1981  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Adjustable Blocksize Cap: Why not? on: January 12, 2021, 03:31:38 AM

I merited your post because I think it is good to discuss these types of ideas, even if they are bad. These discussions could potentially lead to good ideas.

Your suggestion effectively allows the miners to decide the blocksize. It would be trivial and cost-free for the miners to either send many transactions to themselves with an arbitrary transaction fee, or to include fewer transactions than is economically logical.
1982  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Where do you store your cold wallet?? on: January 12, 2021, 03:18:55 AM
Also, where do you store your backup recovery phrase? Seems risky to store them both in the same place right? Fire could take both out.
You should actually keep multiple backups of your cold storage wallet.

You can use the 3-2-1 method for your cold storage wallet:
Keep 3 copies of your wallet, in at least 2 mediums of storage, and have at least 1 copy of your wallet off-site (in a different location).

<…>
Since you’ve got them at an exchange, you really haven’t got any control over the bitcoins related to any particular purchase. By that I mean that what you’ve got on the exchange is a balance on the exchange’s software, but there is no one-to-one mapping between your purchases and the subjacent bitcoins held at the exchange, whatever combination of storage they use. The movements there are off-chain, and are simply movements on the exchange’s internal ledger (not a hardware wallet) used for book keeping. There's no possible approximation that can be perform with bitcoins you do not control.
I think the OP is asking about selling specific tax lots of coin that he has purchased over time.

This is really more of a legal question than a technical one. I don't think the specific inputs used in a transaction should make a difference for tax lot purposes. The OP should contact a tax professional that is familiar with his specific situation in order for him to get advice on how to optimize his specific tax situation.
1984  Other / Politics & Society / Re: [POLL] Let’s say Trump did win the election... on: January 12, 2021, 03:08:12 AM
Now they're trying to impeach him while he's walking out the door...  This is the kind of immature back and forth pathetic bullshit I never thought I'd see in the US government.  Trump is an asshole, sure.  This petty move from the democrats is only adding fuel to the fire that is burning America's reputation.  Pelosi is a child with a grudge, and it's so sad to see this level of maturity from our elected leaders.  They're politicians for god's sake.  All they have to do is not act like children, but here we are.  You could expect this type of pettiness from business leaders, but politicians?  Pathetic.
There are some reports saying that Democrats might not send the impeachment 'papers' to the Senate until months after Biden is in office. I think this could result in a conviction as Trump will have much less influence on Republicans at that time, and Trump is sure to do more stupid things between now and then. Obviously impeaching Trump is only going to further divide the country, and isn't something that should be done.
1985  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Unpaid Capital Gains Tax on forgotten exchange accounts on: January 11, 2021, 01:52:02 AM
Good Evening,

I first got into BTC back during the 2017 rise and crash, where I made a rushed decision to buy in with approximately $1500 at the ATH, only for it to steadily come back down and wipe out whatever gains I had. During that crash, I recall semi frequently selling and buying ETH along with Litecoin, and frequently adjusting the ratios I had of each. I withdrew whatever I had in BTC and ETH to my private wallet,
It sounds like you might not have any capital gains tax liability.

If you had net trading losses, in terms of USD, you should not have a capital gains tax liability. I would suggest speaking to a tax professional who is familiar with your specific situation, and who has reviewed your trading records (that you give them to review) to advise you. If you do owe back taxes, your tax professional will probably advise you to file an amended return for the years you underpaid.

To gain access to your accounts, you will have to contact Gemini/Coinbase and complete whatever verification they want you to complete.
1986  Other / Meta / Re: Repeated Low Quality Posts by User B1tUnl0ck3r - Ban Consideration on: January 10, 2021, 08:14:21 AM

You can have whoever is in charge of the WO thread to remove his posts, via automation.
Afaik, self mod option only allows users create local rules, but they can not override forum rules. So if a reply breaks such rules, you can report to mods and they would act on it. Allowing a single user moderate such a large thread is not quite efficient and if a reply breaks forum rules, mods would directly act on reports.
The WO thread is not moderated by the mods for the majority of forum rules.
1987  Other / Meta / Re: Repeated Low Quality Posts by User B1tUnl0ck3r - Ban Consideration on: January 10, 2021, 07:34:17 AM
The WO thread is not moderated the same as the rest of the forum, so he will probably not be banned for posts in WO.

I have noticed he has posted some garbage in the P&S sub, and have recently reported some of his threads.

You can have whoever is in charge of the WO thread to remove his posts, via automation.
1988  Other / Politics & Society / Re: US Elections 2020 - very self such moderated on: January 10, 2021, 07:16:04 AM
So aside from this being dangerous I think it's important to talk about the implications of banning the current sitting President, soon to be ex-President.
section 230
As a society, we should consider if it is acceptable for a company to influence society via the way they moderate their content while being largely unaccountable to citizens.

I don't think 'start a new platform' is sufficient to address the above. Major social media platforms serve as an effective town square and speech at a real town square is protected by the first amendment.

Parler for example is a customer of AWS and Google. There are a very small number of apps that are banned for political reasons and are probably insufficient to get most people except the people with the strongest political ideology to use alternative platforms that are open to these apps.

Changing 230 with regard to what content is removed should be fairly simple. Currently, social media companies can remove content they deem 'objectionable'. The term 'objectionable' is specifically up to individual social media companies. The definition of 'objectionable' could be more narrowly defined to include only a subset of content. Social media companies could also mark content with various labels that individual users can decide to either view or not view. Changing 230 with regard to who gets banned is much more difficult.

BTW, I don't think Craigslist's "dating" subs were really for dating. I think it is more likely that most of the ads were for sex work. Facebook did open their competing dating site, but they also have many competitors that don't have 1% of the resources that Facebook has.
1989  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How many of you check the code of open source software? on: January 10, 2021, 06:24:38 AM
Every miner uses the newest Update... the updates are centralized:

1. It's officially hosted on one site, downloaded at a central location.
2. Not all miners check or look at the code or even work on it -- a few devs do. If those few devs decide to inject malicious code... everyone else is just going to download and implement it.
3. There are no real security checks with the updates -- no formal body of regulators or official code security team is going to check it for malware... yes, it's open source and everyone can view it -- but then you'd need volunteers to check it regularly. Often, people who check the code only do so after everyone updated already.

So I ask, as bitcoin gets more and more expensive and large financial institutions are considering pouring their holdings in ... the people behind the security code are legitimately not as decentralized.
Mining pools typically are technologically advanced enough to build their own bitcoin implementations that is custom to their pool. Also, if a miner were to have malicious software, this would not affect any user of bitcoin.

As software is updated with Git, the specific changes are highlighted. This means you can verify the code one day in its entirety, and as the software is upgraded, would only need to review the specific changes as opposed to reviewing the entire code again.
1990  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 25th Amendment after Trump supporters riot in the Capital on: January 10, 2021, 06:11:52 AM

I think Trump lost a lot of his supporters by the way he acted since the election, especially in the rally on the 6th. Trump failed to condemn the rioting, and he should have done that. I think Trump was trying to delegitimize Biden's presidency, similar to how his presidency was delegitimized, and he ended up going too far.

Biden appears to be appointing a lot of extremists to his cabinet, and a lot of extremist proposals are being pushed by the left. This is counter to the centrist that Biden presented himself as during the election. I would expect voters to reject this in 2022, and in the 2024 presidential election.

After Giuliani's call to the senator and Trump's call to the Georgia Secretary of State, I'm thinking that Trump might seriously be having a mental breakdown.
This is very well possible, and unfortunate. He has been making bizarre claims privately (such as in the leaked call to the GA secretary of state) that are unsupported by fact.
There's a risk then that if Israel and Saudi Arabia prod him in the right way, they could get him to think that Iran was behind it, and he could order a strike on them. Or even worse, he could get it into his head that China is behind it, and order a nuclear strike against a nuclear power.
Pelosi recently had a call with the military leaders, asking them to not follow Trump's orders if he were to launch military action, or order a nuclear bomb launched. It is unclear as to what their response was, or how the military would actually respond to Trump's orders.
These are pretty unlikely, but I would feel better if Trump was 25thed. It's difficult to pull off, though, so I doubt it'll happen.
The WSJ editial board called for Trump to resign, and I agree this would be best for our country.

1991  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Is the Ledger safe to buy from unofficial resellers? on: January 10, 2021, 05:21:44 AM
Every hardware wallet generates your private keys for you, am I right?  Is that actually a security issue?

It's not a security issue if generated properly.

The private keys are derived hierarchically from the seed. It is the seed generation which can be an issue.
Enough entropy is required which is achieved through using secure elements, crypto co-processors, other RNG's. It basically depends on the Random Number Generator.
Certified secure elements and crypto co-processors are secure enough.
In the context of the OP...

If someone were to buy a ledger from an unofficial reseller, there is a risk they are not actually receiving a real ledger HW wallet, but rather a counterfeit that generates seeds in a way that is not random. The seed could be one of a subset of a few billion possible seeds that could be easily brute-forced by an attacker.
1992  Other / Politics & Society / Re: How will Trump leave the White House? on: January 09, 2021, 01:39:02 AM
...

Now that Trump is banned from Twitter, he'll be sending emergency text message alerts to people's phone! When he leaves the White House he might let everyone know that CNN is fake news or something, or to go tune into Sean Hannity.

You can’t actually ban the President of the United States from Twitter. He has too many spokesmen who can send messages on his behalf and when he is banned, anything he says via a spokesperson will be amplified. This will remain true after he leaves office.
1993  Other / Meta / Re: The corruption here is just way to obvious. What's more concerning is ... on: January 07, 2021, 05:35:31 PM
I will be completely honest with you. I think you should drop it. Don’t discuss concerns with the trust system.

The trust system is not perfect. There is room for improvement. It is what we have now, and is probably as good as it is going to get.

You are not going to change anyone’s mind.
1994  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 25th Amendment after Trump supporters riot in the Capital on: January 07, 2021, 01:53:49 PM
I think invoking the 25th Amendment would result in riots in the street throughout the country. Trump has committed to a peaceful transfer of power, so most likely this isn’t going to happen.
1995  Other / Meta / Re: The corruption here is just way to obvious. How high does it go ? on: January 07, 2021, 06:07:41 AM
I think this goes up to Satohshi's boss, or possibly even higher.
1996  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Pro-Trump rioters breach Capitol, forcing lockdown; one person shot... on: January 07, 2021, 05:07:03 AM
SIGH.

Rudy Giuliani was trying to call Senator Tuberville (R-AL) and asking him to object to more states in the electoral certification to buy them more time, the only problem was that he called the wrong Senator and the person that he called shared the audio with the media.

What the fuck kind of clownshow coup is this.
So Trump has an idiot legal team. He should not be employing celebrity lawyers, he should be employing people who have in-depth knowledge of the law.

If Trump does end up getting prosecuted, my bet is that Giuliani ends up having his fingerprints on the case.
1997  Other / Politics & Society / Re: US Elections 2020 - very self such moderated on: January 07, 2021, 04:52:01 AM
With Ted Cruz making a fool of himself (in his defense, hilariously unlucky timing having to go from his speech to hiding under his desk) and so many Republicans finally conceding Trump is a psycho I expect a whole bunch of people working for Trump to resign very soon if they have any reputation left to salvage.

Expecting a TON of people in the WH to resign over the next few days. Only way to ensure that they’ll have a job in the next Republican administration, as this is the last straw for Trumpism in the party — or at least for the future of the party.
There have been a handful of Press/communications related resignations today. I wouldn't think much of this until 'real' staffers start to resign, such as those who have actual influence on police.

National manufacturing lobbying group came out and is backing the call as well. We’ll see where that goes and what Trump does on his twitter as a response.
Trump is actually banned on Twitter. Expect to see a thread by RealDonaldTrump2 trying to appeal the ban in meta. There are a lot of business leaders condemning the violence (its too bad they didn't do the same this summer).
1998  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Pro-Trump rioters breach Capitol, forcing lockdown; one person shot... on: January 07, 2021, 04:40:26 AM
There were too many irregularities in the election for Trump supporters to believe the election was fair.

If you don't want this kind of nonsense, both sides should play by the rules.

So you're basically saying that democrats ran the election? Sad that you are still clinging to the lies of this charlatan in light of his recent actions, which have overwhelmingly exposed his malevolent fraudulence beyond any shadow of a doubt.

Everybody with any sort of actual expertise or official capacity within the scope of the election has said that Trump lost. You are overriding all of this to continue believing in someone who was known to be a pathological liar well before he ever took office. This approaches the very definition of insanity.
I am saying that the rules of the election were not followed. This was the case in many states. Cases were not brought before the election, and the courts did not want to get involved after the fact, potentially invalidating millions of votes.

Trump's legal team was especially bad, as was his messaging. if either was halfway decent, he would have had a shot of the Presidency in the next term.
1999  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Opinions on Phoenix Wallet? on: January 07, 2021, 04:28:02 AM
This topic deserves a bump Smiley I've been using Phoenix Wallet a bit more lately, and I'm quite happy with how well-connected it is. I get more failed payments on BlueWallet than on Phoenix Wallet now, and Phoenix charges less fees. I paid around 0.01% fee on a 80,000 sat payment from Phoenix Wallet, while this would be a minimum of 0.3% on BlueWallet.

BlueWallet doesn't charge anything for on-chain deposits, Phoenix charges 0.1%. But that amount is even lower than the minimum BlueWallet charges to send funds out using LN, so Phoenix is cheaper in the end.
I wonder how they'll turn a profit though: 0.1% of a small deposit isn't even enough to cover the fees to open a channel, and each new on-chain deposit creates a new channel.
BlueWallet is a custodial wallet, while Phoenix Wallet is not. Making a deposit to BlueWallet is sending coin to a service that is crediting your account while sending coin to Phoenix Wallet is actually opening a LN channel with a percentage of your 'deposit' going to Phoenix.

2000  Other / Politics & Society / 25th Amendment after Trump supporters riot in the Capital on: January 07, 2021, 04:20:39 AM
There have been reports by CBS News that some of Trump's cabinet members are considering invoking the 25th amendment to remove Trump from office in light of the riots and violence today in the Capital.

While I do believe a Trump Presidency in the next term would be best for America, and that Trump had legitimate causes of action to overturn state-specific results, Trump did not capitalize most likely due to incompetence within his legal team. At this point, there is no path to victory on the part of Trump, and he should concede that he did not win the election.

If Trump is removed from office before the end of his term, his ability to run in 2024 is diminished, as his ability to play 'kingmaker' in the future.

What do you think? Should Trump be removed before the end of his term? Is Trump's telling his supporters to 'go home' while also saying the election was 'stolen' a strong enough message?

edit:
Edited OP to include the end of Trump's Presidency, and the transition of power to Biden
