1601  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Recommendations on Router, Modem, Switch...? on: November 16, 2017, 01:36:54 AM
Most of my network infrastructure runs on Netgear "blue box" professional-grade switches, though I do have one very old 3Com 100BaseT switch still in use and a friend recently gave me an old "Dell" (by Cisco I think) switch that isn't in service yet (48 100BaseT and 2 Gigabit BaseT ports).
Mostly FS108 models, with one GS105 and a couple GS108 on recent purchases (they were on sale at the same price as a FS108 when I bought those).

I made the mistake ONCE of buying one of the Netgear "silver plastic box" consumer-grade switches - it barely made it past warrenttee period before it died, shortest-lived switch I have ever had.

I USED to have one of their blue-box 8 port 10Base-T "hub" models, but after 15+ years of service that one finally died on me - it was bought used in the first place, dunno how old it REALLY was when it died.

1602  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Bitmain Antminer S11 releasing! on: November 16, 2017, 01:27:59 AM
There is no S10.

There doesn't seem to be any significant probability of there ever BEING an S10, given Bitmain's normal naming model for their Bitcoin miners - but they MIGHT change that in the future.

The S5+ was kinda like what an S6 would have been, except it wasn't rack-mountable.

1603  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Gridcoin (GRC) - first coin utilizing BOINC - Official Thread on: November 16, 2017, 01:25:34 AM
Can there be an off change in gridcoin that shuts down every thing reliably? After attempted boinc some time ago I disliked the way it kept hogging ressources without anyone's knowledge in spite of declaring no activity, despite a programm shut down there were processes left operating within the backgrounnd. (It had been established to shut down totally). I

Sounds like you were just hitting the "X" button on BOINC instead of using he actual "exit" function that gives you the choice of shutting down ALL processes not just the manager window.

 That's NOT a "Gridcoin" issue.
1604  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Are 1070 TI's the next best GPU for mining? 4.7 sols per watt on: November 16, 2017, 01:24:19 AM
Is there any degrade in hash performance with the mini's 1070ti vs standard 1070ti?  Is their degrade in cooling?  I am getting my 1070 ti msi titantiums this friday, can't wait to give it a spin.

The 1080 mini was a hair marginal on cooling if you pushed it anywhere close to it's default 180 watt TDP, but if you run it lower for better efficiency it should stay pretty cool.
1070 ti mini has the same default TDP so it should have the same cooling "curve" as the 1080.

I don't have a 1070 ti Zotac Mini yet but I DO have a couple of their 1070 and one of their 1080 models.

1605  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Sixth alt coin thread I forgot to mod last thread. on: November 16, 2017, 01:11:11 AM

FYI: GPU0 - 1080 TI, GPU1 - 1070 Mini, GPU2 - 1080 TI  (GPU0 & GPU2 are the exact same 1080 TI make/model)

https://www.flickr.com/gp/157030813@N04/X4d99y

You appear to have one of your 1080ti set for a MUCH lower TDP level than the other one.

HP storage products are bloody EXPEN$IVE, not cost effective for BURST mining.

Or are you setting up yet ANOTHER altcoin as BURST competition?

1607  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Anyone use Hughesnet for mining internet connection? on: November 16, 2017, 01:01:34 AM
2000ms would probably drive you up a percent or so on stale shares - depends on what your're mining, something with faster blocks like Litecoin will be more affected by latency than something like Bitcoin would be.

1608  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Will ETH ever rise in price like Dash and Bitcoin Cash? on: November 16, 2017, 12:51:26 AM
DASH is also a mature coin - and pre-dates ETH by a couple years or more.

BCH on the other hand seems to be Bitmain's attempt to take over Bitcoin - it says a lot that Bitmain is the only "major player" actively PUSHING BCH.

1609  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: 930~960w on 1000w psu. safe or not? on: November 16, 2017, 12:49:50 AM

Ignore all the naysayers, a 1000W PSU is BUILT to be run AT 1000W Output

Standard ATX type power supplies are NOT designed or built for 24/7 operation at full output.

 Even the GOOD ones.

"SERVER" specific power supplies are a different story, as the units they are designed to go in NORMALLY are operated 24/7.

1610  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Typical nicehash delta on: November 14, 2017, 11:23:20 PM
Non-fixed orders are subject to other folks "competing" with your price - fixed orders are guarenteed to get their hash FIRST no matter what (unless there isn't enough hash to fill ALL of the fixed orders, then they compete with the OTHER fixed orders for the hash and nothing else is left over).

1611  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: my GPU has 6 & 8 pin connectors , which to use !!! ? on: November 14, 2017, 11:20:27 PM
As a GENERAL rule, use both - some cards specifically check and won't fire up at all if you don't.

On the other hand, it's WEIRD to see a RX 470 with dual power connectors - even a high-overclocked one only needs an 8-pin (keep in mind the PCI-E BUS supplies 75 watts per spec, so bus + 8 pin = 225 total available watts to the card).

Try it with just the 8, if that works don't worry about it.

1612  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Will ETH ever rise in price like Dash and Bitcoin Cash? on: November 14, 2017, 11:13:48 PM
ETH DID rise in price - a LOT - back in the Febuary to April timeframe.

1613  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: vega 56 or vega 64 for generic alt coin mining? on: November 14, 2017, 11:12:43 PM
Better to not mix brands on one machine, the stability suffers quite a bit.

Also, Vega is only GOOD at Monero mining, it's pretty easily beat on a $/hash or $/watt or often BOTH basis on everything else I've seen figures for it (D.Net RC5-72 work being the ONLY other exception, but that's not really cryptocoin mining related).

My single Vega 56 doesn't run particularly hot, even though it's pushed a bit PAST it's "default TDP" currently.
Can't speak to the 64 as I don't have any of those.

Might want to consider waiting for non-reference VEGA designs to start showing up (in theory later this month per some "prelimanary" announcements but no solid announcements yet that I've seen) if you're worried about cooling.

1614  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: luck.. what's wrong with this math? on: November 14, 2017, 11:04:43 PM
The issue isn't that 1 or 2 are invalid, the issues is the mathematics of calculating an average.

1615  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: The Russian cottage heated by Bitcoin mining on: November 14, 2017, 11:02:54 PM

That is crazy to hear about a $400 heating bill.

 I haven't had a "heating bill" for about 3 years now - I have a year-round COOLING bill.

Or at least "ventilation" even in the winter, which sorta counts.

1616  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: APW3 power cord 220 volt question on: November 14, 2017, 11:01:18 PM
There should be no issue with replacing a NEMA 14 socket with a NEMA 6 (or L6) type socket.
The wiring is all there after all - just don't USE the neutral wire.

There ARE adapters (often used for motor homes) to connect a NEMA L6-30 plug to a NEMA 14 socket.
Places like Home Depot, Menards, or Lowes should have those in stock.
1617  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Running Antminer fans at 100% constantly? on: November 14, 2017, 10:55:16 PM
The Delta fans Bitmain uses are DESIGNED for long life at 100% fan speed.

1618  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: first bitmain antminer S10 speculation thread (probably) on: November 14, 2017, 10:53:12 PM
It's been awhile of no news about s10
anyone heard anything?

I waiting here to buy those s10 antminers

You're probably going to die before a S10 model shows up - as has already been explained.

S11 - likely to be a while unless Bitmain decides to do a "new model" on the same 14/16 nm node but on one of the "newer more efficient" process varients - for a fairly SMALL gain in efficiency.
1619  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Mining farms for heating houses? on: November 14, 2017, 10:48:40 PM
120F is enough to prevent bacteria growth in a hot water tank.
1620  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Are 1070 TI's the next best GPU for mining? 4.7 sols per watt on: November 14, 2017, 10:41:42 PM
4 GTX 1070 ti run at the OPTIMAL EFFICIENCY ballpark of 106 watts (give or take about 4 in my recent testing) should be comfortable on a good-quality 750 watt PS like a Seasonic X-750 Gold or EVGA G2 750 with enough left over to run the rest of the system.
If you run them at full 180 watt TDP though, that's 720 watts average draw which is NOT going to run reliably on a single 750.

5 of them at 110 watt TDP are quite comfortable running on a single 850 - which pulls very close to 6 amps at the wall with a Seasonic X-850 or EVGA G2 850 and a FX-8350E based AM3+ system (CPU makes up for it's higher power draw vs an Intel G4600/4560 type system by mining Monero at about 320 hash/s).

5 of them on a low-power system would probably be close to 5.5 amps (might want to push TDP down to 106 or so to get to 5.3-5.4 range) - which is a comfortable fit on a 20 amp circuit for 3 such rigs.

And yes, if you have not maxed out your available power and that power is cheap enough, it makes sense to run them at higher TDP levels for the extra hashrate - part of the reason I showed so many TDP power points in my testing.

If you ARE pushing the limits of your available power, though, it CAN make sense to aim for better efficiency so you can run more cards and get more overall hashrate even if your power is FREE.

Also, the more efficient points tend to let the card run cooler and with less fan speed, for better longevity.
