21  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blockchain is Crappy Technology and a Bad Vision for the Future on: April 13, 2018, 03:18:14 AM
Idk why but i find the passage about food safety and trust pointless and dumb. No one said that the blockchain can be applied to everything, and I for one always stress that it's pretty much suitable in almost all banking and finance-related services. Any uses beyond that scope should be highly experimental and may not work flawlessly. In part, I somehow agree with the author since not everything can have the blockchain integrated onto its systems. Most people regard bitcoin as a one piece solution to all the world's problems, but it simply isn't going to happen.

Yes, it's also important to know that blockchain is not the end all be all to all of our problems. Part of his criticism here is that people are waving blockchain around like its a magic wand, and I can understand why that itself may be an issue if we are to promote this type of technology to the public--especially to a public that still does not completely understand blockchain or how it works.
22  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blockchain is Crappy Technology and a Bad Vision for the Future on: April 13, 2018, 03:15:45 AM
author is obviously a fool so why bother quoting such an imbecile here and cluttering the board?

his natural limits are not primed to cope with comprehending fully a decentralised trustless end to end arena

It's important to get arguments from both sides. Not everything should be pro-bitcoin and blockchain if we are to be critical thinkers, so I am mainly curious as to what types of counterarguments people have here. I put all of these quotes because I know most people aren't actually going to read the article. Frankly speaking, most of the people we debate bitcoin and blockchain with don't fully understand the technology. Dismissing their arguments is not constructive. It's more important to know how to word a counterargument that might actually teach the other party something. This is the time we need to spend educating people, despite the few years the technology has been around many people still barely even know the basics.
23  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blockchain is Crappy Technology and a Bad Vision for the Future on: April 13, 2018, 03:13:42 AM
The only statement of this author is that the blockchain is "trustless" and all the centralized "middleman" systems are trusted. And he doesn`t have any real proof to support his claims.I have to say that the blockchain technology still isn`t perfect, but it`s evolving and improving.
Judging a not yet perfected technology for it`s flaws is totally stupid.
30 years ago, there were people, who were saying that the cellphones are a shitty technology and they don`t have any future. This guy is like one of those people.

Yup. Exactly. He needs to go back and read what people were saying about the Internet back during its inception. I don't understand this concept of throwing out the baby with the bathwater just because flaws exist.
24  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blockchain is Crappy Technology and a Bad Vision for the Future on: April 13, 2018, 03:11:47 AM
The writer of the article is very confused. He says, " three successive top bitcoin exchanges have been hacked " and then claim that the Blockchain is not trustworthy because of that. These exchanges run their own code and has nothing to do with the Blockchain, other than them using Bitcoin as a currency. < This is like someone blaming the central banks, because they issued money and that money got stolen, when Massmart was robbed >  Roll Eyes

He has to go back to Google to do some more research on exchanges and how the Blockchain fits into that partnership.  Roll Eyes

This is a good point, people really confuse the security of bitcoin/crypto and the mismanagement of exchanges. These are two different things. An exchange centralizes crypto/blockchain, which in itself is going against the principle of what blockchain is, a decentralized digital ledger.
25  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I’m out on: April 12, 2018, 05:45:26 AM
I had a blood clot on my brain in late January and stroked out.By the time I got out of hospitals rehab a month later I’m seeing 85% losses, with no end in site. I can’t ride this rollercoaster any lower. I’ll be happy to escape with some profits now rather than ending up underwater. Good luck to all.

Definitely don't buy/invest in bitcoin if you're doing it for profit. Look at ICOs instead for quick money. Investing in bitcoin should be about accumulating crypto, not fiat.
26  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blockchain is Crappy Technology and a Bad Vision for the Future on: April 12, 2018, 05:43:06 AM
While this article also briefly discusses how bitcoin isn't a very functionable currency (in terms of what is believed there is to gain using bitcoin over fiat currencies), it mostly talks about the blockchain itself. Perhaps this isn't the best place to put a discussion about blockchain, but it is related to bitcoin. Though I'll reiterate this is more of a discussion about the actual usefulness of blockchain (the digital ledger/technology behind the cryptocurrency bitcoin).
27  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Blockchain is Crappy Technology and a Bad Vision for the Future on: April 12, 2018, 05:03:30 AM
Blockchain is not only crappy technology but a bad vision for the future

Blockchain is not only crappy technology but a bad vision for the future. Its failure to achieve adoption to date is because systems built on trust, norms, and institutions inherently function better than the type of no-need-for-trusted-parties systems blockchain envisions. That’s permanent: no matter how much blockchain improves it is still headed in the wrong direction.

The author is a self-proclaimed "Whatever the opposite of a futurist is".

Some of his points:

Quote
There is no single person in existence who had a problem they wanted to solve, discovered that an available blockchain solution was the best way to solve it, and therefore became a blockchain enthusiast.

Quote
People treat blockchain as a “futuristic integrity wand”—wave a blockchain at the problem, and suddenly your data will be valid. For almost anything people want to be valid, blockchain has been proposed as a solution. It’s true that tampering with data stored on a blockchain is hard, but it’s false that blockchain is a good way to create data that has integrity.

Quote
You actually see it over and over again. Blockchain systems are supposed to be more trustworthy, but in fact they are the least trustworthy systems in the world. Today, in less than a decade, three successive top bitcoin exchanges have been hacked, another is accused of insider trading, the demonstration-project DAO smart contract got drained, crypto price swings are ten times those of the world’s most mismanaged currencies, and bitcoin, the “killer app” of crypto transparency, is almost certainly artificially propped up by fake transactions involving billions of literally imaginary dollars.

Quote
Even the most die-hard crypto enthusiasts prefer in practice to rely on trust rather than their own crypto-medieval systems. 93% of bitcoins are mined by managed consortiums, yet none of the consortiums use smart contracts to manage payouts. Instead, they promise things like a “long history of stable and accurate payouts.” Sounds like a trustworthy middleman!

Quote
People who actually care about food safety do not adopt blockchain because trusted is better than trustless. Blockchain’s technology mess exposes its metaphor mess — a software engineer pointing out that storing the data a sequence of small hashed files won’t get the mango-pickers to accurately report whether they sprayed pesticides is also pointing out why peer-to-peer interaction with no regulations, norms, middlemen, or trusted parties is actually a bad way to empower people.

Quote
As a society, and as technologists and entrepreneurs in particular, we’re going to have to get good at cooperating — at building trust, and, at being trustworthy. Instead of directing resources to the elimination of trust, we should direct our resources to the creation of trust—whether we use a long series of sequentially hashed files as our storage medium or not.

What say you guys? (In the most unbiased way possible; I know this is a forum dedicated to everything bitcoin, but we should try to think outside of the box.)

Back up phrases? Otherwise there isn't much you can do at this point.

Other option is to visit a crypto hypnotist: https://news.bitcoin.com/forgot-the-key-to-your-bitcoin-wallet-you-need-a-crypto-hypnotist/, but they charge a pretty penny.
29  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Salary Paid in Bitcoin - would you do it? on: April 10, 2018, 07:35:25 AM
I think we still have a ways to go before people in our current generation take cryptocurrency as a form of salary when most people are still trying to grasp what a bitcoin is and how it works. The younger generation will definitely be more likely to accept this.
30  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How do you keep your wallet data safe? on: April 08, 2018, 06:25:16 AM
The safest way is to store your coins offline (cold storage), as opposed to online (hot storage). Also, NEVER store your coins on an exchange. If the security of the exchange if compromised, your coins are gone. Some exchanges have better security than others, but if you end up with your coins/tokens on an exchange that stores most of their crypto in hot storage you are SOL if things go down south.

I wouldn't recommend using a paper wallet unless you know what you're doing, and even if you do it's better to just get a hardware wallet. I have heard horror stories about people generating their own paper wallet and getting all of their bitcoins lost/stolen. So yea, just don't do it, especially if you're still trying to figure out how best to store your digital assets. I found a pretty good article on steemit about paper wallets, which might give some insight as to why people may have issues with them: https://steemit.com/bitcoin/@michaelmatthews/warning-how-i-lost-bitcoins-using-a-paper-wallet.

And here's a tutorial on how to use the Ledger Nano S. You don't need this one specifically, but the tutorial looks pretty good. Simple and to the point: https://boxmining.com/hardware-wallet-guide-ledger-nano-s/
31  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / What do you think about the future of crypto in China? on: April 04, 2018, 09:28:02 AM
Crypto Is A Top Priority for China This Year

Quote
The People’s Bank of China (PBoC) has listed cryptocurrencies as one of its chief priorities for the year as it seeks to strengthen the renminbi and ramp up its capital controls.

In a statement published March 28, the PBoC — China’s central bank — said that intended to “carry out the rectification of various types of virtual currencies” in an attempt to reinforce regulatory policies that it implemented last year to restrict cryptocurrency trading.

I am not going to copy and paste the entire article, because I think the above gives the main gist of the story, so...

Read more: https://www.ccn.com/cryptocurrencies-a-top-priority-for-china-in-2018-pboc-report/

We might not like the idea of regulating cryptocurrencies (as it goes against the idea of decentralization), but regulation is better than outright banning them (yes, I know they can't be "banned", but it makes it a heck of a lot more difficult to buy and trade when they are banned). It seems news on China recently has been inferring crypto might be in China's future, though other sources say otherwise. What do you guys think?

ETH definitely the better option. If has not already been emphasized in the group, I am emphasizing this now.

34  Other / Beginners & Help / Explain Bitcoin Like I’m Five on: March 30, 2018, 10:15:48 AM
I'll keep it short and simple.

If you're interested in bitcoin you should do the research before you invest so you don't end up panic-selling along with everyone else. A great resource is this article on Medium: https://medium.freecodecamp.org/explain-bitcoin-like-im-five-73b4257ac833. A little old, but still a valuable resource. A lot of us who get into bitcoin kind of forget about the good 101 resources for people who are new to bitcoin, and the more talks I give on the subject at conferences, the more I realize we still need to be sharing the A, B, C's of bitcoin. I am a little surprised this article wasn't posted here already, so if it was--my apologies.
35  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / 2017 Global Cryptocurrency Benchmarking Study on: March 29, 2018, 03:38:32 AM
This study is definitely worth checking out if you want to keep yourself informed, many big name crypto organizations (nearly 150 in total) contributed to the compilation of this study.

Quote
This Global Cryptocurrency Benchmarking Study is an inaugural research focused on alternative payment systems and digital assets. Led by Dr Garrick Hileman, it is the first study of its kind to holistically examine the burgeoning global cryptocurrency industry and its key constituents, which include exchanges, wallets, payments and mining. The findings are both striking and thought-provoking.

By our count, over 300 academic articles have been published on various aspects of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies over the past several years. However, these works tend to take a narrow focus. To our knowledge this is the first global cryptocurrency study based on nonpublic ‘of-chain’ data. We designed the study to present an empirical picture of the current state of this still maturing industry, and to explore how cryptocurrencies are being used today. The findings from this study will be useful to industry, academics, policymakers, media, and anyone seeking to better understand the cryptocurrency landscape.

This study would not have been possible without the support and participation from nearly 150 cryptocurrency companies and individuals that contributed data, many of which have elected to have their logos displayed in this report. This study also greatly benefited from suggestions and support we received from many individuals and firms we recognize in the Acknowledgements. We are grateful for the trust placed by study participants in the University of Cambridge research team. We are looking forward to continuing and expand

36  Other / Off-topic / Google's AI voice synthesizer sounds eerily more human on: March 28, 2018, 08:04:50 AM
For those interested in AI technology developments check out this story:

Google’s new AI voice synthesizer, a service named Cloud Text-to-Speech, will be available for businesses and developers that want to integrate voice synthesis in apps, websites or virtual assistants.

Traditionally, voice synthesizers use what is called concatenate synthesis, in which the program pieces individual syllables together to form words and sentences. While this language is understandable, it doesn’t have the imperfections of human speech that make it sound realistic, despite its development over the years.

In comparison, Google’s new AI voice synthesizer is powered by WaveNet, which uses machine learning to generate audio from scratch. It analyzes a huge database of human speech and re-creates them at a rate of 24,000 samples per second. The end result is a voice with subtleties like lip smacks and accents!

Check out the full story here (includes audio samples of WaveNet vs. a traditional audio synthesizer): https://www.theverge.com/2018/3/27/17167200/google-ai-speech-tts-cloud-deepmind-wavenet

I don't think I hear much of a difference in the English version however, maybe something is wrong with my hearing. Does anyone else hear a big difference? The Japanese sample definitely shows a big difference. I am kind of excited for this because I have been wondering when that very robotic sound in synthesizers would be programmed to be a bit more natural.
37  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Few useful sites for trading, studying, getting info on: March 28, 2018, 06:52:43 AM
I would add

www.livecoinwatch.com

Due to the recent claims of fraudulent activity (manipulation) by coinmarketcap.com, I would not recommend adding them.

I also like

www.solume.io

which attempts to compare social media activity and sentiment of different coins compared to their recent price movements. Since alot of the market is based off sentiment, it can be useful. I'm just trying to determine how accurate their calculation of sentiment is.

Curious about the fraudulent activity. Any links to back this up?
38  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to Secure Bitcoins? on: March 28, 2018, 06:45:35 AM
Software
Keep your software up to date. A wallet running on non-updated bitcoin software can be a soft target for hackers. The latest version of wallet software will have a better security system in place thereby increasing the safety of your bitcoins. If your software is updated with the latest security fixes and protocol, you may evade a big crisis because of the enhanced security of the wallet. Consistently update your mobile device or computer operating systems and software to make your bitcoins safer.

This article is probably the closest to the truth that you are actually going to get: https://www.ccn.com/bitcoin-provides-freedom-says-new-pboc-chief-as-china-opens-doors-to-27-trillion-payments-market/, and it says nothing about legalizing ICOs. It just notes that the newly appointed central bank head is a fan of bitcoin.
