21  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: how to keep track of investments on: October 29, 2014, 01:13:06 AM

I will also look into https://myaltcoins.com/

Thank you very much guys.
22  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / how to keep track of investments on: October 28, 2014, 03:04:47 PM
I have bought 10 or so altcoins.  Sometimes they have gone up or down as the price of bitcoin is going up and down.  It is hard for me to keep track of what was bought on what day and with the bitcoin price changing so much if I am ahead or behind.

Is there some kind of program that I can enter information into that will help me keep track of it all?

How to other people manage their portfolios and keep track of it all?
23  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bitshares X inflating due to bugs and hacks on: October 28, 2014, 10:35:12 AM
Exactly what I feel. It has very neat features, and the tech is incredible.

NXT and Bitshares are both very innovative and are being eaten by greedy investors. Contrast to Counterparty who went ahead with their work and have now made a big breakthrough.

CounterParty burned all the Bitcoin initially donated to them too.  It was impossible for them to run off with the money or scam people because they weren't ever able to see the money in the first place.  Another good sign that somebody isn't trying to scam you and that it isn't a pump is when the devs don't get anything up front and aren't rich on day 1 of an unproven tech.
24  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bitshares X inflating due to bugs and hacks on: October 28, 2014, 10:07:48 AM
I just listened to this podcast http://letstalkbitcoin.com/blog/post/lets-talk-bitcoin-156-the-moolah-story

It tells the story about how Moolah and Mintpal were run and created by a scam artist.

A few people tried to say it was a scam but were screamed at and trolled endlessly by people that invested and thought they were going to make money off from it.  Many of these people defending Moolah probably honestly believed in it.  Had they know it was a scam, they wouldn't have invested in the first place.

I don't own any Bitshares, but I have followed it for 9 months and in that time have watched as time after time the plan for Bitshares has changed and things haven't happened as planned.

And now this thread reads just like the podcast states happened for Moolah.

It may or may not be a scam.  I don't know, but there is definitely "some writing on the wall" of things not going right.

I'll admit the concept seems kind of neat, but this exact Bitshares platform has enough questionable factors in it for me not to invest.

For me, I am going to take the long approach of wait and see.  If I come back in a year or two and things are great, I'll be convinced it is good.

My experience shows that if it is not legitimate, it won't last two years for sure.
25  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are you all idiots? ...or what? on: October 25, 2014, 07:39:40 PM
If Bitcoin is going to take off, you've got to use it.  I just talked to a customer service guy at Newegg.  He said 'hardly anyone' pays with bitcoin.  He said he's only dealt with two orders done in Bitcoin.

If you've got bitcoin, go spend some buying cool shit at Newegg or Overstock.  The whole thing will fall apart if Merchants start seeing it as a waste of time.

Don't wait, buy some shit today!  What are you - an idiot?

The usefulness of Bitcoin in retail transaction, is doubtful at best. I don't see any benefit in using Bitcoin in a domestic retail transaction, other than for some reason you need to be anonymous when buying a legal product.

The true power of Bitcoin is in a international cross-border transaction:
* US credit cards/banks bans online Casinos? no problem, we could fund gambling account using Bitcoin.
* darknet transactions
* open bazaar style markets
* international remittance
* true global commodity/stock market

Also the Bitcoin blockchain is useful for a variety of other applications.

Bingo. I agree with everything here. Why would anyone go through the hassle of acquiring coins to buy something they can easily buy with the swipe of a debit card? Bitcoin's true usefulness is in these areas in which fiat falls short.

As a former low-stakes online poker player and current sports betting enthusiast, I can say without any doubt that bitcoins are FAR superior methods of funding and withdrawing for these activities.

International remittance is another big one. Anyone use Western Union or MoneyGram lately? In the US, unless you are sending to a Spanish-speaking country, be prepared to pony up big fees.

Lastly, Open Bazaar is going to be big one day. Huge even. For all the people that say it is too difficult for the average Joe to use, trust me, the average Joe will figure it out if he wants to use it badly enough. Average Joes figured out Bitcoin when they realized they could use it to buy their favorite drugs on SR.

I agree with all these statements but in the end we still need regular shops accepting bitcoins too.

If you win big at the casino.  It is nicer to just shop with the bitcoins directly.
After I sell something on Open Bazzar, it would be nice if I could use that coin to buy some groceries at my neighborhood store.
If somebody overseas sends you money, instead of paying fees to transfer that bitcoin into fiat, why not just use it in a shop that gives you a discount for bitcoin?
26  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are you all idiots? ...or what? on: October 25, 2014, 07:35:21 PM
Tis the problem of which came first, the chicken or the newegg.

This is the bootstrapping dilemma.  It is hard to spend bitcoins because no real shop in my city accepts them, but no shops want to accept them because nobody is using them.

If you believe in this movement it is really important to spend them whenever possible.

And yes, it does create downward pressure on the exchanges at first, but eventually that won't happen.  When bitcoin is in a good rally those companies won't be selling but hoarding.  Also, eventually if enough people are spending then some people need to be buying again to spend so that will create upward pressure.

This is a needed growing pain.
27  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: When explaining Bitcoin to someone, what are some key points to speak about? on: October 25, 2014, 07:29:01 PM
Bitcoin isn't just money like a dollar or a euro, it is a programmable money.  It can be endowed with qualities, directions, limits, and purpose.

A dollar bill is an dumb analog token.  A bit is digital, adaptable, and programmable token.  Which do you think is better?

Just laminate the paper wallet.  That will last hundreds of years.  That plastic will more than preserve the paper.

Daedelus is right. This is a huge win for crypto in general.  And I mean HUGE.  We should all be tickled.

CIYAM might very well go down in the history books for this.

I don't have my old seed and passphrase.  I do still have my wallet password and can unlock the wallet.

Please help!

Open & Unlock your wallet.

Go to File -> Debug -> Console and run the GET wallet/seed command.

Save your seed...  you might/WILL lose access to your funds at some point without it.

Download v18 and recover your wallet from seed.

I was searching through the thread and saw you covered this before here. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=522102.msg8121945#msg8121945

I bet you have to do this a lot! But I appreciate it.

Yep, smaragda has to do a FAQ thread in qoras website or a btt thread too  Wink

I looked on the Qora forum first thinking I might find something there instead of trying to search this thread.

Anyway, I can confirm coins have arrived.  Thanks!

Hi together,
its now the second time, i made a transaction and the qora never arrived at the recipient account.
First time it was from Bter to poloniex before about 4 weeks. 2m gone! Bter / poloniex didn't help me/ could not do anything. I thougt it was because of the sidechain issue.
Second time was yesterday from my wallet to poloniex. 5m never arrived!
Are there still issues with qora blockchains or is it a problem from polo?

Any help would be kindly appreciated.
Thanks!

that is a lot of coin.  I would be angry
34  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Qora | Released 16 May | 100% POS | New Source on: October 15, 2014, 01:27:40 PM
I have a really old Qora file (so old I don't even know what version because it doesn't say, but the UI looks the same as the new version).  It was saved on my old computer.  I transferred it to my new computer and clicked "run".  When I did Qora came up and it took a little while but if found a peer.  But after 20 minutes I can't really see it doing anything.  Under the generated blocks tab it is blank.  I use to have coins in this wallet, but now everything says 0.  Should I just wait longer?

I don't have my old seed and passphrase.  I do still have my wallet password and can unlock the wallet.

Please help!

How many stakes are already meant to be given to developers and marketing and can anybody tell me how that breakdown will look?   Roll Eyes

I heard devs will get 400 shares?  Is that right?
And how many devs is that split between?

Originally there were 1,000 NEM shares set aside for non-stake holders.  Is this still true?

It would be nice to know the number breakdowns.

Not sure if the scandal helped bitcoin, but Piratebay traffic sure spiked.
37  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: is the government going to copy bitcoin and leave us high and dry ? on: September 23, 2014, 01:02:41 PM
In 20 years from now, I am guessing lots of countries will have blockchain backed currencies.  (doubt it will be a bitcoin clone)

For a government there are many advantages, especially knowing exactly what every transaction is at all times.  All it would take is that the seeds for wallets would come from Government websites and a person couldn't get a seed without using their name, address, and ID number.

Oops, hope I didn't give them any ideas.

Unofficial music video contributed by a NEM's cheerleader    Cheesy

NEM official website is

NEM hasn't even been released yet, so I think it is the first coin that had a song pre-genesis.  Catchy song too.
39  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Visited my first Bitcoin ATM in Chicago today on: September 16, 2014, 12:27:00 PM
Thanks to the OP for posting.  This looks like it is really cool.  The 5% is a huge turn off for me though.

In the future, I can imagine there being many more ATMs and many more companies and prices, spreads, and fees getting much tighter.

I am one of those people that sends money overseas pretty often.  Right now I lose about 5% if I send 1000 USD.  That is exchange rates and bank fees on both sides.   It also takes about a day two to clear.

In a world where a few bitcoin ATMs were in each city and the total fee was 1%, I would definitely use it.  I could have money overseas from fiat -> bitcoin -> fiat in under an hour.

Also, 1% is not too hard to imagine.  Lots of companies could eventually be profitable on 1% especially if it is all automated.

There are lots and lots of people from the third world working in rich countries sending money home.  Many of them illegal or unbanked.  Bitcoin ATMs could very easily have a huge market for international transfers if these ATMs become more common and tighter with fees.
