16481  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Transaction cost possible fix on: December 24, 2017, 03:50:46 PM
It's not a possible fix to the question of how to securely send payment from peer to peer over a trustless network. What you're effectively suggesting is that people share access - and you must know that security of your Bitcoin begins first with ensuring that the owner is the only one with control i.e., the only one in possession of the private key.

How do you also exchange wallets of specific amounts? Keep a set of wallets in small denominations? You'd still have to create transactions to split your coins up like that. And, once more than one person has the private key, outside of multi-sig, there's no way to prevent any of the owners from spending those Bitcoins. Sweeping also requires transacting.

Can't be avoided, OP.
16482  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Transaction Unconfirmed for week + on: December 24, 2017, 03:13:41 PM
You're wrong. Your fee is definitely the problem here. Click the link you shared, the tx shows a fee of just over 45 sats/byte, which is far too low to hope miners will pick it up for confirmation. Fees are usually the problem when unconfirmed transactions that stay unconfirmed for so long.

Hopefully, you already know how to use estimators like https://bitcoinfees.earn.com/ to set an appropriate fee for transactions. The good news... and I hope I am right, the congestion has been easing off in the past 4 days, mempool finally clearing off 100k txs and still going down. According to current estimates, should conditions continue in this pattern, you have a 90% chance of confirmation within the next 19 hours.

16483  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Help BTC Balance zero but still in chain, I have no idea on: December 24, 2017, 03:03:07 PM
A few discrepancies. Are you sure you sent out funds from your wallet? Because the transaction shows a timestamp of 13th December - 11 days ago, and not 4 days ago as you say. Also if your wallet address is 3AzWaxhLJBdxPx7NakZ8F9XbmP2FoGg6n3, then blockchain doesn't show any outgoing transactions, rather the address has an incoming transaction, as shown by CyberKuro. As it's unconfirmed, your wallet should show zero (with 0.20762112 BTC unconfirmed).

You cannot revert the tx, Bitcoin txs cannot be reversed. Acceleration is next to hopeless since mempool is still so high and your tx fee is extremely low, virtually 0 sats/byte. You can still try at your own risk looking here for people offering acceleration services: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=52.0

You can see options like CPFP or RBPF from this sticky: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1802212.0 but you can only do them if in fact you were the sender of said tx.

If you're the receiver, then you have to convince the sender to try above methods. Otherwise your only hope is to wait it out. Either it confirms when mempool is low enough - I'd say at least two weeks, or the tx is simply dropped from the mempool. Seems this is about to happen, since it already shows as expired from one block explorer (Cyber's post).
16484  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Merry Christmas with Bitcoin. on: December 24, 2017, 02:16:59 PM
Something must be coming over me, as I actually felt a smile coming on with that greeting. So yes, season's greetings to all of you Bitcoiners, young and old, cheerful and scowling, seller and buyer, holder and investor, user and abuser. We're all part of the story of Bitcoin's claim to fame this year, like it or not. Hopefully, some of us made use of the ATHs, and some of us are taking these current dips in stride to add more to our stockings. Try and get a break, don't forget about the real priorities in life - Bitcoin will still be here to torment you when you return in a week's time.

P.S. My Christmas gift is a mempool that's finally letting down from 200k. For the moment, 400 sats/byte is no longer a poor man's fee. Hope I haven't jinxed it by mentioning it though, haha.
16485  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin will rise during the Christmas holidays on: December 24, 2017, 12:00:43 PM
A lot of people are actually saying the exact opposite actually, as they think that during this time people are going to be cashing out as they want to be able to buy gifts for people in their lives -- but no one is to really know what people are going to do. It's not like any real research is being done on people, we're all just sitting here speculating.

I hope it does rise though, I've got a pretty high stake at the moment! HODL

The only pattern I can see from past Christmas seems to suggest the same, a slight petering and consolidation of prices, before a slight dip in January - in the same months alts (even Dogecoin) make a strong run. I doubt holiday season has much to do with anything. Christmas shopping would have been done a week ago, so maybe that explains part of the sell off, though I hardly think the big whales really need to liquidate Bitcoin for a few Christmas gifts!

And yeah, there's no real research on that, so we end up speculating every Christmas but I'd wager that seasonal holidays, just like weekends, have limited impact on Bitcoin market, not to the level of conventional trading anyway. I still suspect the January dip, along with fresh alts impetus, will happen. Not even 10 years of history to prove a pattern but perhaps 6 out of 7 years is enough.
16486  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Premier League Prediction Thread (EPL) on: December 24, 2017, 08:30:30 AM
I think is fair to say that Manchester United will no longer fight for the league title. Mathematically, they still have a chance since we're just in the middle of the season, but they are now 13 points behind The Citizens, and I don't see Manchester City losing 4 games, and Manchester United winning all of their matches.
The next couple of weeks are going to be intense, though. All the teams will be playing every 3 days so, squad depth is going to play a big role.

No, that's not fair to say at all. I don't see Manchester City losing 4 games either, but all it might take is a couple of consecutive draws, on the back of or immediately preceding a meeting against another of the top 4 (Liverpool I'd say represents the best chance of beating them at the moment) and then suddenly that's 7 points or half of the lead gone. History has enough of these repeats, and I still say that we have to wait til January. If they lead by more than 10 points then, then yes, it'll probably be too late.

I do agree that I can't see any of the other teams winning the rest of the season... which is what it'd take to pip City. But you never know with teams like Liverpool.

Oh and damn Harry Kane, his hattrick took him level with Salah on topscorer.
16487  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2017-12-22] Coinbase, Insider Trading, and Scandal Surrounding Bitcoin Cash on: December 23, 2017, 07:59:34 PM
The CEO and Coinbase should have known full well this would happen. If you make a sudden decision, well in advance of the supposed date, and not make it transparent, then you fully expect this to happen. You think the investigation will turn up the real culprits? Are they really going to fire the people responsible? And if fired, they'll have made their money already.

The whole thing reeks of bad news, but I don't think anyone who's familiar with the crypto in question will be raising eyebrows. What I'd really like to see is CNBC's involvement brought to light.
16488  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: La Liga (Spanish League) Prediction Thread 2016/17 on: December 23, 2017, 04:00:09 PM
The win was probably slightly expected, the scoreline perhaps not. Unlike teams like Liverpool *cough* once Barca are up by two goals, they're not throwing the game away, even not to Real. The red card probably put Real to the sword, Suarez was always going to score the way the defence played today, starting with horrible back passes to keeper in the first half.

So Barca are the City of La Liga, unbeaten, but I disagree the league's done. We know how vulnerable Barca can be without their stars up front so an injury or dip in form to Suarez or Messi could be the chance for Real to gain ground. It's an impossible task for Athletico or even Valencia to try and pip them to the championship, but you never know with football - and remember, there's still two games to go til the midway point. 6 points dropped or even 4 can shift that table radically.
16489  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Danish League player to be paid entirely in Bitcoin on: December 23, 2017, 01:30:01 PM
Man, I wish I would get a nice contract that pays me in Bitcoin. I'd just play out the rest of my career, earning my salary and hoarding it as Bitcoin, while living off money from sponsorships and bonuses. Sportspeople these days "retire" by their mid-30s, so Rosenthal's got about 7 years to build up his personal wealth. And who knows what Bitcoin would be worth in 7 years?

That's now three football players of some renown I have heard of getting involved with Bitcoin/crypto. We've got ex-Everton Joleon Lescott doing a blockchain charity project, Leo Messi being the face of the new blockchain phone and now Rosenthal earning in Bitcoin. We all know who's probably going to end up being the wealthiest Wink

Even though some people support paying with bitcoin, bitcoin payments are still a hot spot, and overhandling is still a problem.

Not sure what you mean by this. Players in modern European football get their wages paid weekly, and I highly doubt he'll mind paying 900 sats/byte to get his payments confirmed. Hell, maybe even skimp on fees and wait months for them to confirm, not like he'll need them urgently.
16490  Economy / Speculation / Re: 45% drop - this is new territory, never seen before on: December 23, 2017, 11:03:02 AM
There has never been a drop like this in such short time in the full history of Bitcoin.

Ever.

2013 - 1200USD, there hasn't been a rise like this, ever!
2014 - Gox dead, there hasn't been a scam like this, ever!
2014 - we're at 100 USD there hasn't been a drop like this, ever!
2017 - June $3000, there's never been a rise like this, ever, it's a bubble!
2017 - September $5000 it's a bubble, it's going to correct!
2017 - November $7000 all newbies start to go in. Money money! We'll be millionaires! $_$
2017 - December $13000 "my friend bought w weeks ago and now he's $6000 richer, quick woman, pack your shit we're selling the house!"

I will never put my money in bitcoin, EVER. Bitcoin stinks!  Wink

Indeed, you just have to go digging into the old threads and even old media reports (I say old but they're really just less than five years ago!) to see all the same emotions played out over the years. From disbelief and unbridled joy when Bitcoin went from $5 to $50 (I think that was the first mention of a bubble) crushed spirits when almost overnight China real news brought Bitcoin from a mighty high of past $1200 to humbling hundreds.

When I properly entered last year, people were generally upbeat about Bitcoin, just patiently waiting for it to build back up to $1k again. Of course, Ethereum and other alts were the ones making news, with DAO and Monero/dark market chatter dominating. Not a single person I'd met believed a recovery was ever on the cards so soon.

Recovery? Crash? It's a rollercoaster, it'll always be one. Let's try and remember to enjoy the ride.
16491  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Where is the crypto-anarchy spirit?? on: December 23, 2017, 09:33:50 AM
Exactly how does BCH conserve the crypto anarchist spirit? People use it for profits all the same. It's accepted in even less places, and there are very few transactions compared to Bitcoin. One could argue that that means more people are aggressively HODLing.

In fact, go visit r/btc, which is pro Bitcoin Cash. All you'll see is them shit talking Bitcoin, the Bitcoin community, or HODLing. Bitcoin may have lost the crypto anarchy spirit, but Bitcoin Cash isn't at all better.

Exactly! I'm all for the preservation of crypto-anarchy (not that it would welcome any effort to preserve it) and still think guys like Amir Taaki do a lot to keep crypto and Bitcoin firmly on that long-term vision. But if this guy who claims to have been in Bitcoin for so many years thinks that Bitcoin Cash has even a shade of the "original" principles, then I must have really been missing the point .

Bitcoin Cash proponents have long been saying Bitcoin core held back the price (Roger Ver said Bitcoin should have been 10k if core were more amenable, then of course Bitcoin got to that stage). Look at the accusations of insider trading re Coinbase, Ver, etc. There is no crypto with more suits, ties and backroom meetings than Bitcoin Cash. If those are crypto anarchists, then I need a re-education.

16493  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Premier League Prediction Thread (EPL) on: December 22, 2017, 09:55:16 PM
Well all the smart bets were on both teams scoring and above 2.5, as usual I seem to lose by betting on Liverpool. That's three consecutive draws in the premier league, I can just feel the confidence sapping from the attackers each time we concede. Three goals from the first three shots on target. A really poor save from Mignolet on the second goal. Great 1 on 1 keeper but pretty shit at positioning, and apparently a lousy palmer of shots from distance.

I suppose the point is deserved from both teams, but really we're going to waste all our steam to fight for these type of draws. A great game all around, of course, enjoyed almost every minute of it. Goals weren't that special, plenty of deflections and defending errors. And only 1 yellow card, what an exhibition! So the Manchester teams pull farther away from the pack. Damn, I love football.
16494  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2017-12-22] Doing a 180 – Goldman Sachs Goes Crypto on: December 22, 2017, 05:39:52 PM
The last time someone with the initials JD went all in on crushing crypto, the market (causally or otherwise) dipped, and then went right back up again, providing almost 50% profits to anyone who sold at the announcement, bought back in at the floor, and sold again at its rise - all in one week. I can only imagine how much money stands to be made from anyone who sold Bitcoin a week ago and is preparing to buy back almost 0.4 times more Bitcoin right at this moment.

If I were a conspiracy theorist, I'd say that this Bitcoin flooring to 10k - not to mention all the other alts' drastic dive - is merely prepping up for the big boys to come and play. Forget cash-settled futures, we're going to see serious players come and join us on exchanges, selling, buying, perhaps even challenging the current whales of crypto. Mainstream of the mainstream indeed!
16495  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Bitcointalk English Premier League pool betting Discussion Thread on: December 22, 2017, 02:55:13 PM
Maybe it can be another sidebet on who will be the first person to get four correct scores. I think it will be very difficult to get five nevermind six, and the odds of getting five exact scores must be astronomical (though not impossible because sometimes people get six on Skybet's SuperSix, but I think it's very rare). I'm happy with one or two a week to be honest, but getting a few right each round over Christmas/New Year will do nicely as I'd like to have a little wiggle room at the top if I get there just to cover any bad rounds I may have haha (which is inevitable).

Oh I'm on for that - I know I'll be backing ajaxmoor (just please don't forget to put predictions again!) to get 4 correct first. I've only ever got two correct I think, many close shaves but a loss is a loss.

Anyway, tonight is the Arsenal Liverpool upper mid table rivalry haha. I'm backing Liverpool at - you guessed it - a 3 nil win. Unlikely to happen again, but it's going to be hard to predict the exact scoreline anyway. What's almost for certain is there shouldn't be a scoreless draw on the cards. Lots of high-scoring predictions I can see from other tipsters. I also set the rest of this week's games for three draws. Counting on teams to drop points, maybe a risky bet against the Manchester teams.

P.S. @hilarious, we're probably going to end up paying fees worth the entry stake for V2.0, not sure if all participants will be prepared. I made a mistake of sending a priority tx yesterday using one of my online wallets. Highest possible fee still got me stuck way below the median fee.
16496  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why are people freaking out? on: December 22, 2017, 12:51:45 PM
Well, we don't blame people why they are freaking out. After the fast growth, bitcoin price already dropping. How come bitcoin correction is possible? It is always happening but it will still rise after all. How about the people who invested in a huge amount? For sure they've already lose money now. A lot of people are selling their bitcoin because maybe Christmas is near. I also wanted to sell but I am thinking the future, that bitcoin price will still recover for the last ATH's.

As OP says, there are a lot of newcomers, just imagine, if anyone had entered into Bitcoin since Q3 this year, they'd have seen nothing but an appreciation of value in Bitcoin. What's more, they'd have seen most of the top alts reach, break and keep making new all time highs. They've seen Litecoin boom, they've seen ETH threaten 1k, they've seen Dash do it, Monero and ZCash going into the hundreds. They saw daily dips, but they were not prepared for this.

Those who have been around when BTC crashed more than 50% and took years to recover back to 1k will remember, even I who wasn't around will be expecting this.

More pertinent, even these seasoned traders will feel the bite. Perhaps crashing from $1400 to $500 is worse in terms of percentage, but that's less than a thousand dollar drop. The psychological effect of seeing $7k wiped out in a week, now that's bound to fray a lot of nerves.
16497  Economy / Speculation / Re: Reason behind Bitcoin Dip (Crash) on: December 22, 2017, 10:25:59 AM
I would like to understand the main reason behind the bitcoin dip/crash (whatever it may be). Currently BTC is trading at 12.5K on preev.com, and I am beginning to become scared as to what the near future may hold for bitcoin.

Is this a Bitcoin crash? Or is it a crypto crash too? Is it just the holiday season or something else? We can also see on coinmarketcap.com that in essence, almost ALL alt-coins are also down by a similar amount in %.

Hold or sell, what do you think?

PS: Please don't just spam this thread with:"Sell now, it will crash" or "Don't worry, it will go up". Base your points on facts that drive the discussion forward, not just general terms that have been already written down many times before.

A lot of good points, but this climate of extreme volatility by which Bitcoin has a reputation for means that half of the analyses will be right half of the time, and half of us will be right half of the time, depending on when we predict and analyse. It's almost like gambling, with the certainty of winning streaks equal to that of losing streaks.

But to add my own thoughts: this month saw the launch of almost unknown Bitcoin forks. To my knowledge, at least six Bitcoin forks happened in the past three weeks, or at least were trading as futures on a small exchange based in Russia (check out Yobit twitter to see). Now I know the community in general is tired with these forks, but perhaps the lure of instant money was too much for newcomers who missed out on BCH and BTG? Was the buying frenzy partially generated by people wishing to claim these fork coins? And the current dip partially owing to people who've already claimed and now don't need the Bitcoin?

The total price of these six forks on yobit trading is almost 3% of Bitcoin price. Not a lot perhaps, but a good block of instant "free money" for speculators.
16498  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Y'all are traitors, thinking of BTC value as related to USD on: December 22, 2017, 09:40:32 AM
When I think of one Bitcoin... that is ALL I think about!
To think any further is traitorous.
i.e. Bob says " well, if Bitcoin hits $10,000 US, I'm gonna sell some and buy a new car "

It's unacceptable to think in terms of fiat.
Show some loyalty, and when you talk about Bitcoin, that should be it.

example. Bill says " I have 2 Bitcoins. Gonna buy some burgers now. "

Come on, now. Only the earliest adopters can ever have claimed to think of it that way. And when people first started putting a value to it, of course they assigned a fiat value. You want to say burgers, pizza? The very first dollar value was assigned based on the electricity cost to generate it, and perhaps this is one of the underlying factors that continues to determine prices, at least when miners generate new coins and put it on the market.

Of course I agree that mere price speculation is harmful to Bitcoin, but I would suppose we can't live without the market. It is perfectly acceptable to think in terms of fiat - for now. Perhaps one day people will think of fiat in terms of Bitcoin, but that day is far away and needs maturity.

P.S. If Bob wants some burgers for a couple of Bitcoins, hit me up. I'll throw in some drinks too. A week's supply since I'm generous.
16499  Economy / Speculation / Re: The Dip: The Christmas Gift? on: December 22, 2017, 08:11:13 AM
Yeah, people like me will be slightly happier for this correction, long awaited and long delayed. Definitely had a good run and honestly not out of sync with the rise and decline patterns we've been accustomed to over the past year. Is this a good place to buy more Bitcoin? For sure, and to return alts to better levels against Bitcoin, I might add. I may even be hoping for below 10k if it it will mean a healthy surge back to $15k and a stabilisation attempt there. Christmas gift indeed, if anyone here is looking for a payout in crypto.

Overall, my holdings have slipped 30% from just a few days ago, so diversification hasn't really changed the broad pattern of losses, but like most holders, this is but a blip we're happy to have now rather than later. Well, if is goes down a further 20-25% in this final week of December, I'll be an expert for having predicted a max level of $10k by the end of 2017 Wink
16500  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: How many Bitcoins would it take for you to Quit Gambling Forever? on: December 22, 2017, 06:21:03 AM
I think that I would not have too much fun gambling if I owned more than, say, 1 million euros.
Gambling seems rather pointless if you have that much money and I'm not really looking to become a high roller, gambling with a few thousand euros per bet or anything like that.

If we're talking about BTC exclusively, I think around 20 BTC should be enough Wink

Yeah, I would imagine it would take a lot of wealth for me to pick up new hobbies, that would probably mean I have no more time to gamble. If I had a million euros, though, the immediate use would be for two homes, one for myself and another for my family. Nice ones without being immodest, I'd say about 300k would be gone to that (including a maintenance fund for the next 25 years). Then to enjoy the world and all that I'd probably use that all up in the next five years, or choose to use it for the rest of my life, in which case I wouldn't have new expensive hobbies and still want to gamble.

But if some guy came up to me and asked this, I'd ask for 100 BTC. I'd probably end up taking even 5 BTC, to be honest. Any less and I'd be hesitant. I'm learning to gamble responsibly as I age, I do enjoy sportsbetting especially and who the hell doesn't look forward to poker night with friends, right?
