1941  Other / Politics & Society / Re: China Plans First Ever Landing on the Dark Side of the Moon on: May 21, 2015, 10:58:41 PM
I don't think that they have the technology to do all this. Most of their space technology is stolen from various countries, especially from the former USSR. Right now, only two countries are capable of conducting manned missions to the moon. They are the United States and Russia. China is a long way off.

If F-35s debacle taught us something, its the fact, that Chinese engineers can copy and modernize US technology faster, than Americans are able to develop and finish it.
No doubt, let others spend their R&D money on the first bunch of steps and then rip it off and start forward from an advanced position. Hardly an honorable endeavor.
1942  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Oregon to test pay-per-mile idea as replacement for gas tax on: May 21, 2015, 10:55:31 PM
They just can't stop thinking of new ways to drain our pockets. Electric cars are still expensive and the government wants to tax these people, who choose to pay more for a car that doesn't pollute the environment. Great idea! Let's tax people who go green and then spend money on air filters, recycling and global warming campaigns.
That's how the lefty elite always tend to think, just like with that carbon credit bullcrap. I'm not saying that most republicans are much better, as they tend to find their creative ways at highway robbery, but at least the libertarian strain of them act seriously about curbing spending and thus making tax reductions possible. However, there are very few of them in varying levels of government because special interest groups conspire to elect their peeps that reward their friends and punish their enemies. Go figure that in this case the left is attempting to eat its own.

Or, they can just use the godfather of digital currencies (bitcoin) instead of starting from scratch. This will surely leave plenty of extra money available to spend elsewhere, or dare I say, give their citizens a tax cut.

Now this is freaking great news! I love hearing advances or injections into companies trying to expand bitcoin more into these remittance markets. There are millions of latinos working in America that send money back home every week or month so undoubtedly more money would reach their family's hands rather than being sucked up in fees. These poor families could use an extra 5%ish back that they aren't normally getting.

Rand Paul was right: Rifles, RPGs and missiles flowed from Benghazi to ISIS ports

Rand Paul asks Hillary Clinton if the US is Shipping Arms from Libya to Turkey
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pg4aL3SUb0w

The U.S. watched as rifles, rocket-propelled grenades, and missiles flowed from Benghazi to Syrian ports where they would become part of the Islamic State's arsenal of weapons, a Defense Intelligence Agency memo reveals.

Then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton denied any knowledge of this when Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky asked her about it during a Benghazi hearing in January 2013. Think Progress said Paul's questions were "pushing a conspiracy theory."

Quote
Paul: "My question is, is the U.S. involved with any procuring of weapons, transfer of weapons, buying, selling, anyhow transferring weapons to Turkey out of Libya?"

Clinton: "To Turkey? I'll have to take that question for the record. That's, nobody's ever raised that with me."

Paul: "It's been in news reports that ships have been leaving from Libya and that they may have weapons. And what I'd like to know is, the annex that was close by, were they involved with procuring, buying, selling, obtaining weapons and were any of these weapons being transferred to other countries? Any countries, Turkey included?"

Clinton: "Well, senator, you'll have to direct that question to the agency that ran the annex. And, I will see what information is available."

Paul: "You're saying you don't know?"

Clinton: "I do not know. I don't have any information on that."

The Oct. 5, 2012, DIA memo, penned before the Benghazi attacks, makes it clear that the U.S. was watching as weapons were transferred from Benghazi to two Syrian ports.

NY Times: 2016 Prospect Rand Paul in New Book: GOP Willing to Change

WASHINGTON — Republican presidential candidate Rand Paul reaches out in his most direct way yet to African Americans in a new book that highlights his libertarian policies on government surveillance, the economy and criminal justice reform.

"My party has let the bond it once enjoyed with minorities fray to the point that it is near beyond repair," the Kentucky senator writes in "Taking a Stand: Moving Beyond Partisan Politics to Unite America," set to be released later this month. He continued, "My Republican Party, the Republican Party I hope to lead to the White House, is willing to change."

Paul, 52, has made reaching out to racial minorities a centerpiece of his political brand as he embarks on his 2016 campaign for president. More than a decade has passed since the Republican Party last won a presidential contest, due in part to the GOP's struggle with minority voters, a growing segment of the population that has overwhelmingly favored Democrats in recent years.

Having Fox News bring this list up w/ their usual panels of fake journalist/propagandists spouting their usual praise of the Bush and co would make for great television. Just watching them freak out in disbelief that Bush would be anywhere near Bin Laden would be amazing.

EXCLUSIVE — RAND PAUL DECLARES VICTORY IN FIRST POST-FILIBUSTER INTERVIEW, FIRES AWAY AT JEB BUSH

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) is already back at work after he filibustered on the U.S. Senate floor for about 10 and a half hours on Wednesday. He’s declaring his marathon a smashing success in the quest to get the National Security Agency (NSA) to stop bulk collection of Americans’ records.

In an exclusive interview with Breitbart News on Thursday morning—his first since leaving the Senate floor late Wednesday evening, just before midnight—Paul said his position on the NSA is gaining more and more steam both inside the beltway in Washington and across America.

“I think the main thing is trying to draw attention to a really, really important issue which is that the government shouldn’t be collecting in bulk our phone records. Warrants should name an individual but really the NSA spying on Americans should end,” Paul said.

Quote
I think that position, particularly outside Washington—as I’ve traveled the country—is particularly popular. But Washington is starting to come around and I think I’ve seen a little bit of a break in the ice in this. Last night there were people from both sides, Republican and Democrat, coming to the floor in support of this. I think we have had a good success and our hope is still that leadership will decide to allow amendments that end the bulk collection and we plan on continuing the fight and having an amendment that will end bulk collection of records.
...

Paul added in his Breitbart News exclusive interview that he believes the widespread bipartisan support for his filibuster on Wednesday—several Democrats and several Republicans joined him on the floor—is a sign that the politicians in Washington are beginning to hear Americans out on their opposition to NSA spying.

...
Paul also fired away at former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who on Thursday seemingly attacked Paul’s filibuster by saying in New Hampshire that there’s “not a shred of evidence” that NSA’s spying on Americans violated their civil liberties.

“Some of the people are sort of mired in the past—and I think there were comments that Jeb Bush made this morning in New Hampshire, saying that he supports the bulk collection of data,” Paul said of his naysayers in the Republican establishment, specifically singling out Bush.

Snowden: Paul filibuster represents ‘sea change’

Sen. Rand Paul’s (R-Ky.) 10-hour floor speech opposing the Patriot Act represents a “sea change” in Congress, government leaker Edward Snowden said Thursday.

Slightly more than 12 hours after Paul — a presidential candidate in 2016 — finished his marathon lambasting of the post-9/11 security law, Snowden took to Reddit to take questions about Congress’s debate over the National Security Agency (NSA).

“Whatever you think about Rand Paul or his politics, it's important to remember that when he took the floor to say 'No' to any length of reauthorization of the Patriot Act, he was speaking for the majority of Americans — more than 60% of whom want to see this kind of mass surveillance reformed or ended,” Snowden wrote, citing a recent poll released by the American Civil Liberties Union.

Rand Paul's Smedley Butler Dog Whistle to the Antiwar Libertarians

Amid lots and lots of interesting, and wonderful to hear on the floor of the Senate, stuff from Rand Paul in his just-concluded talk about all the reasons why the Patriot Act needs to go and the USA Freedom Act needs to be amended before it's passed was a quick quote from a name that doubtless most people hearing didn't recognize: Smedley Butler.

The quote was either a direct statement or paraphrase of Butler's "There are only two things we should fight for. One is the defense of our homes and the other is the Bill of Rights."

But that Paul had the nerve to mention Butler in a positive way was a great, if obscure and possibly easy to overinterpret, sign for those who love Paul for his tendencies toward reining in America's tendencies toward war.

Butler, himself a highly honored major general in the Marine Corps, is author of an incendiary tract called War is a Racket in 1935, beloved of antiwar folk ever since. Christopher Coyne summed it up for us here at Reason nicely back in 2012:

Quote
"War is a racket. It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives."

So begins U.S. Marine Corps Major General Smedley Butler's 1935 pamphlet War is a Racket. Butler, who had participated in many military interventions, came to realize that war allowed elites to gain while less powerful citizens and foreigners bore the conflict's financial, physical, and emotional costs. Citizens, policymakers, pundits, and scholars have yet to internalize Butler's warning.

Indeed they haven't, which is why it's great, even though the words "war is a racket" in their full Butlerian meaning likely never won't come from Rand Paul's lips, to hear Butler's name mentioned in the filibuster-ish peroration today. (Paul similarly named a more thoroughly libertarian secret hero, Lysander Spooner, in his 2013 anti-drone filibuster.) These sort of reminders that Rand Paul comes from the curious and unique background of radical anti-state and anti-war thinking are always nice for those of us who hope for a Rand Paul who doesn't forget the rich heritage of libertarian and libertarian-ish thought. And today's Rand Paul was a pretty pure hero.

Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely so it's no wonder that the secretive and ubiquitous NSA keeps doing whatever they and are so brash about it. You give them an inch and they take a mile which is why they really need to be reigned in by Congress and not be allowed to be a rogue agency anymore.

The Bitcoin community in Kenya (especially the one which is based in Nairobi) is surprisingly large. I hope that Bitcoin will also find a lot of acceptance in Tanzania. The remittance sector is quite big in these nations. There are lot of Kenyans and Tanzanians working in the middle-eastern countries such as UAE and Saudi Arabia. The use of Bitcoin can be mutually beneficial.
I've always hoped for more and increasing growth in the remittance market of bitcoin as it would create a revolving door of demand that would just get larger and larger. Getting just a few %s of that market would be a big plus to get the price to where it at least should be. At some point the world writ large will have to take notice of bitcoin.

add in the term "capitulation".

Yes, that one gets my goat too.

What an exhausting place financial markets must be if every single rise can only happen off the back of every single person being involved in each item reaching the edge of suicide.

Then, just as the final noose is wrapped around the final neck, a young orphan fights her way out of the rubble. Still clutching her teddy she struggles to the nearest Bloomberg terminal.

Her fingers shaking, vomit foaming at the edge of her mouth, blood trickling out of her nose, she places the first order that has happened in over 43 months. At that very moment the sun emerges from behind the clouds and the birds start to sing.

 Cheesy
You are a poet sir!
No kidding, that's one of the best paintings of a picture that we've seen around here in quite some time.

Someone who is obviously quite smart and articulate but is most likely socially inept, isolated and uses this place to get a rise out of people because he/she is incapable doing so in real life.
This person has been an amateur troll years ago and figured that was their lot in life so they honed their skills day in and day out for probably a decade. When someone practices at something they're bound to improve their capabilities which is why it's puzzling why they don't put the same effort into their social skills. What a sad life.

Rand Paul’s lonely NSA filibuster

Live on the Senate floor right now and on CSPAN

---

Sen. Rand Paul announced Wednesday afternoon he’s attempting to filibuster the extension of the Patriot Act, vowing to use all his legislative powers to try to end the snooping law.

The Kentucky Republican’s speech, which began at 1:18 p.m., is not technically holding up any legislation because the Senate is actually currently debating a trade bill, but Mr. Paul said his move was a filibuster nonetheless, as he vowed to hold the floor until he couldn’t go any longer.

“It’s time to end the NSA spying,” his official Twitter account said in a post at 1:36 p.m., as he was on the floor.

Mr. Paul is waging a lonely fight, demanding that the government stop snooping without probable cause or a warrant. That’s a step beyond even some of his other erstwhile civil libertarian allies who want to curtail the Patriot Act’s bulk collection, but would still allow government agents to go after the records of individuals without first seeking a warrant.

I twittered Sen. Cruz and was wondering where he was about an hr ago. And just like that, he appeared and helped Rand close out the show on the Senate floor tonight. It was just that Cruz and Lee (Senators) were supportin the House's Freedom Act rather than but in collusion of Rand's total point of the whole Patriot Act reprisal at this point.
