21  Economy / Trading Discussion / how do I transfer bitcoin gold to binance.com? on: November 28, 2017, 06:38:37 PM
I have some BCG as a result of the fork. I use armory for my bitcoin wallet.

I'd like to exchange the BCG for another altcoin on binance.com. What's the simplest way to deposit my BCG on binance?

Thanks.
22  Economy / Trading Discussion / want to diversity; what coin to buy? on: November 27, 2017, 03:44:52 PM
Hello folks.

I already own BTC and ETH. Looking to add a 3rd altcoin. Don't care about feasability as a currency; this is a speculative investment.

My candidates are litecoin, monero and iota. Which would you recommend?
23  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: taking some money off the table - what to sell? on: November 27, 2017, 02:19:08 PM
That's a smart thing to do. Diversifying your portfolio. Don't put all your eggs in one basket. That's what they say. Go look at https://coinmarketcap.com
I consider top 10 cryptocurrencies as good investment options especially Ethereum.
Ethereum is undervalued but good to hold for long term because it has a good future.
Bitcoin cash is good also. Better keep it. Keep Bitcoin also. Maybe 50% for Bitcoin and 50% for altcoins since Bitcoin is really dominating the market and altcoins can fail. Here are other good altcoins to invest IMO.

1. Iota
2. Neo
3. OMG

Good luck.

I also think diversification is wise. My current holdings are 75% btc and 25% eth.

I'm actually planning on buying a third altcoin this week. I was going to go with litecoin; is there a reason these other coins are a better choice?
24  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: taking some money off the table - what to sell? on: November 27, 2017, 02:17:28 PM
Thanks for the suggestions.

My purchases have occurred at gdax/coinbase, which do not currently support selling cash/gold. Anybody want to recommend an exchange that does?
25  Economy / Trading Discussion / taking some money off the table - what to sell? on: November 27, 2017, 01:57:59 PM
I purchased some bitcoin back in June, so I have equal number of bitcoin, bitcoin cash and bitcoin gold.

If I'm looking to sell enough to recoup my original investment (about 20% of current value), which of the 3 would you suggest I sell?

Thanks.
26  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / couple questions regarding bitcoin cash on: August 04, 2017, 11:59:12 AM
Hello folks.

The first question is pretty straight forward: if I wanted to determine the value of my bitcoin holdings (which were obtained before the 8/1 fork), the answer is (number of bitcoins) * (bitcoin value) + (number of bitcoins) * (bitcoin cash value), correct?

Second - are people making an effort to sell their bitcoin cash before the price falls? For argument's sake, let's say bitcoin cash is at its highest value right now. If I have access to the private keys of my bitcoin wallet, should I be making an effort to sell the associated bitcoin cash?

Thanks.
27  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: any reason not to use same Armory wallet on more than one machine? on: June 08, 2017, 12:21:31 PM
You mean using the same private keys? Yes you are essentially using the same "wallet". Another way to thank about Bitcoin is really you are not holding any "coins". All that you are "holding" is in the blockchain which you control through your private key.

Yes, the same private keys. Thanks for confirming my understanding.

So, in this scenario, I could send/receive bitcoins from either Armory installation, in any order, without any problems?
28  Bitcoin / Armory / any reason not to use same Armory wallet on more than one machine? on: June 08, 2017, 04:23:07 AM
Hi folks.

Let's say I install Armory on a machine and create a wallet, then create a digital backup. I then restore that digital backup to another machine running Armory.

Do I now have 2 distinct wallets, or do they appear as one to the bitcoin network? Can I send/receive from either machine without issue?

Thanks.
29  Bitcoin / Wallet software / light weight desktop bitcoin wallet? on: June 04, 2017, 01:28:21 PM
Can anybody recommend a desktop wallet (hopefully supported on linux) that doesn't consume a ton of resources? Something like myetherwallet would be great, but it doesn't have to run in a browser.

Currently using armory, but the complete processing of the blockchain whenever you need to use it is becoming a pain.

Thanks.
30  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: backup up wallets - are web based services deemed acceptable? on: June 03, 2017, 11:29:11 AM
You should not keep your back up of your wallets only in web based services like cloud of mega, google etc. You should keep a few copies of these back ups in some usb-s cd-s and other good storage device. You can opt to shrink your hard drive and create a small partition of 10 GB only to keep all your back ups.

I already have local copies. I'm thinking about cloud storage for the case where there is a fire and all local copies (paper and digital) are destroyed.
31  Economy / Service Discussion / backup up wallets - are web based services deemed acceptable? on: June 02, 2017, 06:23:58 PM
Hi folks.

So, making multiple backups of bitcoin or ether wallets...if the wallet is encrypted, is it acceptable to store a backup on something like dropbox or google drive? Assuming a very strong password, what is the potential drawback of doing this?

Thanks.
32  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: want to buy & hold bitcoin & ethereum - software choices on: June 02, 2017, 02:02:21 PM
Thanks for the reply.
The linux machine is not strictly offline. Given it is a linux machine, I'm not too concerned about hacking/malware. This machine also is not used all that often.
Related question - where are the private keys stored? Are they in the respective wallet files themselves?
It the private keys can be obtained from the wallet files, however you would need the password (assuming that you encrypted the private keys, which I would highly recommend) to actually obtain the private keys.
*Edit: Grammar

Yes, both wallets are encrypted, so I consider the existing security sufficient, although not perfect.

Thanks for all your help.
33  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: want to buy & hold bitcoin & ethereum - software choices on: June 02, 2017, 01:47:55 PM

Just wanted to provide an update - I have successfully purchased bitcoin and ether on coinbase.com. After purchase, I then send/transfer ether to an ethereum wallet on my linux laptop using myetherwallet.com. I send/transfer bitcoin to my bitcoin wallet on my linux laptop which is running Armory. Both wallets are backed up via paper and a USB drive.

Just wanted to know if anybody sees a problem with this procedure, or if I can consider this an appropriate setup. Thanks!
You should be good. I’m assuming that the “Linux Laptop” is the mostly offline computer of yours, otherwise there would be a risk of hacking/malware obtaining your private keys. Regardless, it’s still a pretty foolproof setup.

Thanks for the reply.

35  Economy / Exchanges / purchase bitcoins; ACH from bank account, United States on: May 30, 2017, 02:17:59 PM
Can somebody please recommend a site for buying BTC (and ideally ETH) where funds can be transferred from a US bank account? Hopefully with low fees and decent responsiveness?

I've signed up w/ Coinbase, but I am unimpressed. I've read many negative comments, and it has taken 4+ business days just for them to deposit the verification funds into my bank account.

Thanks.
36  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: want to buy & hold bitcoin & ethereum - software choices on: May 30, 2017, 12:01:20 AM
My question is - what is the simplest method of cold storage?
The best way to get secure cold storage would be to:
1. Download a linux distro and burn it to a CD
2. Download a copy of walletgenerator.net and put in on a thumb drive
3. Boot up the Live CD, insert the thumb drive and generate a paper wallet (if you plan to keep a digital copy be sure to add a password to it and keep the password on paper)
4. Print out your wallet or save it to your thumb drive

If you follow those steps you’ll have a very secure and easy to use cold paper wallet.

This is close to what I've already done, although I had an existing linux machine which I used (and is not offline, so not perfectly secure, but close enough for me).

The heart of my question was: is there a single wallet app for the linux environment I could use for both eth and btc. I've installed both EthereumWallet and Amory, which both seem to be full nodes. Seems like overkill to an altcoin noob like myself, but maybe that's as simple as it gets.

Anybody else want to suggest Jaxx?
37  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: want to buy & hold bitcoin & ethereum - software choices on: May 29, 2017, 07:10:00 PM
Yep.  For that kind of purpose, Jaxx would be ideal.  You could also try depositing some Bitcoin that you bought into an altcoin exchange like Bittrex and then withdrawing from there into your wallet, which would avoid potentially high fees from Jaxx (I think their fees are 1% or something - integration with Shapeshift).

Is bittrex a good exchange for buying (I'm in the US)? I'd like to use ACH from a bank account...I had been looking at coinbase.

Hello folks.

I am looking to purchase bitcoin and ethereum as investments. In other words, I don't plan on using them to pay for services or goods.

My question is - what is the simplest method of cold storage? Is there a single desktop app I could use that supports both currencies? Is Jaxx the answer for this use case?

Thanks.
Well, you can use coinbase if you are scared that you can lose private key or something like that. However, I suggest you should use electrum and myetherwallet

I want to use cold storage - I'm not gonna use an online wallet.
39  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: want to buy & hold bitcoin & ethereum - software choices on: May 29, 2017, 02:40:30 PM
Not really.  Jaxx is good for someone who uses multiple coins on a regular basis, but if you want cold storage and long-term storage you'd be best off creating separate paper wallets for each coin.  You could have the paper wallets in safes, bank deposit boxes or buried, to give some examples.

You could also try using a TREZOR with multiple passphrases including a decoy.  Then you're quite safe from 5-dollar wrench attacks, hacking and nearly any other problems I can think of.

I'm pretty sure you can store Bitcoin and Ether in the same TREZOR, using MyEtherWallet as well as their regular one.

It all depends on the level of security you want.  If you get Jaxx it will probably be okay, but you're susceptible to viruses and you might not know if something happens since you wouldn't be accessing it regularly.

Thanks for the reply.

A little more info - my wallet platform is linux. I've installed Armory and EthereumWallet. I was just wondering if there was a simpler option than parallel software for both currencies. It would be convenient to just purchase one or the other and then convert some amount to the other, and also to manage both from a single wallet.
