Ok, despite security I want to be anonymous. Does Armory provide anonymity like you can't be connected with wallet owner's IP when using Armory?
Armory uses bitcoin-qt for network communication. You can use blockchain.info to broadcast your transactions, if you don't want to expose your ip to the public. |

If your host machine is compromised then the guest OS can also be compromised. So there is no benefit from running your wallet in a VM under windows.
I highly doubt anyone is going to write malware that can compromise a virtual machine and a the guest. It's by no means 100% secure, but it definitely offers more security. For added security, you can buy a USB flash drive and install linux on that. At least that way, a compromised windows system has no chance of compromising your (secure) linux system. |

Any wallet with built-in encryption will prevent unauthorized access. Keep in mind that no amount of encryption will help if you're being keylogged, so keep your system secure from malicious software.

please note that fees are based on transaction size, not a fixed percent. If your inputs are less than 0.001 BTC, they're probably not economical to spend. I'm also trying to upload my wallet to blockchain.info if you think that would work? I believe somebody somewhere along the way has said that would consolidate my dust....
I'm not sure how that would help reduce fees, considering there are still tons of dust inputs. |

I ran real temp and chkdsk and both are okay. So, still at a loss as to what was causing the shut down problem. I also checked for viruses and my computer is clean. Perhaps it is a case of bad ram. Is there a way to check a computer's ram short of taking the machine to a computer repair shop?
edit: Found a program to test my ram and found nothing wrong here either. Any other ideas?
You could run some CPU stress tests like prime95 (run it on "blend") for 3-4 hours. Also try running "sfc /scannnow" in command prompt to check for damaged system files. |

If windows decided to cut your file while bitcoin was running, then you are screwed because bitcoin could not save its private keys before backup.
Is this really the default behavior of the QT client? Because that would make it very susceptible to something like a power outage or computer crash. I would imagine that any newly generated private keys would be immediately stored in the wallet file (in addition to being kept in RAM). Private keys are pulled out of a "keypool". Once the keypool runs out, it is refilled. Therefore during a power outage, unless a new keypool was generated, you will still have all your keys. What I don't understand is that I sent a transaction to an address generated in QT--and the transaction showed up. I clicked and dragged the file to my desktop and them immediately to an external drive. I still have the file--but when I put it back into the bitcoin folder (C:\Users\ken\Appdata\Roaming\Bitcoin)--the account shows 0 coins
In addition to private keys, wallet.dat also keeps track of your transactions. If you moved it before bitcoin could write transaction details, the copied wallet.dat will not contain the transaction. However, bitcoin generates a "keypool" when the wallet is first created. If those keys were successfully saved, you can probably recover your coins. So what I don't is that somewhere there is a BTC address with the money assigned to that address/account, and I have the address. So why can't someone, somehow claim it? Where does it go? It is 4 coins which were lost--so is someone else going to be able to take it?
The other thing I don't quite understand conceptually is what a private key has to do with it, where to find it, and even how to use it to recover the coins if/when I get the key. Perhaps when I digest the page you sent me to that will become clearer--but I have such a headache now I will have to try later.
That's how cryptocurrencies work. The only way to claim possession is through the private key. No key = no cash. |

I have a wallet problem created by too many dust outputs. I'm trying to upload my wallet to blockchain.info and I'm having a problem doing so.
So what is the problem you're having? It helps to know what error instead of randomly guessing what you're experiencing. This user is correct. My initial assumption about dumping keys before import is incorrect. My mistake. |

SO i tried this with a small fraction of BTC, and I reindexed the whole Block Chain but now I have 0 BTC? I dragged and dropped the Bitcoin data directory into the hidden file it is usually on in MAC, and then opened the client and downloaded, but 0 BTC is the problem.
Why?
The data was on a DMG file when I dragged on dropped.
What operating system were you transferring from, and what operating system were you transferring to? |

If you could please tell me exactly what to do with the program you suggest using I would greatly appreciate it. I'm not sure at all what to do. I really a newbie to this--and there is a lot of money lost;( I don't even understand what exactly I would be trying to extract?
Follow the instructions on this page: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=34028.0 to dump private keys. If you are lucky, then all your private keys will be there. If not, then you lost all your private keys. Also, you mentioned "dragging" the file. Depending on your drag destination, windows may choose to copy or cut the file. If windows decided to cut your file while bitcoin was running, then you are screwed because bitcoin could not save its private keys before backup. |

This implies that bitcoin-qt wallet format is not supported by blockchain.info. You need to use pywallet to dump the keys, then paste the output to blockchain.info. |

My computer shuts down and has to be rebooted.
Programs running in usermode (like bitcoin) can not directly cause system crashes[1]. If bitcoin encounters an error, the most you'll see is "bitcoin has stopped working", "assertion failed", or similar dialog box. Nothing else will close except for the faulty program and any dependencies. Usermode applications can however, cause crashes in poorly written drivers or through hardware overheating. Please ensure your system is up to date (windows updates), your drivers are up to date (especially chipset and third party RAID/SATA/SCSI controllers), and your system is not overheating.
