181  Other / Meta / Re: Deleting the avatar on: September 02, 2014, 05:54:15 AM
I can't imagine why anyone would want to remove an avatar from their profile. The fact that adding/changing avatars has been disabled for some time now makes them prestigious and adds a level of "bling" to accounts that have an avatar, no matter how tacky/bad the avatar is.

I think that an important reason does exist: at some time someone could want to stop endorsing some company/idea/association that he previously set as his avatar.
In my opinion I belive this is the reason why Theymos would accept to manually delete an avatar on request.
182  Other / Meta / Re: Legendary coin color on: August 13, 2014, 01:04:49 PM
About the poll, I would vote for any of the other options but not the yellow.
It seems transparent when displayed on the light gray post row and furthermore it has no shadow anymore...
Looks like the Legendary level only has 4 coins and half, less than Hero!  Grin

Some questions and suggestions:

Is the coin dimension mandatory? Actually it's only 13x13px and the coins seem a bit washed out. If we could use a 16x16 icon like the favicon of the forum then they will be a lot more detailed.

Why use only the 5th coin to distinguish among the upper levels? It always seems to me like a not "full" Hero. Am I the only one?
What about using ALL the coins and color the half bottom part of them (or just the last third)? It could also be just a smaller detail to make the difference, like the color of the BTC symbol or just the border of the coins.

As perhaps an added bonus when coloring all the coins, is the fact that a senior staff member could easly have both 4 coins and the "color badge", instead of always 5 coins even if he's lesser than hero. But probably it was an intended behaviour, just not sure about it.

@rugrats:
I think they look better than the current ones. Just be aware that you resized them to an height of 12px instead of 13.

We've already reached the letter-in-mail level without even mentioning IPoAC?
Pfff!

If you have backed up your wallet file once wild that be enough or so you have so it regularly and why?

It would be enough only if you nearly stop to send BTC from your wallet.

The problem is the so named "change" and the fact that the wallet has only a limited number of pregenerated priv-key/addresses for changes.
At the end (after 100 transactions if I well remember), you will receive your changes on new addresses that aren't saved on your backup copy.

4) Spamming
5) Trolling

They're surely not allowed activities on the forum and they can lead to a ban of the offender(s).
Maybe you should focus on reporting them with some clear and circumstantiated comments in the "Report to moderator" page.
Hope it helps.

187  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: First airline to accept Bitcoin for payment - AirBaltic on: July 22, 2014, 10:37:31 AM
Does anyone know the annual revenues of AirBaltic?
Is it bigger/smaller than other companies already accepting bitcoin?
airBaltic is a rather small company. It operates mostly in the Central/Eastern European region connecting many European cities with Riga International Airport, Latvia (RIX). They've had some really hard financial difficulties recently, but European Commission showed them green light to use financial aid from Latvian government.
more info from their homepage https://www.airbaltic.com/en/index

Pretty exaustive, thank you.
From your link:
Quote
The primary shareholder is the Latvian state with 99.8% of stock.
In 2013 airBaltic carried over 2.95 million passengers.
The airBaltic fleet currently consists of 25 aircraft – five Boeing 737-500, eight Boeing 737-300 and twelve Bombardier Q400Next Gen.

Talking about annual revenues, does someone think we could argue that it's smaller than Dell, or not?
188  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 51% w/o 51% ?? on: July 22, 2014, 10:19:44 AM
You're not stating anything new or unknown. That's the whole point of Bitcoin -- decentralization. The fact that mining is now gradually converging into a centralized state is not a flaw in the mining process, but rather a direct consequence of miners becoming greedy. This trend will continue until all pool operators decide to limit their hashing capacity. Ghash and everyone who insists on mining there with only profit in their minds are the problem, not Bitcoin or mining.

Sorry but I think I disagree.
Quite on the contrary, I think that the problem with mining centralization can be effectively considered a flaw of the protocol and it has to be resolved somehow.

The greed is something inherent the human being, the man, the miner, the pool operator. Bitcoin must be superior to that.
We cannot just hope that these actors will change their minds and won't be greedy anymore, because it will not happen.
Sometime there is someone with good intentions, like the recent GHash.IO statement, but at all times it could appear a player greedier than the previous one. Also, we should consider that even if greed was totally absent, the problem would still be here because anyone with enought resources could be able to destroy bitcoin for whatever reason.

No, I really think that it should be the protocol itself able to auto-defends and to defeat any threat.

It was a Dank and stormy night; the porn fell in torrents - except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent guy of wind which swept down the streets (for it is in London that our penny-farthings lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the the.
191  Other / Off-topic / Re: How many posts do you make per hour you are logged in ? on: July 22, 2014, 07:51:09 AM
I'm pretty low.

428 / ((29*24) + 7) = 0.608 posts/hour

1 full post every 1 hour and 39 mins Smiley

i'd hate to be limited to a phone with bitcoin. if i were, i'd try to have a separate phone for apps, and never download anything onto the phone holding the wallet. too many apps out to get your coins. Undecided

The strange thing is that someone could argue that the less "smart" these phone are, the safer.
I mean, were the older phones so unsecure?

Well, I'm just joking, but in the meanwhile... could someone send me a copy of that bitcoin client for Symbian or Nokia OS? Smiley
193  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 51% w/o 51% ?? on: July 22, 2014, 06:32:49 AM
I'm thinking PoW really needs decentralized mining to truly be safe.

Decentralization is the key, but I think I'm stating the obvious here.

Some time ago, when I read about it, I liked the idea of P2Pool and I thought that soon it would have become the norm.
That never happened and looking at the stats on blockchain.info it's currently just the 1% of total hash rate.

Why a so huge fail?  Huh
194  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Dell.com now accepts bitcoin! on: July 22, 2014, 06:06:38 AM
Anyone know if Dell will ship the pc abroad?

Not at the moment.

A quote from Dell's CIO:
Quote
We wanted to start up with the US base, and from that, we’ll see where we wanted to move next.
The big thing here is being able to be a lot more agile in terms of addressing our customers’ needs.

Oh, I see. I've a bit extrapolated malevolent's answer.

It's a pity that the merge function doesn't work as it should, I think it could be useful in some cases where informations are scattered all over the forums, like perhaps my previous example.

Trying to not extrapolate again, can we at least suppose that, in the case it would work flawlessly and a piece of cake to use, the merge function of the new forum could be used more often than now?
196  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What happened? (summary) on: July 22, 2014, 03:58:41 AM

Sure, but I was just reporting the OP's question as an introduction of my answer. Smiley

I see sooo many new altcoins  Shocked It's kind of ridiculous
but kinda ridiculous to see this sub section : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=159.0 Grin

That sub-section is incredible: in some moments of the day there are the first 10/11 pages full of awesome threads (LOL) with almost a post done in the current day.
That does mean about (11x40)...

440 threads updated daily!
197  Other / Meta / Re: Moderation in "Politics & Society" on: July 22, 2014, 03:05:19 AM
I can't merge topics, but I PM'd him to slow down a bit.

TL;DR
Does it suggest that if this feature were available, it would be used when needed?
If yes, can't wait to see this feature implemented in the new forum.

Extended:
I never thought that mods were currently unable to merge/split threads, infact I was going to ask a similar request for the 6/7 threads about Dell accepting BTC.
It's a waste of time to try to follow the same discussion in so much places.

Furthermore, if you have something interesting to post, you have to select in which thread to post because I think that posting the same message 6/7 times could be considered as SPAM.
In my case, it was an interesting chart about how much Dell is bigger than other companies accepting BTC, but I posted it in just a couple of thread and then stopped (despite the fact that many users didn't seem to be aware of that).
I also had some thoughts on starting my own thread about the chart, but then it would have been the 8th one on the same topic, with me becoming part of the problem!  Cheesy

So, please, add this merge feature ASAP! Smiley

Then it might have been compromised by an app, which is what everyone else is suggesting.  If you want to store some bitcoins for day to day use, I suggest you signup for blockchain.info (website) and use google authenticator on your phone.  Be sure you don't have any dangerous/suspicious programs installed.
Probably the best most simple tip i've ever received, thanks ill try that

Be sure you have read the last sentence of monbux's post.
Because if you have given to some random app the permission to read/send text messages, then I don't think we can consider a 2 Factor Autentication so sure anymore.
199  Economy / Economics / Re: Can bitcoin survive without the Internet? on: July 22, 2014, 12:18:26 AM
Are we talking if it can "technically" survive?

Well, my thoughts are that at the end of the day Internet is just a medium to carry informations. It probably is (one of) the best, the fastest, the most widespread medium but it isn't the unique way to carry informations.

So, without Internet, bitcoin and many other things would be of course much different and probably with huge limitations but I can't see why they couldn't somehow continue to exist, if really needed.

I don't know Android very well, but there are chances that you haven't been hacked in the usual sense but you could have granted yourself too much permissions to some app. If I were you I would start to look at what I installed on my phone.

There are applications like Xprivacy that let you set what permissions you want to grant to which app, but you need a rooted device and also the learning curve to use Xprivacy could be a bit long.

This is an infamous problem with Android's apps. IMO Google should really improve the overall security and privacy aspects of this OS.
