Is this bad or very bad for monero?

Will this implementation allow Satoshi to spend his coins without anyone knowing?

No..

Thus, it's very good for monero.

Personally I don't think Bitcoiners will ever implement a way for "Satoshi" to be able to move his coins without no one knowing... I mean shit, if Satoshi is really still alive and hanging around, do you really think that he won't just cash out a good portion of his stash for other investments into gold/silver/fiat/etc.?  It's like he's (his coins) are held captive as some prisoner in a world that he "single handedly" created, which is insane to me.  If he were to move his coins, then Satoshi's baby he created would essentially be decapitated and the trust people have in Bitcoin would be lost forever.

And then other people who are heavily invested into Bitcoin sit there on their high horse and say that fungibility isn't a big concern... I feel bad for Satoshi.

Who knows if Satoshi even has the keys to those coins.  He could have just mined without actually believing BTC would become what it has.

If that's the case, that could possibly be the biggest TIFU for the entire history of the internet lol.

It may sound crazy to you but satoshi probably does not care. As he was able to create something so great, he has likely either made enough money in the past, or is confident that he can make in the future.

Compare to Crypto Kingdom, which is not nearly as great an invention. My position is currently worth about €400k, yet there is no way to sell it and actually I recently "donated" about half of it to the game so that I am only entitled to the profits. If I am completely fine with the state of affairs, surely satoshi is as well, after all his capabilities are much larger than mine.

Well I certainly can't see anyone "not caring" about an estimated 400 mill.  He/she/they must be billionaires if that's the case, and if that is true, why would "Satoshi" even take the time of creating something that essentially replaces the fiat system in the first place?  I think Satoshi was very well aware of what he was doing; and even though he/she/they were probably well off, I don't see how Satoshi could write off a hundreds of millions of dollars.

What I'm trying to get at is not about Satoshi's wealth in general, or the fact that he cares or not about Bitcoin any more... It's more of the notion that he couldn't move his coins even if he did have the keys or wanted too in general.  That, to me, illustrates the importance of fungibility and Bitcoins main problem that Monero solves.
1602  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Latest Zero Hedge Article on Bitcoin on: February 27, 2016, 04:52:35 PM
...

I really do not understand the hate felt for BTC there, ZH-ers tend to like gold after all.  And BTC fits right in with the mostly libertarian zeitgeist there.  In the comments below the article, you can read what the fans and detractors have to say.  You can even see (if you're a ZH member) how many up arrows vs. downs I got (first comment, my moniker there is "38BWD22").
-snip-

Unfortunately... Bitcoiners today don't really fit the narrative of the "libertarian" mindset that was once the initial drive for starting up the Bitcoin project.  I wasn't around during then, but from what I've read and seen that was posted in the past by Satoshi and others was to try and create something pure and completely decentralized that doesn't have any government influence... Now people are welcoming the governments and allowing them to intervene with open arms because it might raise the prices/adoption rates.  People who come into bitcoin now are in it for the speculatory "make a quick buck" scheme now... not for any greater purpose other than that.

Haha, absolutely not!  But when I hear "Satoshi Round Table" I think some meeting with the top dogs in development to talk about Bitcoin primarily... I understand now it's more of cryptocurrencies in general, which is awesome.  Will there be a video of it after the meeting is over?

I was there last year, it is a well marketed event but I am sure fluffypony can do without me this time  Wink

The problem with that level people is that everyone is already hands full of work. I did not have the resources to start any projects with anyone there, but it was cool to shake hands with Roger Ver, Erik Voorhees, Brock Pierce, Vitalik Buterin etc. I pitched Crypto Kingdom in the main venue, but to my knowledge nobody bought in. CKG is up 1,000% in one year measured in fiat, 500% in BTC, but that would be peanuts for these guys anyway.

There will most probably be no video.

Fluffy's lifetime achievement - invitation to Satoshi Round Table. I'd love to find out who invited him...

I'd love to know your lifetime achievement as well... Sharing is caring  Wink

is there a GUI wallet?

Not yet, we recently funded a proposal to get it finished. See (there are also some screenshots there):

https://forum.getmonero.org/8/funding-required/2476/the-official-qt-gui-project

His work and the activity can be followed on:

https://github.com/mbg033?tab=activity

https://github.com/mbg033/monero-core

https://github.com/mbg033/bitmonero

The current options are:

-MyMonero, which is a web wallet and very convenient to use -> https://MyMonero.com.

-Simplewallet, this is a CLI, which might have a bit of a learning curve but does better in preserving your privacy. Binaries here -> https://getmonero.org/downloads/. You need to sync the whole blockchain from scratch though to use simplewallet. Syncing from scratch is done with the daemon (bitmonerod). If you want, I can walk you through on how to use simplewallet at IRC. Alternatively, feel free to ask any questions here.

-Jwinterm's lightwallet, which uses either your own or a remote node. See -> https://getmonero.org/getting-started/choose (at the bottom). Instructions on how to run a remote node here -> https://www.moneroclub.com/node

-Lastly, there is https://Moneroaddress.org which can be used to generate a paper wallet. It is simply a port of -> https://github.com/moneromooo-monero/monero-wallet-generator and can be used offline.

Again, if you have any question, don't hesistate to ask!

So, I'm still confused about generating a secure paper wallet... if I were to bring up the web page, disconnect my computer from the internet and then generate a new wallet while offline, would that be acceptable in terms of security? I want to create a paper wallet, but I need a ELI5 version of what to do to create something that's very secure to store my xmr.

Also, if I deposit xmr into said paper wallet... how do I view the amount of xmr I have on there and spend them if I want later on down the road?

For your first question/scenario, it just depends on how paranoid you are (which may in turn depend on the amount). If you take your computer offline before generating, never commit the generated seed to disk, and restart before reconnecting, then you're very likely going to be ok.

You can tell how much money is in the paper wallet by noting when you send money to it. Wink

You could also save the viewkey and create a watch-only wallet that would use resources to make sure no one else has somehow deposited funds to your cold wallet. Smiley

If you ever spend from the "cold wallet" (which doesn't make sense to me), then balance calculation becomes more difficult (but will be reported by the program that spent the funds).

Edit: there is a simple-ish tool that can confirm that your cold wallet did indeed receive what you think you sent to it (like http://xmr.llcoins.net/checktx.html). This takes very little processing since it's only checking a specific transaction.

Ok that mostly makes sense... but I'm not quite sure what you mean by the bolded part.  Sorry if it's kind of basic common knowledge about computers, but I'm not sure what you mean about making sure not to commit the generated seed to the disk?  What disk?
1606  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: February 26, 2016, 07:21:45 PM

It should work.  Fluffypony (mymonero admin) is at the Satoshi Round Table conference so he might not be able to respond right away.  Try it again, maybe you typed it in wrong.  If you already tried that Im sure someone else here will chime in with some advice.

Sorry, I'm out of the loop on this one... why is Fluffy going to the Satoshi round table?  Is he someone that actively contributes to the Bitcoin protocol?  Isn't he at the head of the core devs for just Monero?

He sure is.  Its a crypto currency conference, not all attendees are directly involved with BTC development.  I'm not a dev on any crypto coin project but would love to attend.  Are you saying I should not??

Just now occurred to me.. when the crypto revolution happens and everyone is using digital currencies for everything, how in the world are we supposed to use XMR, AEON, BTC to snort blow, "make it rain" on strippers, etc.?  *Sigh* I guess we'll have to behave once the economy has matured to a more sophisticated way of doing business... And people said dealing in cryptos were fun... my ass  Wink

Price goes up, trolls come out to play. It's like an immutable law of physics that price and troll activity are positively correlated Tongue

Quite the opposite - troll developers paid whale spineless traders to create a pump and a value trap for unsuspecting victims. When this moNERO black turd tanks, it will go to 2-3 million mkt cap, lower than before.

So you are saying that every single one of the many devs monero has concocted some plan to:

1) Develop a coin that has completely different code base from bitcoin
2) Develop miners, OS, wallets, etc.
3) Not pre mine
4) Take time out of their day to continually work on it for a fraction of what their skills would normally acquire at a "normal job"

just to rip off some people for a couple of extra BTC's?

Really?? Wowwee!  Shocked

 Wink

Edit: Not to mention, PAY someone to do the pump and dump for them??

The only strong selling pressure now is lying on 21500. Let's see if we have a similar rally with ETH. Roll Eyes

We might have overpaid the GUI a bit Roll Eyes.
Still dirt cheap for skilled developers though, not to mention fluffypony's contributions..

Is fluffypony's personal Monero address known? And does he accept direct donations?

I think there is only a publicly known address for the "Core development team" to send direct contributions.  Could be wrong though..

The price is getting ever so close to the $1 mark... do you guys think there will be a resistance in USD now that we crossed the resistance point in BTC?

1613  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: February 13, 2016, 02:28:03 AM
Just had a notification on my phone that we reached $.70 a while ago!  Shocked

Primer, how you feeling buddy?  Roll Eyes

Looks like the ideal setup to break out of this resistance zone (155-168k satoshi).

Daily MACD flipping to green (confirmation will come if the current daily closes):

Lending rates shooting up, so a lot of (possible) fuel:

I've started to notice that people on the trollbox on poloniex are starting to realize what xmr really is and that dash is a scam coin... Idk, I've only been watching for like 10 or so minutes, but it seems people are starting to wake up and starting to realize what Dash really is.

** MONERO MISSIVE SPECIAL EDITION - 2015 YEAR IN REVIEW **

Thanks for sharing and great write-up by fluffypony. Truly amazing what has been achieved in just one year, big thanks to everybody that contributed and/or donated.

Absolutely amazing... and I think this is a way more defined governance model than any other crypto has including Bitcoin's (if Bitcoin even has a "governance" model).

But quick question though, I thought Shen was apart of the core team?  I didn't see NobleSir on the core team list... or maybe he is just a paid contributor that has extensive knowledge in CT?
1616  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: February 11, 2016, 05:23:36 PM
This is pretty interesting to say the least... Looks like from the last "pump" we had, it gained +.0003 within a couple hours before it dropped back down again.  This might be theoretically a level of resistance and makes people feel a little bit uneasy when it sky rockets this much in such a short amount of time.

Edit:  Just saw this posted on poloniex... some guy has made a pretty good comparison of the Eth & XMR charts over time that makes XMR look like it's about to go to the moon  Shocked

Anyone want to bet on Superbowl?  My Pats lost to Fucking Manning So I'm Betting against that prick!

Last year was a close one!

Money line has Denver +195 and Carolina -220, so I'm willing to bet 50 XMR that the Broncos win v. your 100 XMR that the Panthers win. Gotta let me know before kickoff if you wanna bet...

75:100 and you got yourself a deal.

Hmmm, alright, you got it. I don't have a rooting interest, but I do have hunch that Manning is gonna go out on top. May the best Monerito win.

Also, if I don't respond after the game, don't be alarmed, I may be slightly to severely intoxicated. I'll get in touch by tomorrow evening to send you 75 XMR or send address for you to send 100 XMR Smiley

When you get the chance, shoot over your address. Haha I guess I underestimated the Denver D. All I know is Payton didn't win that game..

Win some you lose some Sad

I would like to bet too in XMR... I'm from Carolina, so I couldn't take you up on your offer. I've been rooting for the panthers since I was born, so it wouldn't be right lol.
