1861  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The name of Bitcoin on: October 23, 2014, 12:36:56 AM
The name bitcoin is good. If given a choice, I might have named it e-coin.
There are so many alts in place, people can just give their preferred name to an alt.  Grin

I wonder whether the smallest unit was named Satoshi when bitcoin started, or the name was proposed later as a tribute to Satoshi Nakamoto.
1862  Economy / Speculation / Re: Random thoughts on flash crashes on: October 23, 2014, 12:31:59 AM
The list can go on and on, including Morgan Stanley in 2004, Lehman Brothers in 2001. The question is, why flash crashes happen and how to avoid them?

This stuff seems interesting to me but I lack background, background that is not so easy to find.  Do you have good links for more basic questions: "What precisely is a flash crash?", "Why are they considered bad?", "Are they actually bad?".

If you have an outstanding buy order at ridiculously low levels and it gets filled in a flash crash, you wouldn't think that these crashes are bad, right?

Thanks to the bitcointalk admins for allowing Tor access. The peace of mind was worth the few mbits I paid to remove my "Tor evil" when I registered.

I didn't get this. You paid a few mbits?

Yes. I consistently use Tor. When I registered at bitcointalk, it said I couldn't use my account until I paid X satoshis to remove my "Tor evil."
I thought this phrase was funny, so I remembered it. I don't remember how much X was, but I think it was somewhere around a dollar's worth.

As people who use Tor can tell you, many sites will either make you constantly fill out CAPTCHAs or just block you entirely. I'm happy that
bitcointalk allows Tor users to participate at all.

That is strange.
It is just discouraging people from using tor.
And if you have a compulsive need to use tor (say to perform some illegal acts), you can still do it by paying a $?
1864  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Who uses "bits"? on: October 22, 2014, 02:01:47 AM
Milli-bitcoins and Micro-bitcoins are good enough units for me.  Smiley
1865  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Mintpal payouts on: October 22, 2014, 01:59:20 AM
Tough to see any payouts happening.

1866  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Banking Elite Meet in Washington To Discuss Bitcoin Threat on: October 22, 2014, 01:55:46 AM
Are this only rumor or real fact which is really happened? I doubt that banking Elite are interesting to bitcoin, they love so much traditional currency  Grin

It is not a rumour!
They did not meet to discuss bitcoins specifically, but bitcoin was one of the topics discussed at the annual members meet of  Institute of International Finance.

What about bitcoins destroyed in "Proof of Burn"?

1868  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why Should One Start With Bitcoin Right Now on: October 22, 2014, 01:45:30 AM
The earlier one gets started with Bitcoin, the better it is.
Right now, we seem to be an opportune moment, with the price more than 60% down from all time highs.  Smiley
1869  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Explaining Bitcoin in a Limerick on: October 21, 2014, 10:05:01 AM
Bitcoin is going to shoot to the moon
It is going to do that very soon
All the bear whales who try to push the price down
Will end up looking like digital clowns.
1870  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Unicef donations on: October 21, 2014, 10:00:48 AM

Do charities have to keep records about whom they receive money from?
Are anonymous donations restricted to a certain amount?

While UNICEF may be above doubt, there are a lot of charities which serve as fronts for politicians (or even terrorist organizations). Are charities in general allowed to receive large anonymous donations?

1871  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Just what is a FAIR fee to send a Bitcoin transaction? on: October 21, 2014, 09:54:48 AM

considering most bank transfers cost roughly €0.09, $0.05
Seriously?
In my country most bank transfers don't cost anything.
So, I stick with that also in Bitcoin. Miners get block reward, so I don't see why they should get transaction fees.

Banks have a lot of other avenues for earning income, apart from transaction fees.
As the block reward reduces over the years, transaction fees will become the main source of income for miners.

Grandma should have just used them to buy something she wanted.
There are a lot of options these days.  Smiley
1874  Economy / Gambling / Re: [ANN] BikiniDice is launched! on: October 20, 2014, 12:28:03 AM
Visited the site.
Apart from the 5 girls on the home page, is there anything else inside?  Grin
1875  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Just what is a FAIR fee to send a Bitcoin transaction? on: October 20, 2014, 12:25:48 AM
The total transaction fees has been on a declining trend.

I guess once the block reward halves, transaction fees will become more important.

1876  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Random 0.00001 BTC from Laxo Trade? on: October 20, 2014, 12:22:39 AM
Got a 1 mBTC, again.  Grin

1 mBTC? That is quite a bit... More than a transaction fee.  Smiley

I suppose they send the BTC accordingly to bitcointalk rank/post number.
I think it is more complex then that. I have seen a hero member post 4k+ addresses and each received a same sized input that a full member received for posting one address on the same thread. I would theorize that their algorithm takes into consideration something about the thread the address is posted on among other factors. I would be interested to see any specific research that anyone does regarding how the size of the "advertisement" is deteremined

I have received such payments to addresses I have certainly never publicized (except in the blockchain of course)

Then these payments are really random. Hope I receive a few of them soon.
1877  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Artwork sold for 35 BTC in Inside Bitcoins Tel Aviv on: October 20, 2014, 12:21:38 AM
The painting is real good, but 35 BTC is a lot of money.  Smiley
1878  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you USE your BTC? on: October 20, 2014, 12:19:06 AM
I used to use them alot but not anymore. I plan to save them for the next 20 years!

20 years is a very long time, it need an accurate prediction
to analyze the price of bitcoin for next 20 years Cheesy

You don't need an accurate prediction. You just need to get the trend right.  Grin
1879  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: My Bitcoin Collection on: October 20, 2014, 12:18:16 AM
30 btc is a significant sum.
Hold it for a few years and reap the benefits.  Smiley
1880  Economy / Economics / Re: (The Fed) Federal Reserve Inc. = 100 Years of Failure on: October 19, 2014, 02:32:49 PM
In the great words of Ron Paul end the fed.

It's enough with letting everyone use whatever currency they want. So people will start using better money, like gold, silver or bitcoins, and nobody will use USD, so it doesn't matter what the FED does. The problem is the government.

If you use gold, silver or bitcoins, you had better keep a log with all your transactions. You never know when the IRS might come calling.  Smiley
