1961  Economy / Services / Re: A simple bitcoin Q/A. Learn new and interesting stuff about bitcoin. on: April 29, 2018, 01:34:53 AM
Since the lightning network is becoming more popular now,a lot of people are really confused on what actually it is.  So here's a question about it:

Question: What is lightning network? What's its role and what does it do?

It is tough to give very brief summary on lightinig Network but I will try to be very brief and put as much information in less words.

Why we need Lighting network?
The current bitcoin network will not be able to handle if we have to do transactions on large scale as current network will able to handle only 7 (tps) transactions per seconds (which is nowhere when compared to 56000 tps capablity of VISA and handling 4000 tps during peaktime.) So Lightinig Network is a proposed solution that will able to help in doing billion of transactions per day without affecting the blockchain.

How Lightining Network will work?
When two parties are interacting with each other on regular basis then they can commit to signing the transaction  without broadcasting to global bitcoin blockchain. This will remove dependency from blockchain. They can create fund into a 2 of-2 multisignature address (where it requires consent from both parties to create spend).

Micro payment channel created above will create relationship between two parties only. To make bitcoin scalable we will need  a large network of channels on the Bitcoin blockchain. That network will be lighting network.

Lightinig Network will use Hashed TimeLock Contract for security of transactions.

Benefit of lightining network
Rapid payments: payments within an established channel can be made almost as fast as data can travel over the Internet between the two peers.
No third-party trust: the two peers in a channel pay each other directly using regular Bitcoin transactions (of which only one is broadcast) so at no point does any third party control their funds.
Reduced blockchain load
Channels can stay open indefinitely
Rapid cooperative closes
Outsourcable enforcement
Onion-style routing
Multisignature capable
Securely cross blockchains
Sub-satoshi payments
Single-funded channels

Current vulnerability in Lighting network.
Improper Timelocks: Participants must choose timelocks with sufficient amounts of time. If insufficient time is given, it is possible that timelocked transactions believed to be invalid will become valid, enabling coin theft by the counterparty.
Forced Expiration Spam:If a malicious participant creates many  channels and forces them all to expire at once, these may overwhelm block  data capacity, forcing expiration and broadcast to the blockchain. The resultwould be mass spam on the bitcoin network.
Coin Theft via Cracking: As parties must be online and using private keys to sign, there is a possibility  that, if the computer where the private keys are stored is compromised, coins will be stolen by the attacker.
Data Loss : When one party loses data, it is possible for the counterparty to steal funds.
Forgetting to Broadcast the Transaction in Time

All these vulnerablity can be mitigated and Lighting Network will give Bitcoin Network to do billion transactions in a day using the desktop/Home pcs.

In short, Lightning Network will be bidirectional micro payment channel that will help to solve the problem of scalablity in bitcoin Network.

Hi Pugman
I am eagerly waiting for the next question.

@TMAN.

Nice to see you in the beginners forum. May be your's and Jetcash effort will help the forum in long run.

you can share your findings in below thread:

Global Moderator rickbig41 is active there and ban the users.
1965  Other / Meta / Re: Solution to stop Newbie-Jr.Member spamming on: April 23, 2018, 04:39:04 AM
I do not agree with subject of topic as it indirectly implying that all "Newbie-Jr.Member" here are for spamming or all the spamming in this forum is done by "Newbie-Jr.Member". I can agree that there share in spamming is largest of all ranks but topic should be "about stopping spamming" and not to target  a specific ranks in this forum.

Here is my suggestions.
1. Ban all the campaigns that require user to post more than 10 post a week.
2. Formal KYC  for the accounts that are putting "Announcement" and "Bounty" threads in Alt coin board. My personal view  is that these scam developers
are main reasons for the spam in forum. They give fraction of  there coin/token to users here to spam the forum, sell there coins/token in million dollars
and then disappear. So basically they are able to spam the forum with zero cost incurred to themselves and without any revelation of their identity. If
they need to reveal their identity they will not engage/promoting there scam coin in this forum.
3. Do not allow to create more than 2 accounts (or at max. 4) from same IP address and allow people to self delete there accounts.(because sometime
people create these account for scam accusations only and do not use that account again, so deletion of these account should be allowed.)
4. Official spammer black list, if 3 posted post of a user in a week period are found spam, then disable the signature for 2 week, temporarily suspend user
and   put formal entry of user in spammer blacklist and signature of user will be disabled until  the username is cleared from this list.
5. Attach the accounts with Phone numbers (I know Theymos/People will not agree as it will cause KYC). But I am sure Account Farmer will not keep 100's
    of active phone numbers.
1966  Other / Meta / Re: It's no wonder we are infested with bounty and airdrop spammers on: April 23, 2018, 03:33:49 AM
--snip---

Not only these, you will get lot of scam videos in which people will suggesting to buy a ponzi coin to others for their referral bonuses.

It doesn't work that way

For mining ANY block you don't need any bitcoins-- mining itself creates Bitcoins.

So is it correct that even if nobody  do any transaction (for assumption) and miners are mining then they still find/create a block.
1968  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / How the genesis block triggered on: April 21, 2018, 05:53:20 AM
I was wondering how the bitcoin network started. I understood that genesis block is first block, but from where the first bitcoin created to mine that first block.
(Means even for mining that first block we should have a bitcoin and couple of address to do the transaction, so how this first bicoin come into existence.)

1969  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can someone explain why there is a space between these two images? on: April 20, 2018, 01:20:59 PM
Anyone have any idea what is causing it in the first place?

I think every forum has different parser/ or different standards because I checked your same code in some other site code checking box and that code was working as intended.  I read few tags from outside tutorial and they do not work here.

I am also new and no idea what is standard being followed in this forum. you can try your luck by asking your same question in below topic.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1727100.0

I found SFR10 also very experienced but not sure whether he will replies to PMs.

1970  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Amazon fills patent to track Bitcoin users on: April 20, 2018, 02:35:43 AM
I think these big Corporations will gather these data create some new subject like "Selling Engineering" in which they will target the particular individual and decide what they should try to sell that individual at what price or so on (Extensions to Analytics,Forecasting or Customer Demographics etc.)
I think Selling Engineering  (or whatever system these corporation will create) will just be legal form of Social Engineering.
1971  Other / Meta / Re: Mod, please check new plagiarism: Reporting copy/pasting, please permban on: April 20, 2018, 02:13:20 AM
Hi Rickbig41

can you please take a look on below topic also.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2855895.100

Some users reported copy paster there also.
1972  Other / Meta / Re: @Admins: Merit not working as configured, trolls just don't care (no surprise) on: April 19, 2018, 01:24:53 AM
Merit is acting like medicine in this forum but when tooth is decayed too much then dentist extract the decayed tooth instead of giving medicine.

So I donot think Merit can control spam but it will be able contain the spammers in their ranks.

1973  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How do I use search on bitcointalk properly? on: April 17, 2018, 02:48:28 AM

The contextual search in the upper right searches the board you're on and all subboards. If this results in more than 5 boards, but less than all boards, then you get that error (recently-added for performance reasons).

If you want to search the entire forum, you can go to the search page or to the front page. The limitation I added is that you can either search all boards, or limit it to 1-5 boards. But you can't limit it to 10 boards, for example.

Anyways this is way to search the forum using forum search engine but everybody agree that forum engine is somewhat fuzzy.
Better to use google search in this forum..

Way to do this kind of search.

1. Go to google.com
2. In google search bar type below
 site :https://bitcointalk.org   Search string

Here you can replace "Search string" with any of your keywords to search
1974  Other / Meta / Re: [LEARN] BBCode Lessons & Tutorials [+tutorial videos!] on: April 15, 2018, 05:39:10 PM
Lesson 2: BBCode signature max. height

Signature max. height is same for all ranks.
Simple way to check what's the maximum possible height: While designing a signature - create a table column with 3 lines of text, in each line write a letter 'p'.

Remember: Profile signature space has 'same' cascading style sheets as a 'quote' -
- That's why anything below 3rd line 'p' will be not visible on your signature space.

Quote
p
p
p

Hi roslinpl
Thanks for your great tutorial.

I have few questions.
1. Apart from 4000 characters, do forum put limitation on 3 lines? (as you asked to quote p  3 times in different line.)
2. How these p and "pt" will relate to each other?  I read signature above 42 pt will also be not displayed.

1975  Other / Meta / Re: Please create Sticky thread to report copy/pasting and plagiarism. on: April 15, 2018, 02:48:57 PM
I will suggest to create a list of permabanned user for copy/pasting and moderators giving track that which post of that thread they have processed. This will help in reporting as we can easily check whether user is already banned or reported by other but pending review by moderator so no need to take action or re-report.
A Rank "Banned" has been suggested before (by me and other people). That would be the fastest way to know an account is banned already, and doesn't need further attention.

Any particular reason was given for not implementing the suggestion? Actually I am not in mission to catch copy-paster , but they are so widespread in forum that I automatically find them.  A Banned list is not only useful for people reporting them, but it will cause fear in copy-paster too. When they see that so many user are Permabanned , they will automatically mend their ways.

Chances are the Mod who handles the ticket can't ban the user. Most Mods can only nuke Newbies. The post will get deleted, but the user won't get banned.
Can't send a message to the person who is able to ban that user?

Have you tried that? My personal experience is that Mods/Admin rarely reply to PM.
1976  Other / Meta / Re: Please create Sticky thread to report copy/pasting and plagiarism. on: April 14, 2018, 07:26:15 PM
Using the report button for this issue has been working fine for a long time and it isn’t duplicating or anything because most of the times when you report, you report a recent post, and if someone has already reported that user, it is even better. It takes seconds to report someone.

What efforts are you talking about?

I already stated you " normal moderator  do not have capability to ban the user. "
I am sure when  you see duplicated content , you automatically recognize it but you need to use your memory+Google search to find that original URL. I even found people that copied from the local language board , used "Google translator" and posted in English forum.

I just want to say if I  find copy-pasted content, I can just refer to single list and single thread (that will be much easier), It will also serve lesson for other stupid users that copy pasting causes ban.

I guarantee, you will get one thread less in Meta daily, because these copy-paster when banned create a thread here to ask Why banned ?
Creating a list and single official thread is fair to everybody.

1977  Other / Meta / Re: Please create Sticky thread to report copy/pasting and plagiarism. on: April 14, 2018, 06:43:38 PM
Exactly. You just need to click the report button and fill the box "copy pasted from =>url"
It 's the most efficient way for the moderators to notice you and saving your time as well.

I posted recently on the topic from Loyce because
1)we don't have any moderation in the French section
2) the guy was freely scamming people but again as said no mod

...but I knew posting on the topic, a Mod from the English section would kick the guy out asap

It is not a good choice to give the whole URL when some time people copy in parts. I did not understand why you both want to duplicate the effort by others when user might be already banned or reported by others.

Apart from a single sticky thread , I will suggest to create a list of permabanned user for copy/pasting and moderators giving track that which post of that thread they have processed. This will help in reporting as we can easily check whether user is already banned or reported by other but pending review by moderator so no need to take action or re-report.

1978  Other / Meta / Re: Please create Sticky thread to report copy/pasting and plagiarism. on: April 14, 2018, 06:24:34 PM
You can report them by just pressing the "report" button, you don't need to find a thread. And those resports get handled as well (obviously).

I used to do that but last time I also posted as well as reported because there are so many people doing the same, to get merits I suppose.

"Report To Moderator" is for reporting shit post/cross post and it goes to normal moderator queue that do not have capability to ban the user.

1979  Other / Meta / Please create Sticky thread to report copy/pasting and plagiarism. on: April 14, 2018, 05:56:19 PM
Whenever I encountered a copy-paster, I always report them. Reporting them require me to find the existing thread ,archiving and quoting the evidence and file my evidence report in any one of the below thread.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2855895.0  by marlboroza
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1926895.0  by LoyceV

I saw rickbig41 in LoyceV thread banning copy-paster but it does not look to me that moderator has gone through the whole list and below question of LoyceV is still unanswered.

Question for Mods: if I report the post, and it gets deleted, do you still ban the account based on the archived link?

Theymos himself banned some users in marlboroza thread.
Very well-spotted!

matthewogus01: Permabanned
Akosibatman: That seems to be an acceptable level of paraphrasing
Chimcoin: Permabanned
VINCEAKTN: Permabanned
onpages: Permabanned
emondot: Permabanned
Lookjoz: Permabanned
Kawasanz: Permabanned
HappyDevil: Permabanned
Riqelme: Permabanned
desklamp: Was already permabanned
Mystezi: Permabanned

Anything that'd get you expelled from a university for plagiarism (which all of the above-banned examples would) will get you permabanned from this forum, regardless of your rank.

So it is proved beyond doubt that forum permabanned for plagiarism but why the forum still not created any sticky thread (and off course a single thread) to report them.

Apart from a single sticky thread , I will suggest to create a list of permabanned user for copy/pasting and moderators giving track that which post of that thread they have processed. This will help in reporting as we can easily check whether user is already banned or reported by other but pending review by moderator so no need to take action or re-report.

PS: It take effort to report the user but when nobody take actions on these reports then it look likes wasted time and effort and in other hand it give wrong signal that forum is not serious about plagiarism.
1980  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How can i start Signature design ? on: April 14, 2018, 03:05:12 PM
Apart from this Forum signature, Is BB code is used elsewhere?
In first glance, BB Code look similar to HTML.

Edit: Just figured out everything we write in this forum is BB code only. It never strike to me that we use "[" and "]" here instead of "<>"  as in HTML. Look like BB code is/will be preferred language for forum creation
