21  Economy / Services / Re: 8KW Free power. Hosting service. on: August 24, 2015, 03:08:46 PM
You can send me just about any hardware, and I will set it up and run 24/7.
Can I assume that includes any potential maintenance issues that may arise?

Also, based on my miner efficiency, that'd come out to roughly $0.1588/kwh, which is kinda pricey. Would you settle for a flat fee instead?

this hero member is offering a hosting service, provided that any hardware you send is large enough Smiley

Thanks for the suggestion! Based on my miner efficiency, that'd come out to $0.158/kwh though, which is kinda pricey, wouldn't you say?

What about you personally, if I may ask - do you mine, and if so, do you use a host? If not, do you just have a couple miners, or did you have some really beefy electrical set up at your home?
23  Economy / Service Discussion / Trustworthy miner colocations/hosts? on: August 23, 2015, 07:29:49 PM
I'm looking for a place to host a few scrypt miners, so I'm curious what miner hosts you folks use? (assuming you use one at all, of course)

I'm going to be moving abroad where the electricity costs exceed profitability, and if I were to leave the machines with friends or family, I'm not confident that they could resolve any maintenance issues that may come up, assuming they'd even be okay with all the noise.

Obviously, trust is of the utmost importance, so I'm hoping to find providers who have an established reputation around here.

Any constructive feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Beware: They got huge problems with their operations, long downtime, heat problems, router and network issues and not to mention bad customer support. Not to be recommended for the time being. Will update if this changes.
Any updates on this? I'm quite curious!

Personally, before going to the doctor, I'd take a look at what I was eating, like Hot Carl suggested. (Who refers to themselves at Hot Carl anyway?)

Specifically, you want to make sure your body is getting enough nutrients. Are you eating fruits and vegetables?

Are you eating lots of processed foods? As a rule of thumb, the fewer ingredients you see on the packaging, the better, and if there is a bunch of stuff that you can't even pronounce, you probably want to take a pass.

You might also consider downloading an app like MyFitnessPal to track your daily consumption. It might be that you're eating too few calories.

Also, you might check out the movie Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead (about a juicing diet). The maker also made a followup movie to that with some realistic long-terms results and afterthoughts, but I can't think of the name off the top of my head.

You might also want to look into green smoothies.

It may well be that something else besides nutrition is going on, but unless you're having serious symptoms, it's probably best to focus on giving your body the best fuel it can get before going to a doctor. More often than not, they'll just write your a prescription for some drug that a company incentivized them to prescribe.

Good luck with your project!! (You can let me know if you need help crunching some numbers) Smiley Smiley

Thank you! I just sent them an email this morning, so I'll post their reply and my results here once I get more information.

By contrast, I run my computer regardless of the temperature in the house, although I rarely let it get hotter than about 27C before turning on the AC.

The plan for this miner is to actually keep it at a friend's house while I am abroad. I plan to monitor it remotely, and my friend is tech savvy in case hands-on maintenance is needed. He doesn't have a basement though, and I'm concerned that if I run an A2 in his spare bedroom, for example, that the noise will be a nuisance. Whereas if it were in the garage, it would be much more separated from the rest of the living space. I supposed I might be able to install a window-mounted AC unit in his garage, although I'd have to run some numbers in terms of how efficient that'd be.

Regarding increased air flow, correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems as though, even if you have the thing in an air tunnel, if the ambient temperature is 38C, the components won't ever get cooler than 38C.

The manual you linked to does give a max junction temperature of 60C, and says "It is advised that the cooling design should be conservative to maintain surface heat sink temperature less than 48 degree under fan cooling for the best chip performance." It doesn't really give any specifics as to the ambient temperature, but that's pretty close.

It goes on to say "Appropriate dissipation through ground vias should be engineered in order to transfer the heat from the bottom pad to the bottom layer of the PCB board where an aluminum heat sink should be placed, " which sure sounds like they want you to engineer your own heat dissipation, which I thought was odd.

Anyway, I'll drop them an email, and see if they can clarify or give any recommendations.

Thanks, Borisz. I did find those posts, but I took that to mean that it's the temperature that the chip itself runs at if the rig is at normal room temperature.

Grout makes a very interesting point about the correlation between the two temperatures, and I guess I suspected as much. One seller was saying "Well, the operating temperature is 40-50C, and even in the summer, garages won't get that hot, so you should be good". But if Grout is correct, and it would makes sense that he/she is, then the seller either doesn't know what they're talking about or they're just blowing smoke up my ass.

Still though others have rigs in garages, right?

Is there a maximum recommended ambient temperature for a scrypt miner like the A2? I'm having trouble finding this from any official sources, so I welcome any constructive feedback you may have to offer.

Thanks, shavers! I appreciate the good word.

I came across this video in the meantime, which cleared things up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gASgyuXUoF8

At least as far setting minerd (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=55038.0) up to use my CPU instead of something else like cgminer, which I think is for ASIC GPU miners.

Believe it or not, I had already checked out the IRC channel, but there didn't seem to be anyone around. And the 'mining' forum is pretty much empty. It's all good though, I finally have things off the ground.

Out of curiosity, assuming you do your own mining, what kind of equipment do you use, and what do you mine for exactly?
32  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ★ [GMC] GameCredits - MANDATORY UPDATE • A Multi-Platform Gaming Currency [GMC]★ on: July 01, 2015, 09:50:04 PM
Is there a noob guide available for mining GMC? I'm brand new to scrypt mining, and I'd like to dip my toes in first by starting on my PC and then moving to a miner, assuming I get all my ducks in a row. So hopefully you helpful folks can help get me off to the races.

I downloaded GameCredits Core and ran it, but it didn't seem obvious what to do to get started. When it runs, I see 'No block source available' in the bottom left, and on the right, if I hover over the icon I see '0 active connections to the GamerCredits network'.

I also downloaded cgminer, registered for a pool, and was having trouble running the batch file that's supposed to start it on a Windows machine. I knew that it wouldn't quite work since I don't have a dedicated graphics card installed just yet, although I have a couple laying around that are nothing special but would at least function as training wheels. But I don't see the 'cgiminer' file in the folder that I extracted; only cgming-nogpu. Not sure if this is related to the fact that I don't actually have a dedicated GPU installed yet.

Anyway, I would certainly appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction. I'm sure there are detailed instructions around here somewhere...
