181  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A day in the life of a pirate. on: May 31, 2012, 12:08:19 AM
When you sell trade Bitcoins do you always ask every buyer trader what they are going to use them for?

I don't like those words. Smiley

Pirate, here's a serious question. Even though you are not a corporation like BitInstant or MtGox, doesn't what you do still fall under AML laws? As far as I know, AML laws state that you are not allowed to facilitate the laundering of money. Strictly speaking, converting cash to bitcoins can be a form of money laundering since your clients are converting cash (possibly gained from illegal transactions) to clean bitcoins. As an individual and not a corporation, can you really just say that you are not aware of any illegal activity and that you are just trading bitcoins for profit?

BitInstant, as far as I know, doesn't exchange BTC for USD but USD for BTC. MTGOX does both. There is a difference and it's big.

BitInstant doesn't exchange anything at all. They just move USD into the exchanges.

Yes, it's way better having to read too much and being surprised by sudden changes than being completely in the dark without having a clue about what's happening. I really appreciate openness on everything.
183  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] BDK IPO, Monthly Profit Split from Operations -- *Critical Updates* on: May 30, 2012, 07:06:49 PM
Just to be a real pain in the arse, but in the spirit of a) your openness and b) the concerns regarding the security of btc-related ventures, would you consider making your exchange source available (say, on github) for review and possible collaboration?

That would be really nice, almost a must. And don't forget to take a look into Open Transactions as a possible backend, or at least as a great inspiration for functionality and features.

Any news about i0coin?
185  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] MORE Pirate Pass Through Bonds! on: May 30, 2012, 04:21:54 PM
When will these be sold? Maybe it is not yet 24 hours?

They're sold on Friday. The decision won't be made until Thursday.
186  Economy / Securities / Re: (TyGrr) TyGrr-Bot ~automated arbitrage trading system~ on: May 29, 2012, 11:01:37 PM
Still a consolation prize of 50BTC this week. Sad
Would you consider attaching your bot to more smaller exchanges, since their price might be more volatile? Thanks.
Also, any news on other currencies than USD/BTC?

bot has been working and we are on all of the exchanges. we just need some movement... also i am in tlaks with a large investor to try to convert some of the tygrr-bot bonds into something else, this will significantly increase the dividend potential if this works out.

i will keep you updated.

thanks

No dividends nor updates?
187  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] BDK IPO, Monthly Profit Split from Operations -- Next Offering: June 2nd on: May 29, 2012, 08:33:21 PM
For now, we're discussing selling a stake in Hermes (or some type of equity swap) to get the securities transfer feature implemented on GLBSE and our securities relisted. There is room for both of our exchanges to thrive, and we'd both have a niche.

Yes, please. Try as hard as you can to work it out in a civilized way. There's room for a lot of Stock Exchanges, and even there's really a need for them. Competing is good. Friendly competing would be just awesome. And on this community this would be absolutely possible.

Think even on work some more things together. It would be nice that our assets won't be exclusively dependent on a unique platform. Think about working out some compatibility layers between all the exchanges such that the same securities can be listed on all of them, on a compatible way. You could then give freedom to the users to manage their assets on the platform they feel more comfortable with, and you'll just be competing on offering different frontends with unique features and costs structures.

That would make the competition productive for everybody, incrementing the efficiency of everybody's work.
188  Economy / Auctions / Re: Get a BFL Single without the long wait! (Falling Price Auction - No Min) on: May 28, 2012, 02:24:26 PM
Ah, I'm paying $.07/KWH so I'm not quite at the stage of having FPGAs/BFLs being cost effective. The only reason I would want one, is because my house is quite hot, and I can't mine because of it. My house hits 90 degrees pretty frequently, and is at 86-88 at all times, so I don't want to add the extra heat. If I found a good deal on a lot of mining equipment, Id probably rent a building just to run them.

I'm planning to build a small green data center (open source, based on opencompute.org project), powered entirely by a small-hydro within the property, in a huge farm in Brazil... So, no more electric bills on this site.

I think that just rent another place for me, isn't enough...

The business plan draft is my hands! I only need the initial investment to buy the land and the small-hydro... I'm sure I'll be able to do that!

Nice plan. I'm thinking about doing something like this on Argentina. But with wind energy instead of hydro...

Good luck!

I just switched Cognitive over to this pool and so far everything is looking good.

I'm using this because the Cognitive host machine is barely powerful enough to host 18 x6500s, and definitely wouldn't keep up if we added P2Pool into the mix.

Thanks for this service!

Nice that Cognitive will be using p2pool!

I may buy some shares, then...
190  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [Payout Updates] Bitcoinica site is taken offline for security investigation on: May 28, 2012, 01:07:20 PM
That's not an option for me. I live in Poland and realizing cheques would be MUCH pain to me. I once tried to do this with Google Adsense cheque, before they started to sending international wires. It took TWO freakin' months to complete. Not everyone's live in the US you know. MtGox reedem codes for USDs and Bitcoin transfers for BTCs please.

+1.

IMHO returning funds should be realized ONLY through mtgox codes. I'm very confident that we need a trusted third party (as an intermediary)  in this process.

Why? Maybe some people doesn't even have an mtgox account. Why should they have to take one to be payed?

Anyway, this would have to be addressed on a case by case basis. As long as they found reliable the information obtained, they will figure what's the best way to pay, maybe just asking to the payee...

Hi! I've been mining here for a while.

I want to experiment with Litecoin mining as my CPU is not used at night. I have Athlon x3 455 and if I'm mining on all 3 cores it seem to drastically affect my GPU mining.
While using 2 or only 1 core it is OK. Miners: CGminer and pooler's for Litecoin.

Is that normal or I'm doing something wrong?

Thanks.

Have you tried to renice minerd to 19 when using the 3 cores?

Do you mean pooler's miner flags or process priority? Because I'm running it with no flags and at lowest priority. Forgot to mention, I'm using Windows 7 64.
Forgive my noobness...

I meant lowest process priority. Thought you were on some *nix OS...

So, maybe you'll just have to leave that core free to handle the other tasks...

Or try some *nix OS...

193  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Argentina, on the verge of a new currency collapse on: May 27, 2012, 04:12:45 PM
Extra complexity is not "free", it comes in at massive cost.

Yes, I'm well aware of it. Thanks for the advise, anyway. It's really appreciated.  Wink

As is, Bitcoin is too complicated for most people to get their head around. Having so many elements at play (AR$, US$, mining on either, clients for either, etc) and needing to distinguish between two cryptocurrencies... I can only imagine it would make a lot of people simply desist, as it's something they won't understand, and it's wise to stay away from something you don't understand particularly when money is involved. That's not even considering the whole extra point of failure it adds, the difficulties bootstrapping the currency (51% attack much more likely on a small, new currency), the mess with clients and websites, etc...

If anything anytime comes out of this, the idea is that it will be something that make things simpler for the people who can't understand bitcoin and everything related. If we can achieve that, great. If we can't, at least we tried...

Yes, it won't be easy...

Imagine a security hole is found in your fork, are you taking responsibility for it? Because you are not even anonymous, and Argentinian people are not particularly peaceful when they lose money.

I'm taking responsibility for everything I do. That's why I don't even need to be anonymous.

I read the second part and as a software engineer I can only see a nightmarish scenario there. Extra complexity being thrown around as nothing happened. Every single addition you mention there is a gargantuan task on its own. As big as Bitcoin itself, that's actually struggling to finish implementing the original plans as we speak, after years being scrutinised by many people. It feels like when my cousin tells me about this idea for a game and comes with something even the biggest studios in the world wouldn't dare to try.

Yes, maybe you're right and it won't ever advance a little bit... I haven't even touched the project for about 6 month now, and I hasn't even called for developers because I still don't know if this is the way to go. But well, we'll see... If at any time we see that this is the only way to go, at least some work is already done...
194  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Argentina, on the verge of a new currency collapse on: May 27, 2012, 04:00:42 PM
So exchanges are needed - but how would one do that?
I have the same problem in my country - there are no bitcoins to be had, so difficult to get any business going using it. But starting an exchange means selling bitcoin for the local fiat - why would one do such a thing, if one sees the ARS dropping and BTC rising? If you're fan enough of bitcoin to set up an exchange, you're probably also more keen on keeping BTC than ARS anyway.
Especially if your only way of getting those bitcoins are to convert ARS to USD illegally, then exporting those USD illegally to an exchange where you can buy the BTC you need to sell.
I'm not criticizing, I'm genuinely curious, because I wanted to set one up locally (at a small scale) to help get bitcoin going, but I just don't see how.

Where are you from?

It's been more than a month now. Have they released the funds?

I see that bitcoin is still enabled to withdraw funds, but not to add. Anyway, there's not a lot of informations about it...

weird, last couple of days I keep losing the edit button on here, it's not showing atm & neither is the delete post one  Huh

You can't edit nor delete posts on the Auctions subforum, so you can't change nor remove your offerings.

Can anybody involved setup a communication thread where we can have some information without so much noise?

Site note:

You can safely delete Bitcoinica from your Google Authenticator app.

The GA keys were stored in plain text, so we can't use it as an authentication method. In OTP authentication, we have to use the same key that was added to your smartphone to verify your OTP.
'

zhou, is there any way to get updated information on the progression of these claims without having to sift through this forum thread every few hours?

Please?

This thread has some fun, I can't deny it. Is nice to read it sometimes. But it would be better if you start something like Bitcoinica Claim Process, or something alike, more focused on updates for those trying to know how everything's going, don't you think?

Crap, it looks like we missed 2 blocks while we had a corrupt blockchain.

Supposedly the payout should be there anyway. This is PPLNS...
