okay i put the 12 word phrase and then put in a new password. So just to confirm this is the password that is used to send bitcoins right? Because in my laptop, i had to put a password to put in my password before sending the bitcoin.
So you are telling me i were to forget the password, that isn't an issue since i have the 12 word phrase is that correct? And thus when i reinstall electrum, well it won't ask for that password of mine and thus i have the option to put password or not? Thus having the 12 word phrase is enough for everything?
Electrum stores the wallet in your user directory. When you uninstall electrum the wallet is not removed. If you reinstall it it will detect that an old wallet is still there and open it up by default. To get it to create and/or restore another wallet you have to use the file -> new/restore option and later the file >open option to open a specific wallet file. The 12 word phrase lets electrum recreate all your private keys and corresponding addresses. The wallet file stores transaction and address labels that cannot be recovered with just the 12 word seed. So you can access your bitcoins but the labels will not be there unless you keep a copy of the wallet file too. The password encrypts the 12 word phrase before it is written to your hard disk. The idea is that if someone malicious gets their hands on your computer, either locally or remotely, they can't spend your bitcoin until and unless they enter the password. I think that would be very bad idea because anyone that has access to your computer could send the bitcoin easily right if they search your computer? I haven't sent any password yet but i am happy that i was able to restore it on another computer.
Exactly. Setting a password is good. The thing is i will not use this computer anymore soon. Its basically a computer im using to access my electrum because my laptop went down on me and i have to buy a new laptop. So how would you suggest i go with this? Just do the same thing right now on the new laptop when i get one... then erase electrum on this desktop? Thus add/remove programs and delete the program?
After uninstalling electrum from add/remove you should remove the wallet file too. You will find this in the data dir: http://docs.electrum.org/en/latest/faq.html#where-is-my-wallet-file-located

Select:
- Restore a wallet or import keys
- Standard wallet type
Then it'll ask you to enter your seed. So type those 12 words in. If they are correct the next button at the bottom of the window will be clickable ( i.e NOT grayed out). Click on that and it'll generate addresses and ask you to set a password for your restored wallet. This password has nothing to do with your previous password. It's a new password and if you like it can be the same as your old one or a different one. You will be asked for it when spending your bitcoins.
You can always restore from the 12 words only. The 12 words alone are a sufficient backup.

how many words are in your seed? For a 2fa wallet it should be a 25 word seed. Is that what you have?
BTW choosing 2fa as the wallet type when restoring the wallet is the correct approach for a 2fa wallet.

Best thing to do is to create a new wallet with the private key on the paper wallet and send the coins from that wallet to whereever you want to use it, so it becomes restorable using the seed of that wallet.
Sweeping accomplishes the same thing in less steps. That's why I first talk about sweeping the private key in my post above.

When you create a Paperwallet on bitaddress.org you get the Text (Address,Key) and 2 QR Picture for every Wallet you generate... Maybe there is a way to find the pciture it in the Cache/Temp from Chrome ?
That's dynamically generated by javascript in the browser so chrome is not going to cache that. I think you are out of luck on this one. I suggest writing it off as a loss.

When I try to transfer, the status say: Partially signed. And no money gone. If I type my 2FA code after my password, I get: Invalid otp
Can anyone please help!?
Thank you!!
iZ
Invalid otp means the 2fa code you typed in is incorrect. Usually this happens because the time on your PC and/or your mobile are wrong. So make sure the clock on both those devices is set correctly.

I couldn't imagine any beginner or even some novice users figuring this bug out because gui users will see a silent failure. I am a Ubuntu beginner and having the same issue...at the risk of sounding stupid, where do I find the config file to delete? Many thanks It's in a hidden folder in your home directory. It has a name that begins with a dot : ~/.electrum Here's a guide for various platforms: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Electrum#Wallet_FileI have also deleted config file but still getting same error anybody help me how can i resolved this problem delete the blockchain_headers file.

apt is for downloading stuff from your distro's repos i.e. ubuntu's repos. you installed electrum manually without using your distro's repos. To remove it use:
sudo pip uninstall electrum
You can remove the electrum dependencies via apt because that's what you used to install them:
sudo apt-get remove python-qt4 python-pip
Even after you do all of the above your electrum wallet will remain in ~/.electrum. Because deleting a bitcoin wallet can lead to monetary loss electrum does not remove them when you remove it. So you can delete that folder manually but be sure to write down your seed words first (13 random english words).

Hi there, did a blunder and transferred 2 btc to the default wallet, which I never use. I have the seed from the installation (I think it is for the default wallet) but I can seem to be able to reset the pw by using the seed from the 1st installation, and I have tried every possible password phrase I normally would use.
when i try to restore, (restore - new wallet name - paste seed) nothing happens, except that i got another empty wallet.
So I promise 0,2 BTC in bounty to anyone that can be so gentle to help me access my default_wallet btc again.
If you need more info, just ask and i'll give you what i got
Does the wallet have familiar addresses in it? Look under addresses tab. Look under "used" too on that tab. Does it have familiar addresses? What do you see on the bottom right of the window? Is the network connection icon green or red? Try switching to a different server by clicking on that icon. Some servers are lagging behind these days. As cereberus has said, your seed is probably wrong.
Seed has a checksum in it so if it was wrong the wallet would never have been restored. Electrum would not have allowed it.

So I just recently interested on Bitcoin vanity address, and I generated some cool looking address. And then this idea came out, how can I give or sell people these vanity addresses that I've found? Is it possible to generate an address and then give the ownership to someone? Is there any way that I can remove the first private key and then my friend make a new one for himself?
You can do what is called a split key generation of vanity addresses. This way you never have the private key so there is no way you could move the bitcoins yourself and any buyer of your service does not have to worry about whether they can trust you or not. However it is a little complicated. I suggest googling for more information on how it works. I see dannyhamilton has explained how it works above. So read that.

[/b][/b]I grabbed some BTC (as I have many times) in my rush I pasted an receive address that I had saved rather than create a new one using my online wallet (Blockchain) I eventually remembered that this address was when I was using Tails OS and the installed BTC client (in 2014) - I presume it is Electrum. I managed to restore the account using the address (1HgLRgEHcwpnHErdkFnbGgHDtK72WNAEGH) which is visible in Electrum along with the available BTC, however it's watching only. I have a list of words (17 in fact) and have also tried 12 as the seed when restoring the account but to no avail, I even tried an older version.
Is it that I used a different BTC wallet software? The words I have are incorrect? Just forgot what I am doing as I last used the address and software in 2014? Lost the BTC, can see them, but no touch.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
There is no version of electrum that had 17 word seeds. You used some other wallet in 2014. You need the private key for your address in order to be able to spend from it. In some wallets, like electrum, all private keys are derived from a single seed. So you need either the seed or the address specific private key. Since you have no clue what wallet you used I suggest figuring that out first. It's not electrum, though.

i want to ask sir how to import wallet blockchain new wallet system HD to electrum is new blockchain system can't private key
and i hope explain for me with picture
HD wallets aren't always compatible with each other so the best thing you can do is create a new electrum wallet and send all your bitcoins to an address in that new wallet. To create a new wallet use file>new/restore. To open the wallet in future use file> open. To create a shortcut to the wallet use the -w switch: electrum -w c:\path\to\wallet\file By default wallets are stored in this location: http://docs.electrum.org/en/latest/faq.html#where-is-my-wallet-file-located

Hi there,
I have my wallet seed phrase as well as my password and a few of my addressees as well. I am fairly certain that I have copied these down accurately. However, when I go to restore my wallet using the seed phrase, the "next" button stays greyed out until I enter the first seven words of my seed. I have twelve words total. However, Electrum only seems to want to allow me to proceed with seven words. If I do so, my wallet addresses are different and I have no BTC to spend.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
First of all please ignore the coin-keeper guy. He's sending you on a wild goose chase. The reason the next button appears greyed out is that the seed you are typing in is incorrect. The words have to a) be correctly spelled and present in the electrum dictionary b) the order of the words has to be correct and c) the number of words also has to be correct. In electrum wallets older than version 2.0 the number of words for the seed was 12. In new wallets created with version 2.0 and later the number of words is 13. It is possible to restore an old 12 word wallet in a current version (>2.x) wallet. But first you need to confirm that you indeed used a pre 2.0 version of electrum when you originally created your wallet. Is that correct? Do let us know the current version you are using to restore the wallet too? If you say the wallet is of pre-2.0 origin then it has just 12 words in it's seed. So the quantity of words is correct. That leaves the order and spelling. Given below is the link to the electrum dictionary. See if the words you have are all present there: https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/blob/master/lib/wordlist/english.txt

Hey--
When I first registered with Electrum, I set up a practice default account. I later deleted Electrum and later re-downloaded it not realizing that the practice default account was still there. Later when I was actually ready to buy bitcoins, I created another account not realizing that the default wallet was still active. When I transferred bitcoins, I mistakenly sent it to the "default wallet" instead of the "real one," if that make sense. I didn't keep any of the information for the default wallet because it was really just for practice but I have all the information for my "real one." if that makes sense. Any suggestion? Or, is this over for those bitcoins? Thanks.
Did you set a password on the default wallet? If not then you can still spend those bitcoins. If you did set a password then you will have to try and recall that password. See if you can figure it out yourself. If not then there is a person who offers to bruteforce wallets with forgotten passwords. But he will only succeed if you have some idea of what the password was. For future reference you can create short cuts to specific wallets using the -w switch: electrum -w c:\path\to\wallet\file
Wallet files are stored in the electrum data directory

The correct way to distinguish transactions by different people is by allocating a different address for each person to send bitcoins to. This is one of the first things you learn about handling bitcoin payments. The fact that they don't know this should tell you a lot about their level of competence.

So basically, there's .018 in an address that I should have but it isn't in my wallet. I just updated to the latest version and the problem remains.
Electrum relies on servers run by volunteers to get transaction data. Please switch to another server by clicking on the green/red orb icon in the bottom right of the electrum window. This might jolt the wallet to update your balance. Note that it'll take a few minutes to sync. You should see it say as much in the status bar in the bottom left. Try a couple of different servers if it doesn't work. If it still doesn't work after that then restart electrum.

seed mnemonic is indeed 25 words for 2FA wallets. So you have the 25 word seed and you selected the correct type of wallet when attempting to restore the wallet (as show in the image here)? If your answer is yes to both questions then the possibilities are as follows: 1) the words are mispelt or the wrong words 2) the order of the words is incorrect 3) there is a bug in electrum. Let's rule out 1 and 2 before we go blaming electrum, OK? If you go to this URL below you will find the entire electrum english language dictionary. All the words that electrum uses to represent seeds are listed there. See if all the words in your seed are listed there and the spelling is correct: https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/blob/master/lib/wordlist/english.txtIf you find all 25 words of your seed there then it's down to the order of the words. If all 25 words are not found there then see if you can figure out what the mistake is i.e. mispelling or typo or what.
