162  Economy / Trading Discussion / [INFO] Bitcoin Exchanges: Transparency Data or Lack Thereof on: July 14, 2012, 11:22:53 PM
Bitcoin offers a strong level of privacy. In my view, any website functioning as an exchange and taking custody of customer funds does not have the luxury of anonimity.

The Bitcoin Wiki has a list of exchanges [1],[2] and there are many threads discussing them. This list is my attempt to provide profiles of the Top-10 real-time exchanges using publicly available data to help you evaluate counterparty risks even further. Bogus information is easy to fabricate, verify data from legitimate sources (i.e. Registration Authorities). Excluded are Money Transmitters, Online Wallets, In Person Traders, and market places. This list is ordered by Previous Month BTC trading volume.

163  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should a bitcoinica clone be put online ? on: July 14, 2012, 08:47:12 PM
What is the main difference between Bitcoinica and other trading platforms for you ?

Recently we finally opened futures trading on http://icbit.se , so I would like to know what features are missing there.

How is it not obvious to you? Do you not see all these people waiting for their money? Do you not see all these people who put their trust into an organisation getting burned?

Can you really not figure out that the feature you're missing is transparency and security and some sort of contractual obligation?

In addition to hazek's comment, I would like to add:

Options & Futures are derivatives (offered at icbit.se).
The Bitcoinica platform offers margin not derivatives.

As far as I know, margin is required to trade derivatives but derivatives aren't required to use margin.
164  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should a bitcoinica clone be put online ? on: July 14, 2012, 08:38:25 PM
Quote from: davout

Pros :
  • There is demand for gambling margin trading

I like what you did there.  Grin

Margin trading itself isn't gambling in my opinion (yes, we can argue this forever), I like to use certain references when I have doubts:
1. The Prudent Man Rule: Harvard College v Amory (1830) 26 Mass (9 Pick) 446
2. Internal Revenue Code (IRC): Section 165(d),income-tax deductions of gambling losses.
3. Various US Federal & State laws distinguishing games of chance versus games of skill.

With that out of the way...

I believe margin trading offers the best means (so far) to establish a bank offering interest on deposits for the Bitcoin community. Where the establishment's profit marging is (margin interest rate) - (deposit interest rate). Notice from the posts on Bitcoinica threads how people were using the site as a bank.
165  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should a bitcoinica clone be put online ? on: July 14, 2012, 06:18:00 PM
With the leak of the code I'm asking myself whether it would be a good idea to setup a bitcoinica clone.

Pros :
  • Would make some good money
  • There is demand for gambling margin trading
  • Half the profits could go to the people who lost money because of Bitcoin Consultancy/Bitcoinica/[insert scapegoat here]
  • The app itself has never been broken into (even though it's quite surprising when reading the code)

Cons :
  • Needs moar reverse-engineering/fixing
  • Needs moar testing
  • ...

Thoughts ?

I like this project.

My understanding is that Intersango LTD ( or Bitcoin Consultancy LTD, Bitcoinica LP, Core Credit LTD) owns the code, maybe they will be kind enough to Open Source it?

Quote from: kangasbros
However I don't think that credit check is necessary for this kind of site, if you create the necessary precautions (forced liquiditations).

I agree with this comment. Forced liquidations would reduce the risk for the exchange/broker and make credit checks unnecessary.

Quote from: elux

The original code surely belongs to someone, regardless of whether it's been leaked.

Though given the leak it looks trivial to reverse engineer and write a clone from scratch.

I agree.
If, for whatever reason, the owner(s) refuse to release the code, you can always make a better clone including the options to adjust the authorized leverage per contract (BTC/USD, BTC/EUR, BTC/AUD, etc.) and add/remove contracts based on liquidity and/or market demands.
166  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: we need a comprehensive guide for making SAFE bitcoin apps!! on: July 13, 2012, 08:24:51 PM
+1 for this initiative

I like the whole idea of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Transparency, Disclosures, Best Practices, etc for sites that take custody of customers funds. Not so much as a requirement for starting the site but as a way for potential/current customers to evaluate the risk involved when dealing with them.

The Bitcoin Protocol is innovative but financial institutions on the other hand have been around for a very long time.

Caveat emptor
167  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: we need a comprehensive guide for making SAFE bitcoin apps!! on: July 13, 2012, 07:47:40 PM
Do trading sites like MtGox, BTC-E, BitStamp, Intersango, bitFloor, GLBSE, etc need a hot wallet at all?
168  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: why did trade hill give up? on: July 10, 2012, 09:41:49 PM
lol, You guys are going to derail this thread!  Cheesy

I did lump Liberty Reserve with Paypal, Dwolla, etc in the group as examples of funding options I've seen at some exchanges in the past.

RL= Real Life

I used the RL example because the U.S. brokerage disclosures, documents, FAQs clearly state Bank-to-Bank or Brokerage-to-Brokerage transactions only (exception is stock certificates & Treasuries). I have never heard of anyone using Paypal to do this either and most of these brokerages don't accept cash because of money laundering, fraud, regulations, etc.

Hope this clears it up, sorry for the confusion.

Cheers!

Edit: Clarified further
169  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: linux-finally had it with microsoft any advice on: July 10, 2012, 08:47:54 PM
Hello reg,

You may want to start off with a new user friendly distribution of Linux, for example:

http://www.linuxmint.com/
http://www.ubuntu.com/
http://fedoraproject.org/

... so that you don't have to worry so much about the command line and updating packages.

Distrowatch has a nice list of many distributions: http://distrowatch.com/

Most of the popular distributions have LiveCDs which allows you to test them out without having to format & install.
170  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: why did trade hill give up? on: July 10, 2012, 07:50:45 PM
According to the documents here: http://dockets.justia.com/docket/california/candce/3:2012cv01082/252135/

Dwolla filed a motion to compel Tradehill to submit to arbitration, and the case was dismissed because of that, if I am reading it correctly.

So only Dwolla's motion was dismissed not Tradehill's entire case?

This would make more sense to me, since I believe Tradehill will win the case. Although, I'm still confused as to why Tradehill or any other exchange based in the USA would allow custormers to use Dwolla, Paypal, Liberty Reserve, etc to fund their accounts. As far as I know, standard practice for RL brokerage firms is customer's bank account to brokerage's bank account and vice-versa.
171  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: why did trade hill give up? on: July 10, 2012, 07:04:50 PM
i have been away from the bitcoin scene for a while and just catching up on everything.

why did trade hill shut down, the actual reasons? they seemed very promising.

A few online articles go into some of the details:

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2012/03/lawsuit-illustrates-bitcoins-chargeback-problem/

http://www.americanbanker.com/issues/177_46/dwolla-bitcoin-exchange-tradehill-lawsuit-1047292-1.html

http://www.scribd.com/doc/84125326/Tradehill-v-Dwolla-Et-Al-Complaint-Filed-Copy

If I understood the most recent documents I read (Filed May 31st, 2012), the case was DISMISSED in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Case3:12-cv-01082-MMC Document34 Filed 05/31/2012
172  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Open Source Trading Platform on: July 08, 2012, 08:08:59 PM
Merely making a trading platform open source would add some small value, but what would really shake things up would be a P2P trading platform. Think of bitcoin itself compared to centralized banks, and make the same paradigm shift for owning shares/bonds. No central repository to get thwacked or controlled.

I really like GLBSE and find it to be a great benefit to the bitcoin community, but IMHO it would be better if sites like that were merely portals to the P2P share system - comparable to online wallets such as blockchain's.

Interesting comments, ShireSilver.

I've been searching older threads on this site and have found a few projects that were/are very interesting. With an average of 2000+ new threads and 50000+ new posts every month for the previous 12 months, it is not easy to keep track.

Although, my questions were for the exchange of non-P2P local currencies, I'll go ahead and reference the OP with some of these threads, post, links, etc as we find them.

Is anyone interested in starting a bounty for building something like this?
Is anyone interested in donating BTCs for a project like this?
Are there any programmers interested in working on a project like this? (getting paid in bounty or volunteer)

I am.

Cool... which part are you interested in, ThiagoCMC?

Okay, so I unlocked this thread and I'm using the other one to keep track of the results and wallets: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=91137.0

The second auction's balance is 1 BTC atm and we are at Block# 187941. The Ending Block is 188000 so only 59 blocks to go.

Edit: Auction finished, no takers.  Cry

Poker, eh? I'm guessing either EOHPoker or SOMER Blink. Grin

There are a few forum members here that play Eveonline that I know off. I personally was able to sell a few PLEX in private deals and had my own thread trying to buy/sell them but the problem is the risk of getting permabanned for violation of CCP's EULA/TOS. As a seller the risk is an account ban and the buyer gets a balance reduction of ISK for the amount of the trade. I gave it up after awhile because CCP is on a "Holy Crusade" to shit in their own Cheerios even though almost the entire gaming industry is heading towards a microtransaction business model and professional gamers will be a reality soon™.

Try sending Luceo a PM, I'm not sure if he's buying atm. His thread is: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=87176.0 .

For selling on a regular basis though, you are kind of on your own. ISK sellers usually build up a list of 100-200 trusted customers and communicate via IRC/IM/Skype etc. Keep in mind CCP's "PLEX For Snitches" reward so sooner or later someone might rat you out.
In my opinion, the risk of getting the banHammer for RMT is probably higher than getting stiffed by someone on this forum.

Good luck and fly safe mate!

Hello Xscribble,

Is this a one time sale or are you planning on selling them on a regular basis?

Thanks for the reply Nachtwind,

Sorry, I have one more question:

Q4: Is there a "Guest" account so I can take a look around without having to register?
