16061  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: (Why) is vanitygen less resource-intensive than mining? on: March 25, 2015, 04:33:02 PM
As I understand it, vanitygen works in a very similar way to standard Bitcoin mining. Both processes use either the CPU or the GPU to solve SHA-256 hashes. And yet, when I run vanitygen on my laptop, it can do so for days on end with no excessive overheating and little performance impact. I've never tried mining on my laptop before but it seems to be universally discouraged because it is said that any laptops that do mine will inevitably overheat and fail. This also seems to be true for mining non-SHA-256 coins where no ASIC currently exists.

I have a fairly basic understanding of how vanitygen and Bitcoin mining are similar, as well as how they differ. With vanitygen, you look for a private key that corresponds to a desired address. To do this, you find the SHA-256 hash of the private key. If it doesn't correspond to an address you're looking for, then it moves onto the next one. With mining, you hash the block header repeatedly, changing one parameter until you find a specified target. Both processes use the SHA-256 hashing algorithm.

So why can I run vanitygen for four days straight with my laptop staying cool and yet I can't mine cryptocurrencies like Darkcoin (or Bitcoin before ASICs) with the same laptop?

You can mine on your laptop.  The problem isn't keeping it cool if it can run vanitygen without overheating.  The problem is that your laptop isn't powerful enough to mine enough coins to pay for the electricity it's using.  Hope that helps.

name a figure, I go away...

You've already pointed out that we've returned profits to all our IPO investors after only a couple short years, distributed more BTC than was raised in the IPO, and continue to distribute BTC on a weekly basis.  How about you stay and keep asking questions instead?

You claim to be a Bitcoin entity, yet you show profits in dollars.
Have you no shame?

Try harder.

Still no btc profits after all this time?

Actually amazing. Maybe there's hope for Anduck after all?

Doubt it. The solid silver isn't as desirable and he's asking too much. Smiley

You keep saying the solid silver isn't as desirable.  I think your opinion is not the consensus, nor is it consistent with the attitude of coin collectors.  I own both and prefer the solid silver.

Heh heh. Just spent 0.1 btc to mess up the scale on your nastypool chart. Take that!
 Cheesy

Looks like it passed the stress test.  Smiley

I am happy to announce a new NastyPool node available. It is located in east USA. The main NastyPool webpage is updated to let users choose the main or alternate pool node information. NastyPoP and P2Pool payout methods are available on the new node using same username and port rules as main node.

The hostname of the new node: us-east01.nastyfans.org

Miners should ping to check which node is faster to access. The main node (nastyfans.org) has a excellent internet connection so miners should not assume the alternate node is faster just because they are in the USA.

Many thanks to TheAnalogKid for hosting this node! I am honored to work together with such a skilled and dedicated fan.

A US NastyPool node is now available courtesy of TheAnalogKid for those who may be interested.

Coinbase is the best BTC exchange I've ever came across. However, I only use instant buy and at that I don't buy in large amounts. Of course you're going to hit their fraud detection if you're trying to do some sketchy ass shit. They've even been known to ban people for depositing to BTC gambling sites because those don't do any taxes. So sorry your were caught on the wrong end of the best exchange. Maybe try not to act like a drug seller/buyer/fraudster/money launderer next time you're trying to buy or sell huge amounts of something you probably won't report to the IRS  Grin

Sketchy ass shit?  I tried to buy a BTC.  What is sketchy about that?  They had all my info and it was verified.  The only sketchy thing was them reversing the sale when the BTC price rose.

MTR has requested that the long term escrow funds be released to them.  Since this was billed as "long term" escrow and it has only been 6 days, I want to give the community an opportunity to weigh in here.  They have completed the necessary goals to release the BTC, but I feel that at least a 7 day period should pass with me stating my intent to release escrow due to the circumstances.  If you have any concerns regarding the release of escrow, please PM me.  I will post on this thread again 24 hours before releasing escrow.

Below are the following objectives that MTR needed to complete before having the funds released.  Since a couple of these objectives are based off of opinion with words like "reputable" and "secured", I am giving investors one last chance to object to this escrow being released.  I you have any concerns to bring to my attention before this escrow is released, PM me immediately.  I am planning to release the funds tomorrow.

MTR releases WhitePaper and Technical Specifications prior to IPO commencement.
MTR publicly reveals GitHub Source Code files within (30) days
MTR Windows/Mac wallets compiled and released to public within (30) days
MTR developers confirm mining pool to host 10K MTR POW period within (30) days
MTR establishes block chain explorer within (30) days
MTR launches secured web wallet within (60) days
MTR listed on reputable Crypto exchange within (120) days

And if it doesn't take place, you reimburse everyone ? People who sent from online wallets other than blockchain will be hard to reimburse !

Ideally I would like to donate the funds to another charity, as without signed messages or reimbursing the sending address it would be opening the door to nickel and dime scammers.

I have provided signed addresses for both of the addresses that I used to donate. Can I get a refund please?

I'm on vacation and do not have access to this wallet.  I should be home in roughly 48 hours and will be able to fulfill your request.  A shame that these donations to the homeless are being taken back, but that is your choice.

MrDove has told me previously that they would have no problems issuing refunds if this project gets abandoned.  I last spoke with their drone operator yesterday (cool guy) who gave me an update.  I've seen videos of them testing the carry load and a crude dropping mechanism.  They aren't happy with the dropping mechanism in it's current form and that is what is holding back a demo video and another push for donations.  I'll urge them to speed up the process of a public demo video, even if the dropping mechanism sucks, to reassure folks that they are actually putting work into this.  The drone in the videos I saw was a DJI Phantom (not sure what model exactly) if that hasn't already been mentioned.

Is nastyfans now the only collective mining venture from the early days still in operation? With the almost certain implosion of asicminer  Sad it seems that none are left from glbse of any variety.

Kudos to Og for keeping it real.

Edit: ... and you too Nonnakip

As far as I know, we are the ONLY Bitcoin entity that has sent out BTC on a regular basis dating back to 2012.  We started distributing BTC in July of 2012 and the only competitor that even comes close is RSM who started distributing BTC roughly 15 months after us.

We are miles ahead in terms of operating length, reliability, growth of products & services, development, and transparency.  We are definitely surviving the test of time.
