181  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [XPM] [FASTER!] Mining PrimeCoin using DigitalOcean (VPS) on: July 13, 2013, 06:51:50 AM
I have a basic mining question.

I've been moving all my xpm to my local system which is a vdi running ubuntu as I have a mac.  I haven't yet optimized  this miner with Chemisists build and would like to but I'm worried about my existing wallet that has all my xpm.  Do I just need to back up the wallet.dat file to another directory, do the rebuild, then copy back and expect to be able to open it and access all my xpm or is there some other process?

Backuping the wallet is always a good idea, but you don't need to do it for a rebuild. Old and new executable share the same wallet, to be exact every time primecoin software starts it checks to find the wallet in the expected place and uses it if it finds one, or creates new one if there is no wallet there. It never overwrites new wallet destroying the old.

Excellent - that's what I was assuming but wanted to be sure.  Thanks!

FYI - I think the limitation for digitalocean is up to 20 cores per account in whatever way you want to split them up.  Could be wrong on that as someone else mentioned a 5 droplet limit..but I know i definately can't exceed a total of 20 cores.
184  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [XPM] [FASTER!] Mining PrimeCoin using DigitalOcean (VPS) on: July 12, 2013, 09:45:30 AM
I'm a bit confused about the way the payments are done. I have used $10 promo code and if i create 2 cores/2 gig droplet which is $20/month, does it mean they'll charge $10 from my credit card at the end of the month?

No - once you have credit available, its deducted by the minute..you're not committing to run any systems for any specific amount of time.  It's basically pay as you go.

rethaw - thanks a ton for your help - been having fun.

FYI - running an 8 core drop ~1800pps

and 12 core droplet ~2300pps

The 12 core doesnt show up when you create a drop but is available for about .47/hr if you resize an existing one.  Gonna run one of these all night and see how it goes..

Thanks!

Which locations they are located at?

Both in San Francisco

Working better than EC2? Stop using cheap options and try the biggest cluster son  Cool

It does work better than EC2, if you try a big instance let us know your results. Main reason I chose not to is the 8x CPU instance costs more than 8x the tiny instance.

I was able to get a microinstance at EC2 for free for 750 hours (1 year) since I just opened a new account.  The specs are the same as the smallest droplet at DigitalOcean with slightly more memory.  Currently at about 100 pps.

I was facing the same problem, found a solution from here:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=110627.msg1204122#msg1204122

You'll need a bit of swap Wink
Code:
sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile bs=64M count=16
sudo mkswap /swapfile
sudo swapon /swapfile
After compiling, remove swap:
Code:
sudo swapoff /swapfile
sudo rm /swapfile

For myself, this did the trick just fine

Hadn't occurred to me - Thanks - worked perfect.

edit: nevermind..

I had a rebate prepaid american express card with $7 left on it so I figured I would try this out. I configured them for LTC tho. I have 21 drops running all 8 core. I'm getting about 550kh/s total.

Idk if anyone realized but you can keep creating new accounts with the same debit card. The promo code works on them all too, $10 each account.

Also you have to type the code in to make it work, copy/paste doesn't activate the code oddly.

Also, if you do what I did use the ones out of amsterdam, for some reason I was getting bugged ones in the US, it wouldnt give me an IP and just sit there saying its new but not activated. The amsterdam ones worked every time.

Would you share your PPS on the 8-core? Thanks.

According to SunnyKing, the PPS is not indicative of mining performance.  But I guess it's all we have..

Does anyone know if it will be possible to conduct merged mining for namecoin with KNC's miners?  Sorry if this was already discussed and I missed the response..

"Shipping on Production day 2" (1st unit)to Hawaii baby, Oyeah
P.S.  Fox.... apologies.

When did your status change to paid? Mine has said new and i paid for mine july 6th, thanks!!

I paid for mine on July 5th with paypal and it shows paid (or rather payed) at the top of the order status when I click on the more link but still shows "New" in the summary column.  I wouldn't worry about it as this has been normal behavior for all the orders to date.  I think I saw elsewhere in this thread that the newer orders may not show paid with a ship date until August sometime.

Also couple other odd things about paying for paypal in case anyone else experienced the same thing and is wondering.  Right after I paid with paypal and got the confirmation screen, some of the text on the website had changed to Russian cyrilic which was a little disconcerting.  I also received an automatic call from Paypal the following morning to verify the payment was intended.  I figure once you begin to speculate in btc and pre-order mining equipment that has never been built, no sense in being squeemish now  Grin

Does anyone have an estimation how hot the mercury might run with its 250W PSU?  Would it survive in a typical household with air conditioning or would you expect to need more dedicated cooling? Still torn between going through with my purchase or just buying shares in a group buy where most people seem to be using hosting solutions in a data center...
They said they'd planned the devices to be able to run in the Bahamas heat if need be, and had built in large margins in the design generally for things like that. So yeah, I'm sure it'll survive a house with AC.

Thanks for the response - I decided to go ahead and pay for my mercury order.  Has anyone begun buying PSU's for their units? If so, what brands/models?

196  Other / Beginners & Help / When will Kraken and Coinsetter go live? on: July 02, 2013, 08:28:56 PM
Seems like we're really hurting for solid exchanges.  Kraken and Coinsetter are still beta but not active correct?  Anyone know the status of either of these exchanges?

try http://blockchain.info/address/paste-an-address-here

That might be what you're looking for?

Yes - I was familiar with this but was curious if anyone had pulled data from there to do more comprehensive analysis.
198  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is there a place to view wallet statistics? on: June 29, 2013, 01:40:21 AM
There's this - http://bitcoinrichlist.com/charts/bitcoin-distribution-by-address

But that's by address, not wallet, and it isn't very useful because a wallet can have a lot of coins total without any individual address having very many.

Thanks - that's probably the closest thing I've seen that shows what I was interested in seeing.  I know anyway you approach statistics with these things may be skewed one way or another.  It will be interesting to see various trends as time goes by.  Thanks!
199  Other / Beginners & Help / Is there a place to view wallet statistics? on: June 29, 2013, 12:22:02 AM
Would be interesting to see wallet holding statistics to see distribution of btc. Does something like that exist?
200  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How long does coinbase take to set up bank account? on: June 27, 2013, 10:50:50 PM
Your frustration really has nothing to do with Coinbase or bitcoin but current banking systems and the lenght of time for ach.  Apparently, things will be faster at coinbase soon as shown on:

http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1h6bnf/coinbase_is_soon_implementing_instant_coin/

Also, if you're not trading, I'm not sure what the rush is to get coins instantly.  Once you place your order at coinbase, you have them at the price shown.  Unless you're gonna dump them or need to buy something immediately, 6 days could be looked at as moot.
