1761  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin QT problems after upgrade on: September 25, 2013, 03:14:10 AM
As a test, I loaded up this wallet with quite a bit of BTC in it ... and tried to send just .0001 BTC

Just to see if all my BTC would suddenly evaporate into thin air.  Or if it would send a tiny amount as expected.

When I hit send, I got this message:

"This transaction is over the size limit.  You can still send it for a fee of 0.0001 BTC, which goes to the nodes that process your transaction and helps to support the network.  Do you want to pay the fee?"

Over the size limit?

I was trying to send 0.0001 BTC.

My paranoia is kicking in and telling me that the software thinks I want to send all my BTC somewhere.  That's the only way it would be over any limit.

Something is seriously wrong.  Can someone please help?  I can't afford to lose everything in this wallet.
1762  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin QT problems after upgrade on: September 25, 2013, 03:07:15 AM
Bump.  Nobody at the QT software company has any input on this?

I am really afraid to send any coins from this wallet.

Why is the encryption suddenly screwing up / not being recognized?
1763  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are you guys listening to any of the BTC Podcasts on: September 24, 2013, 03:08:40 AM
Plan B will be back.  I can't remember when they said they would.

The last minutes of the last podcast they did, they took bets on what the price of BTC would be when they returned.  So they'll be back.

Lets Talk Bitcoin is pretty good.  Content is "stretching it" sometimes mostly because BTC is still brand new.  They had a really good talk on Decentralization and the relevance of it.  Learned a lot.

Podcasts suck to listen to unless you make sure to do it during downtime.  When im making food I have it going, and when im driving.  Totally changed my life to start doing that.  The vast number of topics of interest is ridiculous.
1764  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Storing coins in offline wallet on: September 23, 2013, 07:55:56 PM
Rescan runs on its own when you put a new wallet.dat file in.

So can you clarify why you stated you can't swap your wallet.dat file?

Im still not seeing how that statement is not false.

PS:  I didnt mean "no" transactions are stored in the wallet.  I meant the entire transaction history of the blockchain is not exclusively stored there.  You made the statement that you can not swap your wallet.dat file becuase it will miss transactions.  In fact all transactions are updated when you put the wallet file back into the directory.
1765  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Storing coins in offline wallet on: September 23, 2013, 07:41:09 PM
you can't simply swap out wallet.dat files. Doing so will cause the client to "miss" transactions that appeared when the wallet was not present.
Can you clarify this?   Everybody I know uses this technique without any problem.  Its the most common, and well known technique for storing your BTC safely offline.

You *can* simply swap out the wallet.dat file.  People do it all the time.

The client does not miss transactions because transactions are not stored in the wallet.dat file.  The client downloads blockchain transactions every time its opened.  The wallet.dat file simply catches up when the two are recombined.

1766  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Bitcoin QT problems after upgrade on: September 23, 2013, 06:29:10 PM
I had several wallet.dat files stored on separate drives, using previous version of QT.  All encrypted.

Someone told me to back them up using the QT "backup" option in the software.  Not just manually move them offline.

1)  So I pulled one of the dat files off an external drive, and placed it into the QT directory.

2)  I loaded up QT

4)  The menu system now had "Encrypt Wallet" enabled.  This shouldn't be the case.  This wallet file was already encrypted.

5)  I chose to encrypt again, with the same passphrase, and it told me:

Wallet encryption failed due to an internal error.  Your wallet was not encrypted.

6)  I loaded the same DAT file into a fresh install of QT on an offline computer.  Same thing.

Any suggestions?   I am afraid to proceed.

I have run into problems with the encryption system twice before, and this is the most worrisome aspect to 'break'.

I am going to reinstall QT and try sending money from this wallet to another wallet of mine.

I sure hope the whole balance doesn't suddenly disappear when I do so ...

Is there something I was supposed to do after the recent upgrade, if I had wallet dat files stored somewhere?

Thanks.

I never really was a podcast guy because I didn't see the point.  Until curiosity got the best of me and I downloaded an app on the iPhone and hit the "Search" button.  Every topic I could think of.  Now I am subscribed to several, and while I drive (easily 30 minutes to 1 hour downtime every day) I am saturating my brain with incredible knowledge on technologies, health issues, and more.

So there are a few Bitcoin podcasts that I found and I always wonder if all you guys are listening to them.  I can't think of any other source of updated info as good as these things so I figured why not mention them here.   You can get whatever podcast app you want but the one I got is:  PodCruncher ... and the podcasts I have found .. just search these:  Plan B  ... and search: lets talk bitcoin.

1768  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Need a PayPal refund for your BFL purchase? on: September 21, 2013, 12:06:17 AM
I purchased I think in June, and initiated a refund request at (i think) the 43 day mark (of total 45 days allowed?).  I paid $2,800 roughly for the 50GH/s unit.

I chose to call it in, and the girl on the phone who was apparently in the Philippines (this concerned me but turned out to not be an issue) assured me no questions asked that if I had not received my order in a "timely manner" they would reverse the charge forceably on my behalf.

I told her "What if the site claims its a preorder and makes no guarantee as to when it will ship?"

She replied "That doesn't matter.  You ordered, and its been sufficent time for them to ship.  If they can't provide tracking information on your order then we consider it failure to deliver.  So I will initiate a claim for you".

A few days later I got this really strange notice - automated email saying BFL had credited me for my shipping fee's only.

Not sure what that was all about.

I waited a full 7 business days and the money was refunded into my paypal account.  Got all of it back.

Thank you PayPal!

"What is the best way to get local businesses to start accepting Bitcoin?"

Simple.

Tell them there are no (or tiny) transaction fees and they'll save tens of thousands of dollars a month by doing so.

Tokyo is a badass city.  No doubt the party there would be insane ...
1772  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Letter by Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs on: September 03, 2013, 11:52:24 PM
This letter is irrelevant.
Irrelevant:  Only in the sense that even if they decided to completely shut down Bitcoin and ban it in the USA, it would still flourish because its international, and viral.

Relevant:  Because its a huge first step in acknowledgement, which will increase Bitcoin value, legitimacy, and success.

Therefore this letter is very relevant.

The customer service rep is complaining in her blog that people are saying bad words to her.

Sorry.  I couldn't shake how hilarious that is to me.

Everyone I know who does wrong to others always views themselves as the victim.  No matter what they're doing to others.

Its fascinating that defrauding thousands of people out of hundreds of thousands of dollars is "okay" but Jody at BFL doesn't want to hear naughty words.

1774  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Poll: How many Bitcoins do you own? on: September 03, 2013, 02:14:56 AM
20 people have 2,000+ bitcoins?

"I hate you"

 Grin

And its perfectly safe to say how many you have in the poll option.  Thats anonymous.
1775  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Litecoin Price to hit $25? on: August 30, 2013, 10:58:18 PM
So you're expecting a coin that has almost non exsistant services to reach 1/4 of BTC.
I do believe there will be a jump when Gox adds it.  $2.50 is hardly a hefty price right now.

And a jump to $25 isn't that insane given BTC is now pushing $140.

Neither LTC nor BTC are exactly saturating the 'services' market.

Both are operating purely based on supply and demand right now.

BTC is only starting to be included in business models for various companies.

So a jump when Gox adds it?  Yes.

And another huge growth period if BTC saturates the market ?  Definitely.
1776  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Litecoin Price to hit $25? on: August 30, 2013, 07:09:31 PM
So you guys think that just being accepted by GOX will incease LTC value possibly to $25 or even $75?

Is that because for once you can exchange it directly with USD?

Trying to get my head around the biggest motivating factor for why the price would go up.

Obviously ease of availability.  Wouldn't have to go USD > BTC > LTC just to get LTC.

Is it that interaction directly between USD <--> LTC that would increase its value?

I hope coinbase adds Litecoin as well.

1778  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Coinbase Policy for Bounced Payments on: August 30, 2013, 06:50:05 PM
Update:  I had opened a few tickets and got no reply to them for a couple weeks.  Strange, but Olaf finally replied in one of the tickets.  Short and sweet.  They'll reattempt the ACH withdrawal and reactivate my account.  Just wanted to update this thread so that the good news would be documented.  They didn't even charge me a fee for the inconvenience, which really was kind of them.  I deserved a slap on the wrist at least.  Thank you to Coinbase. I have also updated the first post in this thread so any newcomers will see the resolution before the drama Smiley

Despite this hiccup i am completely blown away by how far ahead of all the other companies you guys are excelling.  Hiring the Litecoin founder, offering free transactions to merchants up to $1 Million is incredible (!!) ... instant BTC purchases are outstanding (but i proved how risky that can be for you guys, so I appreciate your willingness to work with me).

How long before you accept Litecion?  Smiley

I think the only challenge at this point is that it took so long to get a reply to tickets I had opened.  I ultimately had to post here, and on your "public" support forum before I finally got a response (10+ days).  Probably just growing pains im sure.  But if replies had been immediate, I could have paid with BTC before the price changed drastically.  I'd suggest doing it via USD anyways, as BTC price could skydive and you'd be out money from the customer.  Reinitating the ACH for USD seems the best way to go, and by all means, you should charge a fee for that.  You shouldn't have to cover the cost for the resubmission when people like me screw up.  Thanks again.
1779  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Coinbase Policy for Bounced Payments on: August 27, 2013, 04:35:10 AM
What the fuck are you talking about?

Who is blaming coinbase?

Where did you learn to read?

Go back to the first post, up your IQ about 70 points, and read again, Troll.

I cant stand people who read the first line of a post ("He bounced payment therefore he's an idiot")
... then assume:  "He sounds like hes complaining therefore I will make dumb assumptions and tell him off!"

Here is a summary for the mentally retarded:

1)  I am not giving them an extra $200 worth of Bitcoins to resolve this issue of a bounced ACH withdrawal.

2)  I only owe them in USD, what I owe them in USD, at the time of purchase.

3)  LIKEWISE:  If the price of BTC had dropped to $50 overnight, I would still expect to owe them the USD$ I owed them at the time of purchase.

4)  Its called "Accepting responsibility".
1780  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Coinbase Policy for Bounced Payments on: August 27, 2013, 04:27:00 AM
I mean im happy to pay a $20 fee for them to resubmit the ACH, but these companies always do this crap.  Credit card companies, electric bill, cell phone - they refuse to resubmit the ACH withdrawal, and force you to practically walk cash to their front door.  (usually demanding a cashiers check).  As if there's some huge risk for them to resubmit the ACH.
But then you've got coinbase who just wants Bitcoins.  So thats even more strange.
