22  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin price PLUS $1000 - Would Bitcoin then see world wide acceptance? on: October 10, 2014, 02:49:22 AM
When the price will hit $1000 several hodlers will sell their holdings but the adoption will continue without them.
I think this is a problem with bitcoin. There are too many people who believe the price will always rise, thus preventing them from spending their bitcoin thus preventing adoption from increasing
I agree. We need to see more bitcoin related commerce. When we see enough commerce then we can truly see the benefits that bitcoin has to offer. When enough people use bitcoin then merchants will hopefully start to offer discounts for using it, which will hopefully cause more people to buy and use it, and the circle will continue.

Bitcoin's acceptance isn't really tied to commerce as much as it's crippled by usability. Of course there must be someplace to use Bitcoin for it to have value but for general acceptance it must be easy to use. Until very recently Bitcoin was a toy for techno geeks and nerds because it requires speciality knowledge that the overwhelming majority of citizens don't possess. I'd like to say that Bitcoin could be used by just anyone that spends the time necessary to gain the knowledge but this simply isn't true. There are still many people that can't balance their own checking account ledger and need to have someone else do their taxes because they can't figure it out or their lazy.

Businesses are starting to pop up that will allow Bitcoin to be used like a credit or debit card. These businesses need to create a layer between the protocol and the user that will allow a simpleton to scan a QR code or answer a simple question to pay with and buy Bitcoin. I'd like to see software that fits on a phone works like Bump and asks questions like, "a register near you is requesting that you pay .005 Bitcoin. Would you like to make this payment? This step is really more important than any value that could be assigned to the individual unit of 1 Bitcoin. Satoshi is the unit most people will eventually buy and whole Bitcoins will be reserved for transferring large amounts of money between financial institutions. Ever seen one of these, this is the future one Bitcoin:

These were reserved for bank transfers.

If there was software that would process these kinds of requests for payments then people could easily scam by broadcasting these kinds of requests near a register and when a customer pays the incorrect address there would be nothing they could do about it, nor could anyone prove who was the scammer.

A much better scenario would be retail outlets using a QR code on a PIN pad so you could scan a QR code to send a payment to, include a TX fee, then broadcast the TX to the store's node only. When the store receives the TX they would rebroadcast the TX to multiple "super nodes" ensuring that the TX is well propagated before accepting it as a 0/unconfirmed TX
23  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will Circle be doing any prime time Television Ad? Here's why they must on: October 10, 2014, 02:35:00 AM
I feel like Circle.com is the first step of making bitcoin much more publicly accessible and with ease. BEing able to buy BTC instantly with just my cc is a godsend. No more waiting for bank deposits to complete, etc.

If that is the point, then I am all in for circle.com
You will need to pay a premium for this service. They are essentially giving you a short term loan that is very risky so the premium will be large. You would be better off waiting the few days that it takes for a deposit to clear as it will save you a lot of money in the long run
24  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How would you store >100 Bitcoins? on: October 10, 2014, 02:18:46 AM
Spread across 5 to 10 offline wallets. I like paper wallets. Save the paperwallets well.
Keep some spending coins in "hot" wallets but make sure this is no more than you know you are gonna need to transact
spreading your bitcoin across multiple wallets is very risky and will give you a false sense of security. You will likely employ the same kind of security measures across each wallet so if one gets compromised they all will likely be compromised
25  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Gavin Andresen Proposes Bitcoin Hard Fork to Address Network Scalability on: October 10, 2014, 02:17:07 AM
"Bitcoin Foundation (Master) Chief scientist Gavin Andresen has proposed increasing the number of transactions allowed on the bitcoin network by raising the maximum block size by 50% per year.

I'm no protocol know-it-all, but wouldn't increasing the maximum block size increase the number of "no fee" transactions?  As the block reward drops, the protocol relies on those fees to keep miners interested.
Not necessarily. Just because there is more space on a per block basis does not mean that the miners will be willing to fill that space for free. The miners very well could choose to keep the blocks "empty" rather then give away free space, as having a larger block does somewhat increase the chance that a block will be orphaned

Thats silly. spend all that money to raid someone just for an alleged plant?

u make it sound so innocuous.  but it causes schizophrenia in some people
That'd have to be a pretty major study to prove it. You'd have to collect at least a thousand people people in various age, geographical, and ethnic groups, then have one group smoking and one group not, with regular, frequent drug testing. At the start and end, you'd have to then give everyone a psych exam -- this'd help remove any problems with selection bias, I'd guess.

Given how many schizophrenics are undiagnosed, I'd be more willing to bet the possible temporary paranoia of smoking exacerbates the person's eccentricities enough to lead to hospitalization which then leads to a schizophrenia diagnosis. If they put you in the psych ward to start out with in a hospital, that being on your record might influence whether or not a borderline's diagnosed, too.

It does cause schizorphrenia in some people with prolonged use. i quit smoking marijuana because i would hear evil voices. they would tell me disturbing shit too. i'll never smoke that shit again, it was fucking up my brain. i can remember that i was barely cognitive when i stopped smoking marijuana, and suffered acute social anxiety. a few years later i feel fine now. maybe a bit nervous. no more voices, no more nasty lung infections. you watch though, they'll legalize this shit and the country will be filled with zombie ass morons who are barely cognitive.
Besides causing very bad mental illnesses, weed is a gateway drug, meaning that it leads many people into using much harder more addicting drugs
27  Economy / Auctions / Re: [Auction] MoneyPot.com is for sale! on: October 10, 2014, 02:04:51 AM
I call scam.

I understand you wanting to take the sites bankroll as if you included it then value of the auction would simply be higher by the amount of the bankroll.

To say that you will control the money owed to players is just crazy. There is nothing to stop you from running away with player's money after the site is sold. There is also nothing to stop you from artificially inflating the balance in players' accounts so the bidder would need to payout more money then they should. Not only would you running away with the players' money cause the highest bidder to have an increased liability but would also hurt the value of their website.

30  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Random 0.00001 BTC from Laxo Trade? on: October 10, 2014, 01:55:12 AM
How is this spam? Are tiny transactions like these considered to be spam?

The transactions have a public note on them, saying their website. Blockchain also has a feature to label addresses, and Laxo Trade is using an address which is labeled with their name and website.
The public notes are actually only available if you use the blockchain.info block explorer, otherwise they will be invisible to you (they are not actually on the blockchain).

Most importantly they are paying an appropriate miners fee therefore are essentially paying to help keep the network secure
31  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Would you be interested in a Bitcoin Credit Union? on: October 10, 2014, 01:52:11 AM
Both banks and credit unions alike make their money off of loans. This is their primary source of income.

You may have lower costs but would still have costs which would need to be passed along.

One thing that you forgot to include as a cost is the 'cost of funds' as you would need to include the cost of the money that you invest while you are waiting to ROI on your investment, as if you did not invest in the CU then you could have invested it somewhere else and earned a return (potentially)

Credit Unions are member owned, most will charge a membership fee up front of around $25. If we are able to get 500 people who are interested, an up front fee of $100 each would cover the start up costs...the recommended initial users of 3000 would only require a $20 up front fee.

The price given for yearly expenses by the NCUA is around $75,000. Without handling cash or loans this price would likely be lower. Say around $50,000 for simplicity sake.

So we could either get 500 new people per year at $100 each or 2500 people per year at $20 each. Or we charge a small percentage for exchanging from dollars to bitcoins.

With 500 people making the average US salary of around $50,000 per year we could charge .2% per direct deposit to cover costs. With 1000 people we could get the rate down to .1%...quite negligible.

And being member owned, the members get to decide the best route.

And if it had enough support I am sure a few early adopters would be willing to put up the initial $50k to get this set up.
The reason people are willing to pay money to be a member of a credit union is because they offer higher rates on deposits and lower rates on loans. If these features are removed them the main incentive to join is removed.

Your .1 or .2% is quite high just to receive your money. These fees would need to be above what you would charge from exchange fees (that you would need to pass on). It would probably be cheaper to just get a free checking account from a large bank, get direct deposit, transfer money to bitstamp every two weeks (or however often you are paid) and buy on bitstamp "manually" the process would only take ~20 minutes each pay period and would save money over the long run.

Any time you add an additional middle man you are going to increase costs
32  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Generate Offline Address on: October 10, 2014, 01:44:13 AM
Can anyone write an address generation utility for an HP 50g graphing calculator?
The problem with your request is that it would be very difficult to copy the private key and address onto something more stable as well as something that could sign a TX.

Your biggest problem is that once the battery dies on your calculator (or if you or someone else takes the batteries out) then you will lose your private keys along with your money unless you have backed them up

I think that weed use does lead to an increased level of paranoia. I don't think the level of paranoia would lead to a person being put in a psych ward if they otherwise do not have a mental illness. I would argue that a good portion of the paranoia from weed use is the consequences of getting caught with/using it.

I have however read studies that do link an increased risk of schizophrenia to use of weed
34  Other / Meta / Re: BitcoinTalk Ads income, who get them? Why? on: October 10, 2014, 01:06:38 AM
The people involved in this forum earn money by running scam ads designed to defraud newcomers to Bitcoin.  Michael Marquardt (Theymos) gets the money and apparently pays some of the moderators.  However, they have several $million due to the appreciation of Bitcoin and the donations made from the early days.  I believe he stated that the funds are being saved in case they have legal expenses due to all the stuff they do which is highly questionable from a legal standpoint.
Why should it be up to the forum to determine which ads are for scams and which ones are legit? I can guarantee you that there was not conclusive evidence of most scams that were executed on here prior to the scam being brought to light. There is also likely some evidence of legit businesses of being scams prior to them earning a reputation.

I get the feeling that you want the forum to have a higher standard as to what they will accept as advertisers so the price to advertise will go down so you can advertise your own business

It is a matter of degree of what knowledge the web site has.  If you run a bunch of ads and one turns out to be a scam a web site would not be liable if they did not have knowledge beforehand.  If the web site knew the ads were designed to scam people and they went ahead and worked with the advertiser and ran the ads anyway then they are liable.  Often there is grey area which is why normal businesses set some sort of standard.

I don't generally buy advertising (with a few exceptions) and I would never send these guys any funds.  I also would not want to be associated with the ads running here.  In fact I won't run ads for any of the Bitcoin advertising services I have seen on web sites I operate because all the ones I had tried display highly questionable ads.  I recently tried one and the first ad that showed up was some kind of "Litecoin pharmacy" and I immediately stopped serving the ads.
Do you have any actual evidence of this? You have implied and outright accused theymos several times of knowingly accepted money from people who were planning to scam however you have shown zero evidence that he knew of their intentions, nor have you shown any proof that conclusive evidence was even available prior to the scam taking place.

EDIT: if your accusations are true then it would be important for the community to know the truth about his dealings so the community can act accordingly. If you are unwilling (unable) to provide proof then you are just spreading FUD and lies around
35  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is old 3.5 floppy safer than USB drive for cold storage? on: October 10, 2014, 01:02:51 AM
Sounds good, but how would I get the QR codes off of the offline computer and onto the online computer. I can generate them on the offline computer and scan them into my phone, but how do I get them to the online computer without using a wand or some other USB interface I'm trying to avoid?

Built-in webcam on the online PC? Reads the QR code from the offline PC and you always can double check and compare the output the software provides (QtQR for Linux, for example). But depending on tx size you'll end up scanning several QR codes. (etotheipi's post)
Many computers with built in webcam have built in wifi so if the OP is trying to avoid using USB period then he would probably not to be dealing with a computer that could have it's wifi antenna enabled (although this is serious tinfoil hat status).

@moria I believe the risk of using a USB drive is very low. You can further minimize this risk by utilizing good physical security to both your USB drive and your computer that holds the private keys.
36  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Are there non-scammy scrypt cloud mining services out there? on: October 10, 2014, 12:24:13 AM
The essential idea of cloud mining disgusts me. It is bad enough we have centralized pools, let alone centralized mining warehouses. Please don't encourage this behavior. The only justification for centralized mining is if all of the members owned the company and equipment equally and had equal rights as any other shareholder with the ability to remove their share of equipment at any time.
Although this is a good point, many people will ignore your advice. There are many people who are interested in mining but do not have the technical expertise nor the time to invest in a miner. As a result they doing it the "easy" way and will purchase a cloud mining contract

Bitcoin Checker

You can have the current bitcoin price sitting in your notification area

I have used Bitcoin Checker on android and it works very well. On iOS I have used Space Cash: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/space-cash-bitcoin-altcoin/id789603623?mt=8 this is pretty good however for some altcoins it automatically rounds single Litoshi's to .000000010 which is annoying for looking at currencies that trade in single digit litoshis - yeah I know some of the altcoins I acquired really suck... Atleast they are not trading for single xpm parts.
The OP is looking for an android application.

I personally use zero block which, I believe is made by the same people behind blockchain.info. It has live pricing for several exchanges in several currencies as well as both charging and news
38  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: crazy idea: use bitcoin to fund construction of a solar/wind/etc power plant on: October 09, 2014, 11:50:39 PM
This would not work in the way you intended. You appear to be trying to be figuring out a way to get "free" or reduced cost electricity. Any kind of setup that allows you to sell excess electricity back to the grid will not achieve this goal. Your cost of electricity that is used by your miners will be the amount you could get for the electricity by selling it back to the grid. The net effect would actually probably be that you have higher electric costs as you will have to pay for the solar panals
39  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The problem with bitcoin is buying bitcoin on: October 09, 2014, 11:43:20 PM
Buying Bitcoin should be as easy as buying any currency. I should be able to go the post office and buy it over the counter or order it from a travel agent.
Places like localbitcoins make you feel like you are buying a bitcoin (who buys currency, ever)? Sure you exchange it but buy..

We need employers to start paying in bitcoin.

Sorry if this post makes little sense.
Bicoin is actually one of the easier currency like assets that you can purchase. When you try to buy most other currencies you are very limited as to where you can purchase them (generally either an airport or a bank and will end up paying huge markups when doing so.

with bitcoin on the other hand there are many more places that you can buy it (via LBC for example) and the markup is generally lower.

Also most travel agencies and all post offices do not sell any currencies Huh
