182  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: bitcoin 0.62, 100% CPU load and stops working, possible DOS attack. on: June 24, 2012, 07:49:37 PM
The command -upgradewallet fixed the problem it now works fine with 0.63RC1.

What is strange is I thought the wallet update automatically as this used to be the case for older bitcoin clients.

When I used the command -upgradewallet, I am no longer getting the db error.

What is very strange is that before things broke it was running fine on 0.62, then when I got a clean block chain is when I started to get the db error on new bitcoin versions,
but now that I ran -upgradewallet it fixed the db problem with the new bitcoin versions and everything appears to be running fine.

Thanks for the help, both the link provided, and the recommendation to run  -upgradewallet helped.

183  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: bitcoin 0.62, 100% CPU load and stops working, possible DOS attack. on: June 24, 2012, 01:32:27 PM
Thanks for the link it helped solve the problem, one of the comments was to use an older bitcoin client which it worked, the other comment to use a clean block chain which works only with the older bitcoin client which the newer bitcoin client there is the error about the db.

Bitcoind 0.53 reads the wallet fine and it is now working fine.

It must have been a change in the way 0.62 reads the wallet most likely a bug.
0.63RC1 has the same problem.

At this point I have 2 options, transfer the bitcoins to a new wallet and then use 0.63RC1 or 0.62 with a new wallet or continue to use 0.53 which seems to work fine with the existing wallet.

Thanks, this problem has been solved.

184  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: bitcoin 0.62, 100% CPU load and stops working, possible DOS attack. on: June 24, 2012, 04:29:27 AM
update.
After a fresh block chain and fresh new wallter bitcoind 0.63RC1 seems to run fine, however as soon as I load my old wallet I get a db error:

# bitcoind -server -daemon
bitcoin server starting
[root@vpn3000 .bitcoin]# terminate called after throwing an instance of 'DbRunRecoveryException'
what():  DbEnv::txn_checkpoint: DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery

and on the debug log:

dbenv.open LogDir=/root/.bitcoin/database ErrorFile=/root/.bitcoin/db.log

Verifying last 2500 blocks at level 1
 block index           13996ms
Loading wallet...

The error recommends to " run database recovery", how does one run database recovery on bitcoind.
The block chain is fresh, recently downloaded, it seems that is the wallet causing the problem.
If I use the new empty wallet everything works fine.

Note: Before I downloaded the fresh block chain, I was not getting an error, I  was getting a 100% load on bitcoind
and bitcoind was unresponsive, so downloading a fresh blockchain helped somehow.

How can the wallet get corrupted?

After testing with bitcoind 0.62 I have the same error.

here is the debug.log with 0.62
Bitcoin version vCLIENT_VERSION_MAJOR.CLIENT_VERSION_MINOR.CLIENT_VERSION_REVISION.CLIENT_VERSI ON_BUILD-g8ff1873-beta ()

and here is the exact error with 0.62:
# bitcoind -server -daemon
bitcoin server starting
[root@vpn3000 sbin]# terminate called after throwing an instance of 'DbRunRecoveryException'
what():  DbEnv::txn_checkpoint: DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery

Any recommendations on how to repair the wallet?

185  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: bitcoin 0.62, 100% CPU load and stops working, possible DOS attack. on: June 23, 2012, 11:51:23 PM
OS Centos 5.5 but compiled statically on Debian 6.0 (will not compile on Centos 5.5).

I am starting clean, backed up everything, and starting downloading a fresh block chain.

I am will give bitcoind 0.63RC1 a try and report back.

The debug.log before starting clean was like this, this is the end of the log, the log file is huge over 82000 lines long:
Not sure to what version this log belongs to since, I tested 3 version of bitcoind 0.53, 0,62, and 0.63RC1, after I started having this problem.

It looks like like a network problem, but the network is fine.

bitcoind uses a huge CPU load, and becomes unresponsive.

The very strange thing , I tested version 0.53 and same problem was happening.
a while back I was using 0.53, and then 0.62 without problems, and then about a day ago suddenly I start having problems.

In a few hours I will report back, after a fresh  block chain has been downloaded, and I will test 0.62. and 0.63RC1.

186  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / bitcoin 0.62, 100% CPU load and stops working, possible DOS attack. on: June 23, 2012, 01:49:41 AM
Hi I am having an strange problem since about 3AM today.

I have been running the bitcoind 0.62 just fine for several weeks, and before that 0.53.

However recently the bitcoind started having a 100%  load and it stops working, if I kill  the daemon, the stop command will not work when at 100% load, and restart the daemon a few minutes later after killing it. it will work fine for a very short time, and then the load will be 100% again.

Since it was working fine for a long time, and it works fine when I run it at home, I am thinking of maybe a possible DOS attack.

Any recommendations on what the problem could be, or what to do.

The problem also happens with version 0.53 which used to work fine.

187  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: new mining pool. bitcoinmoneda.com on: June 20, 2012, 06:15:25 AM
Hi,
The pool has been updated to version 3.

In regard the comments, I was speaking in general terms, not pointing fingers at anyone, if I did, it was not intended.
It is true that a vps can be faster than a server running directly on the OS, however on average it is not, what I mean is that on OS running directly on the machine talks to the hardware though the OS, however if a VPS is running there is an extra layer of software, so if we have 2 identical  machines the one running on a VPS will run slower than the one that is not by the simple fact that more instructions are needed for the machine on the VPS to reach the OS, versus the machine running without the VPS, also less resources will be available to the OS running the VPS, since some of those resources will be taken by the OS running on the machine.

If we have the particular case of a machine with lots of resources running a vps, vs a machine limited in resources, in that case is clear that the vps will be faster.

For example an application, this is more or less how  the communication takes places:
application --> OS --> hardware
on a vps
application --> OS on the VPS --> OS on the machine -- > hardware

of course you could have:
application --> hardware
where the os is bypassed, but this is usually not the case, since the application would not be very portable.

The nice thing about a VPS it is that is very portable, and you could easily move them to another platform as long as the VPS is supported under that platform.
Don't take me wrong the idea of a VPS is very good, and very useful, and VPS are great for many things, but on identical hardware the VPS will be slower than the non VPS machine.

VPS technology has improved a lot, so the difference in speed might not be as big as  it once was, one of the very first implementations not a VPS but a software machine emulator was bosch (same concept) before vmware became popular, bosch ran great and it did not depend on the platform, and it would run anywhere since it did not depend on the architecture, but it was extremely slow.

Anyway can I connect to P2pool using BAMT? Anybody done it yet?

yes it is possible with my pool which is a node of p2pool.

190  Bitcoin / Pools / new mining pool. bitcoinmoneda.com on: June 17, 2012, 02:05:46 AM
Hi,

Here I have the great pleasure to announce a new mining pool http://www.bitcoinmoneda.com

Advantages of Bitcoinmoneda.com
part of p2pool.
No need to run you own pool.
No need to run your own bitcoind daemon.
No need to create an account.
Runs on bare metal, that is a physical server unlike a vps which runs on a virtual machine.
By running on a physical server you reduce the downtime and increase performance, therefore higher profits.
Good uptime.
2 to 4 blocks found per day on average.
Transactions fees are shared among the miners.
Reward type:    PPLNS
works with bamt.
fees of only 2% to maintain the server and related expenses.

here is a configuration example for phoenix.
phoenix.py -u http://your bitcoin address:anything:9332/ -k phatk2 DEVICE=0 AGGRESSION=10 -q 2 WORKSIZE=128 BFI_INT VECTORS

Simple to use, no need to create an account, just use your bitcoin address as your user name, and it is simple as that.

The most polular  bitcoin mining servers are heavily overloaded, and the others are usually on vps to keep costs down, but usually if you consider the downtime and the efficiency lost
it is best that the server is not on a vps, since most vps are overloaded, as such it is best to have a good distribution of the mining servers on physical machines, and the lesser the load the best the performance of the server, the downside of a real server is that it costs a lot more to operate.

If anyone want to give it a try go ahead, and report on this forum is your profits went up or not.

use your favorite miner, use recent version some old versions do not work, and for user name use  your bitcoind in which you want to receive payment, for password use anything.
phoenix
cgminer
ufasoft
Poclbm
DiabloMiner
just use recent versions of any of the miners above for good performance.

Thanks, and enjoy.

191  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: 840 MHash on 5970 - Good or Bad? on: June 14, 2012, 06:20:59 PM
with such a high temperature you risk burning the core that is at the rear of the card since that one gets hotter then the first one in the case of the 5970s.
Anything over 100C you risk burning the card.
I would not ran the card above 95C.

The 5970s can be overclocked safely only if you have it in  a room with cool air.
It is possible to get over 900 Mhash/s with water cooling, however very large radiators will be needed to keep the water cool.

In a hot room  and using air cooling, the card will get about 640 Mhz since it will not be possible to overclock without risk of overheating it.

The diff in temperate between the cores is about 14C, which means the outer core has a much higher risk of overheating.

I the case of the hd5970 it can be highly overclocked using water cooling, it is probably the fastest video card on the market when using water cooling, however
water cooling does not come cheap, be ready to expend over $400 for a good water cooling system. $150 water block video card, $100 water pump, $150 radiator, $50 fittings, heat paste, hoses, fans, heat pads, etc ($50 water temp monitoring), cpu block $50 to $100, etc.

With water cooling the temperatures drop between 60 to 70C and can be dropped even more when using very large radiators, which aircooling at a room at 25C the hottest core will be at about 80C without overclocking, which leaves a little room for overclocking, however at a room temperature of 40C there is absolutely no room to overclock since at stock speeds you will be reaching 100C which can destroy your card.

with water cooling to can ran the card over 50% stock speed, as long as water is kept cool, you do that with air cooling and the card will be destroyed. some may argue that it has a safety feature that when overheated the card automatically shuts down and it is true, however every time the card shutdowns due to an overheat you are taking a high risk, after so many emergency shutdowns one will be a permanent shutdown, and that is a risk you have to avoid.

My arrived recently great magazine.
193  Economy / Goods / Re: $$ONLY FOR THE BTC RICH$$ on: May 30, 2012, 04:15:31 AM
Shipping is expensive, so I'm not especially interested in tangible goods unless they are locally hard to find (clothing/shoes for vegans, someone please do this), interesting (geeky gadgets? gifts?) or cheap (I sometimes buy computer hardware for BTC). I usually spend BTC on intangible goods, and I wish there were more things I can do online with Bitcoin. Bitcointorrentz is an interesting service for example. And I don't see nearly enough VPS and VoIP providers accepting Bitcoin.

The reason there are not a lot of VOIP providers is quite simply, it takes a lot of investment in time to implement a process in which payments can be made, most customers what everything in real time that means they do not want to wait, and therefore to process payments manually does not work, most bitcoin users use VOIP services from major players, not the small guys ironically it is the small guys that offer VOIP services for the tiny bitcoin market, the large VOIP vendors do not care about the success or failure of Bitcoin, nevertheless most bitcoin buyers prefer the big guys.

I know this for a fact, I ran a bitcoin voip bussiness, and nearly all my customers are non bitcoin users, the reason I ran the business in Bitcoin is because it is a sound currency that I strongly believe in, and what to help to make it a success, and many of the small voip providers that accept Bitcoin also want it to be a success, nevertheless the average bitcoin user that uses VOIP is using voip from a major vendor that has absolutely no interest whatsoever in the Bitcoin economy.

If you do not believe major VOIP vendors do not care about Bitcoin, mane me one that cares, I can not think of a single one, all the ones that do care are all small players, some smaller than others but none at the level of the big guys, the same can bit said about other areas in the bitcoin economy.

About a month ago I implemented a shopping cart to allow to buy phone credit in bitcoins, well the shopping cart has almost 0 customers.

Since the market is tiny for VOIP in Bitcoins, and most users using the large players which do not support Bitcoin, I think the VOIP market is very large for the demand that exists in Bitcoins, if you do not believe me take a look in the trade section under Bitcoin businesses for voip a lot of the Bitcoin VOIP providers from a year ago are gone now and the reason is lack of market.

And this problem is not only for VOIP it is for all products, a lot of small sellers and very few buyers, if we want Bitcoin to be successful we have to prefer using businesses that accept Bitcoins, that has a price to be paid and that is limited choices and usually small businesses nevertheless it is what is needed, I personally try whenever possible to spend bitcoins within the bitcoin community.

In brief, what I am trying to suggest is that we must try for the Bitcoin economy to depend on its own, would it not be great if you could go to the supermarket and pay directly in Bitcoins, or go to a parts store and be able to pay in Bitcoins, for that to happen we must support vendors  that support bitcoins whenever possible and the market will grow, otherwise it will also grow but at a lot slower pace.

195  Economy / Services / resellers wanted for btcvoip.com on: May 23, 2012, 10:45:46 AM
Hi,
Re-sellers  wanted for voip business.

This is the way it will work, you will own your own customers for as long as you are a re-sellers, you will provide tech support for them, and help them with support tickets for your customers.

Every time one of your customers makes a purchase you will make a 20% profit over the sales price, for example if a customer makes a $50 purchase you make $10.

For resellers, I will want to id and know who are the resellers, but for end users you can be completely anonymous if you want to.

The reason resellers are needed, I have a fully functioning voip business, it has been fully functioning for a few years, however with a very small customer base, and to be honest I am very poor at marketing, I am sure a lot of you guys could get a larger customer base in probably a few months.

I hear a lot of people complaining that the can not buy phone service in bitcoins, but it is here and available, most of my customer are not bitcoin users, so promoting this business in the bitcoind world would be great.

for resellers you will need to buy credit so that you can sell credit, you can set your own website as you prefer, and from your site you will be able to create a link, whoever uses that link you make profit.

One thing I learned is that customers like everything fully automated, and everything is fully automated, the only thing that is a little awkward but works is the purchase of credit using bitcoins, that is because credit has to be purchased in a shopping cart which sells a voucher, this voucher represents credit that can be used in your account once the voucher is loaded.

I do not expect you to build a large customer base quickly, in fact it has taken me forever to build a small customer base, so your requirements for being a reseller will be low.

Some unique features that I offer, payment in bitcoins, support for IAX devices, shared DIDs (in addition to traditional DIDs) for those that want to save money, no monthly fees, credit does not expire, caller id service, android client for webcallback, webcallback for linking 2 numbers together, also for a limited time billing will be per second.

All payments will be handled in bitcoins, however you as a reseller can accept any type of payment from your customers, you will make the 20% comission even if they purchase credit directly from the web site.

Take a look at it www.btcvoip.com, or www.vpn3000.com
email me at sales@vpn3000.com

196  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: my upgrade issue to 6.2 on: May 15, 2012, 08:46:52 AM
looks like a damaged db.

to play it safe back up everything in .bitcoind directory, in practice it is my understanding that you only need to backup the wallet, but backing up everything is safe.

then start bitcoind in a fresh clean directory with the wallet and the config file, this will recreate the database and will download a fresh block chain, it will take several hours. But it will fix your problem.

That sometime happens when the server crashes and bitcoind is running.
197  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: A PHP digital bitcoin store on: May 15, 2012, 08:39:08 AM
The overall code is good, however it does have a few problems that are easy to fix.

Problem 1:
Let say buyer A chooses to purchase item 1, but  does not pay for it, well item 1 gets reserved for buyer A so that he/she can pay for it, now lets say we have another buyer B that tries to purchase the same item he will get a warning that the item is being purchased which is correct, but then the original buyer A gets the same message and no one can purchase the item now.

Problem 2:
Let say we have a buyer that gets a bitcoin address for each of the items in the cart by clicking on purchase, but never sends any bitcoins, now  none of the items are available anymore to anyone else.

When does it work:
It does work when a buyer makes the purchase and sends the bitcoin to the provided address and no one interferes with the purchase by trying to buyit.

How to fix:
add 2 extra fields to the goods database, one indicating that the item has been reserved for purchase by the buyer that generated the bitcoin address, and another field with a time field to expire the purchase if it does not get payed within a certain amount of time.
Also provide some anti spam mechanism to prevent a buyer from selecting everything, limit the amount of purchases until they get paid.

I will say the code is overall pretty good it just needs a little fixing, the design is nice and simple which is a good thing.

199  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: IVR interface to Bitcoin on: May 14, 2012, 11:38:48 AM
I think the IVR interface to Bitcoin is a good idea.
If you need a did to continue with your service, I can give you a free shared did, that way your service will be available to everyone from any where in the word at the same time avoiding long distance charges for the calling party. The only problem with shared dids is that the person dialing will need to enter an extension after the number, the good thing is that I can give you one for free, and the calling party saves on long distance.

The shared did you can map it to a phone number (costs money) or to your voip account (free).
Since you use asterisk, you can configure your voip account it your asterisk server.
And since I support IAX2, you can provide the service behind a firewall if you wish without any nat problems.

After you create the account just send me an email, and I will provide you with a shared did free of charge.
to create the account go here http://www.btcvoip.com
200  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / mt gox android client, download link needed. on: May 13, 2012, 08:57:31 AM
Could someone post here a download link for the mtgox android client.
I asked Mt.Gox what the license was for their android client, and they did not tell me, but they told me I was allowed to get it from other sources, so even though I am not aware of the license since I do not have the software and Mt.Gox will not telll me what license they are using, based on what they told me it is a license that allows distribution of the software by others.

I have the openmoko freerunner which is an open source phone and can run android, but not all parts of android are open source, being one of them the google market, so I am left out of google  market, I have access to other android market but I have only seen Mt. Gox android application on google market.
