Very nice gesture from the sender!

Happy Halloween all!
16362  Other / Politics & Society / Re: How Bitcoin will die on: October 31, 2014, 03:20:20 PM
The only way I can see BTC die is that computing power will become so big that you can do "vanity address" any BTC wallet (full address) you want in minutes.
People will see their wallets hacked and emptied.
Hackers will dump very fast all they can.

Still, the technology will remain, at least for historic reasons.

Monero Monday Missives

October 27th, 2014

Thank you very much.

I'm for making software where even the laziest user benefits. [...]

Therefore, it seems that there is still an important usage case for having the software make effortless the management of multiple Monero addresses (or accounts, if you prefer). While Monero seems to get rid of the need to generate and manage a new address for every single transaction, there is still a need to generate and manage new addresses for each privacy case where external cross-referencing might be plausible.

I don't doubt that there are smarter people who have already thought through all of this, but it does seem to be a usage case that hasn't been fully fleshed out from a practical standpoint in the software (and please correct me if I'm wrong). It seems to currently be a clumsy situation to manage multiple Monero accounts. Each requires its own instance of the wallet software to be running, and each requires its own backup mnemonic. All I'm interested in here is achieving the maximum security that we can in the least tedious way possible for users.

For the security issue, I'd say that even if he doesn't change the address, the lazy user has not much to lose. And creating a new wallet now and then is not a hard task.

But managing multiple wallets in one software is a good point and I wish to see the day we will have a wallet software that behaves (at least) like MultiBit or MultiDoge, with all wallets in one program.
(Maybe this goes also as an idea for the guys that worked/work on the current GUI wallets)

16364  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency (mandatory upgrade) on: October 30, 2014, 02:08:20 PM
personally, I think BTC x100 is less likely than XMR x100, but that is just me speculating off course Wink

Yep, that's a very good point. However, if BTC continues the current trend, XMR x100 will mean "only" 75x profit... :-/

On another note, did I miss a missive, or it didn't come at all? (Shouldn't they be every week?)
16365  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: About Bitcoin address on: October 30, 2014, 10:44:49 AM
It was indeed an originally Romanian post, it was also in the Romanian area.
He got some answers, I think / hope he is OK now.

I'd say that at least this English thread can be considered a closed subject.
16366  Local / Romānă (Romanian) / Re: Despre adresa Bitcoin on: October 30, 2014, 10:42:18 AM

16367  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: [DNC]DarkNetCoin- Translation and Pool Bounty! on: October 30, 2014, 10:25:20 AM
I can translate to Romanian. Please let me know if you need this and if I can consider the "spot" reserved.
Thanks.
16368  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: PrimeDice .05 Giveaway on: October 30, 2014, 09:51:01 AM
Rule:
- Must wagered atleast 1BTC to be able to claim the price

This is some kind of reverse giveaway. If somebody loses 1BTC, you get more than that by referral and you'll give back some pennies.
16369  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Price Is Not Rebounding,why? on: October 30, 2014, 08:27:27 AM
In the past bitcoin was the only way to hide your wealth. Quite a lot did that. Quite a lot thought that bitcoin is fully anonymous and used it for illegal stuff. And got burned.

Now there are a lot of altcoins for all that, some of them much closer to 100% anonymous. A lot of "bytes" where to spread the wealth. So yeah, there's not much demand for bitcoin, the price falls.

Still, bitcoin is far from dead. And I don't think it will die soon. All the altcoins are bought and sold through bitcoin. There are very very few of them you can trade directly for fiat and usually the additional fees are bigger.
16370  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: So ... Can Goverment stop Bitcoin ? on: October 30, 2014, 08:18:58 AM
Why everybody states that a 51% attack is unpractical/costly for a government?

They only need to seize ghash.io, or they could just point all universities data center to btc for a couple of hours...

Not so costly or unpractical, a single fighter jet cost considerably more.

There are not many governments with such economic power. US and ... that's all. Now, in US there's "democracy", so they need to cover such big action with quite a big legislation and ghash.io will have more than enough time to move or split (if it's not already split) between more locations / countries.

And without the power of ghash.io, only with universities and such, I think the 51% cannot happen. CPU and GPU mining goes nowhere, remember?
16371  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: So ... Can Goverment stop Bitcoin ? on: October 29, 2014, 08:05:28 PM
I have seen countless posts claiming that the government can/will ban bitcoin. What I have never seen is a post stating how it could be done. Until someone can demonstrate how it could be done I will continue to ignore those sophomoric musings.

Everybody complains that the adoption of crypto currencies is too small. Still, instead of taking the time to give info (and repeat, and repeat again...) to the newcomers, you guys are outraged by their questions.

The banks and the government have the media on their side. We need to be more opened and help eachother.... at least with info and patience...
16372  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: So ... Can Goverment stop Bitcoin ? on: October 29, 2014, 04:00:02 PM
I think that it's like with the torrent story.
Let's say a government bans BTC, as a network. And let's say that ISP will block, more or less some ports.

In bittorrent, there are clients that change the ports they work with (almost) absolutely random. Also they encrypt the transmission. I think that such behavior may be possible to add to bitcoin clients too.
But this is not even necessary, because bitcoin will exist in other countries. And you don't need the QT client for bitcoin. You can use multibit, you can use online wallets, there are plenty of choices.

To sum up this part: even if bitcoin is banned in a country, it will not die and people will actually be still able to use it in that country too.

Now, how some countries tried to ban bitcoin were:

* make the banks / exchanges not work with bitcoin in that country - that means that you may need to transfer your money to a friend abroad and ask him to buy BTC for you.
* punish you if they find out that you use bitcoin - may work for not really democratic countries and it's quite hard to find out unless you have a wallet on your phone or you are waving paper wallets to a cop that actually knows what's that Smiley

So.. it's not gonna happen.

I think that MagiCoin (XMG) may deserve a chance. They seem to be quite active and with good intentions.

16374  Economy / Gambling / Re: So... 20 min gambling... on: October 29, 2014, 11:21:41 AM
My advice is: stop for now. And withdraw at least half of that money.

If you want to play more, do that in a day or two, when you are not so happy anymore about your win.
Then, if you lose, there's a good chance you think twice when you have to deposit and ... play safer Wink

Good luck!
16375  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is it worth it? on: October 29, 2014, 11:17:49 AM
It's official: it's not worth it because the amount is very small, not paying even for your tiny time to load the page and fill the captcha and on long time it will make your address pay bigger transfer fees.

BUT it may worth it in certain cases:

- you spend that time on forums or gambling sites anyway
- you invest those pennies in something that grows fast (or it will worth it if BTC reaches 1000 times the current value)
- you are not too attached to your current BTC address and you will change it every couple of months.

So, um, yeah, it's debatable. The signature campaigns are clearly the way to go, but with only one account (cheating is found sooner or later, I think it doesn't worth it to try to multi-account) there's plenty of time for ... alternative means of getting some pennies if you have the time.

In my case, I get in one day, from a single faucet once per hour, more than I get from mining. I am stupid? Maybe. Or just maybe the term "worth it" is different from person to person and from case to case.
16376  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: What Is Happening To Primedice? on: October 28, 2014, 08:48:09 AM
Too many people abuse the faucets, so its still a good thing if faucets is removed..

I disagree. I believe that quite a lot of people can see how such a site works and decide if he likes it with the pennies from faucets. Some will stay, some will go.
The problem is the implementation of such a faucet. Because it's not OK to give 500 sat unlimited times and quite often. Maybe 500 sat / week (!) / IP,  with the timer reset after every deposit (?).
16377  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: October 28, 2014, 08:37:21 AM
Maybe a large buyer with insider info on the missive to come?
Oh boy, I hope this missive will contain visible things for the average holder. We really need those  Undecided

There is no significant update for long time. We need something tangible such as per kB based transaction fee. I wonder why it is so difficult to implement.

IIRC last week they said it's going into testing phase. I really hoped it will be released .. yesterday, but this time the Missive seems to be missing/late. I still think/hope to see per kB fee live this week.
16378  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: What Is Happening To Primedice? on: October 27, 2014, 04:48:01 PM
They also did not pay the fb giveaway.

In my case they paid the FB giveaway and didn't pay the bitcointalk giveaway. So, yeah..

Yes but many take advantage of the faucet.

They have multiple accounts and when they reach 50000 Sats they tip another account.

Alot of work but many make like $5/day with this method.

how many sats give a faucet per day?

A good faucet gives some 550 sat / hour, that's 13200 sat / day.
Primedice faucet gives indeed 500 sat, but only if the account is empty, so unless I missed something obvious they have to actually gamble to get the 5$.
16379  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: October 27, 2014, 04:24:20 PM
what goes up must come down

That applies to Bitcoin too, I hope that you are aware of that Cheesy

It would be hard not to be aware of that after the past 10 months.

Yes, and bitcoiners still dream of the "near future" when BTC will be back to 1000$ or, why not, 10000$, while calling all altcoins shitcoin.
Ohwell, maybe I am too thorny today...
16380  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: October 27, 2014, 04:06:45 PM
Why would a stolen coin dump scare you?

You are telling that this price / dump is caused Ryan Kennedy?!
Hmm.. maybe you are right. Actually, tbh, I can hope that's the reason. Because then this madness will end soon and everything will go back to normal.

There is no "normal" in this context. It's a fallacy of the mind.
I'm a monero supporter myself, but I have to acknowledge that usage of this kind of term is indicative of a strong bias.

You are right. Actually in a lot of cases there's no "normal" in life, but we tend to (over)use that. Bad habits Smiley.
And yeah, Monero is too young to actually know what will "normal" actually be in 2 years.
