How about posting some of the jobs/bounties on some of the websites in this link?

http://bitcoinexaminer.org/looking-to-work-and-get-paid-in-bitcoin-here-are-six-websites-that-can-help-you/

I noticed several jobs developing for Ripple Labs, Inc. and Coinbase at Coinality:

^ We want people, specifically bitcoiners, to learn about Mastercoin and invest their time, ideas and even money (trading) in Mastercoin.

So, for now, it would be a mistake in my opinion to migrate to a separate forum, where the early enthusiasts isolate themselves from the larger community we are trying to attract.

The time may come for a separate forum, so it is a good idea, but I think it is too early.

1) Has any thought been given to selling a small % of BTC for USD to lock in some of the gains we've made in the development funds and hedge against the risk BTC crashes?
Lock in gains!?  lol that is funny.  You don't 'lock in gains' - you lock out future value.  Don't do this idiot move.  Only take this step on the day you no longer believe in bitcoin's future.  Right now, I'd have to say we are all a bit bullish on bTC

Hedging is actually not idiotic at all. It is in fact what most large organizations do... It is certainly not 'idiotic' to think about it and have a plan for it given how volatile BTC is. Let me give you an example.

Hedging a certain amount of the outgoing funds would mean the Foundation would have sufficient funds available regardless of any crash in the price of BTC.
How's that hedging plan looking now?  Hedging is a bet against yourself/your interests.  Either you believe in the future ofBTC or you don't .  If you don't, go buy facebook shares.

I am sure happy the foundation doesn't have guys like you on it to take the funds and place bets against meteoric rise.  Now MSC project has $2.0 million to spend rather than 'locking in' $.4 million.  Nice.

Talk about misrepresenting my point, including adding made up numbers.

BTW, one of the points of Mastercoin is to add features that allow for hedging strategies.
184  Other / MultiBit / Printing copy of exported private key for safekeeping on: November 18, 2013, 09:15:35 AM
I have a question:

Many times I exported the private keys to a USB and the key file has a long string beginning with a "U". There is a different sting of numbers and letters each time I do this. I understand this is not the normal way private keys appear. Is this because a password was used?

In order to save the private keys in their normal format, do you need to export the key without a password?

Thanks in advance for any replies.  Smiley

Can you sendmany? Or do you have to use another client? thanks a lot

Thanks for the replies.

Export private key from MultiBit without password - this is important.

Can you tell me why this is important? Is it because if you export the private key with a password, the readable version of the password is different - starts with U rather than K or L, for example?  And if you export the private key without the password you can read the actual private key?

187  Other / MultiBit / Exporting a Private Key from Multibit; Importing the key to Bitcoin-QT on: November 17, 2013, 09:35:16 AM
Can I export a Multibit private key in compressed encoding format to the Bitcoin-QT client using importprivkey?

Is there anything I should be concerned with in doing this - such as having the private key in two different clients?

Thanks in advance.
188  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Importing Private Keys to Bitcoin-QT on: November 17, 2013, 09:28:45 AM
I would like to import a private key to the Bitcoin-QT client.

My questions:

1) Can I import a WIFC key, i.e., compressed private key, beginning with "K" or "L" rather than WIF key beginning with "5" ?  Does Bitcoin-QT accept both private key encoding formats -- i.e., compressed and non-compressed?

2) If I import the key from another client, should I be concerned that the key exists in two wallets?

Please note that I do not want to simply send funds from one client to another.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hedging is actually not idiotic at all. It is in fact what most large organizations do if they have currency or interest rate risks with respect to their accounts payable. That's why the OTC derivative market is so huge. It is certainly not 'idiotic' to think about it and have a plan for it given how volatile BTC is. Let me give you an example. Let say BTC reaches $1000 in 3 months and then crashes to $200 in month 4. Lets say the Board plans to spend X amount of BTC or USD in the next 12 months. That X amount is being spent regardless in the next 12 months. It is not being held long term as an investment - so one's view on the long term future of BTC is irrelevant. Hedging would mean the Foundation would have sufficient funds available regardless of any crash in the price of BTC. Again, we are spending a certain % of the funds regardless, not holding it all as a long term investment.

You dont hedge as a trading strategy you hedge to make your balance sheet deterministic.

Yes. If you have expenses in a certain currency and hold funds in another currency.

And I'm just throwing some thoughts out there for consideration; not suggesting I have the answer or that there is a 'correct' answer. I hope my other points on the security of the funds are not lost in a discussion of the use of hedging.

A few questions regarding the Mastercoin funds:

1) Has any thought been given to selling a small % of BTC for USD to lock in some of the gains we've made in the development funds and hedge against the risk BTC crashes? For example, let's say we have a huge run up next week and 1 BTC = $500. Or if BTC reaches $1000 in the next several months? In the latter example, would it make sense to sell 1000 BTC and put $1 million USD in the Mastercoin Foundations' bank account. I don't believe the board should engage in trading the funds on a regular basis at all, but a "one off" sale of some small % of BTC for fiat as a hedge might be something worthy of discussion.

2) Similarly, has any thought been given to paying bounties denominated in anything other than BTC or in some sort of hybrid that hedges the payment such as a combination of BTC/MSC/USD? Or is that too confusing? It seems to make sense to reward the developers with some MCS, to increase their incentive to work.

3) If the funds are being distributed amongst board members what precautions/considerations are being made for/against (i) a rogue board member misappropriating funds, (ii)  death or incapacity of a board member and (iii) security of funds? In the case of (i) is it possible to require two or more board members to access fund in storage? In the case of (ii) it is important that more than one person has access to the private keys (private keys should be in safety deposit boxes or some other secure place accessible by the board in case a board member dies).

4) In the case of BTC, will all of the public addresses holding the funds be published so that MSC holders can periodically view the balance of funds?

5) Has any thought been given to appointing a Treasurer of the Mastercoin Foundation funds, to oversee all of the above, and report to the board and MSC holders? This person should be separate from both JR and RG imo.

What an enlightening comment!

I used the Multibit client to send my BTCs to the Exodus address. Can anyone tell me if this presents any problems given the discussion above re. selling coins? Thanks in advance!

I have asked something similar in the past, and the answer that was given to me was to use qt or armory, because only from these wallets can an outgoing MasterCoin transaction start.

Correct me if I am wrong.

i used blockchain (which apparently also works) so i certainly hope you are wrong.

I don't think you can use multibit because it doesn't allow you to send to multiple addresses in the same transaction.  I also originally used multibit, but I have exported the private key from multibit and imported to a blockchain.info wallet so I could send them if I want to.

Thanks for the replies. So, I just need to import the private key to a wallet that supports sending to multiple addresses in the same transaction such as Bitcoin-QT or Armory?

I haven't used bockchain.info. It's web-based, correct? Thanks.

Congrats to the contestants! Well deserved.

What's up next? Contests, etc?

Also, will we have a wallet that the average person can download with ease that is as secure and easy to use as the main bitcoin wallets?? Will the wallet be downloadable from the mastercoin.org or other website?

Thanks

As I mentioned a few posts back I'm transitioning priority from web wallet to desktop wallet, could I solicit a little feedback on UI design?  What do you guys think?  I'm thinking of dropping test mastercoins from the overview as my feeling is most 'regular' users wouldn't be interested - thoughts?

Thanks Smiley

Nice! I'd like to see it with a white background and black font - reversed basically.
