Why in the hell in this day and age do they need 'meters' and a meter man anyway?  Can't the meter have a digital thing it it that sends the number to the power company and you can check to make sure THEY are not ripping YOU off?

I still don't get why some strange man has to come into your house to read the meter. Insanity.

The 11.6 drivers have a lot of issues they cleaned up a lot with 11.7

Any suggestions that you have for non-reversible payment options we will evaluate and use if possible.
Another exchange recently announced the ability to deposit cash at Chase and Wells Fargo bank locations.  Sounds about as non-reversible as it gets.

The issue with this is - you, the person depositing cash. What is your  security that they will credit you on the exchange? Obviously such exchange opened  up an account at Chase or several banks, and anyone can go into any bank and deposit cash into someone's account and bamn it's instant and there.

but what's to stop the exchange from running off with the cash or saying they didn't get it?

So again I guess small amounts and trust is required.

184  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Dwolla vs Paxum & MtGox vs Tradehill - for US bitcoiners on: August 13, 2011, 12:44:14 AM
Transferring funds has never been instant.  Instant transactions, like purchasing gas, are made on trust that the transaction will go through.  This is more trust than BTC warrants.  TradeHill and MtGox could accept reversible payments sources if they could be sure that once the payment was approved it could not be reversed.  (Unfortunately not the case with Dwolla.)

In any case you would have to wait for the funds to be approved.

Yes but this is "the scam" of the banks.  In truth.... all transactions are connected and secure and the computers know if the funds are there or not.  The "3 day" wait thing is ridiculous and it's because banks want to float your money in other investments for themselves which they are doing ANYWAY with the fake money digits that are on the computer that is your bank account.  There is NO reason for lack of instantaneous transaction from banks except for the banks games. They are all one and all connected and instantly know if funds are available or not since the entire system is a scam.  Isn't it funny how you can PUT money in a bank and it's instantly there when it's cash but when you want to get out money or deposit a check or something they do these floats....

With the routing numbers on the checks they can instantly know juts like a credit card if it's there or not - the whole network is linked. It's a shell game.

What's the hate on dwolla then? Seems just like paypal2 without all the harassment / rules and support for bitcoin exchanges.
There is no hate on dwolla.
1) Send money to dwolla.
2) Use dwolla to buy bitcoins.
4) Get the bitcoins from the exchange.
3) Reverse your dwolla payment.
5) Congratulation, now you have Bitcoins for free.

And you are banned from the exchange I assume so what would be the point if you are really participating in bitcoin?
You couldn't sell the bitcoins if the value went up... you'd have to go t o another exchange..... more hassle.
I am sure then if you repeated this dwolla would notice and block you as well.

Might work for a small time scam but it seems fairly useless and I imagine the profit that huge exchanges like mtgox is making far more that offsets the occasional little reverse charge fraudster.   Now the hack into their system.... THAT is of serious concern.

186  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Possibly some more 5830's about to come out at newegg on: August 11, 2011, 09:18:59 PM

I have three 5830s in my main machine and they all run at 330 mhash except for the 1st one that is my display.  I can only get 310 out of that or it crashes. So i have 970 mhash coming when I am not using the machine.. about 800 if I am using it (I lower the first cards aggressiveness to 3) This is on Win 7 64 bit ultimate.

I have the opposite effect... my lowest card gets hottest because it is closest to my power supply which is on the bottom of my antec 1200 case - I'm on a evga x58 mobo which has  4 pci-e slots but of course not spaced right, so the lowest card has it's exhaust vent blocked and runs hotter, but still doesn't get above 70 - 71c running full speed.  The middle card runs a full 10c cooler... and the top card runs at about 69c at 310 mhash.

To me it was an easy choice and not a big investment since I sold my old hd 4850 x2 for $100... that's $30 to replace it with a 5830.. then $260 to add two more.. total investment $290... I have about 20 bitcoins now in a month so that's almost fully paid for the cards. A worth while deal.

Now to build or not to build another mining rig from scratch... that is the question... I just don't know... i wish you could just keep daisy chaining video cards without having to buy more mother boards....

187  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Mining on Ixcoin, a new Bitcoin fork on: August 11, 2011, 09:09:36 PM
I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot of this.

We can all start our own fork and be the first adopter and have tons of coins but unfortunately we can only sell them to ourselves so there is no value.  It's like playing monopoly solo AND being the banker... what's the point... no value, it all goes back in the box till there are players.

Note to above paypal comments - this is why I am NOT using paypal and why this thread is here...  I was just posting theoretically.

Quote

I'm in the same boat - dwolla is filled now got to find the right exchange will be watching this thread!

What do you mean dwolla is 'filled' now?

Anyway I just got an account on dwolla and went through the verification process and there seem to be no fees to wire money  in or out from your bank to dwolla?  or am I missing something?  So then I am forced to use Mt Gox vs Tradehill I guess... why would anyone pay a $50 fee to paxum and send them a suitcase of scanned documents of personal data lf if dwolla is doing it for nearly free (minus the small fees of what .25 or .50?), has an established rep, and without all the hassle?  What is the time then after dwolla gets your money to get it into mt gox from dwolla? Instant?

What's the hate on dwolla then? Seems just like paypal2 without all the harassment / rules and support for bitcoin exchanges.

7 years from now I should be able to buy some bit coins...

189  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: WIn7 lock-ups on: August 11, 2011, 08:40:46 PM
I might build one more rig.   I think newer motherboards don't have as many issues and some have as many as 5 pci-e slots...
You shouldn't have to worry about drivers if you have two different cards as long as you install the latest catalyst it has the drivers to all ati cards in it.  I previously had an older HD 4850 x2 and a 5830 in at the same time and it worked fine.
The 4850 x2 slightly outperformed the HD 5830 in games at 1920 x 1080p but the 5830 blows it out of the water in mining and is much smaller and runs cooler.  The 4850 x2 was the size of a freaking battleship I think it was the biggest graphics card ever made it could BARELY fit in the biggest full tower case I could find.

Now I have three 5830s humming along nicely.  I keep the crossfire cable on but keep crossfire off, but if I want to do some intense graphics (HD editing or gaming) I let the third card continue mining, turn crossfire on, and wow the two 5830s in crossfire mode are mind bending.  The latest crysis runs at highest setting at 1920 x 1080p at about 60 fps.... amazing looking....  I'm bored with shooter games though... wish something would come along better than another shoot people or follow this linear story while maching your mouse button game.

But hey, this is the bitcoin forum.  So anyway are you running the beta of catalyst 11.7? It's very good and fixes a lot of issues.

190  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: WIn7 lock-ups on: August 11, 2011, 04:07:36 AM

I find it is only the FIRST card that can cause the instability.

I have three 5830s in a rig and the 2nd two gpus in slots 3 & 4 (evga x58 sli mobo - 4 pci-express slots)
can take full overclocking at 1030 core clock and 320 mem clock and easily hit 328 to 330 mhash reliably and stable

It's when I ALSO mine with my 5830 that is my main display card that lockups happen.  The memory timing doesn't matter much for doing the hash math but it does matter for displaying out to a screen, so if I am working on my computer I always max out all the cards except the card in slot one that is the main display card... I keep that near standard clock are overclocked a bit without mem clock changes.  Mem speed is needed when graphics are updated it is not needed when no monitors are connected... and that is what I find freezes up the machine.

I can use my machine nicely with all three cards going with the first 5830 set at default speeds and 3 aggression - which gives me about 180 to 200 mhash depending on what else I am doing.

Cards 2 and 3 are going full steam giving me between 320 to 330 mhash at aggression of about 8 to 11... I play with it depending on what I am doing on the computer.

It's almost always your main card in PCI-E slot number 1 closest to the processor that will hang your system (at least on windows 7 64 bit) not the other ones.

Seriously for less than that money you could buy a mobo, power supply, and 4 5830s....  over 1300 mhash instead of 800
192  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Dwolla vs Paxum & MtGox vs Tradehill - for US bitcoiners on: August 11, 2011, 03:50:33 AM
No, not a grey area.  The list is prohibited activities, not prohibited entities.

It is not prohibited to send money to any user for any reason.....  I can just send a friend money for no reason whatsoever.. it's my friend... I'm sending him money.

So if I do a transaction with someone for an ebook or other service, that is allowed.  If that person sends me bitcoins that is completely separate and had nothing to do with my paypal transaction.

If I send paypal money and say, "here's money for some bitcoins" THEN and only then have I broken terms of service.
Or if I paypal money TO a bitcoin service.

I have done neither of the above, so I have not broken any terms of service.

But anyway... that is another topic.... I am looking for the best U.S. way to buy and sell bitcoins without outrageous fees or long waits.

Tell me what the right price is for you.  I told you what I normally get paid....  make me an offer you can afford.  If I have the time I'll take it and do it if not no harm done.

194  Bitcoin / Project Development / Bitcoin Texas Hold Em poker on XBOX Live 360 on: August 10, 2011, 07:09:49 AM
We have seen little sites come and attempt bitcoin poker but all seem to be plagued with fraud... bots... lack of good software / user interface ect.

I love Texas Hold Em and would enjoy playing with other players for bitcoins.   We could USE the Xbox LIVE Full House Poker as the interface and run a private tournament.

We would agree what we wanted to play for..... I propose 1 bitcoin per table slot.  Tournaments can accommodate up to 30 players.

You would transfer your 1 bitcoin to me and your gamer tag and we will set a time for the tourney and I will set up the table and private invites.  We will play, and  award the last player standing the full amount of bitcoins.  There will be no rake, but you may choose to tip or donate, to set up this project.

Let me know if there is any interest in this.  Plenty of you out there have xbox LIVE and the Full House Poker program is cheap (i think $8 bucks), and there can be no cheating as the cards are dealt by xbox live servers and there is no rake. I suppose there could be collusion but if you are caught for sure colluding you'll be booted based on a total player vote.  Plus there are open communications so everyone has a mic.

We could start with a small test table 10 player 1 table match for a small amount to test it out, and then see if there is more interest

195  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Dwolla vs Paxum & MtGox vs Tradehill - for US bitcoiners on: August 10, 2011, 06:20:16 AM
Well you are not using paypal with a currency exchange... you are using it with a private user. Paypal and the bitcoin.eu never interact.  I generally send the user an ebook or something. Or ask for information etc.
It is on the grey area and I don't want to jeapordize my paypal account because I do a lot of business with it for audio video work world wide  and it's been a godsend.  That's why I am looking on how to get in on the exchanges.

I guess a check is best but then you have to wait and wait. Wire transfers cost $50 and don't seem to be any faster. Why oh why are wire transfers not instant from your bank to them? Makes no sense. Paxum seems very shifty and want so much information and who are they? Yeah let me give you a retina and ass scan while I'm at it.

Thanks for the tips though. Please others chime in with how you work it.

196  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 5870X2 open box on newegg, someone will love this bad boy =) on: August 10, 2011, 06:08:26 AM
By the love of the Thrice Great Okapi? WHY would you spend $790 for a card that gets a little over 400 mhash? Please explain the insanity?

Two 5830s beat it by a long shot in power and money

EDIT... ok just saw it'a an x2.. still.... too expensive
197  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Dwolla vs Paxum & MtGox vs Tradehill - for US bitcoiners on: August 10, 2011, 05:28:19 AM
I am having a hard time figuring out which is the best course of action for US based bitcoin users who want to partake in buying and selling them.  I have done some small trading on https://bitmarket.eu which has been fairly successful and it seems they always carry a higher value due to the fact that they in certain instances allow for paypal which is the fastest method, and since you are using paypal privately with other users for any service you are not technically violating paypal terms. This is I suppose what fuels the higher prices.

I have wanted to get on one of the more major trading sites or several of them but Tradehill forces U.S. users to only use paxum which I didn't like the looks of at all nor the ridiculous fees.  I am not fond of going to MtGox either as I'm not sure how I feel about the whole hack/rollback scenario.  Some say it increased their security but who knows... and how can they just 'rollback' prices I though once bitcoin blocks go they go?  But anyway, I'm sure there are a billion other threads on that.

Currently what are U.S. users doing to get money in and out of USD?  It seems like an incredible pain in the boot with excessive fees and middlemen no matter how you go.

Dwolla looks like the only other option but I am hearing a lot of bashing on it as well.

Would just like to hear what some of your opinions are and your "workflow" for converting bitcoins to USD and USD to bitcoins.

For instance, I had some extra funds laying around and I wanted to buy a bunch of coins when it hit the recent low, but there was no way for me to do it because of all the delays.. middle men.. and only dwolla or paxum.  Or does Mt Gox take direct bank wires in and out?  Is that safe?  How do American banks respond? How do they respond to dwolla?  Paxum looks a bit too creepy for me.

Experiences and workflow, and some sample amounts of trades and fees would be greatly appreciated.

198  Economy / Services / Re: Looking for a dj mix intro. on: August 10, 2011, 05:15:49 AM
clever mind = talent...  but with software only you're only going to be remixing someone else's stuff, never getting your own original sound, voice, or instrument into the mix.   You would be limited to having some electronic voice speak what you want to say which has already been done xthousands amounts of times.
Voice over talent people get paid well because they can get what you want.  If you have a good voice, sure, do it yourself, if not, hire someone.

199  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Tradehill or MtGox on: August 10, 2011, 04:59:29 AM
I have been pretty happy with my 3 cash outs at tradehill. That was before the dwolla incident anyway. When I needed help logging in (signed up a long time ago, but didn't use the account for a few months) they were quick to help me retrieve my username/password via email and quite courteous.

I don't know about the Dwolla incident I'll have to check into it.

So are you saying you like paxum? Because it looks shady, expensive, and like they want ENTIRELY too much information for some company that I have no clue about.

200  Economy / Services / Re: Looking for a dj mix intro. on: August 10, 2011, 04:44:43 AM
It's done with high end mics, high end preamps, high end a/d and d/a convertors and finally high end mixing and mastering software and compression.

Then of course there is the talent of the person making it.

You could have the most expensive equipment in the world, but it's useless without talent & experience.
