21  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Overclocking Water-cooled GPU's on: June 03, 2013, 11:02:43 PM
Right. The memory is currently underclocked. The stock is 1375 I believe. I haven't used afterburner yet, but cgminer only allows me to keep it within 150Mhz below the engine speed.  I've never messed with voltage before.  Any suggestions on the amounts I should increase it by?

You always want to increase voltage in the lowest increments possible to keep it stable.  Your cards might even be voltage locked.  I'm not sure which ones are and aren't.

Be careful messing with the voltage though.  Chances are that you wouldn't fry it with afterburner default ranges, but as was said, keep an eye on your temperatures.

Also, with the newer AMD drivers, they force you to keep your memory speed within 150Mhz of the core clock.  There's no way around this except by using older AMD drivers, and an old version of Afterburner.  There's some threads out there about this.

I'll refer you to eocf.com (forums.extremeoverclocking.com) to read more about overclocking.  Read through the stickies there.  That's where I learned to overclock my computers 10 years ago.   Wink

hardforum.com is another good overclocking forum.

In case you missed the update on the pool webpage:

"21.05.2013
Bug in bitcoind caused many invalid blocks generated in recent hours. Thanks to cooperation with bitcoin developers, a bugfix has been deployed. Pool is now back in normal operation."

Now I have a question for you. Someone tolled me that if I overclock my cards I need to increase the voltage. Even if that is not necessary for stability. You just need to or you will damaged it. Is that right? It sounds wrong to me but I'm no expert...

If you are stable, then there is no need to increase voltage.  (You might have some issues that don't cause the card to stop working completely that require more voltage however.)

It will definitely not ever do damage to run at too low voltage.  Running at too high of a voltage is where you might do physical damage to your cards.

25  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: I am thinking of mining, but wary of downloading so many programs. Need advice on: May 21, 2013, 07:59:16 PM
No wonder you had to throw out those computers (I don't even know who does this due to virus infection?)..

Unfortunately, quite a few people do this.  They load up on 100s of silly little programs that all want to load on startup or malware of some sort until their computers slow down to a crawl.  Then they buy a new computer because they don't know any better.

I've had people tell me they "...had to get rid of their computer because of a virus."  I just giggle, tell them that wasn't necessary and try to talk about something other than computers at that point.

I wanted to run my monitor off the integrated motherboard graphics, and devote my 7850's to pure mining. I can direct my BIOS to use the IGD. And my two 7850's even show up in gpuz. But cgminer says it doesn't detect any graphics cards.

Motherboard is MSI Z77A-GD65 GAMING. They stopped selling the vanilla Z77A-GD65. Latest BIOS.

Try using a dummy plug on your 7850s.

Did the OP ever get this to work?

I made the same assumption that plugging in the second, un-used input to my monitor would be the same as a dummy plug.  It is not.

I'm mining with my GTX580 and HD7950.  I had both plugged into the same monitor, but I could only control the clocks on the 7950 if it was the *only* monitor plugged in.  I just made a dummy plug for the HD7950 and now I can control my clocks with only the 580 plugged in!   Cheesy

I'll bet a dummy plug is need for the OP as well.

It takes 4 hours logged in and 5 posts.  However it is not instantaneous when you get to that.  It will take some time for the server to update your status.  I'm not sure what it is, but it's not long.

I heard about bitcoin over the past year or two, in random science news article headlines that I just glanced over and didn't read.  Then a couple months ago I finally read some article about bitcoin linked by ahem*slashdot*ahem mentioning mining.  Then I looked up what mining is and starting reading about the history of bitcoin.

Then I immediately got depressed that I've been building high-end gaming rigs and running "charity" distributed computing projects for years, when I could have been making money!  Huh

Then I got more bummed that on my last build, I built with a watercooled gtx580!  Angry

Now I'm just fascinated by it due to my libertarian political/Austrian economic viewpoints.

Also mining with my newly acquired 7950. Smiley

Be aware though, that cooling off 5 GPUs, there still will be a considerable amount of fan noise from the radiator.  You'll also still need fans for the rest of your system components.  Also, be aware that fans which list in their specs a "noise" rating, measure that with the fan in the open air.  It will be quite a bit louder when you put a restriction on it such as your radiator or case.

That said, water will do an excellent job removing heat if you have decent setup.

EDIT: Also with 5 GPUs, unless you have a really good pump, you'll most likely need two.

34  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How dangerous is mining for your GPU? on: May 19, 2013, 07:04:47 PM
I've been running folding@home 24/7 for about 10 years now on my CPUs and GPUs.  Well, not quite 10 years on GPUs. I don't remember when the GPU client first came out.  However, I've run it on at least 4 GPUs 24/7 though.

I always overclock everything (CPU/GPU/system memory) as high as I can go and still run Prime95 for 24 hours stable, and then I lower the clocks down just a little.  I used to game a lot, so I would test GPU overclocks running 3dMark in a loop for an hour or so, and then just play various games ALL day long and check for artifacting or crashes.

I would usually not run folding@home for a month or 2 in the summer simply because it would make my apartment too hot!  But in all that time, I have never fried a piece of hardware.  I usually upgrade every 2-3 years just so I have some new hardware to tweak. Smiley
35  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I have 5 posts now and 16hrs login time, why I am still a newbie on: May 19, 2013, 06:28:39 PM
This rule is really annoying... Why it has to be this way?

The rule is in place to cut down on spam.

However, I think the more relevant reason is to encourage newbies (like myself) to read through the forums before creating new threads to ask questions that have been asked 1000's of times before.  There are a lot of internet users out there that (oddly) are too damn lazy to use a search function.

I like the 4 hour rule.  It's obviously not a perfect solution, but I think it does more good than harm.  The 5 post rule though seems silly to me.  One could just create a new thread and reply to himself 4 times?  That part seems to encourage pointless posting.

Neither.  Both wake up and piss on the Constitution on a daily basis.

Libertarians might actually dig this country out of the ditch.
37  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is the best way to mine bitcoin? on: May 13, 2013, 10:59:29 PM
There are many ways to mine bitcoin these days, however, lots of them are spam (or not worth of your time). For example, bitcoinplus charges a big transaction fee just to withdraw the earnings. There are some websites where you can claim daily winning but it is very small amount. How do you guys mine your bitcoins? Is there really no way to mine bitcoin without purchasing hardware dedicated for mining?

Please share what you think. If you had some bad experience, please post it as well so other people can avoid it. Thank you for your contribution!

"Mining" bitcoins involving crunching numbers with GPUs (video cards) and that is now slowly evolving into dedicated ASIC machines to do the same task, but more efficiently and with much more number crunching power.  This is how new coins are "minted" and come into circulation.

Any other method of acquiring bitcoins is just free trade (or scams), not mining.
