Can someone refer me to academic papers on the limitations of Rational Choice Theory for understanding complex social systems? I am trying to understand the Tragedy of the Commons and I want a more suitable model of human motivation and of social systems than a model based on aggregate individual social transactions.

Please install version 0.25. 1. To start, try to restart the computer. Ok, it was 25.1. I should have been more specific. So after a reboot it's running well and fully synched. If I have to shut it down, how do I do that safely? |

Downloaded and ran version 25.
When I saw how long it would take to sync, I stopped it with Control-C and then clicking the red X on the form.
Downloaded a Data folder from three days ago and replaced the original data folder. Deleted the Wallet folder.
On restart, get a message that says "STARTUP ERROR! Network port 9084 already in use!"
What can I do?

Good question. Off the bat I am 100% pro-encryption and privacy. This is something that we've been giving a considerable amount of contemplation. It is completely inevitable that governments will use IoT ( which is soon all technology ) to acquire information about the world and its inhabitants, this is a given. It is also uncontroversial at this point ( after leaks and official announcements ) to state that governments do indeed force backdoors into software and hardware. In our company this is not a binary issue ( remember we're all about trinary logic  ), there is no simple right or wrong here and it is hard to predict what to do in an instance where governing officials give you the choice of either complying - at least to some extent - to their demands or be out of business, not because of the potential profit loss, but because of the other benefits of what the tech you are creating bring to the world. So in short: it's a complex issue. We will fight hard to keep all our software and hardware untampered, and just like other technology companies are increasingly calling out for: we will be open and transparent about it all the way. I do not want a dystopic future where governments got borderline omnipresence and omnipotence due to the ubiquity of technology, but this is no black/white issue, there are a ton of upsides to traffic monitoring sensors in terms of resolving crime, providing immediate help in emergencies etc. Likewise there is an immeasurable benefit from wearables and implantable health technologies that stream their data directly to healthcare professionals etc. to prevent death and disease and so on and on and on. This is an issue I personally have given a ton of thought, which is why I am on hobby side work on distributed-decentralized identity together with Dominik ( www.composui.com), with the goal of enabling people to keep their data secure and safe, but at the same time useful through something like zero-knowledge-proofs. So you can be sure that this is something I, as the leader of Jinn/IOTA, take very very seriously. But again I want to stress that this is not a black/white issue with simple answers. Even a decade ago, it wouldn't be surprising to hear a scientist say that his or her scientific discoveries were morally, socially, politically, and psychologically neutral. Of course we can quite easily see now that no innovation or genuine discovery happens in a vacuum. But not everyone embraces the responsibility and the complexity of their research and creations. Thank you for such a thoughtful response. My hope is that the knowledge and technology can grow together with the best interests of the community and all who might be affected by it. More than a hope - it is something to which I would like to contribute, though I do not know how at the moment. As you suggest, there are no shortcuts or simple, singular answers when so much is at stake. |

Idea for a decentralized lending library?
How about if you did not have to return a tool, a bike, or a book to a centralized location, but could simply pass it on to whomever had the appropriate Smartphone app?
Already I can think of some problems with this, but perhaps there are solutions.
One problem I can see: If you have to identify and meet someone who has the thing you want, how do you do it safely? Perhaps this is a place for a trusted "middleman." This could be a role for a person rather than a location.
Now it's already getting complicated. Maybe this isn't the right kind of system for tools, bikes, and books, but could be used for some other kind of thing?

I am not qualified to weigh in on the technical side of this, but I will vote for a delay to optimize or enhance. Six months from now, no one will remember whether it was launched on time or with several days' or a week's delay.

Remember the early days of NXT on Bitcointalk? So many technical, complex issues discussed by the community and hardly anyone talking about price. It's an amazing piece of work. I thought IOTA would be like that, but a lot of people here are too interested in a quick ROI for having done nothing but participate in the sale.

this looks like a great project, but how can it be monatized.
How can what be monetized? You can create businesses that use "pure Bitcoin" features of Counterparty (assets, trading, broadcasts) or more advanced XCP-enabled features (smart contracts, betting, distributions). How you 'monetize' them is entirely up to you. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you? Counterparty as a project itself is 100% open-source and non-profit, like Bitcoin. You cannot 'monetize' Bitcoin, but you can create projects and exchanges which profit from using it. Does that make sense? Perhaps Stanley_Cold was asking more specifically about how XCP, the currency, not Counterparty, the protocol, has value. |

I guess the Bitcointalk forum isn't their main medium for communicating. It would be nice if Joel or Jef came on here to give us an update, though.
I just checked their Facebook and Twitter feeds, and it looks like they've been quite busy at conferences and getting to know people who might help. While that does not seem to translate yet into viable projects, it does look like this coin is still alive. From what I gather, the biggest hurdles right now are regulatory.
Does anyone else have any information?

The new projects seem to have some real backers, so that is nice to see. Not impressive. There are only a few projects, they have not received much funding, and there is no word on anything else in the pipeline. I don't detect a pulse. Can a principle from SWARM come on here and provide an update or an explanation? |
