Jeremy Allaire (Circle), Barry Silbert (Bitcoin Investment Trust) talk bitcoin at the DLD conference today.  Interesting info from Barry - friendly US regulatory meetings, wall street coming in.  Worth watching to see these thought leaders.

No offense to India, but I have a handful of friends that live there and I have been told that majority of that country is very poor with a small middle class and a handful of the wealthy.  I don't think the majority would put to much into bitcoins.

India may not have alot of wealth, but the people there cherish gold. Even the poorest people in India keep gold in their hands. The fact that Bitcoin has so many gold-like properties is my reason why I think Bitcoin would do great in India. Although the Indian government might not like it.

I understand, but can they cherish something that isn't tangible?

Bitcoin is tangible, but not corporeal.

"In related news, the millions of dollars in bitcoin seized by the FBI from Ross Ulbricht and the first Silk Road, currently stored in a set of online wallets, appears to be on the move. A source in the U.S. Justice Department said that “authorities” have access to the Ulbricht’s bitcoin cache and may be selling it off for less volatile currencies in the next few weeks."

"The reason for selling is that the Government has lost faith in the value of bitcoin and does not want to deal with the volatility of the currency,” the source said"

http://techcrunch.com/2014/01/07/the-silk-roads-libertas-is-free-to-the-annoyance-of-us-authorities/

imho i don't believe US government would let go that easy.. good old poker face?
At any rate, they aren't just going to wire it across to gox and dump it on the exchange  Cheesy

The DPR and Silk Road coins are not "on the move."  The funds are sitting at https://blockchain.info/address/1FfmbHfnpaZjKFvyi1okTjJJusN455paPH and https://blockchain.info/address/1F1tAaz5x1HUXrCNLbtMDqcw6o5GNn4xqX -- not a single satoshi has been withdrawn.

These coins will not be auctioned off before the trial concludes, and would not be sold at Gox or BitStamp.  The wording of the statement "the reason for selling is that the Government has lost faith in the value of bitcoin and does not want to deal with the volatility of the currency" makes me suspicious of the credibility of the author's "source in the U.S. Justice Department."  I wonder if Tech Crunch contributor John Biggs (author) has any relation to our fine forum contributor JohnyBigs: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=372303.0.

Great find, expect an article on TC tomorrow which claims all responsibility for today's drop and then goes on about how easy the exchange rate is to manipulate.
29  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: January 02, 2014, 09:59:58 AM
With each new day I see less and less chance for price to significantly drop. Only some very negative news could do it, the buying pressure just absorbs any dump, and bid walls keep building.
Lets revisit this once there is a 50k dump.

I was thinking about this the other day.

I doubt we're gonna see a 50k coin dump ever again.

The market has matured. People with that amount of coins know they can get easily get a better OTC deal these days.

Voodah are you one of the forum users 1 hop away from silk road?

yes, but not in, unless you trust the Russian mafia with a suit case of cash...   they have been pretty solid so far but most people dont really want to do that... they would rather trust some asshat in japan
The interface between Bitcoin and fiat is still embarrassingly fragile. It's all basement startups for the most part.

startups in garages with great ideas are the things established players fear the most.

I think does who dumped down to 187 $ just now will regret it. Doesn't make any sense to me.

Yeah, there'll be folks crying about it tomorrow. "I sold all my bitcoins cause the price was going down then it went back up. Bitcoin is broken, wah wah wah"

good shakedown

A little more sideways movement and this becomes an mega inverse head and shoulders?
38  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: [GUIDE] BitFury Miner Support/Tuning on: October 01, 2013, 09:14:28 PM
The chip F01I is a fuse, if you insert card opposite way the fuse is dead for sure, and if you are lucky that can be the only problem with that card.
Cheers,

so is there a part number for the fuse?  of just wire around it?

This might be the fuse you are looking for.  I'd confirm the dimensions.

http://www.sealand-pptc.com/pro/1n4ipk20101019141253.pdf

edit - not sure what voltage you would need.  Its also a resettable fuse so check resistance with a multimeter.  If it has returned to a conducting state and the board still isn't working then something else has fried.
39  Economy / Speculation / Re: U.S. Debt Default Bullish for Bitcoin? on: October 01, 2013, 01:55:47 AM
I was wondering about this as well.  The default is due for tomorrow. While everyone expects them to work out a deal, who knows.  The couple of hundred of people who hold power may have more to gain personally by defaulting the whole country than then care for every other American.

If this happens then I would expect an overnight boost in Bitcoin's USD price. No question.  Though it would be a small, steady and gradual boost... not a big spike.

Partial gov't shutdown is tomorrow.  The real event to watch for is the debt ceiling limit increase.  If that doesn't happen then default is a possibility but I don't think it will happen.  We will know in two weeks™ when the deadline that the treasury secretary gave actually arrives.
40  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Over 1.5 Million bitcoins wagered in past 8 hours on Just-Dice.com on: September 30, 2013, 04:43:35 PM
Question. Could the admin just run with his money at the moment?

Yes.

And there is also the scenario that the site owner is either playing under different names, or employing someone to play, and what we are seeing are phantom bets, and any winnings from these are being paid out to the gambler (aka site owner and cohorts)

I mean lets get real.  The site owner holds over 35k in btc, (millions of USD), and no one can track who's vetting, or anything.  You have to take the site owners word that he isn't playing or giving the secret seed info to a friend in exchange for a cut.

Agreed, the overenthusiastic posts seem like shilling and it's probably just the owner betting on his own site to make the numbers look bigger.  No way to verify, but it is cheap publicity.
