment protocol, and is open source. I'm pleased to say it's now listed on bitcoin.org "choose your wallet"

Thank's for all the hardwork! I downloaded the wallet and have been messing around with it on one of my iPhones.

While I have your ear, you ever consider implementing a name service for the wallet to map the addresses to friendly words? https://rushwallet.com/ currently uses:
 http://opennamesystem.org/
https://github.com/opennamesystem/openspecs
https://onename.io/

In essence you register the usernames u/ on the namecoin blockchain and associate some type of JSON data with the username containing information about the user, payment address etc. I see correlations with this type of service and DNS we use to map ip's to names.

I gave it a 5 Star rating Smiley

171  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: can governments prevent a cryptocurrency wallet from syncing with the network on: September 19, 2014, 08:32:59 PM
This is an open question to anybody who can answer it.

My question is can a government stop a wallet from syncing with the blockchain if they decide to ban the currency completely and not allow anybody to use the wallet?
Will the wallet still function as normal and download the blockchain and will the user be able to send coins from the wallet to any other wallet in the world?

If they can do this then is there any way that this can be bypassed?

Please explain in detail if you could

You don't even need the blockchain in order to make transactions, you can manually Create and then Sign your own transactions with your key then broadcast the transactions hex to the network. Their are a ton of services that allow for this- Blockchain.info, Toshi, much more
https://blockchain.info/pushtx
https://blockchain.info/decode-tx
https://toshi.io/docs/#relay-transaction

Here is some good information:
http://www.righto.com/2014/02/bitcoins-hard-way-using-raw-bitcoin.html

Don't bother using Python's Random function as a source for address generation, it is not cryptographically strong.

(Remember that one user who used to post youtube videos of him brute forcing wallets?, he was probably just generating addresses using Pythons random till he found one with a balance greater than 0 that someone used)

Sure, it's possible if you are using some shit service which relies basically on someone's website, which can either be shut down, blocked, threatened, or forced into using 'requirements' in order to continue being 'allowed' to continue with its 'license' to do business...  (A few sites / services, including exchanges, which too many people rely upon come to mind, that require or try to encourage you to use your 'realname' identity so they can later give it up to The Others, insert a few that come to mind here.)

But what alternatives are available to the failed (or at least, highly vulnerable) website-based model?  Not many, admittedly, but the numbers are increasing.  Decentralized, distributed p2p markets (as distributed software) of which I am personally aware, number right now at about 12, with some already being used and having development further refined and others being more in a testing and early development stage, though I'm completely sure that there are many more that I'm totally unaware of. An exchange alternative that is P2P (not the only one emerging, but here it is):
https://gist.github.com/drwasho/aa6ab79e92f2a876073e
https://github.com/OpenBazaar/OpenBazaar

Some possibility to help address parts of the overall _privacy_ problem (not a total solution or anything, just part of an exploration)
https://github.com/darkwallet/stealth.js

Also, your IP address can be temporarily blocked or even banned - I'm not saying it will happen to you, I'm just saying it's possible.  That doesn't mean you can't find a way to keep using bitcoin, I am just pointing out the obvious here.

p.s. Zerocash (_anonymity_ solution) is anticipated in Nov. or Dec. of 2014, hoping for the best when that release is out.

I am not certain if you are assuming my workflow suggests using an actual online wallet service to store your Bitcoin. I would never do such a thing as this is how I see others lose Bitcoin. What I was suggesting was using addresses that you generated offline, so never actually storing bitcoin on a machine that has a network card or drivers. You then create an unsigned transaction, then sign the transaction and paste the resulting hex into one of the sites or nodes that is available, so they broadcast your transaction to the network and it gets mined into a block. You are kind of right about the centralization of this method as their arent many places to post signed transactions anonymously, but nothing is stopping us from creating more places/APIs to do so, We got nearly 3 Identical API's that do push transactions this week. Also your right that your IP address can be blocked by services etc. It is easy to change IP, takes less than 5 minutes on-top of that, most have access to VPN/Proxies.

I remember reading about Zero Cash around January of last year, if this ends up having significant improvements over the Bitcoin Protocol, then Bitcoin might adapt any beneficial changes which are possible to implement or hardforks to implement. I don't see Bitcoin being taken over by another chain at this point, although it is certainly possible. I am pretty skeptical towards alternative coins in general, however I feel like its an example of Darwinism. The coins with the most innovation tend to survive and those that are nothing other than find replaces of "Bit" and an older Timestamp and string die off.

Edit: Might be thinking of Zerocoin not Zerocash
172  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are People Still Care about Bitcoin? on: September 19, 2014, 06:41:02 PM
I do believe that Bitcoin is probably one of the most amazing technological invention , and it changes my mind about currency , money and trading ..
but look at the price , i think it just constanly downwards right?
are people still care about investing in bitcoin? are they only wanna get rich by bitcoin? How many people out there loving the concept of cryptocurrency?  Huh

I want to use the technology to its fullest potential, right now its not being used to its potential. I see so many ways that Bitcoin or digital currencies can embed themselves in our society, and traditional media/advertising.

It would be great if listening to Pandora Radio a QR Code was displayed that just auto purchased and downloaded the song to your library or your watching an Advertisement for a digital good on television/Internet you can probably conduct sales during advertising now.

Currently its possible to buy music etc via Pandora Radio, Itunes, but the amount of steps involved to purchase the song, information required Name etc is too much. Additionally buying individual songs for 99 cents is pretty absurd, cryptographic currencies would allow artists to sell songs for very small prices and I think more people will spend money.

Personally I have never donated to charities in my past using Cash, now that I can easily toss them a donation electronically anonymously, I have donated to more causes than I can recall at this point.

Dox probably is not real at all since its been quite sometime ~11 days since the account was used after it was compromised and no one knows still who Satoshi is.
175  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How can we prevent similar tragedies in the future? on: September 19, 2014, 04:51:07 PM
I don't get why scum were advertising for them too, knowing it had to have been a scam.

Honestly... your advertising a gambling website Primedice, albeit this is reputable currently, who knows maybe one day it will be come a "scam" because the operator loses all the Bitcoin or something else happens to shut down the site. (Lets hope not we need sites like Primedice)

Then someone else will criticize you for advertising the Scam site in your signature.

176  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How can we prevent similar tragedies in the future? on: September 19, 2014, 01:29:14 AM

Unfortunately history is filled with examples of people that fail to learn from past experiences.

very true, many people invested in bitcoinia, then in pirates BS&T and then in MTGOX.. what do all these 3 things have in common, they all involve putting funds into addresses NOT OWNED by the person..

This is the biggest trend I see with people losing Bitcoin, people should never feel comfortable when they keep Bitcoin on Addresses generated by someone other than them-self.

Its not much different than using unloaded paper wallets that someone else gave you, then hoping they did-int make a copy of the key pairs and won't take it back at any point.

Generate your own key pairs, and you generate some peace of mind.
177  Economy / Speculation / Re: Should we be worried about bitcoin value drop? on: September 18, 2014, 08:08:52 PM
Should we? or shall we stay calm and bitcoin on?

The answer to this question is the same to your question about worrying about value drop. Did Bitcoin's technology change in the past 24 Hours? No

Simple answer in this case is, No, don't be worried about the price drop. I could care less, I would care if this price drop was in correlation to a change with how Bitcoin works, I don't really care what people are trading its value at. I intend to the coins I own in their pure form
178  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Spam transaction advertising laxotrade on: September 18, 2014, 08:02:48 PM
I received 0.0001 BTC a week and a half ago with some spam text advertising laxotrade.com

Anyone know anything about this website?

https://blockchain.info/tx/19725ca17feeee5b2dd014b180da7130b7c94f06911a28302dde2ac6699d90a8

www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=laxotrade.com

Who's brave enough to visit the site?

Do not visit the site, Their was the same thread about this someone made last week, it seems like Laxotrade is spam advertising people by sending them some Satoshis. I would wager that they are trying too acquire private keys some how.
179  Economy / Speculation / Re: I need to retire already on: September 18, 2014, 05:52:43 PM
OK guys and gals, I've 80 bitcoins (did have 410, but sold most to buy a house last September. Bad timing or what!)
Anyhoo, I'm sick of work and figure if bitcoins get to $15,000 I can retire.
When do you reckon that will happen?

Funny thing is we are all the OP, so the OP's moon is 15000. My moon is anything above 4000. Have faith man, Satoshi is still holding his coins.
