441  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] BitcoinSpinner on: July 22, 2012, 11:03:27 AM
maybe a dumb quesiton:

with very expensive bcrypt hashing with added salts, could a 6 digit pin maybe provide reasonable protection against bruteforcing?
so it would maybe take 5 seconds on a phone to calculate the correct decryption key, which is thrown away as soon as the app is closed.

443  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin London Conference 2012 on: July 19, 2012, 12:43:46 PM
what changes in society can we expect if a country is forced to adopt bitcoin?

as a thought experiment:
for example, if greece exits the euro, drachma hyperinflates and people turn to bitcoins, silver, gold. for practical reasons most transactions would take place in bitcoins..

lets assume the state or a an elected successor entity still exists how would the use of bitcoin shape society?
444  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin London Conference 2012 on: July 18, 2012, 07:36:20 PM
-how taxes would work in a bitcoin dominated world
Depends on what you mean:
- what the state should do to continue taxing people
- if there is a problem with taxes due to afalling price level
- how you should treat Bitcoin for tax purposes

primarily because its a little more controversial and you will get critical questions Smiley afaik some bitcoiners oppose taxes heavily.

my questions are: [imagine me now putting my european-socialist hat on]
could bitcoin due to its transparency improve tax collection fairness in an all-bitcoin world?
could entity de-anonymisation be used to enfore a progressive wealth tax?

what kind of transactions will be taxable
could there be more automation maybe? something like a government-run API "sendmany" or TX fee to settle VAT instantly?
how many tax collectors could we fire once the government gets more efficient?

Destroy the myth of a deflationary price spiral.
+1

the topics lonelyminer posted seem all very non-controversial to be honest.

two ideas:

-how taxes would work in a bitcoin dominated world
-why is bitcoin a fiat/not a fiat currency
446  Economy / Speculation / Re: Rally!!!!! on: July 18, 2012, 12:43:42 PM
Of course, some people just saw a demonstration of what exactly their coins are being used for i.e. for selling them on mtgox. Not withdrawing it from pirate (if anything is there) would be at least unwise given the circumstances.
So you think pirate is already trapped in his own short squeeze and will thus be bankupt soon?

If there is a question mark in the headline one can almost certainly answer: "no!"
isn't this the first rule of journalism?

also, gawker article === bubble time. be wary
449  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can anyone speak to this video? Critical of Bitcoin on: July 17, 2012, 12:57:27 PM
i think he is just trying to wake people up with some controversial quotes.

right at the start "there are only 5 people in the room who understand why [multicast issues on the internet] this so true"

when cleaning up some scarcasm from his text he says:
bitcoin is the best value transaction system in the world
the code seems extemely secure he could not point to any exploit

there are exactly 2 issues he is worried about:
1) scalability because it keeps all transaction history
2) bitcoin is not anonymous

so to counter this criticism:

1) the community is very aware of scalability and is developing fixes for it.
2) this is intentional

interestingly he claimed a bitcoin thief published a donation address somewhere with a different ID. what is the story here?

452  Economy / Collectibles / Re: How would you like to design a bitcoin banknote? on: July 16, 2012, 01:04:12 AM
i do not have a design suggestion but a practical one.

i think there should be self-printable bitcoins. those should secure the private key with a pin/password/pattern.
so if they get lost or stolen they are not as dangerous as "blanks". once a user wants to spend them he writes the pin on the bitcoin note, the reciever then uses this to redeem it.

of course, this only makes sense if the clients support it. but if you set the precedence im sure smart clients will follow.

457  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Kim Dotcom looking for suggestions on payments on: July 11, 2012, 10:40:19 PM
i am also sceptical the coinlabs model will work in the light of modern FPGAs, and possibly soon ASICS.
maybe it was a good idea 6 Months ago, but the coming massive diffculty increase with reward halving makes it look like a weak model.
unless you count people overpaying by 15x with their electricity for music/games.

Rick Falkvinge and others already pointed him to Bitcoin.
Given that he has some issues with frozen funds he has a lot of incentive to see Bitcoin grow.
