1241  Other / Meta / Re: Do you think some plagiarism can happen "by mistake"? on: September 07, 2021, 04:56:46 AM
I'll show an example of my accidental plagiarism:
Post 57872251 (by LoyceV) (scraped on Mon Sep 6 11:32:55 CEST 2021):
I have to disagree with you on this one. If Dean unilaterally changed the terms of the BKB tokens, you would have a breach of contract claim against him.[ /quote]
I didn't type that, I made a mistake editing the quote. Of course mistakes can happen, and in most cases I can quickly edit it. But it also happens I don't have time to reread my post.
With 17,000 posts, someone dedicated enough might find a smoking gun.

Quoting myself:
I'm always thinking: what if it happens to me someday? ~
Recently, I was typing jibberish and totally messing up quotes when I had a fever, and as a family with young kids and busy days I suffer from a continuous lack of sleep. I'd hate to lose access to my favourite forum if I ever mess up one way or another.
Your example is not plagiarism. There is a clear extra "/quote" bracket that has no "open quote" bracket, and there is a quote that is inaccurately attributed to someone who did not make a post, but was quoting someone else in his post. You also copied the entire portion of a post, and clearly responded to the content of the post under the post.

If you had not caught your mistake, your post should have been reported, and a moderator responding to the report should have fixed the broken quote. From a moderation perspective, there shouldn't be any question of plagiarism in the above post.

In my experience, it is more common for mods and admins to look for reasons not to ban users who are breaking the rules, than to look for reasons to ban users who have broken rules.
1242  Other / Meta / Re: Do you think some plagiarism can happen "by mistake"? on: September 06, 2021, 07:10:33 AM
I think Mpamaegbu likely intentionally plagiarized his post. The post in question is several years old, and I am not sure if he was participating in a signature campaign at the time. IMO he is sufficiently established of a forum member that a temp ban, rather than a permaban would probably be in order.
If his intention was to plagiarize, he wouldn't indicate that he took content from someplace else by writing "smuggled out snippet below" right there in the first sentence of that incriminating post.
Okay, that is not something I had substantially noticed before. I have negative opinions regarding copying content (even when citing said content), as I discuss below, however, I don't think this substantiates any kind of long-term ban, nor long-term signature ban.

There are a lot of people who basically copy entire articles in a thread and have a citation at the bottom of the post. This is not plagiarism, but IMO is another problem as the post has virtually no original content nor commentary. The above is often not even someone summarizing an article, it is copying entire articles.
If not formatted properly that's plagiarism too (not on bitcointalk though) and low value shitpost that should be reported & deleted.
My opinion is that this kind of content is low value in nature. I wish people would not do this. However, as long as forum rules (and practice) allow this, I cannot in good faith favor a ban for doing this.
1243  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: [FLAGGED] [scam] BetKing.io broke ICO promise and dropped token value 99% on: September 06, 2021, 07:01:04 AM
If someone had sold at a low price, their claim would have transferred to whoever purchased their tokens.
Lol, that would be Dean himself! He told people that BKB tokens would expire, and should be exchanged for the BKT tokens he created. Not having them expire (and possibly buying them back from himself) is just shady.

That also means buying back BKB tokens doesn't make me whole: he broke his buy-back promise, which is what forced me to exchange the BKB tokens for other tokens.
I have to disagree with you on this one. If Dean unilaterally changed the terms of the BKB tokens, you would have a breach of contract claim against him.

If someone owes you money as evidenced by a bond, you cannot sell the said bond for a discount and expect the creditor to pay you the difference between the sale price of the bond and 100 cents on the dollar of the face value of the said bond. The buyer of the said bond can negotiate with the creditor to settle the debt, which may or may not involve the creditor receiving less than the face value of the bond.
1244  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Abortion should be banned. on: September 06, 2021, 06:52:27 AM
Humans say it is a human right not to be excluded from medical procedures based on sex.  Not allowing women access to medical procedures is discrimination.

Science says when a fetus is viable based on the study of human developmental biology.
There are many abortions performed when the fetus would have been able to survive if it had been delivered rather than aborted. These abortions are the most clearly wrong. With advancements in medical technology, viability outside the womb has become increasingly earlier in pregnancy over time.

Restrictions on abortion are not prohibiting women from receiving abortions based on their sex.

Abortions until viability is a decision only the mother should be taking.  Science tells us that viability is around 22-24 weeks.

If you want to be on the side of caution, make the laws allowing all abortions until 16 weeks, or thereabouts.

Restrictions on abortions implicitly discriminate against women.

Imagine if states had different laws against receiving cancer treatments based on the size of your prostate.  Some states would allow treatments as soon as the cancer is detected, others will say that your prostate has to be larger than 4 inches.  Most men with prostate cancer will be prevented from receiving their treatment in that state.  The laws would discriminate against them without explicitly stating that men are prevented from receiving their cancer treatment.

Biology tells us that only women can get pregnant. However, it is often the case that men are pressuring pregnant women to get an abortion because they want nothing to do (including financially) with the baby.

If radical, far-leftists were serious about "my body, my choice, they would make it illegal for men to pressure women to get abortions for unwanted babies. This is not the case, leftists, celebrate late-term abortions, and encourage women to cede the choice to get an abortion to leftist men who wish to avoid responsibility to pressure women to get an abortion.
1245  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: [FLAGGED] [scam] BetKing.io broke ICO promise and dropped token value 99% on: September 06, 2021, 05:58:08 AM
And now this happens:
The goal of this relaunch is to refund old ICO token holders.
15% of the site profit each month will go towards buying back old BKB tokens.
Dean said BKB tokens would expire 2 years ago, leaving the only option to exchange them for his (much more abundant) BKT tokens. And now Dean is saying he's buying back BKB tokens again. Let's just add it to the long list of shady actions.
I came here to ask about this very issue. Is there any evidence that Dean is in fact trying to make investors whole by buying the old BKB tokens?

If someone had sold at a low price, their claim would have transferred to whoever purchased their tokens.
1246  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Multisig for cold storage, do you keep seed backups or hardware wallets or both? on: September 06, 2021, 05:47:14 AM
Why would you wipe the seeds from the hardware wallets? Why don't you store the hardware wallets with the backup seeds? If you are already planning on storing the seeds someplace, storing hardware wallets containing the seeds will not increase risk of theft of your (friend's) seeds.

Keep in mind that it is a best practice to have your backups stored in at least two mediums of storage.
Yeah, if you have cryptosteels for each of the locations, you don't really need the hardware wallets at all. It's possible to just store the steel seeds & destroy (overwrite + acid dump + burn down?) the hardware wallets. But since you already bought them, you might as well store each of them together with their respective steel backup. It will be more convenient in case they turn out to be still working in the future.

There is no increased risk in storing a hardware wallet together with its steel backup if we assume storage of the steel backup is secure.

If you're lucky, when you'll want to spend the funds, the devices will still work and you can sign transactions with at least 3 working devices; if more than 2 are broken due to various circumstances, you can recover from steel wallets.
IMO a HW wallet will reduce risk over using a "written" wallet.

When you want to spend your coin, you will generally need to travel from where the private key is located to your home with your private key. If your seed is written on a paper (or steel) wallet, there is the risk that someone will steal your seed while you are en route to your home, and if this happens, the thief will have access to the plaintext seed. If you are using a HW wallet, and this was to happen, the thief will generally need specialized equipment, and advanced technical ability to potentially access your seed and the above will not guarantee access to your seed.
1247  Other / Meta / Re: Do you think some plagiarism can happen "by mistake"? on: September 06, 2021, 05:32:00 AM
However, there are some people who look for plagiarism by people that disagree with them, and/or that are critical of them.

Of course there is, I admit it. But these are ideological people, it does not matter for them who to look for plagiarism, they are against any plagiarism. And this troll is looking for plagiarism only from the participants of some kind of signature campaigns. That makes all the difference.
I am not sure I agree with your conclusions.

Those that look for plagiarism by people who disagree with the person are not against "any" plagiarism, they are aginst people who think differently, and who criticize them.

I would also point out that in the past, DarkStar_ has offered bounties for people who are able to find substantial rule-breaking that results in a participant being removed from his campaign. So there is a financial incentive for people to look for things such as plagiarism, alt accounts, and other frowned upon behavior by those in the CM campaign.

1249  Other / Meta / Re: My appeal on Mpamaegbu on: September 05, 2021, 09:29:14 PM
Is this the only time you have plagiarized anything? Were you participating in a signature campaign when you posted that thread?

The thread in question was open for at least an hour, so I am not sure how credible the argument that "you were rushing" to lock the thread is.

I would support a temp ban + signature ban if you have no other instances of plagiarism. If you were not participating in a signature campaign at the time, I would argue for additional leniency. This is based on your merit history (which implies your contributions to the forum).

Edit:
It has been brought to my attention that Mpamaegbu wrote the following in his alledged plagiarized post:
With the G20 economic summit underway today and tomorrow in Argentina, many are likely to conclude with the smuggled out snippet below that the meeting will end in favour of the crypto community.
[...]
[plagiarism]
IMO, the above shows the OP did not intend to plagiarize when he made his post, despite how much I oppose the type of behavior I think he was engaging in.

It remains my belief that the post in question was a low-value post. I don't believe a single instance of a low-value post has resulted in any kind of substantial ban. At most, I would advocate for a 3 day ban, and no signature ban. This is assuming there are no additional instances of plagiarism in his post history.
1250  Other / Meta / Re: Do you think some plagiarism can happen "by mistake"? on: September 05, 2021, 05:40:58 PM
On the one hand I thank you for the work you do against plagiarists, but on the other hand I think you should expose all the evidence you have now. I think it would be the most honest thing to do and would save the forum the most work.

Does something surprise you? This is an ordinary useless forum troll who sits with an alt account. He is scared to present his main account due to his cowardly nature. Most of his words can be safely divided by zero, since they have no basis whatsoever.
I would point out that people can (and do) report plagiarism anonymously via the report to moderator button.

I am not sure I agree with your stance, but I think he likely is hoping to get merit from his public reports.
He saw someone succeed by getting into one of the most paid campaigns, and immediately ran to look for violations from them in order to harm them as much as possible. I would not be surprised if after Dave F got into ChipMixer, then this troll ran immediately to look for plagiarism from him.
I can only speculate if what you are saying is true, and it may be true. However, there are some people who look for plagiarism by people that disagree with them, and/or that are critical of them.

Plagiarism had gone unnoticed and unhandled for such a long time that some people have weaponized it.
1251  Other / Meta / Re: Copy/paste only with source on: September 05, 2021, 05:32:44 PM
If you are not putting your opinion, why would you only copy/paste this?
A lot of times, some people think that when they post a long article here, that they will be given merits.
In the past, people were given merit for these types of posts. Often, the source link is in very small font, and what appears to be a useful post is actually something with no original content from a single source.

If an article is copied, and there is not sufficient additional content or commentary, the post will likely be against copyright laws. I don't think the forum attracts enough traffic, nor does this happen enough for most news organizations to really care about this happening here though.
1252  Other / Meta / Re: Do you think some plagiarism can happen "by mistake"? on: September 05, 2021, 03:50:57 PM

But IMO, it could be a case-to-case basis and if you can see the (accused being plagiarized) post of Mpamaegbu, the intention could be possible is to show a reference or content that come from the online article (or somewhere else) but the big mistake is, Mpamaegbu forgot to include the link or must be quoted it from the original author, which is this is very strong evidence by suspecting of being a plagiarist.  So IMO, that could be a mistake by him by not being accredited to the original author.
There are a lot of people who basically copy entire articles in a thread and have a citation at the bottom of the post. This is not plagiarism, but IMO is another problem as the post has virtually no original content nor commentary. The above is often not even someone summarizing an article, it is copying entire articles.
1253  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: [Lightning] The Lightning Address on: September 05, 2021, 02:21:37 PM
today i saw a new development in the lightning space: https://lightningaddress.com/

tldr: send sats to the known email address format

it is a combination of lnurl and a http server. some people who use letsencrypt might know the .well-known/acme-challenge endpoint to get certificates for your website. lightningaddress uses the .well-known/lnurlp/username endpoint to generate lnurl invoices
According to the documentation, for all intents and purposes, you must be hosting your own email server in order to use this program. You cannot use popular email providers such as gmail (unless such email provider decides to offer this type of service in the future).

I don't see many email providers offering this type of service due to the increased risk of account hijackings. The majority of email services are intended for personal use, and this type of service is really for business users.
1254  Other / Meta / Re: 9 posts by 0 user deleted? on: September 05, 2021, 01:31:03 PM
Clearly, either code was "stepped on" or code was changed that interferes with accurate reporting of deletions from self-moderated threads.
I'm not exactly clear on what you mean by stepped on, but I'm assuming that means changed by Theymos or someone with admin privileges.

Yes, I was trying to say the code was unintentionally changed, either because the code that displays the number of users was changed, or because the output of code that the above display code depends on was changed.

Per theymos above, this has to do with old deleted posts being removed from the forum database. Depending on when this was implemented in relation to when the feature to display the number of posts deleted from a self mod thread was implemented, either I was right, or theymos did not consider certain edge cases when writing the code for this feature.
1255  Other / Meta / Re: Do you think some plagiarism can happen "by mistake"? on: September 05, 2021, 01:10:00 PM
What do you think? Is plagiarism always intentional or can there be some specific cases in which it is not? It is not clear to me.
I think Mpamaegbu likely intentionally plagiarized his post. The post in question is several years old, and I am not sure if he was participating in a signature campaign at the time. IMO he is sufficiently established of a forum member that a temp ban, rather than a permaban would probably be in order.

Although none of the cases in the OP apply, there are potential situations in which plagiarism could be "unintentional". For example, someone could copy content from multiple sources to make a well-rounded argument, and not properly cite said sources. If someone can quote many sources to make a coherent post that is informative and on-topic, I would be okay with allowing them to receive a warning. The sources would need to be diverse enough to show the person was putting in substantial effort into his post, and the post needs to be something that the average user reading the subject thread would find interesting, and not believe to be nonsense.

Unless posts were deleted prior to loyceV scraping them, the number of posts deleted count is likely off as well.
Theymos enhanced selfmod 6 months before I started archiving. Based on the archive from last year, I think the post count is correct.
Two of the now-deleted posts were scrapped in 2021, according to your site. If they were deleted post-beginning-of-2021, the number of posts deleted number is inaccurate.
1258  Other / Meta / Re: Security bounties on: September 05, 2021, 07:28:08 AM
Or was SMF 1.1.19 modified in some way or another?
There are several features added to the SMF 1.1.19 codebase, and I don't believe the code for these features is public. Some of the modifications to SMF 1.1.19 may have been to close security holes/issues.

While following the terms in the OP (which primarily consist of the requirement that PenTesters not cause disruption to the forum, and not access 3rd party data, you can find security weaknesses in the forum software, and collect the respective bounties.
1259  Other / Meta / Re: 9 posts by 0 user deleted? on: September 05, 2021, 07:12:43 AM
It is probably some sort of the forum script's bug. If you google it, you'll see it has never happened to anyone else.
I don't believe the disclosure of the number of posts deleted by x forum members in self-moderated threads is a standard SMF feature. So if you were to use SMF "out of the box" a user with a self-moderated thread would not have this information presented.

Clearly, either code was "stepped on" or code was changed that interferes with accurate reporting of deletions from self-moderated threads.
1260  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Twitter seems likely to integrate tipping using Bitcoin. on: September 05, 2021, 06:26:25 AM
I would also find it very unlikely that Twitter will encourage using bitcoin on its platform. Doing so would create a lot of risks, one of which being that it gives people direct financial incentives to hack Twitter accounts. After Twitter was hacked last year, they prevented (verified?) users from posting bitcoin addresses in their tweets.

Well, it seems the direction is toward integrating Bitcoin to the social media platform. There are always risks, of course. But a hack is a hack and even if there is no Bitcoin address on the profile, just like when the 2020 hack happened, the risk is still existent and damage could still be done. Even the current Tip Jar feature is risky enough if a hack occurs. The hacker could also change the user's PayPal, Cash App, Venmo, and other addresses.
PayPal, etc transactions are reversible, so if a twitter account hack results in someone sending payments to one of these types of accounts, the payments can be reversed. This is not true for bitcoin nor LN payments.

Like I mentioned, twitter reduced the future potential benefit to a similar hack as what took place in 2020 by preventing users from being able to post bitcoin addresses.
