Did somebody give you this txid as proof of payment? In this case, they might be trying to scam you...

1663  Economy / Lending / Re: need a btc loan against my 1000$ monthly earning website as Collateral on: March 18, 2020, 12:40:22 PM

hello you can check the google about my site courses video proof as well earning proof as well so this is not lie as well if you need escrow then i don't have problem with that as well i am not selling domain i need loan against my site site you can check it out about this on youtube as well thanks

I'm not denying that there are videos out there that proof somebody earned money from a site where you can give admin access to a lender... I'm just saying that collateral should be something the borrower gives to the lender so the lender can sell the collateral in case the borrower  defaults... In your case: what can a borrower do if you default and he only has admin access to a site with earning potential, and you can actually REMOVE his admin access with a simple db query so he is left with nothing at all???

Anyways, i'm leaving this thread now, i just wanted to point out the flaw in your logic.... I do give loans sometimes (but very seldom) and this offer defenatly doesn't interest me...

These words from Vod are just as true now as they were the day he wrote this post:
What is considered collateral?

Collateral is something that can easily be resold to cover the loan value plus interest should the loaner default on the loan.

--snip--
- Some digital wares such as domain names can be considered as long as the user cannot recover it.
--snip--

What is not considered collateral?

--snip--
- Items they want to sell.  They don't want it back, so they will default.  It's scammy unethical behavior and will lead to negative trust.  Check their recent posts!
- Items not in hand.  Don't trust a user that promises to give you something *when* they default!  Tracking numbers only show something has been mailed - it could be an empty box.
- Future income.  You can prove you'll make xx coins in the next few days, but nothing forces you to send those coins to pay your debt.
--snip--

In your case:
  • as long as the domain isn't tranferred to an escrow or the  lender, you can still recover it. Admin access means nothing, it has to be transferred to the private registrar's account of either the borrower or an escrow WITH contracts that allow the escrow or the borrower to legally keep the tld if you default
  • a different user pointed out that your domain is actually for sale
  • as long as the domain isn't tranferred to an escrow or the  lender, it is not in hand
  • future income (because it's an earning site) should not be considered as it is not guaranteed
  • even if you transfer the domain to the lender, there is no guarantee he'll be able to quickly sell it in case you default... It's not like you're using the google.com tld as collateral tbh

1664  Economy / Lending / Re: need a btc loan against my 1000$ monthly earning website as Collateral on: March 18, 2020, 11:41:10 AM
So you're giving an admin account as collateral... But what's stopping you from revoking admin access as soon as somebody gives you the funds?
It's still  hosted on your hosting, you're still the owner of the domain...

I would never take a domain as collateral, but if i would ever accept one as collateral, the only way would be to transfer the domain to a trusted escrow together with actual paperwork, so the escrow can either transfer it back to you if you repay, or transfer it to the lender if you fail to repay... It would be a hassle, and it would be hard to determine if your domain is actually worth >$1500. In my experience most domains are greatly over-appreciated by domain appraisal companies or domain owners, but if you actually want to sell a domain either nobody is interested or the price is a LOT lower than the estimated value.
1665  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: [FREE PRIVATE GIVEAWAY] Bitcoin keychain on: March 18, 2020, 07:41:50 AM
Loool! I think we can agree the situation is hilarious but also frustrating. Let's see what happens next week then Smiley Will #2 and #5 be excluded from the next try?

However, I'm curious about some conclusions after you'll draw the line. Such as - how did things go from your perspective while trying to follow the new procedure? Although there was lack of interest, the organization itself is easy / difficult? Is it recommendable for others? Can your measures really offer extra-privacy? Should them be followed (the part with 10min mail and signing a message from a BTC address)? And so on. Maybe sharing some thoughts from your perspective can help other users which will organize such raffles.

Well, it's rather hard to exclude numbers, the last digit of the hash of the blockheader is going to be completely random, and it was hard enough as it is to fill the current roster... But i have an 11 year old daughter, if #2 or #5 are hit, i'll give her a bitcoin keychain and post the pictures in this thread when she receives it Smiley

My remarks about this form of giveaway:
  • It guarantees a LOT more anonimity... I have no idear which useraccounts are participating, execpt a few that did send me a PM afterwards, or used an already used btc address to include with their ticket
  • The organisation is a lot more difficult... You have to generate a draw, verify tickets, create hashes, keep a sheet with codes/btc_addresses/slotnumbers, generate a raffle email, check the email,...
  • I think this kind of raffle is better suited for a paying raffle, there will be more interest for this and people won't forget to check their tickets if they payed actual money for their ticket
  • I'm pretty sure there were cheaters that participated with alt accounts... I received 2 pairs of emails (so 4 in total), each pair using the same template (same email provider, different address => same sex => same region for the name => same wording => same sentences => same type of address => ...). Next time i'll also ask for a hash of their firstname_lastname, no capital letters, no initials, just first and last name hashed. That way it's a little harder to cheat: if the first name and last name do not match, the price is denied... This is not unbeatable tough, nothing is stopping the cheater from using their spouse's name, or misspell their name a couple of times...
1666  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: [FREE PRIVATE GIVEAWAY] Bitcoin keychain on: March 17, 2020, 07:43:39 PM
The winner has untill monday 16th of march to contact me with the same conditions as the previous draw.

So... did the new winner show up? Or shall we assist to a new election? Smiley

No, no winner showed up... But to be honest, i'm not planning to keep repeating this draw until finally someone claims their price. It's just a keychain worth a couple bucks, it's not worth the time I put in...

I'll think about organizing it one more time next week, but if the winner doesn't show up once again I'm calling this a failure and lock the thread.

1668  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Segwit or Native Segwit? on: March 16, 2020, 02:24:26 PM
So I selected the native segwit account to send BTC. When it went through It ended up in the Legacy account and not the Native Segwit Acccount. What the heck?

Is this going to be a problem?

Well.... It's not going to be a problem if the address that was finally funded was generated by your ledger... If i'm not mistaking, a ledger allows you to have different "kinds" of wallets next to each other (p2pkh, sw, native sw), so if binance finally funded the "wrong" address, it's probably because you selected the "wrong" wallet to generate a receiving address.

But, as i said, as long as the legacy address that finally received the funds is part of your wallet, nothing really bad happened... You'll just end up paying a couple cents more when you decide to spend those funds.

Do double-check you weren't a victim of a copy/paste virus or a phising website!!!
1669  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Segwit or Native Segwit? on: March 16, 2020, 12:58:55 PM
There is nothing you "should" do. Old, p2pkh, addresses (starting with 1) are just as valid as nested sw (starting with 3) and as native segwit (bc1).

The major difference is that segwit moves the signatures of any transaction you create with unspent outputs funding the segwit address to a different part of the bitcoin block, by doing so, the space the transaction occupies in the first 1 Mb is smaller, so you'll get away with paying a lower fee for your transaction.

There used to be some services that were not adapted to the new format, but afaik, all major services should now recognize segwith addresses.

Thank you for this walktrough, it really helped me out...

I did a quick test spin-up using your walktrough:
https://blog.mocacinno.com/
There were a couple of pitfalls, for example the correct configuration and installation of many of the prereqs (like setting up nginx as a reverse proxy for localhost:8080, ssl certificates, security concerns, correct postgres config,...)

I've taken some notes on how to setup everything on a clean ubuntu 18.04 VPS, so in case anybody is interested, i might scratch the vps again and do a complete setup while taking screenshots or something.

This installation will only exist as long as i don't need the resources, it's not even completely configured. Don't use this forum for anything more than making testposts, chances are that everything will be scratched in less than a week...

Oh I finally understood.

So in this case, if a new winner will be elected, he should have kept his code, he should know its hash and he has to sign from the BTC address already emailed. But you don't have the email anymore.

Maybe reorganize the email part again? This could be a solution... I guess.

Yep, that's correct, but i won't reorganize the email part tough... Not keeping track of the email addresses was intentional. I wanted this giveaway to be as anonyous as humanly possible, so i only kept the info that could never be used to identify an individual (like an unused address or a piece of code).

The winner of the last draw has failed to contact me in a timely matter, so i'll now do a re-draw... Let's use block #621450 (we're at 621447 right now).
The winner has untill monday 16th of march to contact me with the same conditions as the previous draw.

Good luck everybody!

I have a couple of questions regarding wallets which will, no doubt, confirm my ignorance...

Once I've chosen a wallet, what happens? Do I have to put money in it to be able to purchase coins? Do I have to 'activate' a wallet by paying money in?
Do I have to put money in to cover transaction fees? Do I have to link the wallet to a specific exchange or is that done depending on which wallet is used?

I'm trying to establish, in my own mind, exactly what the process is. Is there a step by step idiots guide to this? I want to try to understand so that I can identify the BS that is being fed to my brother.

Any info will be gratefully received.

Thanks

I'm writing from my phone, so it'll be brief:
A wallet is not an exchange. You use an exchange to convert fiat money to bitcoin.
A decent wallet is created to manage bitcoin, it doesn't care about fiat money (although some wallets work together with an exchange, so it looks like the exchange is part of your wallet)

There are plenty of free wallets, the only wallets you want to pay for are hardware Wallets like trezor or ledger.

So
Fiat => exchange => bitcoin => decent wallet

If you spend funds using your wallet, the wallet will create a transaction, and it'll include a miners fee...

You don't activate wallets, off course you won't be able to send funds if you haven't funded an address belonging to your wallet.

I'd love to write a full walkthrough, but not from my phone.

If he has to pay money to get access to money that's actually his, it's a scam.

Never pay btc to somebody to "release" btc you already own, if somebody asked you to do this in a fiat setting, you'd call them a scammer and call the police in a heartbeat, but it seems like new users dealing with crypto get blindsighted by lack of technical knowledge and/or plain greed, and they get scammed by scammers that use tricks that wouldn't work if you were taking about USD or EUR...

Your brother should have received the funds in a desktop or hardware wallet OF HIS CHOICE, never trust an online wallet or exchange to hold your funds, but that's all hindsight now.

Then would you consider to pick a new winner in the following days, in case the first winner still doesn't show up?

Besides, there isn't needed the email, at least that's what I understood. The winner was supposed only to sign a message from the BTC addeess mentioned in the email. Did I understand wrong?

No, you got it correct, the only thing is: without email addresses or bitcointalk usernames, I have no way to identify the winner... If the winner doesn't check his/her ticket and/or doesn't come foreward, I have no way of contacting him/her.

Sure, I'll organize a redraw on Friday, the previous winner has had sufficient time to contact me.

Hey mocacinno, any news in the giveaway? Did the winner send the proof? Was the prize delivered?

I'm curious how things went. Maybe others will implement this feature too, if they see that your attempt worked smooth.

Nope, he\she never contacted me, and since most applications came from throwaway addresses, I didn't keep any of them, just a list of codes and btc addresses... I do still check my mail every couple of days just in case the winner pops up Smiley
