21  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty Protocol, Client and Coin (built on Bitcoin) - Official on: March 04, 2014, 12:51:57 AM
thanks for update! so this one:  https://twitter.com/XCPCounterparty is not owned by Counterparty team ?or we just need to follow  a new official twitter account?

Wow! That's a super active Twitter account from the community. Kudos to whoever publishes that feed. Well done.

Has the majority of discourse moved to native channels ?

If we all want to get rich from Counterparty, we need to build more and the conversations on the Counterparty forums seems to be focused on building mainly. Not sure its the majority of discourse, but hopefully a path to profits for everyone?
23  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty Protocol, Client and Coin (built on Bitcoin) - Official on: March 03, 2014, 08:03:01 PM
I updated my proposal for Asset Issuance fees to be reduced to 2 XCP from the current temporary 5XCP that is burned in each asset issuance.

Here: https://forums.counterparty.co/index.php/topic,150.msg1060.html#msg1060

If the community has any comments or views on this request for a change in the temporary asset issuance pricing, will you post your views?  This will cut the cost of asset issuance immediately as we continue to review and propose new approaches to smart property asset fees.

Doesn't it poll the github account directly controlled by the dev also? not sure what all github allows them to see, but just those 2 sites is disappointing here.
Still glad we got the altcoin bump on this one, hope more investors jump in to pick up the slack.
Too bad that second exchange didn't open up. . .
all these changes to the burn fees for transactions makes the DEX hopeless for endusers and paying a central source for trading this altcoin brings us back to square one.

Great ideas though! A dev will surely figure out usable code to do altcoin DEXing eventually.

Kudos to the dev's for thinking this up, so simple of an idea, yet so requiring of coding skills to actually implement. . .

Blockchain.info queries
Regarding the blockchain.info site hits, those were necessary for retrieving an arbitrary account balances as well as unspent outputs (UTXOs) for an arbitrary address. This was only required when we needed to get this information on an address that was not in the local wallet (e.g. for counterwallet itself, as we do not keep web wallet users' addresses in the server's bitcoind wallet). As of our commits to develop this weekend, these blockchain.info calls are no longer necessary, due to us now using Bitpay's Insight daemon, which is a free, open source product that provides an API with similar services and is installed on the local machine, parsing through the blockchain files stored by bitcoind. More info: https://github.com/xnova/counterpartyd_build/blob/develop/docs/SettingUpInsight.rst)

However, regarding this, note that counterpartyd has a new "insight-enable" config setting. By default, on mainnet, this is set to 0 (off), due to the overhead with setting up insight (e.g. it's similar complexity to setting up bitcoind, and takes about 30GB on disk once the mainnet data is indexed -- we didn't want to force doing this on people that just wanted to use counterwalletd to run the GUI on mainnet, for instance). If this setting is off, blockchain will still be used to get the required data (and note this is not a persistent connection, it's just a simple HTTP query as we need to get the data). Moreover, Insight is required to be used on testnet, since blockchain.info's APIs do not support testnet.

I'm glad that we could remove this dependency on blockchain.info. We feel the same way about consulting 3rd party sites in the code of a "decentralized" system like Counterparty. It was a hack at first due to the limitations of bitcoind, and we've been able to move past it this weekend, employing a more proper solution that preserves decentralization (i.e. using insight, which is free, open source, installed locally and works off of the local blockchain data).

Version check (github.com query)

This is a simple (i.e. non-persistent) query to a single .json file on github, to make sure the client is up to date with the most recent major modifications. This was done to avoid forks (i.e. situations where someone starts up old code, and ends up sending out an invalid txn, which is seen as valid by those running counterpartyd on the same old code, but not by people on the newer code, for instance). These are serious situations, and due to the rapid pace of counterpartyd development, this was seen as the most acceptable option, as the file it hits is a) public and b) under version control, in the same location as the code, and c) published/updated in the same manner as the code is (signed push by the devs).

Also, even with this check, note that if the client is NOT up to date, counterpartyd will simply complain and not start. It will NOT automatically update any code, or make any changes.

Moreover, Phantom has just today enhanced the --force flag to avoid this version check, so if you REALLY want to run without this functionality (not recommended!), you can just use --force. Again, we do not want to make people have to have their client check an external 3rd party site. It's just in this case, it's a Really Good Idea that we default to. This check will remain, at least until development has slowed down. We think it's a good idea beyond that though, to avoid forks as much as possible.

Hopefully that clears up some of these concerns. Thanks guys for working with us and being patient as things continue to take form.

Changelog in YO FACE! Yeah!

So would it not be possible for the Bitcoin development team to simply implement all of counterparty features directly into the protocol ? Like say, in version 1.0 ...

And if so would they have any incentive to do so?

Yes. It would be possible and the bitcoin development team is always reviewing altcoins and alt protocols. Their incentives are to protect bitcoin and to protect the bitcoin mining pools. Counterparty neither threatens nor improves these in any significant way to warrant much interest, just right now.
26  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Counterparty Protocol and Client (built on Bitcoin) - Official Thread on: March 02, 2014, 05:55:07 PM

This definitely no sustainable for either the protocol or any business that wishes to build on Counterparty. 5 XCP per asset will mean that we'll soon run out of XCP to burn for asset issuance, given we only have about 2.6 Million XCP outstanding, it will quickly become unprofitable to purchase XCP to issue assets. At this rate we will only have 529, 747.184 possible assets issued on the system when we'd like to have well more than that as there are trillions of dollars in assets yet to be digitized on Counterparty.

I wrote a proposal to change from burning XCP to BTC as the fee for asset issuance here: https://forums.counterparty.co/index.php?topic=150.new#new

+1 to your proposal

The hard-coded fee is temporary.

It's hard to burn BTC without creating unspendable txouts.

Thanks. Cityglut also shared some thoughts and reiterated what you proposed. I updated my proposal with a new approach here: https://forums.counterparty.co/index.php/topic,150.msg1012.html#msg1012

Great, the burn period is over now. It is funny, the last burn is also an advertisement.

Totally burned BTC: 2,130.83722537 BTC
Totally created XCP:  2,648,755.9218 XCP

As the developer mentioned: Try out the distributed exchange if you missed this period.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but how come blockscan now says:
Total XCP Supply:   2,648,735.92

Why the 20 XCP difference?

The difference is from the Asset Issuance fees.

From what I understand it was supposed to be 5 XCP per asset issuance but there was a bug in the calculation (which I already reported very much earlier) which only deducted the divisible amount instead of a full 5 XCP.

Announcement: Counterparty's weekly blog is live!

We will be writing a blog post every week, collating the most important information, so that the community does not have to sift through pages of forum threads to stay up-to-date.

The blog will focus on developments within the Counterparty project and community. Topics may include: significant updates to the reference client, announcement of bounties, interesting uses of the Counterparty protocol, as well as new collaborative efforts with members in- and outside the digital currency community.

On that note, in the first blog post, we announce that the Counterparty team has hired two Bitcoin security experts to audit Counterparty's code! For further information, continue reading here: https://counterparty.co/news/.

Cross-posted from the "blog thread"  on the official Counterparty forums.

Asset Issuance Protocol Question:

I have created an asset and I need to retire it. I am thinking about making it callable, but I don' know the call date and I don't know the call price as yet, but I would like the option to retire the asset if I am in possession of it and to remove it from the Counterparty Asset database.

How is this possible?

I'm sure most think bellebite2014 is an A-hole or whatever. He's a bit rude and doesn't sugar coat. But I hate to admit he cracks me up sometimes.

He is like simon cowell. Although he sounds obnoxious and rude, he's kinda saying things at least I am thinking just in a very unfiltered mean way.

Please try to let up a little bellebite we still have many new potential adopters coming and being too direct or even plain rude will scare some away and

looks bad on XCP.

Watching the gay candy crush ripoff logo and seeing that people are giving BTC away to be on crappy exchanges will sure scare away many people, I agree.
Can't believe people have funds for this, but nothing to support the GUI... Crazy.

The people who invested in the burn during the January AltCoin rage want an early exit and higher returns. Those who invested for the protocol are much quieter and many fewer as you need a real business for the protocol to work and this is very hard.

so i got bored over the weekend and went on odesk and paid a little change to have someone make a banner for one of the reddit pages

this is not the final since he misunderstood the directions and made the candies way too small and a few other errors...  the role of this imagery is to encourage people who are game designers and not finance oriented people. i'm sure the other reddits will have that all covered for you traders.

I like it. Counterparty has many faces.
32  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty Protocol, Client and Coin (built on Bitcoin) - Official on: February 27, 2014, 03:47:05 PM
Protocol Proposal: Would it be possible to implement a function for "Fees" on Assets as we have "Dividends"?

Use Case: Customer purchases a Diamond Asset on Counterparty: DMNDXXEAA. However, the diamond requires storage/insurance fees to be paid in BTC to a Centralized or Decentralized Diamond Storage service. A payment request (BIP70) or otherwise is sent to the BTC Address to request payment each month for .01 BTC in fees.

  • Fees: Paid in BTC
  • Dividends: Paid in XCP
  • Available fees on the buyers address are required for Give=Asset Orders to any other party

Fee set: Fees on assets are set at asset issuance, but can be changed by the issuer. Fees are treated like negative dividends soAn issuer can request fees at anytime as they are able to issue dividends at any time.

Possible Exceptions: User can move fees out of BTC address and the storage will not be paid and DMNDXXEAA will be "destroyed" or decommissioned as unavailable for sale. Also it may not be possible to request fees in Counterparty. This is not how the protocol works, currently. Payments are made in one direction.

Any further thoughts and ideas on this that I may have missed? Does this seem like an appropriate approach to implementing asset-backed coins in Counterparty?

Developers: The API has changed a decent amount in the newest updates to the develop branch. This includes several enhancements, function name changes, changes in semantics, etc.

Please check out the updated API documentation at: http://counterpartyd.readthedocs.org/en/develop/API.html

When will these changes be pushed to master? They appear very comprehensive.
EDIT: It appears they are already in v6.1.

I just did a push. Please update.

- update for counterpartyd 6.1
- adding a passphrase field
- Adding a confirmation before each transaction (temporary, it is planned to make a dialog box that summarizes the parameters of the transaction)

This is the HOTNESS! Wow Jah, you are moving way faster than me as I was working on this idea as well. I will add some issues on the github as you're moving very fast. Great job.

The buyers have lost their BTC, because Counterparty made a centralized decision to roll back the ledger, therefore asymmetrically alter the transactions which previously had occurred. This was done with full knowledge that the people who invested in XPC for the long or the short term would lose their BTC.

We didn't rollback anything. The only thing that we did was close a loophole in the parsing code that allowed for the misidentification of the source of a transaction.

+1 People need to understand what is really going on here.

Perhaps an official press release would help, rather than the aggrieved parties having to trawl through this thread, which consistently refers to the action as a roll-back of the database/ledger.

Perhaps, technically, this is inaccurate,  but the fact is in the real world of commerce, transactions occurred and actions were taken; the effect being that the ledger was altered, and those transactions were invalidated.

Yes and that ledger was the Poloniex Ledger. Here these links might help you so you don't have to troll through the thread

Then the Rollback on Poloniex's centralized ledger.

We could also do a lottery.  Busoni keeps 50% of lottery pot, winning lottery ticket keeps the other 50%

The possibility of hitting the jackpot could be a good incentive for people to buy lottery tickets (donate).

This feels like a good idea that could make-up all or part of the solution.

If we can get a good assortment of "+ 1s" on this idea maybe we can take this as symbolic of a community mandate . And then to implement maybe the Dev team could nominate a trusted member of the community to run the XCP Powerball Lottery (haha), say, once per week or once every two weeks with advertising all over Reddit and the other boards!

And how will you know the lottery was provably random?
37  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / [ANN] ALTCOIN BOUNTY THREAD. PLEASE LIST YOUR BOUNTIES HERE! on: February 15, 2014, 01:20:45 AM
We are a new team hoping to promote the use of Altcoins through the bounty system of contract labor.

Please help us and post your Altcoin Bounty in reply on this thread.

What is a Bounty?
A Bounty will be an offer for payment in your Altcoin for work to be completed by a contractor. Payments will be in bitcoin or an altcoin.

Sample Bounty:
"Security engineer needed for NobleCoin Mining Pool debugging. Payments will be made in 5,000,000 NobleCoin over period of 2 weeks. Required linux security administration"

What should your Bounty Post consist of?
    • Bounty Title: What is the job to be done?
    • Bounty Amount: How much will this bounty pay
    • Bounty Currency: What is the currency of your alt-coin
    • Bounty Description: What is the long description of your bounty? Any specific requirements that bounty seekers should review?
    • Bounty Link: URL, if you have one to your Bounty Description page

    Our value proposition:
We'd like to help create and promote alt coin demand by promoting your bounties for your coin. If this works, the price of all altcoins should rise as coins circulate for employment use cases.[/list]
38  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty Protocol, Client and Coin (built on Bitcoin) - Official on: February 01, 2014, 03:29:34 AM
Yeah I did have some ideas:

    1. Lets get the bets rolling. Maybe a Superbowl bet would be good, if its not too late.

    2. Getting a video commercial type gig like what Colored Coins has.

I don't have many ideas right now but I will brainstorm on it.

I believe the bet and broadcast commands still need to be published.

What a great idea! Let me know when you have it setup and I'll post something on Reddit about Counterparty allowing you to P2P bet on the Super bowl with XCP.

Video Commercial will require some type of bounty and budget since we'll need a professional, but what do you think would make a good budget? $3K for a video?

We start with these and we have publicity.
39  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty Protocol, Client and Coin (built on Bitcoin) - Official on: February 01, 2014, 02:34:28 AM
I think i read somewhere that price is 0.01BTC/XPC.

That was a 3rd party seller, which is selling XCP at that price. But mainly, how are we going to increase the demand in this coin? I have alot of marketing skills behind my belt, I can help.

Patel if you have some particular suggestions, please PM me.

I propose that we get the community to help out with this effort and self-organize. Let's get moving. We don't need to wait. The devs have built the mousetrap and the world wants it.

Patel and wizzardTim, if you have ideas, why don't you share them and tell us what you think we must do? let us activate this community into action today.

If anyone has recommendations or ideas they want me to execute, let me know and I will get going and try them out.
40  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty Protocol Applications Directory on: January 31, 2014, 08:53:21 PM
If you are running a web-application with Counterpartyd, quote this thread with your website and an application description.

I would like to collect a list for a possible Public Relations Bounty that I will launch myself to give your site and application more visibility!
