181  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano X Firmware 2.2.3 Is it secure to update? on: March 09, 2024, 12:40:49 AM
Hello Ledger user!
How many of you update latest Ledger Nano X firmware ver. 2.2.3 ? I have been reading lots of negative comment about 2.2.3 firmware. I heard that new firmware allows to export private key. Is it safe to update now?
It's called Ledger Recover functionality, which they announced in 2.2.3 releases, but since the code is closed source and Ledger lied several times, it is not possible to trust the possibility of such a feature being available in older versions or whether Ledger has access to an encrypted copy of the private key.

Not updating the firmware is not a good thing because at some point in the future you will be forced to do that. so far no loss of any coins has been reported, so thinking about purchasing a new HW may be a suitable option, if your plan to buy Bitcoin only then https://foundationdevices.com/passport/ is a good option and you can make comparisons between HWs using https://thebitcoinhole.com/ or ask here.
182  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: List of sites that Accept Bitcoin Payments on: March 09, 2024, 12:21:57 AM
I do not like the pay to Upvote concept, as each satoshi equals 1 vote, website design is elegant, and if there is a better way to prevent tampering with Upvote, it will be a good service, especially since you can log in using your Lightning wallet.

How will you prevent abuse from competitors where all it takes is 1 satoshi to Downvote.
I looked at the list of VPNs and they are good, but adding the option to arrange services in terms of price or privacy would be good, in addition to votes https://spend-sats.com/spendbitcoin/vpn/
https://camisatoshi.com/ was accidentally added to the HWs section
183  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Crypto news sources on: March 08, 2024, 02:27:13 AM
There are no real sources for cryptocurrency news. There are hundreds of sites that repeat, quote, or even steal content from other sites. Even reliable sites like Cointelgraph and Coindesk do not verify their sources, so it is easy to find that a rumor is repeated for several days.
The best you can do is to search for good accounts on Twitter that verify news before posting it, or research in depth the news that is circulating.

It appears that Uruguay has four hydroelectric power plants that have a generating capacity of about 1.5 gigawatts. The country  claims that 98% of its energy comes from renewable sources, so this type of claim is useful for those in public relations campaigns, not for those who want to continue making a profit from Bitcoin mining. .

Average electricity prices seem low but I don't know if they would get it at those prices.

185  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How can one make a Paper Wallet from a Descriptor Wallet ? on: March 08, 2024, 01:57:48 AM
Exporting the private key to a single address is one of the most differences in descriptor wallets due to BIP 32 unhardened derivation, but the best you can do is create a backup and then dump it into a JSON file. After getting the JSON file you can use JSON to compact QR code
186  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum 4.5.3 released on: March 08, 2024, 12:59:40 AM
You would have to coinjoin or mix your coins to again gain an advantage in the privacy race before you use the change from one transaction for a different one to a different party or use case. Adding the coins to a lightning channel is another solution to mask the history of your coins.
The privacy generated by using Submarine Swaps is a smart idea, but their primary purpose was to allow Lightning channels to be refilled via (on-chain) (off-chain) transactions, but since the transaction is a Hash Time Locked Contract (HTLC), the option of pumping fees using RBF And CPFP leads to replacing the secret with a new transaction, which makes it bad to use in the case of high Bitcoin fees, as you can wait for weeks before confirming the transaction, or you will always pay higher fees.

https://lucidtactics.com/blog/2022-02-27/how-lucid-tactics-leverages-the-bitcoin-protocol/

Quote
The first line of defense involves vigilant monitoring of the mempool, the repository of unconfirmed transactions. Lucid Tactics keeps a watchful eye, identifying and flagging any transactions that appear malicious – those unauthorized expenditures attempting to siphon funds from your wallet.
transactions in the mempool are signed transactions, and if there are any “unauthorized expenditures attempts” they will not pose a risk to your wallet (your private key) because it is not recorded on the mempool.

Quote
Rapid dissemination is crucial, especially considering that many nodes accept the first transaction spending a known Unspent Transaction Output (UTXO).
This information is incorrect, as the speed of broadcasting your transaction will not help your transaction to get included in the next block faster, as the sat/vByte fees are what determine the priority.

Quote
The Power of Full Replace-by-Fee (RBF)
Almost any good wallet supports RBF, and in the future, if all nodes implement full RBF, we will not need this option.
188  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum 4.5.3 released on: March 07, 2024, 02:11:59 AM
Electrum has today posted on their Twitter profile that the wallet allows users to send the change from their transactions to their lightning channels through a submarine swap.
This is the first time I've heard of "toxic change" but the idea that instead of returning the change to you, it can be used to fund your Lightning Network channels is a smart idea. The only problem is the inability to bump fees later, which means you are forced to overpaying fees for create submarine swap transaction or waiting until network fees being low which will result in limited usage.
189  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: NGRAVE hardware wallet? on: March 07, 2024, 01:56:16 AM
I did not find anything to prove that it is open source, but after reading @satscraper about how to generate the private key, I decided to read their article. At first, I did not like belittling other entropy to prove that you are the best and without evidence. They are lying, but let us move on to their idea, which is to obtain 16 hexadecimal characters (0–9, A-F) of the seed are not an additional feature that makes the generation of the private key truly random. Both multi-signature and passphrase addresses can be combined to avoid all the mentioned failure points.

with this high price, it is possible to obtain a better wallet that contains more than one secure element, and better resistance to physical attacks.
Ngrave tried to perfect its wallet but added more complexity without really boosting entropy.
190  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: database: all r,s,z from block 0 to actual on: March 06, 2024, 01:07:25 AM
is any intresting to get in one file all : BTC_addres, r,s,z, date_time_stump,public_key ?
blockchair.com provides this data at a price cheaper than 0.15 BTC, and if you buy a VPS with a paid blockchair.com package, the costs will definitely be much cheaper than 0.15 BTC.
If you analyze this data and extract something useful from it, as happens with Glassnode, its value may increase, but it will definitely not reach $9,000.
191  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: hito - New Hardware Wallet Open Source on: March 06, 2024, 12:22:06 AM
Funny thing is, near as I can tell, Hito's always been on pre-sale and you still can't actually buy one.  No clue if thats just how they operate, but seems to me they oughta update their site with expected shipping dates. Their website's delivery info is a year out of date!  Still promising a "second batch of beta-devices" in late May 2023?  Get real.  They should at least give a realistic timeline if they expect anyone to take them seriously.

hito claims to be a hardware wallet focused on NFTs, and if they were in the pre-sale stage in 2021 and 2022, when anything related to NFTs could be sold easily, then will definitely not be able to sell them in 2024.
I went through some archival of the site and found that in 2018 it was a Chinese site, and in late 2021 it was for sale for $1,495, so it appears that they bought the domain to make it appear that the service was older.

192  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Connection issue with my local full node on: March 06, 2024, 12:12:47 AM
Since you mentioned the full node and port 8333, I assume that you are talking about bitcoin core full node and not Electrum Personal server because 8333 is exposed by the full node connection, not by EPS.

  • Make sure you are using Electrum Personal Server and that it is running using CLI
Code:
netstat -a
Make sure port 50002 is open. [/li]
  • Delete cached cert file
  • Check the settings of the config.ini file for Electrum Personal Server and bitcon.conf for Bitcoin Core
  • Use local IP and port number 50002.

These steps should solve your problem, if not, paste the logs here.
193  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Please help - passport or jade ? on: March 05, 2024, 03:22:52 AM
Foundation Passport outperforms Blockstream Jade in many details. Passport Battery is better (1200mAh compared to 240mAh) and contains the Secure Element (ATECC608A) https://github.com/Foundation-Devices/passport-firmware/blob/main/SECURITY/SECURITY.md
Better integration with many wallets such as Wasabi Wallet, BTCPAY, in addition to being an Air-gapped wallet, which is the best if you only plan to use Bitcoin.

Blockstream Jade is better in terms of price and liquid-based tokens such as L-USDT and L-BTC.
194  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Mr.Charles Cryptocards on: March 05, 2024, 02:47:15 AM
Hello Yamane_Keto,

Our product range includes different versions of cards: the paper version at $3.25, made from rigid paper, the classic version at $32 in plastic, customizable with your own background images, the premium version at $85 in metal, also customizable with your own background images, and finally the platinum version at $99, made in metal with the addition of an NFC chip, and also customizable with your own background images. Additionally, our prices include all taxes and shipping costs, so you won't have any surprises when finalizing your order.

Prices are much better, but believe me, you will not be able to compete with local stores, because there is no shipping fees, can customize the design, and they have a variety of options for shapes. Your only advantage will be a high-quality printing with better materials.

Finally, our website has recently undergone a major update that offers exciting new features. You now have the option to input personalized text on your card, choose the font, and color that best suits you. We hope this increased customization will enable you to create unique Cryptocards tailored to your needs.
Updates are good but still:

  • I can't pay with Bitcoin, use open-source cryptocurrency payment processor like BTCPay Server https://btcpayserver.org/
  • In the Cryptocurrency Address field, I entered random words and they were accepted. add the ability to verify cryptocurrency address. The Bitcoin address must start with 1,3, bc1, for example.
  • Designs are limited and logo dimensions cannot be customized.
  • Providing free custom design service.
195  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: hito - New Hardware Wallet Open Source on: March 05, 2024, 02:04:20 AM
Cold wallet and NFC support is a bad combination. Hardware wallet owners usually prefer to reduce the parts that may connect to the Internet to a minimum.

They claim it's open source but the code hasn't been published, what's hosted at https://github.com/hito-xyz/docs is an explanation of how the wallet works.
Hito-xyz's side projects were forking MetaMask, so I assume that the wallet code is similar to MetaMask and has not been updated for several months, which means there may be software vulnerabilities.
You must download the latest firmware which is closed source https://fota.hito.xyz.

Hito wallet is closed source, firmware is closed source, and with $125 USD I wouldn't consider buying it, everything about this wallet is so bad.
196  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: seed and wallet validation on: March 05, 2024, 01:38:08 AM
Do you think it is necessary to do this with a battle tested wallet like electrum ?
You can do this if you are using a recent version of Electrum that was released hours ago, where the possibility of errors is higher, or when you are setting up cold storage for the first time, but in general and for stable versions of wallets like Electrum, you do not need that.
197  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Where do large mining companies send old ASICs? on: March 05, 2024, 01:10:53 AM
Mining companies buy electricity in volumes up to the consumption of a certain amount of power every month. These prices take into account seasonal price changes. I don’t think it’s possible to conclude such an agreement for several months. And it takes time to connect large capacities for mining.
I do not think that this is what is happening now. This data was correct when most of Bitcoin was mined in China, and at that time miners used to transport mining equipment to Sichuan during the rainy season, and when energy prices rose again, they returned to coal-based generation. Things have changed a lot and no. I wonder if there is a country that currently has this feature.

Or can they remold them or turn them to something that will be useful in the process of making a new latest asic miner?
Am I making sense or completely wrong?
ASIC is an Application-specific integrated circuit, and since it is manufactured for a specific purpose, its reuse for other purposes is limited. What can be done is to update it and improve its efficiency to a certain level. Some companies buy used mining equipment because it is cheaper and because they have access to low electricity and make a good profit.
Electricity prices greatly affect the profitability of these companies, and if you can get cheaper equipment and cheaper electricity, you will inevitably continue to work with equipment that is not profitable for most mining farms.
198  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Stupid newbie question, but can I make copies of my wallet? on: March 04, 2024, 02:09:13 AM
You can totally make as many copies of your wallet as you want.  I get why you might think it's handy to have a backup of your offline wallet.  But "cold" wallet on a device that's connected to the internet kinda misses the whole point of keeping one wallet offline and cold for safety.
This is not a good advice. Creating a number of unnecessary copies may lead you to lose one of them, whether it is wallet files or copies written on a piece of paper. Extra unnecessary copies mean a higher chance that someone else will find them, so do not create more unnecessary wallets.
Setting up Passphrases and keeping them in a separate place is a good idea if you live in a shared residence or create multi-sig wallets to avoid a central point of failure.
199  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: seed and wallet validation on: March 04, 2024, 01:22:12 AM
Since it is irreversible I guess we just need phycological confirmation. Even the big whales are observed doing this. People operating those balances cannot be noobs about how wallets or bitcoin works  but they still do it

You do not need to test the wallet seed with a small amount, what you need is to verify the deposit address several times. big whales often does that to test the watchonly wallet, where the cold storage is set up separately and watchonly wallet is managed in an independent device, so the system is tested with a small amount to ensure that all was set up correctly.

will find such cases in some cold storage addresses that contain thousands of bitcoins.
200  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: How do you cool your Farm? on: March 04, 2024, 12:58:43 AM
Cooling the farm is considered one of the basics of design, and depending on the design, the dimensions of the farm, the target temperature, and the cooling method, you will not get an answer to such a question. Even if mining farms publish their designs, they will be specific and not general.

I don’t understand how to deal with the problem of additional humidity later. And I can’t imagine how this system can be used in small containers. The cooling system should be as simple and cheap as possible to save money on maintenance.

Design varies depending on the target, but it is possible to reduce the temperature to more than 15 °C with reasonable humidity levels.
