MtGox isn't Bitcoin.

If you don't like the dealer, you can still love the product.
1842  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is MtGox inflating the bubble? on: June 07, 2011, 11:35:06 PM
What bubble?   Cheesy
Just in the last hour, bitcoins appreciated from $18 to $23.60. If that's not a buying mania fueling a bubble, what is?

The most incredible form of money ever?
Possibly even more than gold.
1843  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The single most important issue for BitCoin today on: June 07, 2011, 11:17:36 PM
Nothing's gonna change until we see 0.000 in the GUI

This!

If my account is:
1 BTC;
1.0 BTC;
1.00000 BTC;

Which one gives the impression to have more of it?
The last one, as it shows we are supposed to look in the decimal zone.

Don't change the name, simply add some zeros in the GUI.
1844  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoins must be the new currency. on: June 07, 2011, 03:57:54 AM
Odd. Isn't the legal tender supposed to be accepted for all debts public and private?
1845  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Billboard! on: June 07, 2011, 03:46:11 AM

And that was so easy to send...

God I love Bitcoin!
1846  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Billboard! on: June 07, 2011, 01:29:02 AM

Donated a full Bitcoin... and now rocking with a new desktop wallpaper! Grin

Thank you so much for this Billboard!

I don't know where you are, but in Canada I've never paid any taxes on precious metal, even when they cross the border (and believe me, if there's something to tax, oh boy that's taxed!).
1848  Economy / Marketplace / Re: List of honest traders. on: June 07, 2011, 12:37:58 AM
+1 to TurdHurdur

Agreed on a price, sent the BTC immediately!
Fast and professional, highly recommended!
1849  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: [RFC] Responsibility of transaction fees on: June 05, 2011, 11:29:17 PM
Please keep in mind I do throw this idea with my ôôô so limited knowledge.
I'm sure this have been proposed already, but....

Couldn't the contract be used when you're not sure the transaction will ever proceed?

Contract example: if after 50 blocks the transaction isn't confirmed, it's considered canceled and it will never send the BTC to the receiver address.

If the client knows this rule, it will simply be able to re-spend the BTC after 50 blocks, no question asked.
If the first transaction was to ever be confirmed, but after the said 50 blocks, it simply would check the contract and not send the BTC.
1850  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Explaining Bitcoin to regular people on: June 05, 2011, 11:10:58 PM
I believe that one of the benefits of Bitcoins over traditional currencies is that it pushes you to actively find out what is it about. Traditional currencies are considered "given" and taken for granted. Maybe with a more concious population Greece, Ireland and US crisis wouldn't have happened at all.

Yeah dream on. History shows us that the vast majority of people are sheep who see only what's right in front of them and are very susceptible to trickery and fraud. If you are right and people could understand how the fiat money hurts them, they would have never given up the privilege to own real money in the first place. If and when Bitcoin will be used by these general types it won't be because they understand it like we early supporters do but because they see others use an trust it. And you can count on it.

+1

If someone doesn't already understand the difference between fiat and gold, don't bother.
1851  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is it safe to use Bitcoin for illicit transactions? on: June 05, 2011, 11:02:43 PM
As I understand it, the more BTCs in the mix, the better.

Is there an incentive to "lend" BTCs to this service, in order to guarantee a minimum?
1852  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I am pretty confident we are the new wealthy elite, gentlemen. on: June 05, 2011, 08:07:08 PM
This is incorrect because money ≠ utility.

True, commodity speculators are not adding or subtracting the commodity from the economy.

But they are adding utility to the economy by giving more people access to that commodity at a time when they desire it.

That is also a form of added wealth.
You're still talking about negative economics. At best speculation removes a negative rather than adds a positive.

An ideal system would not need any speculation therefore if you want to improve the system you should move it closer to the ideal state.

If I foresee a catastrophic famine and consequently buy loads and loads of grain, I am a speculator and I am:
- Increasing current price (diminishing current consumption, or at least making farming more attractive)
- Making more grain available for when the said famine happens, lowering its effect.

If it's not adding a positive, what is?

I'm starting to believe the year 2009 should be the new year 0.

Sure, you can see all the trade history.
For example, you can say he received 20BTC from account 1MwEJr2F2d3bfuvn4Pdx5PpsgkZZ3eyXRK.
However, if you don't know who's using this account, what can you do with this info?

1860  Economy / Marketplace / [15 BTC bounty] A tutorial for simple functions in Clojure (and BACnet) on: May 31, 2011, 12:29:41 AM
Here's the deal: I want to be able to create some input/output with some descriptions in BACnet. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BACnet)
For this, I want to use Clojure. My devices are located in my LAN (so any Ethernet implementation should work, but feel free to use IP if needed).

There's already some libraries written for BACnet, such as this one http://sourceforge.net/projects/bacnet4j/ in java (which, as I understand, should be easy to use with Clojure), and this one http://sourceforge.net/projects/bacnet/ in C.

So the goal is: I put an input in a Clojure function, it creates my input and I then can add a description.
However I'm pretty sure you don't have BACnet devices laying around, so a simple proof of concept from one function to another is sufficient.

What's the catch?
I'm awful.
This means I require a tutorial:
  • Start the project with Leiningen
  • How to include the existing library
  • How to find the required functions
  • Write the Clojure functions
  • Test them
  • Creating an independent .jar would be nice..

That's it.

I would like if you could use Emacs, but I left this as a choice.

I will post the accepted tutorial here, available for all. You can post it on your own blog if you want, although I would appreciate if you could say I financed it and put this Bitcoin address for any thanks: 1nZJ4JJTxwt4XZ7N39j3EHaVojBHMvZVK
