1661  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Shorter privatekey on: August 23, 2022, 03:04:33 AM
I would just make room be able to write a WIF privKey, but if you really have to use a shorter format, you can use a "mini private key".
If you're using Windows, casascius had a compiled binary of his "Bitcoin-Address-Utility" repository on his website but was later removed.

You can still access it though through archive.org's server: web.archive.org/web/20210801000000*/http://casascius.com/btcaddress-alpha.zip
To get the file: Select a year (pref 2021), point to a highlighted date (April 16) and click the time of the snapshot.
That will lead you to the archived url which is the copy of the old download link.

After downloading "btcaddress-alpha.zip", extract it.
Run "BtcAddress.exe", create a Minikey in "Tools->Address Utility".

Note: Mini Private keys aren't compatible with some wallets. AFAIK, Electrum supports it.

For Linux, compile it yourself.
1662  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Wladimir J. van der Laan's signature is expired in KLEOPATRA (Gpg4win-4.0.2) on: August 23, 2022, 02:23:04 AM
-snip-
Probably not. AV is Windows Security. It is not deleting gpg.exe file. It is deleting its content. The file is there but with not content. Dir command showsd a 0 KB file. Can an AV erased the content of the file without erasing the file itself? Maybe it can... I have no idea.
It can. GPG4Win's installation directory contents wont delete itself.
If it found that the file contains a similar malicious fingerprint, it will quarantine it and will try to "fix" the file (that may be the cause of the '0kB' file).
1663  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Expiration adress on: August 22, 2022, 02:26:48 PM
Ok thank you, just to be sure you know !
Pro tip: Electrum usually has a "tooltip" on its features which provide sufficient explanations about that feature.
So if you ever need to be sure about a feature in the near future, try to find a "?" in that particular window/tab.

For example, the "Expires after (?)" is a tooltip itself (expressed with '?') and it's clickable;
when clicked, this tooltip will be displayed:

I have uninstalled GPG4WIN and installed again and now, yes, I can see Wladimir J. van der Laan key. This means that every time I run the command:
-snip-
I must uninstall GPG4WIN and install it again right after importing any signature key.
This doesn't look like an issue with Bitcoin Core nor GPG4Win at all.
I suspect that it's either a hardware issue (HDD, RAM or CPU) or your Antivirus Software deleting the files.

Usually, you just have to do the installation of required software (GPG4Win), importation of keys and certifying them if you want to, only once.
The only recurring part is the actual verification (verify the SHA256sums file and get the binary's SHA2556 hash) everytime you need to verify Bitcoin Core (e.g.: new release).
1665  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin core create a watch only wallet and sign transactions offline [Tutorial] on: August 21, 2022, 04:20:50 AM
Isn't this much easier without using a Descriptor Wallet? You can just create a new wallet and untick it.
The difference with importaddress is, this method can create an HD watching-only wallet.
AFAIK, there's no other method to create an HD watching-only wallet in Core without using parent descriptors.
1666  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to recover compromised account? on: August 20, 2022, 04:29:55 AM
Who do I contact in regards to recovering a compromised account? This compromise lead to the theft of $11,500 in btc, and I need access back to further investigate.
Wait, are we talking about compromised Bitcointalk account here or a Bitcoin wallet?

Because for the latter: it's unrecoverable; or it's up to the service provider if you mean an Exchange/custodial wallet.
For the former: it's what they've said.
1667  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin core create a watch only wallet and sign transactions offline [Tutorial] on: August 20, 2022, 03:18:44 AM
Will Bitcoin Core only show balances for UTXOs created after you`importdescriptors`? Or am I screwing this up somehow?
This will depend on the value of "timestamp" in 'importdescriptors'.
In the example in the OP, he used "1647182091" which is the epoch date of "Sunday, March 13, 2022" so Bitcoin Core will only rescan blocks past that time.
If you want to rescan from the genesis block, set it to "0"; if you do not wish to rescan, set it to "now".
1668  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Can I pay one of you experts to help me retrieve my armory wallet? on: August 19, 2022, 04:32:00 AM
Should I use bitcoin core 22 or 23?
The latest 23.0 should do,
but make sure to uncheck "prune block storage" during Bitcoin Core's initial setup since it's ticked by default and Armory wont work with it enabled.

And make sure Armory is in the latest version v0.96.5 as well.
1669  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum 4.3.1 Relased on: August 19, 2022, 04:24:04 AM
-snip-
Looks like a minor release mostly dealing with python updates and some legacy LN support.
IMO, it's more of a "hot fix" due to those regressions caused by v4.3.0 update, that's why they've released it ASAP.
Some of them are kind of major bugs that caused crashes.

Like in my instruction, setting it to Kleopatra will only change the server of its "Lookup on server..." tool (I guess it's the language barrier's fault).
For commands, you should indicate the server after "--keyserver".

So the command should be:
Code:
gpg.exe --keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 71A3B16735405025D447E8F274810B012346C9A6
1671  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why all the Bitcoin has to be in the Blockchain ? on: August 18, 2022, 03:03:10 PM
Who is really Satoshi Nakamoto ? Is that Californian Japanese man -snip-
The "Californian Japanese man"? Do you mean Dorian Nakamoto, the one on the famous picture of Satoshi as a Japanese guy in glasses?
If yes, he already claimed that he's not Satoshi years ago; satoshi still remains anonymous.
1672  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitnodes cannot find my Bitcoin node on: August 18, 2022, 02:42:34 PM
If I check in muy Bitcoin Core node window, in Information, in Network, I see 10 incoming pears connected, and cero outbound peers.
-snip-
I have also tried all Network configurations in my Bitcoin Core and it does not work (Map port using UPnP, Map port using NAT-PMP, Allow incoming connections, connect through SOCKS5 PROXY (default proxy) 127.0.0.1:9150, and so on). I have disconnected Windows Firewall and still does not work.
With UPnP enabled in both router and Bitcoin Core's network setting, it should be able to map the port if the ISP allows it;
but since it didn't worked, it must the ISP's fault.

Anyways, how did you test it? Have you enabled all those settings at once?
Because it wont work if all mentioned settings are ticked all at the same time without the required services.
If so, only leave "Map port using UPnP" and "Allow incoming connections" checked, close Bitcoin Core, then enable UPnP in your router and restart it.

For the "peers", I think you got 10 outbound connections instead of inbound.
1673  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Failed to create BlockDataMap on: August 17, 2022, 07:19:11 AM
So, I verified that setting the Bitcoin CORE directory in Armory Preferences appears to work as the output from the ArmorySetting.txt file has the change and has a recent timestamp.

billds-iMac:Armory billd$ cat ArmorySettings.txt
ManageSatoshi                        | False
With this setting, you need to manually launch Bitcoin Core before Armory.
But if it's set to "True", Armory will try to find and launch bitcoind in the background.
1674  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum 4.3.0 Relased on: August 17, 2022, 06:00:46 AM
Can anybody else confirm this?
Yes, it only appears in the sender's history if the URI is copied.
The good news is: they already patched it right after this issue was posted (by AbdussamadA): https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/issues/7919
1675  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Wladimir J. van der Laan's signature is expired in KLEOPATRA (Gpg4win-4.0.2) on: August 17, 2022, 05:52:08 AM
"nc50lc": I have tried hkps://keyserver.ubuntu.com that is the default server in Kleopatra and still, it does not import keys.
You should use "hkp://" not "hkps://" like in my example, otherwise it'll not work in Kleopatra.
Also, setting it in Kleoparta isn't necessary if you'll use the command line, but go on if you're going to use Kleopatra's "Lookup on Server..." menu.
1676  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Lost Bitcoins on: August 17, 2022, 05:34:51 AM
No, I do have a level of understanding on how btc works and how a hash is created. Am I new to all this? Yes I am.
-snip- If I am correct the errant transaction can still be found on the blockchain as all transactions are stored forever. All transaction ever made can still be seen! New information is constantly being added to the blockchain. New information can be added pertaining to addresses that sent btc to nowhere and was lost. People put information in blocks that have nothing to do with value being transfered.
Being able to see all the transactions doesn't mean that the developers can spend them, it's still bound to the reasons that I've previously mentioned.

I'd suggest this resource for you to know more about Bitcoin: https://learnmeabitcoin.com/technical/
Since you already got the gist, you can go straight to the technical articles.

Any and all bitcoins that have been lost are still associated with an address.
There are no addresses in the blockchain, coins are locked with scripts which are just derived in your wallet as addresses for the sake of convenience;
in fact, most of the old "lost coins" are locked with P2PK scripts that shouldn't even be derived into addresses (but some blockexplorers link them to addresses anyways which is incorrect)

Think tank, bouncing around an idea. I'm just saying...
Okay, but it needs further elaboration and FYI, not every reply that opposes your idea is negative or trolling: it's a healthy part of the discussion.
All you need to do is to reply a counter argument that supports your idea, not much about the importance.

(it's good that you posted this here in B&H board since you wouldn't like the responses that you'll get in the Development board)

Regards,
1677  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Lost Bitcoins on: August 16, 2022, 05:24:00 AM
You can't compare Bitcoin to a centralized system just like that.

Firstly, existing UTXOs aren't "credits", those are locked through scripts that can only be unlocked using the owner's private key.
Secondly, the developers don't have access to the users' private keys or full control of the blockchain, they can't just decide to spend or move a coin if they want to.
And lastly, The coins which are in the 'blocks' which form the 'blockchain' isn't stored in a single server that can be manipulated by a single entity.
The blockchain is stored in every 'full node', those are the users of the reference client 'Bitcoin Core' or other alternative implementations of Bitcoin that follow the network's protocol.

So anyone (even the developers) can make that "insurance company" but they can't just issue the coins to the claimers,
they still need the private key or change the network's protocol which requires the agreement of the whole Bitcoin network (the users).

Once all this is done the bitcoin developers can credit the possesser of the public address with a new private address issued in a hash that says they possess the amount of bitcoins that was lost. This can work and should be implemented asap.
Can you elaborate this implementation?

Any idea on how to import the keys. I have looked up how to do it from Kleopatra and I haven't found a way yet.
Try to use a different keyserver; for some reason, "keys.openpgp.org" doesn't seem to work at my end as well.
You can use "hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com", but any other reputable keyserver will do.
1679  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Q4 2010-Q1 2011 wallets on: August 16, 2022, 03:57:45 AM
For reference, OP already tried various old versions of Electrum before the compatibility-breaking updates and failed to restore the correct wallet.
Here is his old thread: Trying to restore my wallet from 2009 or earlier
1680  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mycelium Imported Private Key Backup on: August 16, 2022, 03:35:22 AM
I imported one private key to Myceliun and I lost the priv. Key, so is it possible to somewho see this private key on my Mycelium?
-snip-
You should be backing up your wallet in seed phrase form though, as it's easy to manual copy and store as compared to a private key
His private key wont be included to the backup if he do that since he said "imported one private key".
The seed phrase will only backup the HD account(s) from his Mycelium wallet.

Anyways, I believe OP isn't interested on the answers here as he already satisfied his goal with a single post.
