18661  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ATTN] Clarification of Mt Gox Compromised Accounts and Major Bitcoin Sell-Off on: July 05, 2011, 01:26:55 PM

if i have to explain why a financial inst or gov't would want to drive down the price of btc to you heaven help you.

Well, heaven help me then.  Perhaps you could be my angel and tell me what you mean.  Do these individuals have a target price in mind?  Or do you mean they just want to break it?  Breaking the network is not the same as driving the price down.  Some of the institutions you mention want to drive the value of the dollar down.  Is that for the same reason?  Would a lower rate of USD per BTC make it easier for the number of real BTC transactions to grow?  Somehow I feel (guessing) you are referring to currency monopolists who don't want to see any competition, but a lower price per BTC probably wouldn't make much difference to them.  Anyway, I don't think that's what happened to MtGox in this instance.

i apologize for being so dramatic.

i am referring to fiat currency monopolists whose franchise would be threatened if not taken down by btc.  i think they understand that a continually rising price of btc would attract significant attention (as it did on the way to 30) and encourages more bullish behavior and growth of a btc economy.

yes its a conspiratorial theory but many ppl here on this forum can easily relate.

again, i ask the same question, why wouldn't the hacker just have changed the withdrawal limit to unlimited and just stolen all the wallet keys asap?  he instead ignored the wallet, and manipulated the DB to sell the price down to 0 over a 30 min time period risking potential intervention by Mark.  i think Kevin Day and others who were able to take money out are just red herrings.
18662  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: what's your stop loss on: July 04, 2011, 09:19:19 PM
i for one am buying on the way down.
18663  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: what's your stop loss on: July 04, 2011, 09:18:45 PM
then what's your guys' target price?

No idea... trying to "name the correct price" on something so new, revolutionary, volatile, and downright crazy is a fool's errand. Or in other words, target price is between $0.10 and $10,000 per coin. SO many variables, and the timeframe for every variable is also a variable.

I'm buying them because I believe in the concept, and in the market need for frictionless free-market money. I have no idea what the right price is, but I know these are wildly valuable to humanity - we'll see if humanity recognizes this =)

well said.
18664  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: GLBSE's latest updates (an early Christmas present for non-techies) on: July 04, 2011, 07:38:36 PM
i too see different id.
DISHWARA acc key is 762ea30xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxb6a1ce

But i see 47df92xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx583328c97 in top.

same for other acc also. the key i got from dos mode is different than , key displayed on acc in web client.

i see the exact same user id:   "But i see 47df92xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx583328c97 in top. "
18665  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: GLBSE's latest updates (an early Christmas present for non-techies) on: July 04, 2011, 07:33:54 PM
ok, accessing just fine.  nice layout.

why does my user id display differently in the GUI than from what i have stored locally?

I've no idea, is it a problem?
I mean is it the same id displayed differently (bigger text?) or a different id?

its totally different.

not a problem except that when i thought i lost my user id last week, i hunted down a Google page cache of GLBSE that had the changed (incorrect) user id in it.  used in combination with my private key, i couldn't open my acct and i freaked out until i realized that it wasn't the real user id.

18668  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Ubuntu Live CD memory problem on: July 04, 2011, 06:03:35 PM
i am getting low memory warnings while downloading complete blockchain with client.  can someone suggest a way to allocate a larger portion to a session?
18669  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: GLBSE's latest updates (an early Christmas present for non-techies) on: July 04, 2011, 05:47:23 PM
Client's updated, fixed a few issues with withdrawls and other things.

SSL error is because it's a self signed cert, you can click through without any worries.

what does "Set Password" mean? as well as checkbox "do not protect password"?
18670  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ATTN] Clarification of Mt Gox Compromised Accounts and Major Bitcoin Sell-Off on: July 04, 2011, 05:51:15 AM
Gandlaf: No that isn't my statement. You seem to really want to add to what you read. My statement is this:
MtGox has enough funds to cover any losses from the recently stolen coins and has enough to cover what it owes me to date.
MtGox will cover any debt to its customers before it pays me.
The fact that I haven't been paid yet has nothing to do with mtgox's ability to pay. It only has to do with the fact that neither I nor Mark have made time to complete the payment.

In that case, I do want to apologize for ever having even harboured the slightest doubts! You Jed, are quite obviously a saint(or as close as one gets nowadays without divine intervention). Giving up a multimillion dollar business, signing a contract, not insistiting on payment, it sounds like a fairytale. You must be a truely wonderful and completely selfless individual to just wait for payment for your idea if/when it  comes.

The only question for me would be the following: Why keep an admin account to audit payments, if everything is dandy, if your first concern is the bitcoin community and you really donīt want to see a penny before everyone has been paid?

Furthermore, I donīt really get your final point:
"The fact that I haven't been paid yet has nothing to do with mtgox's ability to pay. It only has to do with the fact that neither I nor Mark have made time to complete the payment."

A BTC transfer should be fairly easy(if you donīt know how to do it just ask in the forum), or is it that you arenīt really willing to invest in BTC? In that case I do get it, the MtGox $1000 limit can be a bit of a nuisance.
Apart from the technicalities, let me get this right: You did not make time for/to complete a payment with 6 or 7 figures(by early June)Huh

I love fairytales, but this response is BS.

You would be a truly unique individual to just let a multimillion $ business go.

So why not cut the crap and just disclose in how far you are still involved with MtGox?

look, Jed told me many months ago when i asked him why he sold mtgox that he was afraid of the legal ramifications of running an exchange.  this is understandable for a US citizen given what the US gov't does to people who go against it.  he also told me he was afraid of the technical challenges confronting an exchange and that Mark would be more suited to dealing with security issues.  time has proven Jed correct insofar as his fears went.  too bad for us that Mark wasn't as good as Jed had hoped but that certainly isn't his fault.

Jed also doesn't stand to make a multimillion profit on his sale i'm willing to bet.  so he really is just doing us all a favor by not collecting right now.
18671  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: ATTENTION: Any exchange right now can act like a bank on: July 04, 2011, 02:23:27 AM
Are you saying that someone could lie? This is big news. Can anyone lie or just certain people? Should we trust everyone without thinking? Please tell us more.

only banksters are allowed to lie in this world of ours.
18672  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: My Response to Ben Laurie’s ‘Last Word’ on Bitcoin on: July 04, 2011, 01:14:50 AM
i think the checkpoints are just as you say; insurance lock downs of the block chain.  Bitcoin is safe.
18673  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Bitcoin Show on OnlyOneTV.com on: July 04, 2011, 12:26:02 AM
Nescio,

wow, that was a really long response and i'm not sure i fully understand what you're talking about but here's what i envision:

A Bitcoin Standard.  basically a perpetuation of the USD reserve currency system built on top of Bitcoin instead of gold.  precious metals are obsolete IMO due to immobility.  Nations used to ship hoards back and forth to rebalance global trade imbalances which was slow and ineffective.

A Bitcoin Standard would allow instantaneous rebalancing btwn nations to bring overleveraging back into line worldwide on an instantaneous basis.  we could allow a reasonable amount of fractional reserving, say 10:1, that could prevent an entire collapse of the existing system.  it could be a win/win situation for all parties involved:  bankers could still make loans, citizens would be safe from currency debasement, and the overall system would be less prone to boom bust cycles.
18674  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ATTN] Clarification of Mt Gox Compromised Accounts and Major Bitcoin Sell-Off on: July 04, 2011, 12:13:57 AM
Gandlaf: I didn't say I was bored with mtgox. I said I didn't have enough time to do it correctly.

this is consistent with what Jed has told me in the past.

Kind of the opposite of bored.
I've never faced legal action because of anything having to do with mtgox. Baron was clearly lying since we have never heard from his lawyers.

well, i guess that puts that one to rest.

f*ck the OP.

I apologize if you feel this way towards me :/

If you view the timeline of this thread, you'll see that I initially, happily, attempted to help you even though I should be busy attending to functionality issues reported to me for the app (on holiday weekend T_T).

When I simply asked you to give me the address, so I could verify the statement you made above, you responded with a completely different question.  Further, the "error" which you had claimed occurred:

what am i doing wrong at btc.to?  when i enter my address to receive a shortener, all i get back is a link to http://btc.to/1

This SERIOUS claim is pretty serious.  These claims need to be responded to immediately, and anyone should understand why.

Finally, as you had 700+ posts under your belt, I took the liberty of reviewing your previous posts and I found you to be a very respectable, intelligent individual which did not match with our interaction within this thread.

I hope you can understand why I handled and responded the way I did.

actually i don't.  i only put up 2 post questions which i think are understandable and straightforward and you call me a troll.

i hope you consider carefully the points i made above b/c it IS confusing and the wording is not clear.  i spend a great amt of time testing other peoples products around here and making what i hope are meaningful suggestions to help this community.  your impatience did put me off.

as far as your request of me did u ever consider that my address may contain amounts of btc that i don't want to share with you?  i plugged in your example address which is why i get back http://btc.to/1 i assume.  i also tried a couple of other people's addresses which look similarly simple to the point its hard to believe you can identify a hash address from it.

Once again, I apologize if you hate me and I hope that can change in the future.  Please come to IRC and I know that we can be friends man. Shocked

^_^

having said the above, its all ok, man.  i know you're just trying to help out the community and i think the mtgox android app is killer.

how does a politician go about banning something that is good for 99.99% of the non-banker population?

Since when has a politician put the interests of the individual over the bankers and central planners?

when his re-election depends on it.

prepare for a Bitcoin explosion to the upside...

I agree! Mt.Gox's issues are only affecting a fraction of accounts, and we have multiple exchanges, and the coins did a fantastic job of weathering the disasters of June. Plus, there's been people working on merchant systems to handle coins, so it's probably only a matter of time before coins become much more useful regardless of ability to sell for fiat.

just look at the merchant Wiki as well as the network hashing rate.  talk about a bull market.  trolls like the OP are gonna get steamrolled.

instead of actively ignoring his obligations and responsibilities by deleting peoples' support tickets without so much as an explanation.

give some proof of this.

He, I, and everyone reporting this on the forum is the proof. Go back inside your hole.
