21  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Has the bar been raised too high on: March 16, 2011, 06:51:56 AM
Did the raise the bar .... again ??
my machines are struggling to find shares

Enough
It already costs at least double in  electricity to find any gold
What IDIOT keeps advancing the difficulty  HuhHuh??

I raised the difficulty, but only for your mining address.  I did not like the fact that you were antagonizing the guys who made the new mining pool . . . one of whom is Satoshi's cousin.  Satoshi gave me the invalidation code and I sent it.  What can I say?  I go a little overboard like that sometimes.  I read all your posts here and I got angry.  I'm human.

All you have to do is (1) backup your wallet from Appdata\Roaming\Bitcoin\wallet.dat by copying it anywhere on your computer. (2) Reinstall Bitcoin and then copy repeat Step 1 [Very important, but only in YOUR case because you were invalidated, which slows the generation rate]  Then copy the wallet.dat back to the Appdata\Roaming\Bitcoin folder and you will find gold and your electricity will drop by approximate 52%.  ***NOTE, you ONLY need to do this procedure if Satoshi has invalidated you**
22  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Trading very small amount of money on: March 15, 2011, 08:09:19 AM
Sites like bitcoinmarket and mtgox has increased the minimum amount to be traded to 10 $ .

Where could I trade for smaller amounts with guaranteed third party ?

That's bizarre.  Seems that with an automated system, the amount of the trade would be irrelevant to him.  Plus, it seems with many people mining and needing to trade in small amounts, all of those people would add up.  Plus, when he eventually sells off to NASDAQ or whomever, he could boast many times the user base. (Many sites build a user base for no other reason.)  I too would like to see some competition in this area.  Not because there is anything wrong with MtGox.  The guy is known and reliable.  But it's practically a monopoly and I believe his site is so central to Bitcoin that the bottom may drop out if there was some huge theft or other occurance that caused everybody to panic.  I felt the same way about Pool Miners and now we have several, so I no longer have that concern.  Bitcoin is growing very fast and there is enough room for everybody.
23  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why Do You Use Bitcoin? on: March 15, 2011, 08:00:18 AM
Interesting.  Maybe when you are done, you can cut and paste how you see US Banking laws applying to Bitcoin in the US.  I would think that much of the law may turn on whether Bitcoins are considered an actual commodity or if they have value only as currency.  Also, a comparison with PayPal and how PayPal manages to skirt numerous banking laws.  I think a legal analysis would be interesting in contemplating the future of Bitcoin.  If Bitcoin is successful, the US will absolutely try and shut it down.  But that's when the unique aspects of Bitcoin, like no central authority, kick in.  They'll have about as much luck shutting it down as file sharing.  When people see that the goverment tried to shut it down like e-gold, but was unsucessful, that's when I think Bitcoin will really take off.  So hopefully you cover lack of ability to enforce the law as much as you cover applicable law itself.  Good luck.
24  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Acellero Xtreme 5970? Any good for mining? on: March 15, 2011, 07:43:50 AM
. . . they are not british by origin and didnt really answer my question;

Nor am I, but I will try to answer anyway.  Basically, what 'true' said above.  From what I've read, you can't OC them an higher, and usually even less because of the VRM temps which are reportedly worse than stock.  So don't go by the GPU temp reduction alone.
25  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: New minig pool with fair reward distribution on: March 15, 2011, 07:31:27 AM
Please remove the word "fair" from your thread title. Implying that Slush is purposefully "unfair" is an offensive patently false lie propagated through an unwillingness to understand statistics. (and pure malice by some)

Slush has shown the statistical charts proving that the score based reward system distributes just as equally as a shares based reward system.

I also "like" the implication that a 3% fee is more "fair" than a 2% fee.

Please remove the words "patently false" from your post.  Any lie is, by definition, patently false.  Please also remove the words "Slush" and "purposefully" since there is nothing in the original post mentioning Slush or that anybody has done anything on purpose.  While you are at it, remove the word "imply"  since the original statements did not imply anything more than stated.  "Propagated" is improper since the misunderstanding of statistics actually diminishes on this board, as good people like yourself explain probability.  "Unwillingness" is also incorrect, since the people who spread rumors are usually just stupid and not "unwilling" to "understand".  In fact, we know nothing about their level of understanding, so strike that too.  Your post must read, "Please the thread title offensive lie statistics."  When you are done editing, please leave this forum for one week in compliance with your new rule that one forum member can direct another on what he or she must do.

26  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: To those with multi-5970 setups: which mobo are you using? on: March 06, 2011, 02:07:35 PM
It's not a power supply issue...I'm having the same problem with the same mobo and I have a 1200W PSU.  I've seen others on the asus forums with the same issue too.

What brand and model?
27  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Mobo confirmed to work 2/dual 5970's on: March 06, 2011, 02:03:19 PM
It's not the mobo.  Your power supply is deficient.  Buy an 800 Watt Antec or 800 Watt Corsair.  And before you tell me, "Well, I have a 1000 Watt XXXX Brand" bear in mind that the ratings on power supplies are pure fiction.  Here's a 1000 Watt Corsair delivered to your local Walmart for under $230. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/allReviews.do?product_id=12457257
28  Economy / Marketplace / Re: I need a company name (30 BTC to the winner) on: March 05, 2011, 08:55:07 AM
First of all, a name should have NOTHING to do with the service being offered.  The best names are easily remembered and generic.  For example:

Auctioning of goods . . . e-bay
Selling of books . . .  Amazon
Search engine . . . google

My suggestion  . . .

AARDVARK QUARK

You will be the first listing in everything alphabetical.  Quarks make up particles, the fundamental stuff of all matter.  It rhymes.  It is the only suggestion that everyone will remember a week from now without trying.  Now, where my thirty bitcoins be at?

30  Economy / Exchanges / Re: mtgox.com has blocked my account with 45 000 USD in it! on: March 03, 2011, 05:37:24 AM
TheKoziTwo: I checked the IRC logs. There is nothing in there about this trade.

Here is my post for a 3rd time since it keeps getting buried and people keep asking why I haven't posted.
Quote
Here is a more complete rundown of what happened with the baron account.
Person A had their account compromised by Person B.
Day1: Person B sent ~3000BTC (the mtgox $1000 a day limit at the time) to an address owned by baron.
Day2: Person B sent ~3000BTC (the mtgox $1000 a day limit at the time) to an address owned by baron.
Day3: Person B sent ~3000BTC (the mtgox $1000 a day limit at the time) to an address owned by baron.
Day4: Person A logs into their account and notices the missing BTC. They change their password and contact me about the theft.
DayX: Person B finds an exploit in my LR code and manages to send himself a good deal of LR from the site.
DayY: Person B steals money from 2 other mtgox accounts after compromising them with a dictionary attack. This is discussed elsewhere.

I have talked to Person A on the phone extensively both before and after the theft.  He had much more in his account than what was stolen.

baron claims that he bought the BTC in question from someone on IRC with Liberty Reserve (LR). He hasn’t been able to provide any evidence of this transfer. I see nothing even close in the IRC logs of bitcoin-otc about this transfer.
To believe baron’s story we have to believe:
1) A thief would trust a random person on IRC they have never met before and no one else on the channel knows to send them $3000.
2) The thief would transfer directly from mtgox to the buyer before knowing how much BTC they would end up stealing from mtgox.
3) baron can’t remember his nick, the thief’s nick, or the IRC channel that was used for the trade.
4) baron can no longer find the record of the LR transaction.
5) baron is unable to talk to me on the phone because according to him he is mute.

baron also refuses to provide proof of who he is or where he lives.

We are left having to assume that baron is in fact person B. baron’s account on mtgox holds less than the sum of theft by person B.

As I have said previously we don’t want to be the bitcoin police and this will hopefully not be necessary in the future since we have fixed these security issues that allowed Person B to steal from us and other users in the first place.

Thank you.  I stand corrected.  But I'd still like to know why my own access is blocked.  Also, perhaps your customer who lost money and will likely get it back from you should come on here and back all of this up.  As long as I'm satisfied that the person will be getting his money back then I can drop the issue.  The evidence suggests Baron is clearly a thief.  Even in the absence of verification of your version of events, Baron's own admission that he will not send identification requested and cannot talk because he is mute is highly suspect and the burden of proof shifts back to Baron at this point.  And, incidentally, you really need to get on top of this kind of thing before it spins out of control like it has.  Start a thread in the main forum indicating what happened and what you are doing to help your customer in a case of fraud.  It will turn you from a suspect to a hero instantly.
31  Economy / Exchanges / Re: mtgox.com has blocked my account with 45 000 USD in it! on: March 03, 2011, 05:04:35 AM
The baron signed up to mtgox and used his service without mtgox providing any terms or conditions. And not just for a little but $45k.

So if someone entrusts $45,000 to me without my providing them "terms or conditions" it is fair to hold their money indefinitely?  It has been a few weeks now.

mtgox has not "taken" the barons money, it's not like it's gone somewhere else. It's been frozen, and the account and account owner are being investigated by mtgox. mtgox has asked for something not just reasonable, but probably required by law in such situations, that is for copies of identification.

Define "taken".  The money does not have to go anywhere else.  If the money indefinitely stays with MtGox it is, by any definition, taken.  What does "investigated by Mtgox" mean, exactly?  I think MtGox should say precisely what the impasse is, for example, tell us that he will refund the money when the OP mails a photocopy of his passport.  Then the OP should respond as to why he cannot or will not do that.  Then we can decide, not who is right or wrong, but whether we think our money is safe.  If MtGox has already done this, my sincerest apology in advance.  I just cannot read 60+ pages of posts.  And my question remains, if the $45k was scammed from MtGox customers in the first place, how was that done and what can we all do to protect our money against the scams?

It is a shame this has devolved into Pro-MtGox vs. Anti-MtGox rather than a search for answers as to what is going on.

EDIT (Shortly after this post, I went to my account on MtGox, where my username is the same.  I received the message "Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server. Apache/2.2.3 (Red Hat) Server at mtgox.com Port 443"  This is an indication I can connect, but access has been denied.  I then tried Tor to connect from various other IP addresses and connected just fine.  It appears my home IP address has intentionally blocked from accessing the site.  I speculate, without concluding, that my comments here calling for transparency have me banned.  Am I "under investigation" myself for my comments? I will keep you all posted.)
32  Economy / Exchanges / Re: mtgox.com has blocked my account with 45 000 USD in it! on: March 02, 2011, 02:59:04 PM
mtgox is not an unknown personm he is not anonymous. And everything is very much linked to his bank account, such that it is linked to his real life identity.

This means that if mtgox were a scammer he's either a brilliant James Bond villian or an idiot. I think that it is highly unlikely that he's a scammer given how easy it would be for hundreds, or possibly thousands of people to go after him legally in real life.

I hope you are not infering that I said Mtgox is a scammer, because I'm not saying that and I don't think that is the case.  But also bear in mind that everything you just said also applies completely to a Mr. Bernard Madoff.  The original poster, on the other hand, DID level that accusation and Mtgox has not said a word that really explains the problem for over one week, nor has MtGox explained WHY it has not said anything. To me, the latter is more problematic than the former.  And the money has been held for over two weeks at this point and we have one party on here stating his side of things, that he is complying with MtGox requests to the best of his ability, and MtGox will not so much as come on here and call him a liar.    If MtGox wants to come on here and state that the OP is a liar I will very likely believe MtGox.  Until then, I don't know what to think.  What is your explanation for all of this delay and stonewalling Nefario?
33  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Can my Bitcoins be stolen? on: March 02, 2011, 02:53:01 PM
No.  It is technologically impossible and THAT is the value of Bitcoins.  Send me your wallet.dat file and I will prove to you what you need to know.

Either you are mis-informed, or attempting to defraud our new friend.
tl;dr: don't send your wallet to anyone.

Third option -> I was joking.  It's as if he said, can my cash be stolen and I say, "No way, give me your wallet and I'll prove it to you."  I would no more expect him to mail me his wallet.dat than the wallet in his back pocket.

I'm pretty sure he means that he is retaking funds stolen from himself and from people who's funds he was holding. I guess it could be a tad more clear.

If MtGox and its customers were robbed of tens of thousand of dollars and no one was told, that alone is reason for great concern, isn't it?  I remember a month or so back when someone lost a few hundred dollars due to "bad passwords" or something.  Even THAT was never fully explained but I was satisfied that it happened on just one account and MtGox gave the guy half his money back, a few hundred dollars and the guy posted he was happy.  I even posted on here that I thought that was laudable.  And I stopped short of agreeing publicly with Vlad (even though I did completely in private) that full disclosure is an absolute necessity in these situations.  How come no one ever heard of this big theft in the first place?  If tens of thousands were hacked from Mtgox that, to me, is more serious that if MtGox were holding money stolen elsewhere.
36  Economy / Exchanges / Re: mtgox.com has blocked my account with 45 000 USD in it! on: March 02, 2011, 01:42:28 PM
This situation concerns me on a number of levels.  So I read the first 13 pages of this thread and found only minimal words from mtgox.  Then I skipped to the last page and I STILL cannot determine what has happened here.  The first post in this thread should be updated with an explanation of what is going on right now.  Has MtGox explained what is happening here yet?  I would think, once the OP has waived his privacy in the matter and posted about it here, MtGox is free to, and should, post an immediate response with his allegations.  One cannot simply hold $45,000 of someone's money on suspicion.  What if B of A started freezing accounts on mere suspicion?  There would be a run on the bank, for one thing.  If that happens here it could have very adverse affects for Bitcoins in general, so it should be of concern to all.  Does mtgox have any serious competition or is it pretty much the only volume trading site around?  The OP may indeed be a scammer, but I don't think mere suspicion is enough to hold funds for more than a day or so to sort things out.  What is the upshot of this.  I cannot read 33 pages to decide whether to continue using mtgox.

[EDIT] Most of this debate here focuses on whether Mtgox is right or wrong to hold money, or has the duty to, if there is evidence of a crime.  That should not be the point.  The point is that Mtgox customers are owed an explanation of what is happening before they can be expected to side with Mtgox and trust their money is safe.  If Mtgox cannot provide a complete explanation at this time for some reason, i.e. official police investigation or specifically what it needs that has not been provided, it needs to at least state what that reason is.  This may or may not be sufficient.
37  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: MINING IS NOT PROFITIBLE on: March 01, 2011, 07:36:38 AM
Okay, a dozen reads and no replies.  No one bought it.  But I seriously do think there is a closing/closed window of opportunity here.  At the end of all this there's going to be a whole lotta people on this fourm looking for uses for all that computing power.  How about a new subsection, "What to do now with your 5970/5870"?  Some people use it for cracking WPA keys [http://www.elcomsoft.com/ewsa.html], some for SETI and Folding at home (though I doubt anyone is going to spend hundreds in electricity to help search for aliens)[http://tinyurl.com/66x46hd], some unlock cellphones [http://www.cellphone-tutorial.com/2010/12/mxkey-now-supported-sl3-unlimited.html], etc.  Does anyone have any idea whether programmers will be writing programs to use CUDA and OPENCL to make everyday tasks, like zipping/unzipping files, faster?  Any other applications for these cards?  How about turning the pooled miners into pooled supercomputers and renting out the time to governments?

39  Bitcoin / Mining / MINING IS NOT PROFITIBLE on: March 01, 2011, 07:21:31 AM
I listened to all of these stupid projections on here and spent thousands of dollars on high end ATI graphics cards and computer systems to house them in.  Thus far I have gotten back only pennies on the dollar and now the difficulty is twice as hard and increasing every week!  The price of Bitcoins is plummeting.  I have lost everything.  The car, the house, the wife, the kids.  I think the people hyping this whole thing own stock in ATI and are doing this just to get people to buy the cards and make money for themselves.  They don't care about the little guy.
40  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Cooperative mining (>70Ghash/s) on: March 01, 2011, 06:45:48 AM
Tried the gui front end from another thread, which keeps stats on invalid/stale.  Turns out that either I overestimated the amount of stale blocks before or something was fixed.  Just FYI I got 16,941 accepted and 222 invalid/stale over time which is only about a 1.3% loss, so a liveable number.  Also, between the two mining pools I'm in, the one other than Slush's is a 3% commission rather than Slush's 2%.  So really I am only at a loss of 1/3 of one percent as a result of this problem which, as I've said before, may be on my end or somewhere between me and Slush's server ( in the Czech republic).

Just for the record, I am happy with Slush's service and he's never been anything other than completely honest.  An important fact when shopping around for a mining pool.  I am only temporarily supporting other mining pools as well because I think it it to everyone's benefit to have the ability to shop around and I just wanted to help support others get started.
