181  Economy / Speculation / Re: I know what some of you are thinking. on: July 22, 2013, 11:49:46 PM
If you are willing to wait for it you can probably get just about any exchange rate you like.
now you took away the punchline everyone was set up for.
there is one drawback, though. eventually Bitcoin settles in its niche and something else continues to innovate. then it would converge to a non-zero stable value, maybe even driven by - fundamentals.

Regarding the """open source""" via google market issue: could you please make sure the app also makes it into https://f-droid.org/ or explain why this would be inherently less safe? I was just told that f-droid promises verifiability of installed apps but through the idea in here without searching this myself but think it is a big trust issue.
the key issue for me is that it needs to be easy to keep up to date with the recent versions. we produce very frequent builds (sometimes several times a week) and i am looking to automate those as much as possible with gradle. right now, having a single place to publish the apk speeds up the whole process a lot. eventually the updates will become less frequent then the distribution issue can be adressed properly.

you can literally check out the source from github (git clone, gradlew build) and build it yourself. or you can download the signed apk from mycelium.com. of course you need to keep up to date when we release new builds. there will be several changes to the server API while we are in beta.

i don't know enough about the process at f-droid how fast they incorporate changes.  i also doubt that we are elegible because of our license. i think f-droid signs the apks themselves. while highly unlikely any maintainer there _could_ inject any code they want. of course similar things can be said about google play, with the recent APK bugs in the wild. i would personally feel more comfortable with a release signed by the original developers.

i think the optimum way to do it would be for us to provide signed released and f-droid verifies that a certain git tag corresponds to this. i briefly scanned their forums and the process seems highly manual so far.
183  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Instawallet claim process on: July 22, 2013, 09:24:33 AM
chrome refuses to do business with instawallet.org due to the expired cert. in firefox you can add an exception to access it.

When do you estimate 0.6.0 will be out?

it is in the beta channel - if you sign up you have it. (or you build from source)

i have discovered a slight issue with change addresses - almost the hard way.
most users would be unaffected but i think we will not release 0.6.0 as it is now. i will modify how change is handled, and send it back to one of the input addresses (for now). the regular release in the play store will be 0.6.1.
once we have HD wallets we will of course generate a new change address for each TX.

186  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Proposal: Base58 encoded HD Wallet master seed with optional encryption on: July 20, 2013, 07:59:48 AM
i hope there will be a consensus across wallets how to expand the hierachy.

that way you could deduct the hierachy from the blockchain. im some cases additional hierachy metadata is still neccessary. (if you generate millions of nodes without ever using them, for example)
187  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Linux mining distro for the Raspberry PI - MinePeon on: July 20, 2013, 07:56:26 AM
i find that very annoying that minepeon reverts to the donate pools after a reboot. i just accidentally mined for two straight days in someones else pocket.
188  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: BitcoinSpinner on: July 19, 2013, 10:09:31 AM
Does anyone other than a handfull of geeks use name coin for associating a name with a bitcoin address?  I never heard of it.

I also doubt the usefulness of NMC for address shortening. Address shortening is all about usability which is not exactly NMCs strong point.

190  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: BitcoinSpinner on: July 18, 2013, 11:17:44 AM
I keep seeing ideas to increase security gradually, like by keeping secrets in memory only for a short time, displaying them on screen for the user to write down manually, etc.

I don't understand the purpose. All such measures do not ultimately create security. I would call them pseudo-security. If the phone is compromised, they are all exercises in futility, because for a Trojan that has taken over the phone and is attacking the wallet it does not matter much where and for how short a key is present—it will grab the key anyway.

My proposal is to forget about such measures and concentrate only on true, unbreakable security. The user has to be told clearly where the attack vectors are and what exactly he has to do to keep the wallet secure.

One possible way to create security may be to use a separate, sealed device for the cryptographic processes and provide only one communications channel to and from that separate device that is so narrow and observable that it cannot be compromised without that being noticed. By sealed, I mean either dedicated hardware or hardware devoid of any uncontrollable communications channels, like an Android phone without SIM card, without WiFi, without third-party apps, without installing apps, etc.

Make it clear to the user that they should use a full-function wallet on a single, normally used phone only for moderate amounts and tell them clearly that, if the phone is compromised, their bitcoins can get stolen, instead of heaping ineffective measures on the app that create a false sense of security in the unsuspecting user.

You are right on some points. That is why there will be a hardware based solution from Mycelium with buttons and a trusted display in the future (cooperating with the wallet).

Pushing the Software as far as possible is still an interesting exercise. If the private keys never hit flash memory it will make the life of malware and forensics much harder. (i'd love to hear opinions from actual android forensics experts on this) if breaking into Mycelium wallet is harder than simply reading a file from internal storage, malware authors will look for easier targets. so it is not malware-proof but malware-deterrent.

Also, it is kind of impossible to really erase something from modern flash memory, because of wear leveling. even if you think you deleted something the information is physically still there. if we only keep it in main memory for a short time this helps a bit.
191  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Wallet for Android / Re: How to Import Private Keys into Smartphone Digital Wallet (Bitcoin Wallet app)? on: July 16, 2013, 12:29:15 PM
you should try our beta build of the Mycelium Bitcoin Wallet. The source is available at https://github.com/mycelium-com/wallet

importing private keys from vanity andresses, keeping address + private key seperate are core features. please note the software is currently in open beta and changes quite often. as long as you keep your paper backup everything should be alright, though.
192  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Idea: Offline portable wallet on: July 16, 2013, 10:36:59 AM
We are working furiously on the Mycelium Bitocoincard that will enable true offline payments - and also hybrid solutions where one party is online.

For internet connectivity with smartphones among bitcoiners, i would suggest Opengarden. their philosophy aligns very much with Bitcoin.

For situations where the merchant is online and the customer just wants to sign+send a transaction, i can imagine that there will be a way to do this via bluetooth or even NFC somehow.
193  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: BitcoinSpinner on: July 16, 2013, 02:42:06 AM
Jan, at Bitcoin 2013, you talked about the ability to sweep in amounts you kept in a QR code in your physical wallet and change directly back to the physical wallet... when do you think this feature will be more automated in mycelium?
Can you elaborate on this? Right now you can add keys to addresses and spend form it. How would you envision the perfect user interaction for physical paper wallets?

195  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Linux mining distro for the Raspberry PI - MinePeon on: July 14, 2013, 09:20:19 AM
second try. same error message at startup. after logging in with ssh i managed to start httpd manually, though.

had to insert my usb sticks "incrementally" to get them all up and running. a little strange. my usb hubs are definitely not overloaded.
196  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Linux mining distro for the Raspberry PI - MinePeon on: July 14, 2013, 08:49:30 AM
i was trying out the latest version 0.2.2

after booting the first time i got an error message "failed to start apache web server"

logging in via ssh:

Code:
[minepeon@minepeon ~]$ apachectl restart
httpd: Syntax error on line 124 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf: Cannot load /etc/httpd/modules/libphp5.so into server: /etc/httpd/modules/libphp5.so: invalid ELF header
[minepeon@minepeon ~]$

apparently something is broken. will try writing the image again to the sd card
197  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: BitcoinSpinner on: July 13, 2013, 08:42:20 PM
i think it would make sense to not allow deletion of private keys when it is sure that it has never been exported (freshly generated, never exported in any way)
198  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: BitcoinSpinner on: July 12, 2013, 10:34:39 AM
we released a new version with some improvements:

apart from bugfixes i changed the build system to gradle. this should make it trivial to build it from source if you have java +android SDKs installed. (i think you need android v17 and v8 support installed)
see github project https://github.com/mycelium-com/wallet

git clone git@github.com:mycelium-com/wallet.git
./gradlew build

gradle then downloads the whole internet - if everything is configured correctly you should have your  build from source and the (unsigned, non-proguard) apk
please not you cannot keep both the play store + your own version installed on the same device because of the signing keys.

if you are simply interested in the latest versions you can become a beta tester to recieve updates earlier:

to be eligible for testing you need to join the g+ group at
https://plus.google.com/communities/102264813364583686576

you can then activate beta builds at
https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.mycelium.wallet

v0.5.6
Fixed bug that occurs when trying to create an Address from a null string
Adding scrollbar to Enter PIN Dialog
Now correctly updating Clear PIN setting menu item when PIN has just been set or cleared
Address book now has a '+' button that allows you to add an address from clipboard or by scanning an address.
Allowing to import BitcoinSpinner backup from clipboard
Added Keys & Addresses + Transaction History
more consistent font styles

v0.5.5
App name is now Mycelium Wallet instead of Barcode Scanner
removed png  and kept only jpg export ability since most printers do not support it

v0.5.4
Fixed an issue that made the app appear sluggish in most views (you will notice that one)
Added add-to-address-book button on send summary
Displaying name of receiver in send summary if the receiving address is in the address book
Made back-button in Keys & Addresses take you to balance view instead of quitting
Properly centering of "Show to Sender" text when receiving coins
Displaying a warning if you request to receive coins to an address which is not associated with a private key

199  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Problems with bitcoin-24.com WARNING! UPDATE! on: July 11, 2013, 09:40:38 PM
this is not looking too good.
apparently some of the polish funds will remain seized.
after they have been identified the "black sheep" will not recieve euros. fine. so what will happen if a so-called back sheep has sold his ill-gotten money for bitcoins and already withdrew them? bitcoins have already been paid out.

who is going to take the loss?
200  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: BitcoinSpinner on: July 05, 2013, 08:01:23 AM
An admin in the play store is the worst case I could think of, and on the long run I guess it's very likely to have all such wallets get wiped out in some incident. The reward is just too huge to not do it.

For now, the best you can do is have your keys on a paper wallet. We will further improve usability when spending from paper wallets.

I think you will see more product offerings from Mycelium in the future that eliminate even these threats.
