1641  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Criticisms of the Lightning Network on: August 01, 2019, 05:24:53 PM
There is also another problem when dealing with the lightening networks confirmation. Basically it requires two people to open and close a channel. Opening and closing a channel usually takes around about 10 minutes like previously stated however if one side of the transaction doesn't agree to close the channel then the channel will remain open and this could take up to two weeks to be resolved.

The minimum_depth (a number of confirmations) is usually greater than 1, so it takes more than 10 minutes to fund a channel. The timelock is negotiated before funding a channel and it is usually 144 blocks (~1 day). For example, Eclair Mobile clients become an exception if the user enables payment receiving over the LN. In such case, the timelock is extented to 720 blocks (~5 days) for a local uncooperative close and to 2016 blocks (~2 weeks) for a remote one.

They are generally much lower than on chain Blockchain but if you are routing through others payment channels then they will probably request a cut of the transaction which some might not like. It works in the same way the current Blockchain works but instead miners are receiving the cut.

A 1/10 th satoshi fee sounds better to me than a 1000 satoshi one. Miners already receive a block reward while node operators don't get anything.
1642  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Live Problem on Windows on: August 01, 2019, 09:46:43 AM
Anyway, is that how they check the authenticity of the device as well? Connecting to their own server?

Yes, every Ledger device is given a secret key during manufacturing process. The key proves device's authenticity when connecting to Ledger's servers. If a device is not genuine then a warning is displayed. The same applies if the software was modified.
1643  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Live Problem on Windows on: August 01, 2019, 08:42:50 AM
I did, and I even deleted the whole folder. I didn't find any executable too.

That's weird. There should be at least the uninstaller. Check Windows Defender and your anti-virus software. The latter might be the case even if it doesn't prompt anything. You can also try re-downloading the installer from here.

Well, At least I know I'm safe with that. The only way they could access the wallet is to have the recovery seeds right? The phishing techniques that are in some threads here.

Yes, never enter your seed outside your hardware wallet. If you need to enter it in Electrum in case you lose the wallet, it would be wise to create a new wallet and transfer your funds there.
1644  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Live Problem on Windows on: August 01, 2019, 07:55:18 AM
Have you tried locating the Ledger Live folder in Program Files? You should be able to launch the program manually from there. Windows Search doesn't work well in some cases.

I'll probably not use that wallet, or I will reset the Ledger Nano S. Either way, I hope it's not critical.

There is no need to. Your private keys never leave the hardware wallet. The biggest advantage of hardware wallets is that you can use them even on infected computes. You are safe unless you approve some shady transaction manually.
1645  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network FAQ on: August 01, 2019, 07:36:30 AM
Overcharged its a good point, than you tried to take money back ON-CHAIN?

No, I was waiting for more of your questions. It turned out that the recommended transaction fee spiked to about 25 sat/byte a moment before I opened a channel. I paid 32 sat/byte fee so not that bad, but I am disappointed that I was not able to set it myself.

Can you print a picture of your channel about:

CAPACITY (mine 3,74€)
CAN SEND (mine 2,57€)
CAN RECEIVE (mine 0€)

Its not supposed to can send and receive the total capacity?
They say its not, so, you imagine one service you put 50€, but you can only send 30€ and can only receive 10€ ?

No, that's not how Lightning Network works. Take a look at 'Receiving Lightning funds' on this website. You can't send all of your funds because of the channel reserve which acts as an insurance if one party attempts to cheat.

Can you send me your request of 1 Satoshi or your "CAN RECEIVE" its zero too?

As you can see on the image, it's not zero because I have sent a few Lightning Network payments. However, mobile wallets are not online all the time. This means that they can't receive payments without the app being opened.
1646  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S, How Many Wallets Can I Install At Once and Compatibility? on: July 31, 2019, 09:15:02 PM
It would be nice if the device had more space on it to have room for more apps, but I'm aware that this isn't necessary in order to store whatever coins you own.  Had I done more research before buying, I probably would have chosen the Ledger Nano X, but I'm still happy with the S model.

The Nano S used to fit more apps in the past but due to the latest update, the capacity decreased significantly. Ledger claims that it was an accident and it should be fixed in the next update as promised while others think that it is a planned obsolescence. Why did you choose Ledger instead of Trezor? If you don't want to derail the thread then it would be great if you could message me.

1648  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network FAQ on: July 31, 2019, 05:19:32 PM
Can you please install this APP: https://blog.lightning.engineering/announcement/2019/06/19/mobile-app.html

Put $10 and try it with me doing some transactions to each other?

I managed to open a channel and send a few transactions over the Lightning Network without any major problems. However, I would not recommend this wallet to anyone in its current state. I could not set the channel opening fee and I was a bit overcharged. The same thing will happen once I decide to close that channel. I was not able to paste a payment request; I had to scan a QR code manually. There are no backups. If your phone breaks then you will have to rely on the other party to recover your coins. If you set the Bitcoin unit to Bitcoin instead of satoshi then the balance does not fit the screen unless you switch to fiat view. Also, entering the PIN is a bit inconvenient. The PIN pad should be moved up a little.

TL;DR Eclair Mobile is the best choice for now if you don't want to use a custodial wallet.
1649  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Lost my BitcoinCash on: July 31, 2019, 02:51:26 PM
Foolishly bought BitcoinCash and sent them to the purse GreenWallet. The stupidity is that this wallet "sees" only bitcoins. I wrote to support to get a private key, but all to no avail. Is there any way to restore bitcoin Cash on Electrum?

Weren't you given a mnemonic passphrase during wallet creation? If so, you should be able to import it in Electrum Cash and spend those coins without any problems. Which version of their wallet did you use to create the wallet? The desktop or the mobile app?
1650  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network FAQ on: July 31, 2019, 08:41:50 AM
To control spamming attacks we have the fee, miners would love spammers, they will not love LN when the rewards end.

I guess that someone will come up with a better scaling solution by 2140. The Lightning Network channels still need to broadcast transactions when closing and opening channels. Would you pay a 1000 satoshi fee for sending 1 satoshi on-chain (assuming it was not treated as dust)?

Put $10 and try it with me doing some transactions to each other?

I have a few channels on my LND node and Eclair Mobile. If that's okay with you then send me a payment request here. Note that you need to have incoming capacity.

Edit: Ah, you want me to see if I am going to encounter the same problem as yours. Sure, will post results later.
1651  Other / Meta / Re: Stake your Bitcoin address here on: July 31, 2019, 08:02:46 AM
If an attacker uses your compromised address to scam an user on social networks, by email or even here by PM, he just need to send the link of your old post to mislead the user...  Undecided There are little odds the user will find or even seek your revoking post.
So I think it would be more safe to edit your old post and to put a link to your revoking post there.

Thank you for your suggestion; I'll edit that post in a moment. However, this address is very unlike to be compromised. I have destroyed all physical copies of the seed which was never entered outside any hardware wallet. Also, I have never written down my passphrase.
1652  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Criticisms of the Lightning Network on: July 31, 2019, 07:14:53 AM
Regarding criticisms, the need to keep private keys online and regularly monitor channels limits the appeal.

Mobile wallets are a small exception here. Once you enable payment receiving in Eclar Mobile, the timelock for new channels changes and you have to appear online once every two weeks. It's not bad when you compare it to 144 blocks (~1 day) default value.
1653  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network FAQ on: July 30, 2019, 08:47:32 PM
you've been lucky, LND is not the most reliable Lightning software available, and it also causes compatibility problems with other Lightning implementations (which wastes the time of devs who must mitigate for LND's problems). Lightning Labs devs admit to this, yet continue to develop new features instead of focusing on fixing old bugs.

Do you have any articles or messages related to it? I am working on a thread about implementations and wallets, and this piece of information could be really important for people who are thinking which one they should choose.
1654  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Criticisms of the Lightning Network on: July 30, 2019, 11:45:53 AM
The fees to topen/close channels were higher than I expected, and they were also not transparent.
I set a low fee (like 3 sat byte) but later on when closing the channel I was charged high fees, and I don't know where they came from. I couldn't set them also.

It's Eclair's fault. I am not sure about c-lightning, but LND allows users to set the closing transaction fee through --sat_per_byte parameter. Even if the implementation supports a certain feature, clients also have to implement it. What was the recommended transaction fee at the time? @LoyceV pointed out that Eclair Mobile overcharges for the closing transaction depending on the mempool state.
1655  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Updating from Electrum 3.3.6 to 3.3.8 on: July 30, 2019, 10:52:31 AM
I dont remember If I downloaded the Standalone Executable or the Windows Installer when I installed the 3.3.6 version. Does it matter and can I download either one to perform the update?

The difference between these two is that the standalone excecutable does not create any files inside Program Files, but it loads and saves wallet data to Electrum folder located in %appdata% just like the installed version. Take a closer look at the Electrum icon. Is it a shortcut to Electrum folder in Program Files? If so, download the installer.
1656  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Raspberry Pi 4 performance on: July 30, 2019, 10:26:22 AM
NAND cell tech - SLC is best, MLC 2nd, TLC 3rd and QLC 4th in reliability/longevity. Pricing corresponds; SLC based SSD devices are expensive, QLC cheap

SLC SSDs are mostly used for server applications and they are going to be harder to obtain for an average consumer. MLC drives are still widely available. QLC drives seem to be priced about the same as TLC ones (at least in my country) while being less durable.

there was another factor also, but I've forgotten it for now

Wasn't it Total Bytes Written (TBW) by any chance? If TBW is exceeded then the warranty is void, but the drive still can work for a decent amount of time. Also, the controller is a very important factor. If it breaks then all of the data becomes unrecoverable in most cases.
1657  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Hardware wallets still aren't secure, and they never will be. Use paper wallets on: July 30, 2019, 09:01:23 AM
Hardware wallets wipe themself after 3 attempts? That isn't a security feature at all. What if an attacker fails 3 times is your Bitcoin then wiped?

It varies a lot between hardware wallets. Ledger wipes itself after 3 attempts while Trezor enforces a delay before you can enter the PIN again. The delay constantly increases until 16th attempt. The device is wiped after 16 unsuccessful unlock attempts. As for the KeepKey, it doesn't wipe itself. It also introduces a growing delay after the third failed attempt. If a hardware wallet is wiped then a recovery seed is needed to restore the wallet.

Do you have any more information regarding the URL ?

Yes, it was a hyperlink. This user clicked on https://www.ledger.com/helpdesk/bip39tool/ but in fact he accessed a different website. If he had copied the address manually or moved his mouse cursor over the link, he would have noticed that something was wrong. The user did not check the address bar immediately after accessing the website.

1660  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: bitcoin core qt only use 1 core on cpu on: July 29, 2019, 09:35:12 PM
and other clue is the cpu 1 core is 100%  the other just idle and don'st matter what it keep like that
hdd goes 100% usage in first minute and drop to 75% later   dgb wallet use also 12% cpu (1 fullcore) using 2.5gb of memory

There seems to be a problem with this CPU in particular. I found an old thread in which OP stated that he had the same CPU as you and experienced some performance issues. What motherboard do you have? Can you check if you have the latest version of BIOS? There might be something wrong with your BIOS settings.
