most probably not, if it has not been solved by now it's most probably gone for eternety don't you think?
Depends I suppose, how long is eternity? Shouldn't that be about… 10000 years? isn't eternity infinite or unending time ? Yeah but like, isn't 10000 years reaaaaaally long? It's all depends on what scale you are, 10000 is long in the human life scale, but on the universe scale 10000 years is not even a second of our life so which is it? How long is your life?

I don't think we will ever break 4 digits unless these things happen:
1. A go-to person if something happens. Right now, it seems bitcoins best tech support is reddit and google. People, especially the more non-technical people, if they have a problem they want to talk to a person. I know this defeats the purpose of decentralization but face it, it needs to happen.
2. Higher difficulty. At first you guys are thinking what? I know, let me explain. If there is a higher difficulty, there is less chance that a 51% attack can occur, and thus double spending, forks, etc. If we can get a higher difficulty, to make the chances of a 51% attack basically 0, more merchants can adopt zero confirm transactions, or at the very most 1. 6 will seem like set in stone basically.
3. Goverment/legal support. Bitcoins, if ever wants to become a valid payment method, needs to comply with governments. If it wants to be international, that's going to take some work. Considering how long it takes for an international effort to happen, I seriously doubt that Bitcoin will be a legal globally accepted way to pay. if we can get the majority, say the US, China (big one right here), and most of Europe we should be okay.
4. MORE ATMS - ATMS > Adoption Rate > Liquidty > Market Stabiliation > Etc....
That's all I got from the top of my head if your looking for a numerical estimate? I'd say like 7-15 years.

Its alive, but its not profitable. I don't want to resell my stuff later down the road to some ignorant gamers. I myself am a gamer, who wants a GPU that's been running 100% for who knows how long?
Don't resell if you don't want to. GPUs commonly have 3 year warranties, plenty of time for ROI if you keep up with the trends. On the other hand I always disclose that my GPUs were used for mining when I sell them. Maybe I'm getting a few bucks less because of that. Never had a single complaint. Running at 100% does not automatically mean something bad. It doesn't "automatically" mean bad. Sure, Ill give you that. Most of the time its usually 100% stuck next to 5 cards doing the same thing, and depending on the algorithm, strain on the card. I never did buy used electronics, especially computer electronics. Now, I doubt I will ever with.

Invest in newest coin then sell at peak
Most of the past coins have failed and most of the new coins will fail. Also, it is very hard to tell when the price reaches peak. Thats true. What I do is I look into a coin, I ask myself "Do I see myself actually legitimately using this coin in a couple months, or even a year? Does it have a strong dev and community?" Stuff like that. When you actually research coins, your bets are much safer. If your in it for a quick buck, market manipulation is probably more of your thing, you could ask to join a private pump group or something.

Mining is dead is just BS. Something always comes along and make it work. I buildt two rigs (4x280x each) in september. Took a ride on the Dogecointrain and the Maxcointrain, then i sold it all to gamers in february for 60% of what i payed for it. It worked out quite well. Also, i could turn off my usual 1500w of heating this winter. ![Wink](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/wink.gif) Now i have a few antminers, and they have soon made a ROI too. So mining is very much alive. Its alive, but its not profitable. I don't want to resell my stuff later down the road to some ignorant gamers. I myself am a gamer, who wants a GPU that's been running 100% for who knows how long?

Is it still profitable to mine bitcoin?
You will be better off with buying bitcoin directly. ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif) IMO if your looking for more potential, Litecoin and other scrypt coins. As scrypt ASICS hit the market, I'm banking on the fact that bitcoin prices went up as ASICS were introduced to bitcoins network; assuming that Litecoin will do the same. Right now it seems leasing the rig or getting on a multipool is most profitable way to mine currently. But as mentioned before, its better to buy the coins.

For 6k USD I'd buy coins personally... But if your set on buying a miner, I'd probably go scrypt asics. But if your set on SHA256 mining, 5000 ghz (Im assuming you mean gh/s) at that price is $/gh/s of 1.2 which isn't bad.

Hi guys, i have around $1100 to spend on something,
so ive been thinking on buying a new miner or build a gaming pc with (AMD cards so it can mine at night)
What do you guys think i should do?
a miner wont be a problem for me since i have free electricity.
Thanks
build a Litecoin-Miner Why build a miner when you can preorder some ASICs that are bound to hit in the next couple of months?
