19101  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How long did it take for Satoshi to make the blockchain? on: March 16, 2015, 12:52:14 PM
Well it is speculated that Satoshi had posted on an internet forum about the concept of bitcoin in the early 2000's, around the time that paypal first came out.

Wowa, you just hit something home to me. PayPal, and eBay also for that matter, have only really been around since 2000, but today we consider them indispensable.  Theoretically that is where Bitcoin will be in 15 years.

The sad thing is that Paypal's earliest incarnation was an attempt at BTC esque idealism and look what it became.

From here - http://money.howstuffworks.com/paypal3.htm

"Peter Thiel and Max Levchin founded PayPal in December 1998 under the name Confinity. Operating out of Silicon Valley, the idealistic vision of the company was one of a borderless currency, free from governmental controls.

However, PayPal's success quickly drew the attention of hackers, scam artists and organized crime groups, who used the service for frauds and money laundering.

New security measures stemmed the tide of fraud and customer complaints, but government officials soon stepped in. Regulators and attorneys general in several states, including New York and California, fined PayPal for violations and investigated the company's business practices. Some states, such as Louisiana, banned PayPal from operating in their states altogether."

Kinda familiar, no?
19102  Economy / Speculation / Re: Australian Govt to sell 24,500 BTC on: March 16, 2015, 12:26:26 PM
The article said Victorian government will sell these bitcoins on the open market in coming months instead of auction sale, I'm afraid that if the Bitcoins were dumped into Market, how the market will react to this, drop sharply?

A government body accountable to others is hardly likely to send their property to some sketchy exchange in a foreign country. That would be like the US government selling off a drug baron's mansion on alibaba and getting a chargeback.

Bitcoin is going to break 400 tonight and nobody cares  Angry

They would if it happened. I can't see a compelling reason why. It's welcome to if it wants to in my book.
19104  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin or gold? on: March 16, 2015, 03:07:40 AM
It may be uncool to admit it but I just can't get excited about gold as an investment. I'd like to own some because it looks pretty but that's about it. Anything with an ATH that took place 35 years ago is too sluggish for me.

BTC all the way for me. We dunno where it'll head but I'm willing to follow the ride where it takes me.
19105  Economy / Speculation / Re: This is the all-in moment (Sunday March 15, 2015) on: March 16, 2015, 03:02:52 AM
Buy or die.

This was THE all-in moment of late. However, everything in the frightened primate brain screamed against it at the time.

Aye. It's always the one in retrospect. When you're there at the time most are too busy running around and squealing. I'm certainly not immune myself. I will train myself out of it by running along beaches just like that bit in Highlander.
19106  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: March 16, 2015, 03:00:25 AM
Winklevoss twins speaking about Bitcoin at SXSW tomorrow in Texas, surprised no one has mentioned this. I didn't even know about it until my wife told me that she's going to watch.

I guess their speaking engagements are so prevalent that it's taken for granted these days. I wonder when Gemini will be live and rolling. It should be soon.
19107  Economy / Speculation / Re: If btc -> moon and you no longer need to work, what will you do with your time? on: March 15, 2015, 09:53:44 PM
I would create, irritate and explore. I do that anyway but I'd just intensify my efforts.

What examples do we have of people who've already made bank?
19108  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How long did it take for Satoshi to make the blockchain? on: March 15, 2015, 08:43:01 PM
Didn't Karpeles own the copyright to the word Bitcoin years before it existed? Sorry, I'm going by memory here.

I dunno about copyrights, but the bitcoin.com domain has been around for a lot longer than the system.

19109  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How long did it take for Satoshi to make the blockchain? on: March 15, 2015, 01:35:32 AM
Hey how did did it take for satoshi to make the blockchain?

Fast. It's a lot simpler than most people make it out to be.

Yup. I knocked one out in an hour or so in 1997 when I was stuck waiting for a bus. I was originally going to buy a bar of chocolate and pick my nose but then decided it would be less calorific to create a decentralised currency. I was just about to forge the genesis block when my bus arrived. I had some top boogers to deal with so I deleted everything. Hey ho.
19110  Economy / Speculation / Re: What was the starting price of Bitcoin? on: March 15, 2015, 12:53:25 AM
As far as I recall the first recorded trade was 1300 BTC for a dollar in 2009. If we go for the highest then it would've been on localbitcoins at the height of the mania or an exchange glitch. One sold on CampBX for $9700 a few months ago.
19111  Economy / Speculation / Re: Could 1 satoshi become worth $1? on: March 14, 2015, 04:31:22 PM

I wouldn't want to have my savings in something that had its value because 95% of it is not liquid, and the full market is actually carried by the 5% circulating (like maybe right now with BTC !).  The moment people decide to put their stash in circulation, the value of it would crash 20-fold !

That's pretty much every asset class out there though. You couldn't liquidate a fraction of the gold or stocks out there in the world without turning the value to dust.

That's why BTC will be an interesting case. It could be a hybrid of currency and asset class. I've no idea what that would do to the eventual value.
19112  Economy / Speculation / Re: Time to say goodbye on: March 14, 2015, 03:44:27 PM

]All these "goodbye" posters are nothing but guys that sold their coins and are scared that while they are away the price goes up again, so they stay around spreading FUD.

The OP has been around forever and has clearly stated that he's dying. There is a world beyond the wiggly lines where actual things happen to people.
19113  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin 20MB Fork on: March 14, 2015, 01:08:29 AM

... Here's one channel that supports the 1MB idea:

... Trilema

Too bad the owner is a rapist.

He's the perfect embodiment of modern Bitcoinman. Unusual clothes, arousing facial hair, probable sociopath with mindless zombie minions. Perhaps the new generation of smiley people with those websites with all the content on one scrolling page will win out eventually.
19114  Economy / Speculation / Re: Etherium.org launch to make Bitcoin price go UP? on: March 13, 2015, 06:42:06 PM
People have bourght Ether for about 20 million dollars, 1 year befor launch. So atleast a big group of people beleive in the project.

More likely that they believe in speculating and dumping for more BTC. I'll be curious to see what, if anything, materialises out of all of this.
19115  Economy / Speculation / Re: How many bitcoins do I need to retire in 20 years? on: March 13, 2015, 05:08:55 PM
You guys are overly positive about the prices. Even $5k a coin would be an incredible achievement. Remember that it's a technology based on computers and internet and not many people still have these things.

Hmm. Those figures still look pretty nifty. There are already technologies that allow BTC use with SMS. That accounts for another swathe of people.
19116  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: March 13, 2015, 05:00:58 PM

I'm just messin'. I do miss the shroomy entertainment factor, though.

What was entertaining about someone whose posts were literally interchangeable for years on end? I can't believe it was an actual human. If it was then I hope I'll never sit next to it on a long train journey.
19117  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: March 13, 2015, 04:06:59 PM
Have they disabled right click on this site?

I had this a few days ago. It was fine on another browser.
19118  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Coindesk is giving away a Macbook on: March 13, 2015, 03:59:38 PM
No shipping to Europe  Angry
Typical, Europe always ends up being ignored.
I also heard they are not accepting BTC in their store, can anyone confirm?

Correct. https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/2yoq72/so_let_me_get_this_right_coindesk_launched_deals/

They're a bunch of silly sausages and deserve to become an irrelevance.

I do not like the IBM news, and have gone into capital preservation mode by closing my long for now. I'll wait to see if the market can shake this off:  I believe IBM not using bitcoin will be construed as a negative, or at least an excuse to take profits.

It's tokenisation again. I guess this makes life sweeter in third world banking areas like the US. In the EU money moves around near instantly for free already.

The underlying principles of BTC are what turns me on at least, not another fancy way of moving existing money which is what this is.

19120  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Wall Street To Bitcoin: Does It Really Matter? on: March 12, 2015, 08:38:06 PM
Wall St would trade in smoked placentas if there was money in it so it's no surprise that they'll head for crypto if it looks like taking off.
