Someone that is in desperate need of money will offer you a deal and when you decline they will sweeten the pot, and finally beg you to "buy" or "trade". They need the money and the biggest trust issue with them is the fact that they believe they will come through for you, but may fail, not due to intentional theft. Crooked scammers keep the deal moving, no matter what. If they lose steam, they lose the mark. They want you slightly confused, convinced you are not confused and they do not want you seeking advice or catching your breath. The desperate person has only one deal to offer, but the scammer may produce alternatives and changes to get you to bite. The scammers last move is to cease talking and drop the ball in your court, stating that their time is very limited. Someone that is interested in making a deal with honest intent, or trying to honestly help will try for a bit and then leave it to you. The difference in the end from the scammer is that they will leave the future open for you, letting you know that they are there anytime you change your mind, but that they cannot waste more time trying to convince you
No offense intended but you sound as if you were a scammer yourself And now you are sharing the secrets of the trade with us. Though I disagree that scammers are always keeping the deal moving, no matter what. Once I read some pretty scientific investigation into the matter (namely, into the so-called Nigerian Prince emails aimed at extorting money), and the conclusion was that the scammers drop communication instantly as soon as it becomes evident to them that their target won't bite since continuing would be a waste of time and effort for them Deisik, you're referring to the "419 scams" that were famous for originating in Nigeria - I think I also read the same research into it. Scammers are a lot more complex in operating than we give them credit for. The 419 scammers aren't much different from the ones here. Wittingly or not, they actually know the type of people most likely to get conned, and will only move the deal for as long as the targets fit the profile. As soon as it doesn't, they drop the target. The mistake we make is our underestimation of scammers. We liken them to be immature, below average in intelligence and uneducated. While it is true that a lot of their methods are unsophisticated and their language awkward, this in fact can be deliberate and helps ensure the right targets are attracted. And scammers who recognise our underestimation then give us what we want: maturity, intelligence and educated manners.

There is many reasons that can answer this question and mainly because : 1- there is no Mtgox 2- more users, more volume exchanged...
There is no MtGox? I haven't looked at the numbers but I'm confident that Coinbase has a larger if not equal user base than MtGox had, so they could pull something just like MtGox did, no? Or maybe because they're based in the US they wouldn't get away with it? Coinbase would definitely be able to pull something exactly like MtGox off and get away with it, despite being based in the US. I highly doubt any kind of investigation would be high-tech enough to prove that a hack was staged, nor would they be able to uncover a fake hack or digital heist. Also, I doubt a 2nd MtGox will have as strong or as lasting an impact on prices... I believe users and traders have learnt from MtGox.

I was just going to comment that the only reason I'd open an account at any bank, local or otherwise, would be to have some form of insurance on my deposit. But as it's in the poll answer, that's covered.
While my first option is to still securely store it in my own personal wallet, I suppose there are some benefits to having my coins insured against loss.

We might see some ups and downs in near future but I don't think bitcoin will fall below $500 anytime in next period. Growth of bitcoin is directly linked with the user base of bitcoin and the correlation between demand and supply is the single crucial element which determines price of the bitcoin. Bitcoin will eventually reach new milestones but with many ups and downs on the price chart.
I suppose the good thing about speculating low barriers is that even if those bottom limits are met, the pressure for upward pricing will be even greater. $500 would be such a bargain for newcomers to get a bit of coin and see it appreciate quickly. And there will be even more newcomers in 2017!

Just to note, the exchanges are not China's, they are merely China-based or Chinese.
Also, I do feel this has little to do with government intending to regulate crypto, this is quite a straightforward case of regulating trading. Not everything is a conspiracy against crypto.

My Filipino friends, why so eager for your own country? Let us celebrate ASEAN and acknowledge that it is rare even for a Southeast Asian category, happy to see that and have marked myself there - because truly Asia does not do justice to the continent and to the archipelagos that lie where we are.
I am Malaysian, and count one Indonesian and many from the Philippines in the 6 votes above.
Bitcoin was quite popular, but the 2 BTC ATMs installed near the capital are now defunct, so that speaks some volume. Otherwise, there are other alts upcoming and the Malaysians I know interested in crypto, aren't as much advocates as they are entrepreneurs looking for the next big thing. No harm of course.

Always happy to help out any form of learning and research... we all know what little we do about crypto from mainstream media and many of the "unsavoury elements" that unfairly stick out for bitcoin continue to persist. If I may comment, certain elements of your questioning also reflect this existing bias.
I hope your demographic sampling also takes note that users on this forum itself belong to certain specific target users. You may benefit with a posting in other language sections =). Good luck!

A little bit of a sell on the announcement, but actually a really decent way for someone to get through the trouble of learning how smart contracts and getting compensated for it. Still looks a little daunting for someone like me and it's not false modesty to say I need things said in layman terms!
OP says a year from 100%, so in reality this might be two years then?

You'd think that a project with such an old (relative in crypto terms that is) history and even a presence on trade platforms might be a little more discussed, but I actually only have seen MaidSafe in passing on this forum, though recently it was a top 10 on the list of highest-performing Alts for 2016, in terms of price/btc.
With all the millions referenced here, it's difficult to see why it hasn't taken off until now...

My vote is yes, and this is only specific to the "crypto gambling" community. It may not be as glamourous as dev communities or even trader communities, but I personally feel it has its place, however niche.
I dare say I am trying to slowly be part of existing communities otherwise interested in the proliferation and progress of crypto but I do not think I will properly be a useful member of such communities just yet. It's difficult also to see where that community is on this forum, if there is one at all.

This isn't a direct comment on the coin, but on the idea that distribution for the sole purpose of getting as many people as possible using it: I think the idea is great and the numbers behind it are sound. The one clear path for a coin to succeed is to have as many people using it, but not simply owning it. This coin and others need to explore a better method of gaining users other than just simply giving it away.
You want people to want to own it and use it, not so much just making money of it.
I liked Byteball's route, for example.

Hey, doge is pretty damn stable compared to a lot of other coins, and that's good for any currency. Right? It's definitely still alive and well, even if it isn't the most glamorous thing. People use it, unlike all the other turds.
I am a professed doge lover... the fun spirit of the coin still thrives and is very much alive. You can see this especially in casinos that use Doge. It is the choice coin for tips and giveaways... I have tens of thousands just from random tippers, even after giving tens of thousands away myself. It's still unique and it still recently gives to charitable causes. Moon it may never be, but it is here to stay for a long, long time.

I've had probably five or so posts deleted as well, and in self-moderated posts, so I can only assume that these posts were deleted because OP didn't like the comments (I don't believe I indulge in trolling much, but like most here, we can be overly cynical).
This all happened when I was newbie and junior member too, and hasn't happened since turning regular member... I'd not worry about it at all=)

When I was a newbie, my first coin was btc and my first alt was ETH. The very first faucets I visited gave me free dust but in varying denominations of satoshi, umBTC, gwei. Can be confusing but still use this site every now and then to find out exactly how much BTC is 300 gwei. Code: Name : Ether FundType : Browser Link : http://ether.fund/tool/converterDescription : Converts between various denominations of ETH and BTC

First of all, don't quite understand the title: how can volatility be equal? Secondly, do we really want bitcoin's volatility to be equal to fiat? And wait, if the value of btc is always measured against fiat anyway, then it would be impossible to equal unless we start pegging bitcoin to a currency basket, or a single currency.

Which Altcoins should I hold onto for yonks ? ![Grin](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/grin.gif) Yonks meaning ages or a very long time ![Wink](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/wink.gif) Thanks in advance ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif) For me it is a simple question of which coins are the easiest to gain regularly for free... and based on this I started collecting only btc, doge, ltc and eth. I still consider these my Big Four. Without a doubt I only hold bitcoin seriously, but I still collect the other 3 whenever it is convenient. Basically it just means I check a few faucets daily. Hardly anything, perhaps 5 cents from each alt weekly but for 2 minutes a day I don't feel they are an utter waste of time!

I am a newbie in trading and I'm wondering what Altcoin is promising this 2017?
I am sure best performing Crypto is already well known right now. Most likely will be one that reached bottom right now. And those that monitor that coin know well it will preform good in 2017. Here is list best performing coins in 2016, so you can taste what showing best performance is: Name: value in btc: value in $: value in btc: value in $: difference in $: difference in %: 01 Jan 2016 01 Jan 2016 01 Jan 2017 01 Jan 2017 in year 2016 in year 2016

Although I generally ignore altcoins, even I am surprised to see that I only recognised three coins in the top 20 of this list! It's slightly discouraging to see that most people understand "promising" as profitable. The sole deciding factor here is price, nothing else to distinguish these alts.

Good read, and no harm to repeat points as a way of constantly urging each of us to continuously promote and advocate for bitcoin.
To be honest, I don't quite understand why there would be market panic - the price surge was a bit sudden and it was bound for a correction.
I bit, therefore I am.

|
|
Just a matter of getting it out of the way but the term "sleeping giant" to me is still only applicable to bitcoin itself... but we can argue among the alts if we prefer...
I'm going to take a small plunge with this - any suggestion for a good place to get small orders?
Any known sites committed to accepting it yet?

These are, as Spoetnik mentions, people who were well-schooled in the traditional MLM ponzi methodology. There are actually only a handful right at the top who work on a series of MLM ventures at a time, running on a well-oiled machine that just moves along when a ponzi is found out or when it runs out of new members.
The ones who get caught are not part of the inner circle, unfortunately... the real puppet masters have not been caught and only leave when the new generation has been trained to take over.
